Splash Stories welcomes Chris Connelly talking from his home in Chicago for a memorable musical memoir amongst the streets the guts and the character of Edinburgh. His latest 8 track album 'The Lives and Loves of the Serial Homesick, Vol. 1' is a paean to his city- and a beautiful and profound one at that - capturing the essence of his love for it through his music his art and his heartfelt lyricism.. Each album comes with its own drawing created by Connelly himself. In Connelly's words : " the album is rich with strong feelings of then and now, memories that may or may not be accurate, locations, events, friends and lovers. I want the listener to walk with me quietly through endless days and nights, through the streets of Edinburgh in the early 1980s, over the tenement rooftops, up the hills with cans of Red Stripe and a well stoked hash pipe. Sitting in the Wee Red Bar, Bannermans, The Gilded Balloon, or the Royal Circus. Playing endless nights of music with my beloved Fini Tribe, dancing at the Hoochie Coochie Club. I miss it badly and have never felt at home anywhere except Edinburgh, where my soul continues to walk the New Town streets and climb the hills,"Check it all out and enjoy his reminiscences too in our Splash Stories conversation'Fini Chagall' https://youtu.be/JWBTtdYPDqM'The Lives and Loves of the Serial Homesick, Vol. 1' albumhttps://chrisconnelly.bandcamp.com/album/the-lives-and-loves-of-the-serial-homesick-volume-1Spotify https://open.spotify.com/album/4jknruEhGgIBakqdA381lWApple Music https://music.apple.com/us/album/the-lives-and-loves-of-the-serial-homesick-vol-1/1733352012Amazonhttps://www.amazon.com/music/player/albums/B0CWN3WW9RLATEST RELEASES'The Birthday Poems' album feat. This week's episode is a little different. I take to the streets of Edinburgh during The Fringe to accost tourists and artistes in town for the World's biggest arts festival. Armed with not one, but sometimes two microphones, I go in search of soundbite gold by asking people about their likes and dislikes when it comes to television. Along the way I bump into Comedians, singers, puppeteers and playwrights, who all share their thoughts about both the festival and the idiot box. I accidentally interview Matt Hutchinson (he'll be back), some guys from Boston, a man called Firefly (I have questions) and Aimee Taylor, who educates me about the dangers of Andrew Tate while singing the praises of Sherlock. I then chat Seinfeld with Moe Singleton before attempting to interview a silent Puppet called Bill, who was celebrating his 44th birthday. Later I bump into to the finely named John McEwan-Whyte who reveals an aversion to WWF, Buffy, and the over abundance of Boobs on TV. I was also lucky enough to come across the brilliant Stefania Licari who jumped on the mic to tell us about her experiences working as a doctor in the NHS before embarking on a stand up career, which led to her sold out show at this year's Fringe. Last but in no way least was the wonderful Kristina DeGiovanni, a diagnosed narcoleptic who's play The Temp was thrilling audiences at The Gilded Balloon. We discuss a myriad of topics including the unrealistic language spoken in the TV show Suits, and why the mini-series might be the way forward in a world with a shrinking attention span. Kristina educates me about the clever way in which Gen Z alter common phrases online in order to circumvent censorship, and expresses her anger toward 'Friends', which in her opinion, has made New York a more frustrating place to live.Follow us on Instagram & Twitter (links below):All music written and performed in this podcast by Steve Otis Gunn,Please buy my book 'You Shot My Dog and I Love You' available in all good book shops and online, or by contacting my good self.Podcast Socials:Tik Tok: https://www.tiktok.com/@tvtimespodInsta: https://www.instagram.com/tvtimespodYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@tvtimespodTwitter: https://twitter.com/tvtimespodSteve's Socials:Insta: https://www.instagram.com/steveotisgunnTwitter: https://www.twitter.com/steveotisgunnFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/steveotisgunn.antisocialGuest Socials:https://www.instagram.com/matthutchinsoncomedyhttps://www.instagram.com/moedinerohttps://www.instagram.com/aimeeataylorhttps://www.instagram.com/bills44thhttps://www.instagram.com/licaristefaniahttps://www.instagram.com/thetempplayhttps://www.instagram.com/falafelemonshttps://twitter.com/johnmcewanwhyteProduced by Steve Otis Gunn for Jilted Maggotwww.jiltedmaggot.com Hosted on Acast. An afternoon of live performances took place at the Roxbury Central Festival Fringe venue in Edinburgh this June. The event was created by Australian New Scot Jasmine Lindemann and was inspired by the contribution that the National Collective made to the 2014 independence campaign. ‘Bed The Musical' is centred around the titular piece of furniture. The show examines a twenty-year-long marriage through the presence of the bed that Alice and Ben bought instead of going on a honeymoon. If beds could tell their own stories, this bed has a tale to tell, and it's all put to song. Written by Tim Anfilogoff and Alan Whittaker Bed is a musical about a place we spend a third of our life in, and much more of our life around it, making it, and thinking up new things to do in it., Ahead of the show making its worldwide premiere at this year's Fringe, I spoke to writer Tim Anfilogoff and director Matthew Gould about the devilish divan that can be found at the Gilded Balloon.

Jeremy Nicholas' career includes working as a news and sports reporter from his early days at studio radio, an award-winning breakfast radio show on BBC Greater London, recognition for his live commentary at the horrific Hillsborough Disaster, the Professional Speaking Award of Excellence, and 11 years as the voice of the FIFA computer games. 2018 saw Jeremy bring a show packed full of anecdotes, hilarity, and humility to the Edinburgh Fringe with the keyword packed ‘After Dinner Stories From My Disastrous Broadcasting Career'. It's a mix of a new discipline with a long and varied career. What brought Jeremey to the Fringe? How did he decide on this hour of material? And who will you find in his audience? Let's head back to the Gilded Balloon, back to a dining room converted into a stage fro someone to talk about speaking in dining rooms. Let's go back to 2018 and Jeremy Nicholas.
Carey Marx' Fringe in 2013 is the sort of one-line elevator pitch that Hollywood loves - ‘I had to cancel my show in 2012 because I had a heart attack… let's talk about that in 2013'. Marx was already an accomplished storyteller who had that delightful ability to keep the story on the straight and narrow but twist everything else just a little, under the surface, and capture the audience. Intensive Carey - which is still a fabulous pun nearly ten years later - did just that. The Fringe is also family, and knowing that Carey was absent in 2012 meant that so many people - including myself - were delighted just to have him back. This show, just as many others, started in an incredibly relatable place. So let's go back to 2013, go back to welcome Carey back to the Gilded Balloon, and experience some Intensive Carey.
This week I want to head back to 2015. That year the show was broadcast live on Leith FM community radio, as well as being a podcast, with a number of guest hosts joining me - so you'll hear the voice of WUSB New York's Emma Backfish - as well as our comedy just… Finland's Ismo Leikola. For countless decades, the ‘observational comedy' routine has been a staple of stand ups… yes we have all seen just how many Cafe Nero's there are, and how many stamps you need to get a free coffee, but Ismo brought a new angle on this to the Fringe… doing it in his second language. A laid back Finnish style put me in mind of the razer sharp gentleness of Arnold Brown. Ismo's skills wasn't the choice of well-worn topics, is was putting a twist on the resulting points that lifted this show up. So we return to the Gilded Balloon, we return to the time honoured comedian watching our everyday life, we return to a rather chaotic studio, to Observing the Obvious.

This is one of a special series of short episodes speaking to some of the best comedians appearing at this year's Edinburgh Fringe! These episodes will be released daily during the week of 8 August 2022.Schalk Bezuidenhout was born in Kempton Park or as he calls it - 'The New York of the East Rand'. His family and friends stood back as they watched Schalk evolve from an Afrikaans conservative caterpillar into a beautiful dramaqueen butterfly, complete with a moustache and furry afro. It was obvious to Schalk's parents that he would study drama, and to help numb the pain they sent him away to study at the University of Cape Town. While studying in Cape Town Schalk slowly began to realise that there was so much more to life than boerewors and rugby, and started doing stand-up in April 2011.We had great fun chatting to Schalk and learning how he got into stand-up, including hearing about his... interesting venue for his first paid gig, the differences between South African and UK stand ups, and much more!Links:Buy tickets for Schalk's show, I'll Make Laugh To You (Like You Want Me To), on at Gilded Balloon at the Edinburgh Fringe 2022Follow Schalk on TwitterVisit Schalk's websitePage One - The Writer's Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook.
