Sir Keir Starmer is facing mounting pressure in Parliament over his handling of Lord Mandelson's resignation as US ambassador. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch has accused Starmer and his chief of staff Morgan McSweeney of having “forced through” Mandelson's appointment, despite warnings, with the party demanding the release of the so-called “Mandelson-Epstein files”.Camilla and Tim ask if the controversy is at risk of overshadowing President Donald Trump's state visit this week. And Tim speaks to Father Ted co-creator Graham Linehan about the gender-critical social media posts that saw him arrested by armed police at Heathrow Airport and what it means for the future of free speech online. The state of free speech in the UK is sparking global debate - especially in the United States. Joe Rogan's guests have raised alarms over arrests for social media posts, and U.S. Vice President JD Vance has warned Britain is “heading down a dark path.” That debate exploded this week after comedy writer Graham Linehan, co-creator of Father Ted, was arrested at Heathrow by armed police over three posts about trans women. The government says police should focus on “streets not tweets,” while the Met insists only lawmakers can change the rules. What's striking is how many of Linehan's critics have defended his right to speak, signalling a possible shift in attitudes on the trans debate. Even Malcolm Gladwell admits he felt pressured into his earlier views. So - are we now at a watershed moment in this generation-defining issue of free speech, identity, and censorship? The Rose of Tralee is one of the biggest events in Ireland's cultural calendar. It pumps millions of euro into the local economy and pulls in well over half a million viewers; no mean feat in an age of dwindling linear TV viewership.Almost 30 years of being lampooned as a ‘Lovely Girls' competition thanks to that Father Ted episode has seen its popularity undimmed.Albeit only relatively recently, it has evolved to permit married and transgender women enter the contest. However 29 is still the cut-off age, meaning you are officially too old for Rose of Tralee at the age of 30.The title is bestowed upon a young woman whom the judges think would be a good ‘cultural ambassador' for Ireland for the following year. While the spirit of diversity has been embraced, with women of colour among those to don the sash, is the competition still overly focused on a narrow version of femininity?Last year, the documentary ‘Housewife of the Year' highlighted the eponymous competition which ran from 1969 to 1995.In what seems utterly baffling now, married women were judged on their ability to “budget effectively and prepare a simple meal.”Eventually the competition was scrapped quietly; collapsing under the weight of public opinion which was rebelling against societal norms of the quiet homemaker. But the Rose of Tralee doesn't appear to be in any such jeopardy, and is arguably as popular as ever.Reporter Niamh Browne joins the podcast from Tralee to ponder the question: Is the Rose of Tralee uncancellable?Presented by Aideen Finnegan. We've had a double header in both divisions since our last show but there's only discussion point on the agenda today; what about those goalscoring Lomboto brothers? They have their own God but our main talking point, naturally enough, is how the League of Ireland will cope without its sometime messiah Damien Duff, who interrupted the regular Sunday service to make a shocking exit to a Simply Red tune. We'll hear bits from his last press conference before pondering the chain of events that few saw coming - not even from the grassy knoll. It's not just a Duff show - contrary to predictions - as there's a bit of Bohs brilliance, and Alan Reynolds talking about a return from the dead over Easter that appears to be attracting a growing number of devotees. Johnny took his microphone to Inchicore to catch the thoughts of an under-pressure Stephen Kenny and also hear a few words from Derry's Tiernan Lynch and Liam Boyce. We also have pizza tales from Ballybofey, Hurley as Moleman, missed messages, the context to crazy scenes in Cork and Moses stepping out of line. Your weekly sermon of football opinions interspersed with Simpsons, Father Ted and Only Fools and Horses references comes to you in association with Rascals Brewing, Sport Cosanta, Future Ticketing & Collar & Cuff, all of whom will be back next week, but Damien won't, or will he?

On today's bonus Destination Special we're heading to Ireland, one of my favourite places in the world. Ireland has this special kind of magic. It asks you to slow down, to dig beneath the surface, to chat to the people behind the bar and to take your time - to walk, to wander, to just sit and soak it all up.Joining me is someone who knows the country inside and out - the brilliant comedian and actor, Ardal O'Hanlon. You'll know Ardal, of course, from TV's Father Ted, where he stole the show as the endlessly lovable Father Dougal - and from the extremely popular BBC series Death in Paradise, where he swapped windswept clifftops for tropical crime-solving in the Caribbean. He's also an incredible writer, stand-up, and most recently, travel presenter, in The Emerald Isles, his BBC series which explored Ireland's lesser-known islands, uncovering their culture, music, and wild beauty. In this episode, Ardal shares the places in Ireland that have stayed with him, from childhood summers in Galway and Donegal to his all time favourite destination, a lunar landscape in County Clare, and my favourite part of the episode, his hidden gems, which really bring to life some of the wild islands off the mainland that he visited while making his TV series - a lot to add to your bucket list. We talk about the joy of slowness, the quirks of island life, and his new tour - Not Himself - which he'll be taking across the UK and Ireland soon.So whether you're planning a trip to Ireland, dreaming about one, or you're just here for the stories - settle in and enjoy!Destination Recap:Crockwell, Galway, Co. The 11 o Clock Show In the twilight years of the 1990s, The 11 O'Clock Show exploded onto Channel 4 as a sharp, satirical late-night comedy that would come to define a cultural shift in British humour. Launched in 1998, the show embraced controversy, irreverence, and chaos—offering a blend of current affairs commentary, anarchic sketches, and daring character work. What began as an experimental format with modest expectations quickly grew into a breeding ground for some of the most iconic comedic voices of the next two decades. This episode explores how The 11 O'Clock Show served as the launchpad for then-unknown talents like Sacha Baron Cohen, Ricky Gervais, and Mackenzie Crook. We revisit Ali G's legendary rise from fringe character to cultural juggernaut, Ricky Gervais' early incarnations of cringe comedy, and Crook's subtle brilliance in darkly offbeat sketches. All three would go on to revolutionise British and global comedy in their own ways, but it was this chaotic Channel 4 late-nighter where the seeds were first sown. Behind the camera, the writing talent was equally impressive, with future stars like Charlie Brooker and John Oliver contributing to the show's jagged, boundary-testing tone. With contributions from Father Ted creators and Borat collaborators, The 11 O'Clock Show was a nexus of comedy evolution, fusing tabloid cynicism with Gen X sarcasm. The episode also unpacks the cultural moment that gave rise to the show: a time when New Labour's gloss was beginning to crack, political correctness was being loudly challenged, and the media was becoming increasingly self-aware. The 11 O'Clock Show didn't always get it right—it could be juvenile, offensive, and uneven—but it helped pave the way for the next era of British satire. More than two decades later, the show's influence can still be felt in the tone, style, and structure of modern comedy. From Ali G's real-world interviews to the cringe-laced realism of The Office, The 11 O'Clock Show helped rewrite the rules of televised humour. This episode takes you back to the messy, brilliant, late-night chaos that changed the face of comedy—whether Channel 4 knew it or not. Since our last show, we've had several open letters, one managerial departure, two injury time goals for the ages and the death of a pontiff. And that's before we even get to Marc Canham. We eventually manage to do that after hearing a little bit of John Caulfield and Damien Duff and more about the Galway United old lads Whatsapp group. There's a bit of Mauro Picotto, the mandatory Father Ted nostalgia, a Jeff Bezos tribute in Drogheda and Louth being very proud. Throw in Johnny's fine dining update and speculation about a managerial party that will never happen and this Future Ticketing, Sport Cosanta, Collar & Cuff and Rascals Brewing sponsored bonanza might just qualify for the good 15pc that makes the other 85pc of life worth it.

This podcast is late, late, late, and we are sorry, sorry, sorry. The blame falls solely on my (Emily's) shoulders. I have had the most insane conflagration of deadlines and events the past two weeks, and that, combined with the normal work of mothering three small children and running a household, pretty much broke me. So, mea culpa, mea cupla, mea maxima culpa. As my penance I will unlock an essay I wrote a couple years back on parish switching and post it below. All that being said, here is the much overdue latest episode, where we discuss the merits of parish shopping—why you might want to do it or not want to do it, when you should do leave when you should stay, and how we have all made those decisions over the years. If you are a canon lawyer, we ask that you kindly skip this episode, because we probably made about a dozen canonical errors regarding the nature of parishes and our obligations, and you will not be able to handle our lack of precisions. But hopefully nobody else is listening to us for canonically precise definitions of parishes.
