She writes on the aesthetics of solidarity and feminist art and environmentalism, and she has curated numerous exhibitions. Her work has been exhibited at the University of California at Santa Cruz, Van Gallery in Los Angeles, and elsewhere. TJ Demos is Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of History of Art and Visual Culture at UC Santa Cruz. He is also the director of the Center for Creative Ecologies at UC Santa Cruz. His most recent book is Beyond the World's End: Arts of Living at the Crossing which was just published by Duke last month. Laurie Palmer is Professor in the Department of Art at UC Santa Cruz. Her sculpture, installation, public art, and writing is often concerned with questions of materiality, collaboration, and social and environmental justice. Geen Belle zonder ‘Belle', ‘Be Our Guest', ‘Something There' en natuurlijk... ‘Beauty and the Beast'. Allemaal dankzij de betreurde Howard Ashman en Alan Menken. Opgenomen in een écht kasteel. Kom! Er! Bij!

Show Notes: Normally this this time of year, Musical Director Trever Veilleux would be preparing the UH Hilo Jazz Orchestra for its annual double-dose of Frank Zappa tribute concerts, however, the pandemic prevented that. Although folks won't be lining up outside of the Performance Center to hear their interpretations, Veilleux appears on this podcast with his thoughts on Zappa and the UHJO. In this episode you'll hear UHJO recordings of “Uncle Remus," Outside Now," and new material from Professor T & The East Side Shredders. Some listeners may object to the explicit lyrics found in these songs. To quote Zappa, "This album contains material which a truly free society would neither fear nor suppress." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bigislandmusicmagazine/message

Our final episode highlights two things: the beauty of weirdos & your human hope. Project organizer, Professor Alexandra Juhasz, penned these fragments, anonymously, at a Fake News Poetry Workshop held at the Toronto home of that workshop’s facilitator, Professor T.L. Cowan. Later, at another workshop held within an NYU Performative Writing class and led by Professor Barbara Browning, these words were transformed into a song—by Barbara—quite unaware of who had written them. Two fragments of poetry formed a crossroads between T.L., Barbara, Alex, and others. And, the gifts of time, thought, place, art, and care—so live in this episode—also allow it to model HardTruth #23 from the online primer on digital media literacy: "galvanize people at the crossroads of cinema and community." These words were originally penned by The United States of Cinema, a collective that organized a National Event Day in April 2017. The movie 1984 was screened across the U.S, as a way to speak against fake news, totalitarian rule, and censorship. At the intersections of moving images, artmaking, and ways of being together, we can and often do manifest power and hope. Poetry, songs, performances, movies, parties, and workshops are places where truth intersects with our knowledge, disdain, and plans for each other and the internet. This podcast has been another crossroads for people, poetry, community, criticism, activism and care. The generous, volunteer contributions of scores of poets, scholars, and activists allowed for the many connections that have been built here in the summer of 2020. The stellar efforts of director and editor, Matthew Hittle, social media specialist, Julia Gill, and copyeditor, Gavin McCormick have provided the steady pulse that underwrote and enabled it all. Professor T.J. Teru finally has his hands on the missing piece to the Ultimate Game, it’s Roger Robot. With the techie And/Or’s assistance, the wily robot is fitted into the machine, enabling Teru to make contact with the ancient, long-extinct, Nullians. But Professor Teru’s questions, and the Nullian’s answers, don’t fit well together.
Professor T. Colin Campbell joins us for an interview on a range of topics relating to nutrition, whole-foods plant-based diet, and academic freedom. The conversation explores the definition of nutrition in the context of his research in China that revealed the relationship between animal protein consumption and chronic diseases as well as the correct way to think about diet. Campbell also reflects on the pushback on his research he experienced from policymakers and industries and asserts the importance of having academic freedom in universities. Professor Campbell is the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus at the College of Human Ecology division of Nutritional Sciences. He is widely recognized as a top researcher in the field of Nutritional Science. Professor Campbell has published over 300 research papers and 3 books, including The China Study, which became one of America's best selling books about nutrition. In 2011, he was featured in the documentary ‘Forks Over Knives’. In his over 45 years at Cornell, he has served as an adviser to the American Institute for Cancer Research and chaired the board for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Since 1978, he has been the member of several United States National Academy of Sciences expert panels on food safety, and holds an honorary professorship at the Chinese Academy of Preventative Medicine. Professor T.J. Teru excavates the Big Ooze, a sunken city, in search of the Nullian’s “Ultimate Game.” Meanwhile in Erishkigal, a paleontologist escorts Inanna to a group of talking stones who make god-awful puns. Back at the Digital Circus, the techie And/Or creates a techno-musical duo he calls “The And/Or Sisters!” (they’re not very good)

We're off this week for the Thanksgiving holiday. We'll be back next week with conversations featuring some of the leading lights in early American history. But we didn't want to leave you holding the short end of the wishbone. So we put together a short history lesson for you about George Washington's Thanksgiving Proclamation of 1789. Be sure to read the full proclamation and Professor T. K. Bryon's Digital Encyclopedia entry on the history behind it. Happy Thanksgiving! About our Host: Jim Ambuske, Ph.D. leads the Center for Digital History at the Washington Library. A historian of the American Revolution, Scotland, and the British Atlantic World, Ambuske graduated from the University of Virginia in 2016. He is a former Farmer Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Humanities at the University of Virginia Law Library. At UVA Law, Ambuske co-directed the 1828 Catalogue Project and the Scottish Court of Session Project. He is currently at work on a book about emigration from Scotland in the era of the American Revolution as well as a chapter on Scottish loyalism during the American Revolution for a volume to be published by the University of Edinburgh Press.
Milligan and Hecubus do a quick introduction as it is well known the audience is awaiting the big show down between Beetlejuice and V'Angelique.Quick maneuvering on BJ's part whisks V'Angelique into the Collinwood drawing room and all Hell proceeds to slowly unfold in a variety of ways, while Barnabas and Maggie consult with each other, observing the alarming results from the other side of the door; young David Collins' horror, and Roger Collins' mere annoyance as he strolls passed them with certain responsibilities on his mind. (Probably not a good scene to listen to on a full-stomach.)After the finishing touches are dealt with to this bargain of handling V'Angelique between Barnabas and our Ghost With The Most, Lily and Elizabeth arrive to pick up their cruise tickets and say their farewells, as well as a few oddities in conversation over nearby noises in the woods.Mrs. Johnson enters for a cameo as Carolyn Stoddard assesses the reason her mother is going on this trip to England.Later on Maggie and Sam, asserting their previous lives in the du Pres family, discuss their concerns and what has taken place in The Great House of Collinwood, as well as wanting to come into further contact with The Ghost of Captain Daniel Gregg. As Willie Loomis and Wadsworth become further reacquainted, we see what they have to catch up on and their welcoming to the beloved presence in the visiting ghost of Sarah Collins.Meanwhile we can enjoy another drive with Carolyn Stoddard and Tony Peterson. As usual their date is interrupted by some small town turbulence. But this time, it leads them into a quiet lay-by to pursue more romantic entanglements. Doctor Hoffman sees this from afar, and settles back into her chair to enjoy a dinner date with Professor T. Eliot Stokes. Much casual discussion in the supernatural is enjoyed, leading from vampires to werewolves, enlivened by their blooming romance. On the RMS Queen Elizabeth, after a length introduction of it by our hosts Milligan and Hecubus, we see how our cousins Elizabeth and Lily enjoy their time on board ship. As they engage in the fun of a ballroom the ghost of Bill Malloy enters the picture.
