To mark season 22 of Other Voices, which begins on RTÉ 2 and RTÉ Player on February 29, one of the hottest bands in the country, Gurriers, who played St James' Church in Dingle for the show in December, and host Maykay join the TPOE podcast. Gurriers started in January 2020 and have released a string of excellent singes since, including latest track 'Des Goblin'. Frontman Dan Hoff talks about how they got started, feeling inspired - for good or bad - by social media, playing SXSW in March, what it's like to be part of the hype cycle, and their plans for the rest of the year. A little bonus in the middle of the show: The photographer Rich Gilligan heads to Other Voices every year. He talks about why it's so special to shoot and some of the memorable acts he's experienced in Dingle over the years. Then Fight Like Apes frontwoman Maykay looks back to the Dublin music scene of the mid-00s and how they fitted in, talking FLApes rise, a little about the fall, and their reunion at the Olympia Theatre in 2023. They're returning for a final show there on April 6, 2024 - tickets are running low, FYI. Maykay also talks her solo plans and what it's like hanging out with fellow Other Voices hosts Huw Stephens and Annie Mac in Dingle. The six-part season 22 of Other Voices will showcase some of the most thrilling Irish and international artists on the music scene; with exclusive intimate performances by Griff, Kae Tempest, The Murder Capital, Villagers, BC Camplight, Catrin Finch & Aoife Ní Bhriain, CMAT, ØXN, Gurriers, Mick Flannery, Julie Byrne, The Joy, KhakiKid, Niamh Bury, Qbanaa and Lucy McWilliams.
With her powerful voice and equally incredible band, Fight Like Aoes, Maykay belted onto the scene in the early noughties and absolutely lit up the Irish music scene. After 3 albums the band went their separate ways but her journey sontinued with the likes of the isonic Le Galaxie and collaborations with the likes of Elaine Mai. As much a force for good in front of the camera as she is behind the mic, she has helmed coverage for Other Voices for 8nyears and has recently travelled to Palestine to help those that need it to find their own powerful voice. With the announcement of another FLA gig next year, she dropped into Recored History to share her story and 3 supreme record picks. Enjoy! If Maykay inspires you to go and buy one of the records she mentions (or just one from your own Recorded History) then we'd love if you supported our partners at TheRecordHub.com. They've given us a 15% discount code to pass on so use TRHPod15 at TheRecordHub.com to avail of that generous offer.

A second episode this week as it's a timely chat with MayKay, the vocalist, singer-songwriter and Other Voices presenter who is returning to her original role as lead vocalist with the band Fight Like Apes. The band split up in 2016 after releasing three albums Fight Like Apes and the Mystery of the Golden Medallion (2008), The Body of Christ and the Legs of Tina Turner (2010) and Fight Like Apes (2015) along with a series of EPs.Flapes as they're affectionally known, were one of the first buzz bands out of Ireland in the online era, bursting onto the scene with ‘Lend Me Your Face' and deflating a scene in which singer-songwriter had a chokehold on things by bringing a sense of pop culture fun with synth-pop and alternative, punk rock energy and catchy hooks.Ahead of the band's big comeback show at 3Olympia Theatre on Friday March 24th, I spoke to May Kay about what it's like to return to the well of the past, which songs hit different, how the London and rehearsal show went, and how she views the band's time in the spotlight now.We also talk about MayKay's trip to Palestine last year, and the plight of the Palestinian people who have lived in an apartheid state for the last 75 years, and why it's so important to hear the Palestinian people's own everyday stories of living under occupation and oppression.ACLAI is an Irish gym founded by Ainle O'Cairealla'in in Palestine.Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC)Fight Like Apes' vinyl albums on Rubyworks / Alcopop Records.Listen to the Nialler9 Podcast on Apple | Android | ACAST | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS Feed* Support Nialler9 on Patreon & join our Discord communityShow notesSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistSubscribe to the podcast and please leave a review on iTunes, tell your friends or commit to supporting us directly. For thousands of young people across Ireland, the impact of the pandemic has been catastrophic. This is especially true for children from disadvantaged communities, who may have grown up with gangland violence on their doorstep, or in a home with addiction, overcrowding or poverty. For many, the usual supports they relied on, like schooling and youth clubs were taken away overnight. In a new documentary series by The Irish Youth Foundation, musician and presenter Mary-Kate Geraghty (MayKay) travels to Limerick, Waterford and Dublin to speak to the young people in these communities, about how their lives were affected during the lockdowns. In today's episode, MayKay shares what she learned from listening to their stories. We're also joined by Suzi Cronin, the Youth Work Team Lead at Southhill Hub in Limerick and by Ellen Burke, a young member of the travelling community who speaks about her experience engaging with youth services in Waterford. This week the National Concert Hall have been running an event called 'Utopia'. Dave chats to singer & former frontwoman of Fight like Apes, MayKay about the 'Murmuration' show which takes place tomorrow night, Sunday 23rd of October!
This week's episode is a long form conversation with journalist and writer Una Mullally about the central ideas behind the Utopia series, concocted with and author, lecturer and a sex workers' rights advocate Conner Habib. Utopia at the National Concert Hall is a series of five speculative and aspirational events happening from today Wednesday October 20th until Sunday October 24th which will feature new forms of gigs and talks with improvised and experimental shows which asks questions of audiences and artists about our future: what do you want? What do we want our future to look like. "If this era has changed us, then everything needs to be different. The only option is to strive for utopia.“ Una and I talked about what we'd like to see for live art and culture when things reopen, the desire to be around chaotic, loud performance, how art and music brings meaning and reflection that we've been missing, and discuss Night Dances, a recent show we both experienced at Dublin Theatre Festival, along with how we, as a society and people, have changed during this pandemic. We also talk the disconnect between people and politics, in light of the Cobblestone, student protests, Merchant's Arch and the numerous hotel developments around our city. Utopia will feature input from David Le'aupepe, Gemma Doherty (Saint Sister), David Kitt, MayKay, Daoirí Farrell, Rory Friers (And So I Watch You From Afar), Izumi Kimura, Ben Castle, Rebel Phoenix, Strange Boy, DJ Replay, Dyramid, Kate Butler, Don Rosco and No Place Like Drone. January is almost dust but there's still time for a music podcast to throw its scalding hot takes around. Dave Hanratty and Craig Fitzpatrick mine Top 5 gold this week as the best one-and-done albums come into focus. Before that, we chat with Elaine Mai and MayKay as they release the stomping pandemic antidote that is 'No Forever' – WARNING: Not strictly an antidote, just a great song that helps you escape for a few minutes at a time. ACT ONE: A couple of announcements including Dave getting an unlikely shock. ACT TWO (7:25): The role of the critic is up for debate yet again, Wayne Coyne makes it to Morning Ireland, Dolly Parton wants to accompany you on a walk and an old favourite returns – it's the week in music news. ACT THREE (26:34): Elaine Mai and MayKay in conversation. ACT FOUR (48:54): We've teased it once or twice but it's finally time to shine a light on the greatest one-and-done albums to ever do it. High emotions, unsolved mysteries and the tension of possible crossover abound on this week's Top 5. With more pep in their step than could reasonably be expected after two days of relentless hijinks, our brave NO ENCORE boys kicked off Sunday’s programme at the Ah Hear stage, right at the heart of Electric Picnic. Dave, Colm and supersub Daithí – with a cameo from the wonderful MayKay – manned the mics for a joyfully raucous episode that was declared best podcast of the weekend by The Irish Times, and that’s the paper of record, don’t ya know… ACT ONE: The weekend’s proceedings are pored over in the company of late arrival MayKay – from the vivacity of Versatile to the B.O.R.E. of N.E.R.D. ACT TWO: Colm arrives from news from afar; an Ed Sheeran alteration, a Michael Jackson impersonation, a Metallica libation, and more for good measure… ACT THREE: The rule is run over the new releases of the week. Fall Out Boy turn the clock back, Muse look to the future, and Soulé reaffirms that she’s very much of the now – Liam Payne and Nao also chip in with their latest efforts. True to the name, the podcast features a loose collection of tunes, tied together by very little logic, just like our chats. Nialler9 and Sally Cinnamon are your hosts. Another Love Story is the perfect gathering. A festival in a manor house in Meath where the audience was as integral to the vibe as the music and happenings. Lovingly organised with thoughtful programming (it finishes at 6.30 on a Sunday so it feels different to others) with attention to details down to the aesthetic of the bins. Part of its intimacy extends to the library and front room where talks and performances happen and a sprinkle of spontaneity hangs in the air. Donal Lunny might show up and lead a folk club, your mate might start being a literal windowlicker when you're recording a podcast as what happened when Loose Joints did a live recording of the pod with guests Conor O'Brien (Villagers) and Richie Egan (Jape). Giddy tunes, Skin flutes, cowboy trousers, artists who are doses or not, dubstep remixes, being overshadowed by your duet collaborator, how to have a casual conversation with Bjork and outlier electronica are just some of the things we covered in our hour. Our first Loose Joints Podcast of the year with your hosts Nialler9 and Sally Cinnamon is here. Loose Joints is a podcast where the two of us talk to a guest about the music they love: old and new, and play some of those tunes. The podcast, true to the name features a loose collection of tunes, tied together by little logic, just like our chats which this month included a long conversation about how great Myspace was, why school should teach you how to do your taxes, the pleasure of browsing a record shop, under-rated Irish bands of recent years, getting back into guitars by going to raves and the reality of being in a band in 2017. Subscribe in iTunes. Also available in Stitcher, PocketCasts and TuneIn. Just in time for Christmas, the Loose Joints Podcast is back with a look at the best of 2016. The podcast features Nialler9 and Sally Cinnamon talking to a guest about the music they love: old and new.
This week's podcast was recorded in The Irish Times as part of Culture Night in association with the Herstory movement. In what is the first of a series of Herstory Salons, our panel included Irish Times columnist and playwright Hilary Fannin, history lecturer Dr Jennifer Redmond and Professor Linda Doyle of Trinity College Dublin. They discussed the significance of salons for women throughout history, the thrill of rediscovering lost stories of women and the importance of women engaging in the latest technological developments including the Internet of Things. Presented by Kathy Sheridan there is music from MayKay of Fight Like Apes (Kathy's daughter!) plus eloquent exchanges of views on everything from iconic female musicians to #WakingTheFeminists.
