Does America Want Chaos?

One thing tomorrow's election will test is Americans' appetite for chaos, particularly the kind that Donald Trump has been exhibiting in the last few months of his campaign. After weeks of running a disciplined campaign, Trump's advisers lost control of their candidate, the Atlantic staff writer Tim Alberta reported this week. Trump grew restless and bored and drifted off script in his campaign appearances. During a summer interview with the National Association of Black Journalists, for example, he mused aloud about Kamala Harris, “I don't know. Is she Indian or is she Black?” From the perspective of his advisers, Trump's string of offensive public statements needlessly alienated potential voters. Members of Trump's campaign staff told Alberta that they became disillusioned about their ability to rein in their candidate and left the campaign. Will this unleashed version of Trump affect the election outcome? In this week's episode of Radio Atlantic, we talk with Alberta and another Atlantic staff writer, Mark Leibovich, about how candidate Trump transformed over the summer, how Kamala Harris's campaign reacted, where each campaign stands now, and what it means for the election. Alberta and Leibovich also offer tips on how to manage your inner chaos while watching the election results. Get more from your favorite Atlantic voices when you subscribe. How to strengthen resilience as a founder?   As I say every episode, entrepreneurship is often described as an emotional rollercoaster, oscillating between the highest highs and lowest lows. Alon Leibovich experienced this firsthand when his company BrandTotal was sued by Facebook, throwing him into a crucible of immense mental stress for nearly two years. Yet he also tasted the sweet victories, like running an Intel Ignite agro/climate tech bootcamp, which helped rebuild the Gaza Envelope community.   An entrepreneur, founder, and builder, Alon is also an organizational psychologist by training, though he never practiced clinically. This background shaped how he navigated the turmoil when he learned via social media that Facebook was suing his company. "It felt like someone had punched you in the stomach," he recounts. His first step was consulting his mentor and lawyer, feeling his world had collapsed.     Following his mentor's advice to take action rather than dwell, Alon assembled a crisis team that worked until 2am in the morning - risk managers, PR personnel, lawyers. "Attention is just like any other muscle," Alon says. You need to train the ability to pay attention and direct your attention to the right place, to navigate between everything, because eventually doing and being in action greatly reduces anxiety. It's better than getting caught up in thoughts in the head, which eventually didn't leave him for almost two years.   A board member's call proved pivotal in shifting Alon's perspective: "I know it's hard for you to see this now, but it's a good thing that's happening." Realizing customers remained loyal, Alon decided to fight back. CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) with biofeedback revealed his stress levels which mirrored "a soldier behind enemy lines under real life or death threatening situation" at risk of heart attack. He was coached to exercise, practice mindfulness, and breathwork to reduce his toxic stress levels.   The dissonance between his inner turmoil and outward composure to employees was grueling for Alon. Yet after two years, they prevailed in the lawsuit, and investors doubled-down on the company. Reflecting on being a founder-CEO, Alon asserts, "As an industry, we don't talk about the fact that it is very hard to be a founder-CEO." We devalue how hard it is these days to do something against all odds and give everything you have, and to believe that you are the one who can do it. But to do that, we have to build, for hours every day, our resilience. And it should be every day, not only when a crisis comes but before - for prevention, and after, and all the time.   Alon candidly shares grappling with imposter syndrome, doubting himself as both a person and manager, although at the end, a pivotal and very important realization was: "There is more to us than just our business."   His key lessons were understanding what you can control versus accepting what you cannot, having a "North Star" vision while remaining humble and coachable, and leaving ego aside to be agile. "Many first-time founders don't listen enough," he cautions. The dissonance between his first and second venture as an entrepreneur yielded profound growth.

2024 is an election year and Donald Trump is running again. This makes journalist and political commentator Mark Leibovich's second nonfiction blockbuster Thank You for Your Servitude: Donald Trump's Washington and the Price of Submission, particularly timely. Mr. Leibovich sketches the political landscape of Washington during the Trump presidency. We all know how Mr. Trump bent the Republican party to his will. Transcript of Interview with Avital Leibovich: Manya Brachear Pashman:   As the pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas terrorists nears its expiration on Thursday, Hamas continues to hold hostage 160 people. 80, including 61 women and children have been released during the pause. In exchange, Israel has freed 180 Palestinian prisoners. Lieutenant Colonel Avital Leibovich, Director of AJC Jerusalem joins us from Israel now for an update. Avital, welcome to People of the Pod and how are you? Avital Leibovich:   Thank you for having me. I am doing well, considering the fact that we are in a war here in Israel. My biggest concern at this time is the well being of my family. My son is in the army, my daughter is on reserve duty. So that's my number one concern. And of course, the well being of Israel, the safety and security of Israel.  Manya Brachear Pashman:   So Avital, what does this pause mean? What is being accomplished during this time? Avital Leibovich:   So the pause is something that Hamas pressured Israel. It pressured Israel because the military pressure was quite significant. The pause allows a few things to happen. Number one, we, Israel will receive hostages, and in return, Israel will free from prison, women and youth that were involved in different planning of terror attacks or executed themselves terror attacks. And that's one thing. The second thing I would say, is time for Hamas to regroup. That's for their benefit. This pause allows them to regroup, rearm, reposition themselves. The third thing and I'm going back to Israel also allows Israeli army to better prepare to rearm to place itself in the right positioning and then be ready for the next stage, which is resumption of the fighting. Manya Brachear Pashman:   And do you expect that fighting to resume right away? Or do you think that Israel would like to extend the pause as long as possible in order to get as many hostages back as possible?  Avital Leibovich:   Yesterday, there were meetings between, actually was a very interesting meeting in Qatar. In the meeting, we had the head of the Egyptian intelligence, the head of the Israeli Mossad, and the Qatari representative, and the American head of the CIA, the American CIA. And in this meeting, the discussion evolved on a few more days of pause, and in return, Hamas will release a few more hostages.  So right now Israel has said that it agrees to a few more days of a pause. But we're only talking about a few more days. The ultimate goal of this war is to eliminate Hamas government in Gaza. And in order to change that government, in order to bring some sort of a new future to this region, to Israel, to Gaza, to the Palestinians living in Gaza, this takes time.  So the fighting I assume will take a long time. It's going to be a long time because Gaza has been built underground and above the ground in such a way that requires inch by inch, very careful work a lot of the time other facilities are booby trapped. There is a huge array of tunnels underground, which are very long. With junctions. Some of the tunnels can even have cars inside. So this has to be a very, very careful job. We have a lot of soldiers inside Gaza right now. And so this pause I would say is temporary. Manya Brachear Pashman:   What are we learning from the hostages who are being released? Avital Leibovich:   That's the most heartbreaking issue. We're learning a few things. The first thing is they had to speak very, very quietly among themselves. Of course, I'm referring to those who had other hostages with them. But those who had other hostages with them had to whisper. And how do we know this because some of the kids are still whispering today, some of the kids that have been held as hostages and just returned from captivity, they're still whispering. Another thing we know is that they had very little food, very little quantities of food, which also brings a lot of worries here in Israel, because there are many elderly people held. There's still a baby inside the toddlers and a few other children. And so the nutrition issue obviously is quite critical.  The third thing we learned is that some of them were held in complete seclusion. One of the children that returned two days ago is a 12 year old boy, by the name of Eitan Yahalomi. His father was murdered, his mother is still alive. And he actually was in a room by himself for at least two weeks. And imagine for a 12 year old to be in this kind of hostile environment, on his own without anybody to communicate, underground, most of the time, that's quite scary.  We also know that they had very poor hygiene conditions, no running water, very, very minimal toilet facilities. We also know they never received any medical care and attention, no medicine, no doctors, nothing of that sort. And the last thing we know is that most of the time they were held underground, in an underground facility, different sizes of rooms. And all of these things are just a small indication of the cruelty of this terror organization called Hamas. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Congress is debating whether to send aid to Israel to support Israel in the war. How important is it at this point? Avital Leibovich:   I think it's very important. First of all, I do want to say that the support that Israel received from the US until now, it's unbelievable. The fact that there are, on the military side the fact that there are our aircraft carriers here in the region, and planes filled with different kinds of ammunition. That sends a very strong message of both deterrence and strength to the enemies in the region. And second, on the political, more strategic level. The voting, the vetoing of the different proposals on the Security Council in the UN, the multiple visits starting from President Biden to Secretary of State Blinken, which he's supposed to arrive here tomorrow. And also appointing a special envoy to this specific situation that we have here in the region.  So all of these things speak volumes. So yes, I think it's very significant to Israel, and also the future decisions will be significant. Look, being at war for such a long time and 53 days have passed already has serious precautions on different issues. Economy is one of them. Obviously, tourism has stopped, small businesses have been affected and many other sectors as well. So aid would be very, very significant to Israel. Manya Brachear Pashman:   I'm also curious about the security situation in the West Bank. We were so focused on terrorism coming from the West Bank before this happened. What is the situation there now, especially as hostages are being released? Avital Leibovich:   It's a good question, because from where I'm sitting, the West Bank at this point of time is another front that Israel has to deal with at this specific moment. We have a serious challenge with the fact that the Palestinian Authority does not really have governance in many areas in the West Bank. And as a result of that, there are different kinds of terror groups, Hamas is one of them. But it's not the only one, trying to recruit Palestinians to commit different terror attacks. The second side of it is a lot of incitement, which is really flooding the social media platforms, and also has an effect on the mood on the streets on the mood of young people and others as well. So the IDF, the Israeli Defense Forces, actually almost on a daily basis, needs to enter certain areas where there is no prisons, unfortunately, have any Palestinian policemen, and actually arrest those terrorists on the ground. And I think in the last 50 days or so the IDF has arrested more than 1000 people that have been suspicious and with some kind of planning or plotting terror attacks against Israelis. And this does not seem to quiet down I have to say so I am concerned of this front.  At this point of time Hamas is though, by the way, investing a lot of time and effort because Hamas is interest is of course, to create lack of stability here in Israel. So part of that is the instability is trying to influence what's going on in the West Bank and trying to get people out to the streets, either protesting against idea for committing some sort of terror acts against Israelis so that's really an issue of concern for us. Manya Brachear Pashman:   We talked about the importance of American aid, are there other countries that are showing significant support that have been really vital in this war? Avital Leibovich:   I think that we've seen some very important gestures of support by European leaders from the Czech Republic, from Bulgaria, from, from the UK, from France, from Japan, from other countries. But I think the number one country in Europe that really stood up and is still standing up supporting Israel very, very strongly, is maybe Germany. And yesterday, the President of Germany visited Israel and visited one of the kibbutzes, a kibbutz called Be'eri. And a lot of the houses there were burned and dozens of people were murdered and others were kidnapped. And he was so touched and moved. And he said that the government of Germany intends to donate 7 million euros just for the rebuilding and renovating of this community.  But there are other countries as well, and I think Israel has been well supported by the international community. However, the challenge still lays ahead, because we are not at the end of this war. And in order to eliminate Hamas, we need more time. And as this time progresses, there will be a lot more pictures which are not pleasant because pictures from wars are not pleasant pictures. And this may have an impact on different kinds of world leaders. So we have to continue and explain and gain that legitimization so that Israel could complete its goal and continue to defend itself. Manya Brachear Pashman:   I know in conversations with AJC's, Berlin's director Remko Leemhuis, he brought delegations of German officials to Israel. And that has made quite a difference, I think, to see it firsthand. Have there been other delegations from other countries? Avital Leibovich:   So we have hosted here in Israel four delegations with very short notice. I have a great staff in the office, and they were able to create an itinerary, which I think is very experiential on one hand, but on the other hand, is also quite touching. Because how many people in such leadership positions really have the opportunity to really be on the ground and see the situation as it is. So we had here three parliamentary delegations from European countries, East and Western Europe. And we also had here the head of the, the chair of the Foreign Affairs security committee of the German parliament. And I met those three parliamentary delegations, and I briefed them.  And I have to say that with all the information that is out there today in 2023, via the internet and platforms and social media, still there is not a full understanding of the situation. So taking these participants on the ground, showing them those areas, those communities that have been affected, and taking them to a base that has been turned into a morgue. Where, even today, more than 80 bodies and body parts still remain unidentified because of the terrible condition that they came with. And I explained to them the extent of the atrocities. You can only really get it when you're on the ground.  Manya Brachear Pashman:   Avital, once this pause expires, and I know it's unclear when that will be, but you've made it clear that it's inevitable – what comes next? Avital Leibovich:   I think we are heading into a very difficult time ahead. Because once we finish the hostage exchange kind of agreements, then Israel will have to return to the actual fighting part. And Hamas, which is a very bitter psychological warfare enemy will continue and try to stop this fighting in different psychological ways. Israeli leadership will have to make here tough decisions, whether the country agrees, for example, just I'll give you just one idea of such a dilemma.  Let's say Hamas tomorrow morning, or in three days time says, complete and finish the fighting altogether. Stop for the next five years, hold your fire for the next five fears, and in return, we will return all the hostages. Then what, then what do you do as a country? What kind of decision will the government take? Will it still continue with the fighting to eliminate Hamas? Or will it say okay, the life of the hostages are more important and therefore, we are canceling the original goal and stopping the fighting. I don't think that will happen.  But those kinds of dilemmas, I think will escort Israeli leaders in the next couple of days. I think they will be tough, very tough questions ahead that Israel will need to deal with. Another issue that we haven't discussed, is the northern arena. Hamas is a tough enemy. is a cruel enemy. It possesses something like 20,000 rockets, which they used more or less half, maybe a bit more. Because Hezbollah is a totally different ballgame in terms of capabilities in terms of military capabilities in terms of ammunition, precise ammunition and so on. And what will be the policy visa vie Hezbollah. And this is also a question Israel will need to ask itself and I'm sure that the next week or two will have an indication where this country is heading. There's one thing that it's clear to all of us here in Israel, that we cannot go back to the same situation that existed here on October 6–53 days ago. That situation must be changed. Manya Brachear Pashman:   Avital thank you so much for joining us and giving us an update.  Avital Leibovich:   Thank you for the opportunity.

On this episode of Cut to the Chase: we give some of the exciting updates in the world of science. As we approach the Fall of 2023, this year continues to demonstrate that perhaps the scientists still don't know everything there is to know about our planet. Amongst the exciting updates, Dr. Adam Leibovich, our regular contributor on all things physics, has been named Dean of the Arts and Science at University of Pittsburgh.   So major congratulations are in order for that achievement.  Dr. Leibovich goes through three topics in this update. First, we go through the recent experiment with the muon, a subatomic particle, and what that means for the Standard Model. The experiment was run and confirmed the existence of other types of matter and energy that exist in the universe that scientists have not accounted for. So now the search for what these particles, matter, and energy are will keep physicists busy and excited for the future. Second, the James Webb Space Telescope has passed its one year anniversary. Dr. Leibovich goes through a few of the exciting things that the telescope has observed, including the most detailed infrared image of the universe ever created. And third, the ongoing dream of trying to make nuclear fusion a reality reached a recent milestone at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory which used 192 lasers to ignite a fusion reaction that produced more energy than was used to trigger it.   Although the old saying that we are “30 years away” from making nuclear fusion commercially viable might still be the case, the milestone was significant as it replicated the achievement of creating more energy than was used to create the reaction. As Dr. Leibovich notes, in the world of science, replication of the experiment is always significant. Now, the world just needs a significant amount of funding and effort to help make nuclear fusion commercially viable. Scaled up nuclear fusion could be a solution towards getting the world off fossil fuels without having to mine the planet for materials to making EVS, solar and wind powered apparatus. Joining me is Lieutenant Colonel Avital Leibovich, Director of AJC Jerusalem. Avital, welcome, and I hope you are safe. But how are you doing? Tell me. Avital Leibovich:   Thank you. It's an opportunity for me to be here with you today and to share from the ground our experiences here in Israel. This is already the third day of the operation. There's tension in the air, but I think that our resilience as Israelis is quite strong. And I'm sure we will overcome this situation as we have in the past. Manya Brachear Pashman: So what is going on there–who is firing the rockets that are now falling on Israel? Avital Leibovich:    So the operation is directed towards the Islamic Jihad in Gaza. Islamic Jihad in Gaza is the smaller of two terror groups in Gaza. It's backed and funded and directed by Iran. And its charter is pretty clear, I would say. Basically, the organization believes that Israel has no right to exist. And in order to make sure that we will not exist, Iran is funding its military capabilities. They have managed to build an arsenal of rockets, of mortars, of drones. They have managed to train soldiers, militants in order to conduct anti-Israeli operations.  And Israel decided to initiate an operation, following two events. The first event was a week ago, where over 100 rockets were fired by this organization, the Islamic Jihad, within 24 hours, towards Israel. And the second event actually took place on Pesach, on Passover, in which 34 rockets were fired from Lebanon within 10 minutes by factions of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Lebanon. So this was an opportunity to make sure that Israel is preventing further escalation and basically defending its people. Manya Brachear Pashman: So where's Hamas in all of this? Avital Leibovich:    So Hamas has in the past, decided to actually sit quietly and not intervene. And this is common. We've seen this in the operation last year, we've seen this in the operation two years ago. And you may want to ask what the reason for Hamas sitting back and the reason is that Hamas has a lot to lose. Currently, Israel declared that it's only looking to target Islamic Jihad targets, namely not Hamas targets. And Hamas understands that if it will join the celebration of Islamic Jihad, then the price Hamas will pay will be very, very high, for one.  There are 18,000 Palestinian workers entering Israel from Gaza on a daily basis. These kinds of workers bringing salaries back home, actually move some sort of an economic cycle inside the Gaza Strip, and the shopping power is stronger and stronger by these workers. If Hamas will join the operation, then obviously, Israel will close the border and will not allow these workers to enter. And additionally, I'll remind our listeners that Hamas is still renovating Gaza from previous operations. So it would be quite serious from their perspective, to stop the renovation and then create further damage. Because as you know, Hamas and Islamic Jihads' arsenal of weapons are very much inside densely populated areas. Manya Brachear Pashman: So what are we seeing in terms of – is the Iron Dome doing its job of protecting Israelis? Avital Leibovich:    So I would say thank God for the Iron Dome, I would say thank God for the very strong and strategic partnership Israel has with the US, which is very highly valued here. The Iron Dome is basically saving their lives with a whopping success rate of 90%, the Israeli people know that there's something in the sky that will be able to protect them. There are thousands of people that have spent the last three days in shelters, their spirit is quite broken. Because sitting in a shelter, whether you're a four year old child or a 30 year old mum, and hearing constantly sounds of explosions and jets flying in the air, this is not a normal kind of atmosphere.  Manya Brachear Pashman: By the time this airs, perhaps a ceasefire will be reached, wouldn't that be a blessing? Are you optimistic that that will happen? Avital Leibovich:   You know, living in the Middle East, you have to be optimistic in routine times, in emergency times. Talks of a ceasefire began yesterday. But we have to keep in mind that there is a lot of fake news, a lot of false publications. And I don't see an end to the current situation, the next couple of hours, maybe in another 24 to 48 hours. And I'm just getting a report that there was a direct hit of a building in Rehovot, which is a city maybe half an hour from here, half an hour from Tel Aviv. So we're not there quite yet. I do want to mention, in this context, Egypt's role. Media has put a focus on Saudi Arabia's role in the region. But we must not forget that Egypt is a strong partner. And this is the partner who actually mediates between Israel and the different terror groups in Gaza. They have an important role. Israel respects this role. And we should not forget this very, very significant actor in our region. Manya Brachear Pashman: Well Avital, thank you for that addendum and thank you for joining us. I really hope that you're able to stay safe and that we are talking about a ceasefire very soon. Avital Leibovich:   Thank you for the opportunity.

Betsey makes two announcements regarding 1) her complete retirement and 2) a newly calendared trip to Israel, which requires her to secure a U.S Passport. Politics and family gatherings don't always mix - but Betsey's new extended family has opened new doors of understanding and perspective. A great horned owl brings them all together. Ken shares his three visits to Israel. The MidTerms are just two weeks away. Raphael Wornack debates Herschel Walker. John Fetterman appears in a face-off with Dr. Mehmet Oz. Many states are in play, with control of both the Senate and House, including California. Ezra Klein interviews author Mark Leibovich regarding his recent book, Thank You for Your Servitude. His thesis: to understand today's G.O.P., we must understand what Leibovich calls, the Trump enablers. Paul Ryan, Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham, Kevin McCarthy, J.D. Vance, and many more have, by their silence, turned the Republican Party into the Party of Trump. Ken identifies government by the consent of the governed, free and fair elections, and the peaceful transfer all at risk in this election cycle. Lawsuits and armed guards have targeted Maricopa County in Arizona during this election. “What would you do for your relevance?” the political journalist Mark Leibovich asks in his new book, “Thank You for Your Servitude: Donald Trump's Washington and the Price of Submission.” “How badly did you want into the clubhouse, no matter how wretched it became inside?” For Leibovich, you can't truly understand the current Republican Party without taking stock of the almost Shakespearean drama that unfolded during the Trump presidency — in which Republican after Republican bowed to the will of their ascendant party leader.Through his extensive — and often quite colorful — reporting with Trump's inner circle of enablers, Leibovich tries to understand the motivations that fueled Trump's takeover of the G.O.P. But this conversation isn't only important in retrospect. With the Republican Party poised to possibly recapture at least one house of Congress in November, many of Trump's core enablers could soon hold considerable political power. Who are they? What do they believe? How will they act if given power? We discuss why the stakes in 2022 midterms feel higher than ever, why the Republican Party has changed so profoundly since the days of Paul Ryan and Eric Cantor, how the governing structure of the G.O.P. fell apart as Trump rose in influence, the many reasons politicians from Lindsey Graham to Elise Stefanik converted from Trump skeptics to staunch Trump defenders, the political motivations of Kevin McCarthy — who may become the next speaker of the House — and how he might wield power, how the persistence of Trumpism could profoundly alter American democracy, why Leibovich believes figures like J.D. Vance prostrated themselves to a man who insulted them, what options Democrats have for countering election denialism and more.Mentioned:“Donald Trump Is Not Going Anywhere” by Mark LeibovichBook recommendations:Why We Did It by Tim MillerConfidence Man by Maggie HabermanNSFW by Isabel KaplanThoughts? He was the Chief National Correspondent for the New York Times for 10 years, before moving to The Atlantic  this past spring. He's the author of four books, including the number one NY Times bestseller, This Town, in which he chronicles the incestuous relationship between Washington media and the political class. His latest book was number one on the bestseller list just two weeks after it was published in July. It examines the unprecedented and often inexplicable spell cast on the Republican party by Donald Trump, whose demands for fealty and obsequiousness know no bounds. As Leibovich deftly observes, official Washington not only curried favor with Mr. Trump, it groveled with a degree of servility unmatched in American political history. Leibovich offers an insightful glimpse into a world where Trump's supporters remain enthralled, despite the revelations of the January 6th Committee, or the ignominy that Trump continues to heap upon himself as he repeats, over and over, a medley of malicious lies about the election he lost. The book is called Thank You for Your Servitude:  Donald Trump's Washington and the Price of Submission.  Mark Leibovich joined us in July on Zoom from Washington, DC…See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Republican Party used to stand for individualism, and according to journalist and author Mark Leibovich, it now largely answers to the whims of one man: former president Donald Trump. Tracing Trump's ascent to the top of a party that in the early months of his candidacy viewed him with contempt, Leibovich brings answers to the massive question of “what happened?” Mark Leibovich is an award-winning journalist and writer for The Atlantic. Called the “reigning master of the political profile” by Washingtonian magazine and named one of “Washington's 25 Most Powerful, Least Famous People” by The New Republic, Leibovich has decades of journalistic experience, including previously writing for The New York Times for 15 years.  In his latest book Thank You For Your Servitude, Leibovich retells how figures like Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham went from vocal Trump critics to loyal soldiers. With shocking honesty from some of Trump's biggest supporters admitting they are “in on the joke,” Leibovich uses interviews, news media and an incisive, brutally honest investigation to tell how Trump remade the GOP in his own image—and how far his politicians are willing to go to stay relevant. Join us, as Leibovich recounts the transformation of the American political right, and how it gave hints of the events we see unfold today. "The point with Trump is he's in on the joke." So said South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham about his odd relationship with the 45th President as quoted by veteran journalist Mark Leibovich in his new book Thank You For Your Servitude: Donald Trump's Washington and the price of admission. The idea that Trump's entire chaotic rollercoaster presidency was a giant joke and his army of Republican enablers were in on it all along is a continuing theme of Leibovich's book, as he charted how one after another top Republicans who privately had utter contempt for the occupant of the Oval Office, never the less fell loyally in line. Concluding, that it was all just some harmless charade that Trump himself was fully a part of. But what happens when the joke, including absurd claims about the results of a Presidential election leads to violence. Threatening the lives of even Trump's own Vice President. As the January 6th Committee plans to wrap up its summer hearings with a primetime special on Thursday night, we'll talk to Leibovich about his book and what happens when the big Washington joke stopped being funny. What would these politicos do to preserve their place in the sun, or at least the orbit of the spray tan? What would they do to preserve their “relevance”? Almost anything, it turns out. Trump's savage bullying of everyone in his circle, along with his singular command of his political base, created a dangerous culture of submission in the Republican Party. Meanwhile, many of the most alpha of the lapdogs happily conceded to Mark Leibovich that they were “in on the joke.” As Lindsey Graham told the author, his supporters in South Carolina generally don't read The New York Times, and they won't read this book, either. All that cynicism, shading into nihilism, led to a country truly unhinged from reality, and to the events of January 6, 2021. It's a vista that makes the Washington of This Town seem like a comedy of manners in comparison.  Mark is a recipient of the National Magazine Award for profile writing. The journalist Mark Leibovich began the piece this way: "Let me put this bluntly: Joe Biden should not run for reelection in 2024. He is too old." Leibovich said he has recently spoken with 10 "official and unofficial advisers to the administration." They've spent time around the president and say he is holding up well despite all the bad things that are happening in the country and the world. But then Leibovich added: "Here's another recurring theme I keep hearing, notably from people predisposed to liking the president. 'He just seems old.'"

Gabby Leibovich did just that – and in the process, with his brother Hezi, became one of Australia's best online retailers. Gabby and Hezi separately started selling products on eBay in the early 2000s, before joining forces to create Catch Of The Day – fifteen years later, and the eCommerce giant has become a multi-billion dollar business. Innovation in health care is being driven by technology and data. At Mayo Clinic, the Center for Digital Health is the hub for this digital transformation. "The Center for Digital Health has the vision of bringing Mayo Clinic to a global community so that we can deliver Mayo Clinic anywhere in a manner that is simple," says Dr. Bradley Leibovich, medical director for Mayo Clinic's Center for Digital Health.Current projects at the Center for Digital Health include developing a digital front door and improved consumer experience for patients, expanding virtual care, and transforming health care delivery through data and analytics. One example is Mayo Clinic's advanced care at homeprogram, which provides comprehensive care to patients in the comfort of their own homes. Partnering with Medically Home, technology-enabled services company, some patients with conditions previously managed in a hospital now have the option to transition to a home setting for care and recovery services. "This enables people who traditionally would need to be in the hospital for a serious condition to stay in their home, having nurses and physicians checking on them via technology, and having data streamed to those providers from their home," explains Dr. Leibovich. "It allows people to stay in their homes more, with their families more. It will enable them to continue working more. It will cure them faster. It will do so with less expense, less frustration. And everybody benefits if we can accomplish that."On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Leibovich discusses work that is underway at Mayo Clinic's Center for Digital Health to improve the patient's health care experience.

Gabby Leibovich came to Australia as an immigrant child and worked hard. He worked hard at school, he and his brother worked hard at the markets to make some money and he worked hard to build one of Australia's best known and loved online retail brands; Catch of The Day. Gabby is a great Australian success story and a font of wisdom and knowledge about retail sales, online sales, marketing, brand building, team building, money making, investing and, also importantly, knowing ones business limitations. Gabby also invested hard in adjacent supplier relationships and the logistics side that supported his (and his brothers) business. What is revealing is the important focus on input costs as much as retail prices. Gabby is a straight-shooter, but incredibly warm and generous with his time, insights and views. For Episode 50 of Disciplinn, this is a real highlight. Enjoy our discussion.

How do two Israeli brothers with no money, basic tech skills and patchy English build some of Australia's most successful online businesses, with a combined exit valued of more than $1 billion?  You may not know their faces but you'll certainly know the brands they build – Catch.com.au, Menulog, Scoopon and Luxury Escapes. What's more, they did it on a budget and spent virtually zero on marketing.   How did they do it? With great copywriting, an entrepreneurial mindset and a passion to create a successful business. In this episode, the co-founder Gabby Leibovich reveals: How he built multiple businesses without spending any money on advertising  What he looks for when hiring copywriters How to turn humiliation and failure into the fuel for success The secrets to innovation when you're up against competitors bigger than you The power of PR and how to get it, even when you're just starting out How you can make your own luck when everything is going wrong The power of networking (even if you're an introvert and hate going out) Fun fact:  You never know where copywriting will take you.  After interviewing Gabby for my first book, Secrets of Online Entrepreneurs, he contacted me four years later to ask if I would ghost-write his business book. When Gabby Leibovich migrated to Melbourne from strife-torn Israel in the mid-1980s as a teenager, he had no idea what he wanted to do, besides being obsessed with soccer, having fun and trying to master English. After university he worked in his father's electronics store and the sales bug bit him. Last Episode Gabby explained how he graduated from working the bricks and mortar shop floor to eventually expanding into selling online, and building with his brother their first e-commerce empire in Catch of the Day. In Part 2 of my chat with Gabby Leibovich, he tells how they pivoted into online food ordering, creating a business that eventually became Menulog and made them another fortune.  He also gives inside tips for budding startup entrepreneurs on the importance of “frenemies” in business, and how being a risk-taker can lead to massive fails as well as successes.  Plus he's candid about the one great investment opportunity that got away, and why he's lived to regret it! When Melbourne-based Gabby Leibovich, and his brother Hezi stumbled across the internet, they were already experienced salesmen, Gabby had worked for years on the floor of his father's single electronics shop In the Melbourne suburb of Brighton, interacting with customers and selling product. The brothers had also branched out and sold products at suburban market stalls around Melbourne. Then they jumped to a store on eBay, and the internet‘s vast possibilities hooked them. In Part 1 of my interview with Gabby Leibovich, he explains how that 1st foray into online selling morphed into the brothers' own e-commerce website that started as deals.com and progressed to the wildly successful Catch of the Day. They built that business up from scratch & ending up selling their Catch Group to giant Wesfarmers in 2019 for $230million. But wait, there's more! Gabby & Hezi along the way also started Scoopon, and food ordering site called Eat Now, which merged with Menulog, and sold for almost $900million. This is their startup journey. In this episode, we speak with Gal Leibovich, Co-Founder and COO of visit.org, an employee-driven corporate social responsibility platform. Visit.org’s mission is to help companies do good through their platform. Employees can “shop” the platform and choose a cause they’d like to help by volunteering, or contributing money to (directly or by taking part in an activity where the profits are donated). Gal’s background is corporate. He joined visit.org because he wanted to make an impact. He wasn’t aware it was possible to be in the tech scene and combine it with contributing to society. Once he found out that’s possible he looked for a startup where he could do that. “For me having a job where you get paid but you’re also doing a lot of good and you change the face of doing good and the community around you is amazing and something you can’t say no to”. We discuss: – The movement towards doing good amongst companies and millennials – What it’s like to work in a scaling, driven mission startup – The importance of messaging in the non-profit landscape – Gal’s personal motivations and drives – And much more This episode made us self-reflect on how we can do more things that are bigger than ourselves and contribute to society. We hope it’ll move you to action as well. Enjoy your listen!

Mark Leibovich is the chief national correspondent for The New York Times Magazine. Based in Washington, he specializes in national politics, media and profiles of figures in public life. He is the recipient of the of the National Magazine Award for profile writing, and the author of This Town and Citizens of the Green Room. Big Game: The NFL in Dangerous Times (Penguin Press) is a merciless probing of America's biggest cultural force, pro football. Like millions of Americans, Mark Leibovich has spent more of his life than he'd care to admit tuned into pro football. Leibovich kept his obsession relatively private. Still, every now and then Leibovich would reach out to Tom Brady to gauge his willingness to subject himself to a profile in the New York Times Magazine. To his surprise, Brady returned the call. So began a four-year odyssey that has taken Mark Leibovich deeper inside the NFL than anyone has gone before. Ultimately, this is a chronicle of what may come to be seen as "peak football," but also the moment when it all began to turn. Big Gameis a journey through an epic storm. Pro football, this hilarious and enthralling book proves, may not be the sport America needs, but it is most definitely the sport we deserve.
