Dan is always glad to talk to Nik Greeley, which is why this is Nik's third full length episode. And they always seems to talk at a time when Nik is going through a period of growth and change, whether it be in his personal life, or with his band, The Operators. Dan and Nik talk about coming back after the pandemic, working in the concert industry at Rising Sun Presents, and stepping back from talent buying to fully commit to his music. Nik opens up about always working on his mental health, keeping the bad habits at bay, and how focusing on himself and his band has been a huge help in that, as well as being part of the Johnny Brenda's and The International Bar family on the hospitality side. Nik Greeley and the Operators have a brand new EP out right now called 'Scatterbrain', available wherever you get your digital music. The band will also be playing at Xponential Music Festival on Sept 22nd, as part of WXPN's 3 day concert festival, now in it's 30th year. Photo by Lisa Schaffer

Karl MacDermott was amongst the new breed of stand-up comedians in the Ireland of that era. In 1988 he helped co-found The Comedy Cellar at The International Bar in Dublin with Barry Murphy, Ardal O'Hanlon and Kevin Gildea. After appearing in his own one - man comedy show Memoirs of a Midget at The Peacock Theatre in 1989 and he had successful runs at The Gilded Balloon in The Edinburgh Fringes from 1991-93 with shows like An Afternoon With Klaus Barbie's Pen-pal and Stand-Up Stories. In September 2021, his new humour fiction novel 58% Cabbage, about a sit-down nobody who tries stand-up comedy, was published by Black Spring Press Group.

On today’s episode, I’m chatting to an Irish actor and stand up comedian. Spending his childhood in Monaghan, this week’s guest didn’t grow up looking for a life in the spotlight. Quite shy and introverted, he loved to read and was extremely curious about the world. Going to college, he decided he wanted to change as a person and took up debating where he got his first taste of what stand up comedy could be like. Realising he had the ability to make his peers laugh, about six months after graduating, he set up one of Ireland’s first comedy clubs with three friends in the upstairs room of the International Bar in Dublin. Taking it as far as he could in Ireland, his next move was to London where everything changed. Being approached to audition for a new series, Father Ted, was only the beginning and a few stand up tours, further TV roles such as DI Jack Mooney in Death in Paradise - led him to make quite the name for himself on the world stage. Sharing his story thus far, here’s what it’s like to be Ardal O’Hanlon. Follow Ardal on Twitter @ardalsfolly

In this episode, Dr. 2me and Professor T deviate from the current narrative to give you a blow-by-blow account of their recent gig in The International Bar in Dublin. Go behind the scenes before, during and after this event, which reinvigorated their desire to perform live and put the cool back in cabaret.
When a presenter on Newstalk said that women might bear some of the blame if they get raped, he was suspended and eventually reinstated - but when Dil Wickremasinghe criticised him and the station, she was sacked and her show cancelled. Her emails to RTE suggesting she taker her "Global Village" show - a calm oasis of diversity in a sea of click-bait and bile - went unanswered. Now a trainee psychotherapist, Dil joined me at the International Bar in Dublin for a gripping discussion about her career as a broadcaster, the circumstances surrounding her departure and how diversity in the media is not - and cannot be - treated as a box-ticking exercise.

The 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival is coming to an end this weekend, and so is the first run of the Fringe Interests podcast. We are going out with a bang with a great interview with one of Irelands' best comedians. Ryan Cullen is a specialist in dark one-liners, and we discuss how he writes, as well as the change in direction he is taking with his current show, Daddy Issues, which involves a lot of weird and wonderful stories about Ryans father. We discuss Ryans previous experiences at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, with his shows "Guantanamo Bae" and "Safe Word", and the lengths Ryan goes to make the posters for his show. Ryan also co-hosts the Comedy Cellar in the International Bar in Dublin, and is a star of the new youtube channel, Try, as well as having been one of the stars of the now defunct Facts! channel. The Fringe Interests Podcast will be back later this year with another line-up of fantastic Irish and international comedians talking about comedy and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy this conversation with Ryan Cullen.
