George Chen and Mark Sue are both park investors who just purchased their first 11 space park a few weeks ago in Connecticut. We often take certain things for granted, especially when it comes to the autonomy of how a restaurant works. If designing and running one of the biggest and busiest restaurants in the Bay Area isn't a big enough task for you to underestimate, imagine conceptualizing and running sixteen of them. Maybe it would take someone with the business sense of a Wall Street banker, the mental fortitude of a China Town Big Boss, the connections of a million-miler doing deals from Shanghai to San Francisco and someone who sees and jumps at opportunities to improve their industry on an artistic and systematic level. I am thrilled that life brought us to this juncture where that person has agreed to sit down with us on #UpgradeMe. Potty Mouth DJ Delving deeper into what AI says I already do, I present to you, "Stream Of Consciousness Narrative." The "What's The Matter With Me?" podcast is a stream-of-consciousness narrative where the host, John, shares updates and thoughts on various topics that are currently on his mind. In this episode, John talks about a range of subjects, including his recent visit to urgent care, his experience with physical limitations due to multiple sclerosis, and his creative work on fundraising ads for a local radio station. He also mentions listening to the "Iowa's Newsworthy Past" podcast, gives a shoutout to his friend George Chen, who runs a music distribution platform, and reflects on the nature of his podcast as a support mechanism. Throughout the episode, John's narrative style is reflective and personal, touching on both humorous and serious topics. Artificial intelligence I like that, "reflective and personal." I'm starting to think that AI really gets me. Enough claptrap, let's dive right in. Is it a population thing Oklahoma and North Dakota have the fewest listeners to this podcast. California and New York have the most. Quit/Nah I am thinking about ending the podcast, what do you think? Use the contact form on whatsthematterwithme.org. Scratch that, if things seem bad, I'm going to think they're worse. I'll take no action. Funky Worm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A-GEBF4fTU From Beyond The Grave Listening to the Kurt Vonnegut interview cd from the back of my wife's old crashed car, he discusses how making a play is like getting yourself a new family. Listening to it, I felt that it related to how volunteering at KFJC provided support at a time when I had changed my lifestyle. I had moved from Brooklyn, to East San Jose, and I was looking for a new scene. Thee Song Candidate Shout out to Rocky who wrote in saying she dug the new theme song candidate from last episode, "Goru." I admit that it was heavily influenced by if not completely derivative of The Body & OAA, but maybe that isn't a bad thing. In Between The Lines Of Age Having my doctors tell me that my leg is useless or that my hand is paralyzed reminds me of when my kids used to say, "You can't use your hand", and then I would put a piece of paper in it. And say, "what about this?" Listening without intention Iowa's Newsworthy Past is a podcast with about 200 episodes consisting of readings from pretty old Iowa newspapers. You can listen to it really hard or you can zone out and let time and space melt away. Acquiring Legitimacy George Chen's Zum Audio Vol 5 compilation was on bandcamp radio last week and that's a pretty big deal even for an accomplished polymath gadfly like George.

IT CAME FROM AQUARIUS RECORDS is a feature-length documentary about the SF-based independent record store, Aquarius Records. Having closed in 2016 after 47 years, this small apartment-sized store championed local, underground, independent, and challenging music to the masses - most memorably with their infamous bi-weekly, college essay-length, new-release lists. This doc has interviews with the aQ owners dating back to 1970, other record store owners from around the world, musicians, label heads, music journalists, and INTENSE music collectors. Interviewees include Matt Groening (The Simpsons), Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips), Bruce Ackley, John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats), Ty Segall, and Liz Harris (Grouper).Aquarius Records influenced and enriched countless peoples' musical tastes with their curated selections - but this film also shows the realities of an indie record store trying to survive in an increasingly difficult market of brick-and-mortar music shops, especially in the ever-changing and price-gouging Mission District of SF. Six years in the making, the film has a very personal angle, with lots of behind-the-scenes footage (and drama) that shows both the joy and excruciating stress that comes with running — and closing — a store like this.Upcoming screenings:Oct 4th 6 pm Los Angeles City College w Howie KleinOct 6th Tucson Film and Music FestivalNovember 1st, 7pm Nitehawk Cinema, Williamsburg BrooklynFilm screening, followed by a moderated Q+A, with:Kenneth ThomasBrian Turner (The Brian Turner Show, WFMU)Jeremy DeVine (Founder / President of Temporary Residence Records)Jon Fine (Bitch Magnet, Author of Your Band Sucks: What I Saw at Indie Rock's Failed Revolution (but Can No Longer Hear))Emil Amos (Grails, Om, Holy Sons)Moderated by Anna Lopez (Temporary Residence Records, Union Pool)Nov 4th & 5th Doc Utah St. George, UtahKenneth Thomas is a teacher and filmmaker from Arcata, California. He also served as their News Videographer, documenting stories on the front lines, like Earth First's controversial fight to save the old-growth redwood forests. After receiving his MFA in Film at San Francisco Art Institute, Kenneth completed his 5-year long film project, a feature-length music documentary called Blood, Sweat + Vinyl: DIY in the 21st Century. Featuring over a dozen multi-camera live concert shoots and 20 interviews about independent heavy metal music culture, the film has screened in over two dozen film and music festivals on every continent (except Antarctica) and is currently being independently distributed. This documentary led to him directing two music videos for bands in the film, one of which aired on MTV's Headbanger's Ball.Kenneth currently teaches Live TV Production and Audio Production at Los Angeles City College, with occasional freelance stints as a key camera operator for live multi-camera streams of LA Philharmonic concerts, and directing live multi-camera streams of heavy metal concerts in Boston and Los Angeles.Artist Windy Chien is best known for her 2016 work, The Year of Knots, in which she learned a new knot every day for a year. We review the controversial Woodstock 99: Peace, Love, and Rage (directed by Garrett Price) out now on HBOMax.Boomer nostalgia meets nu metal in a fight where no one wins. The ceremonies took place in Rome, New York in 1999, three decades after the initial Woodstock festival. Seemingly small logistics issues roll into a massive (and literal) shitshow, sprinkled with arson, sexual assaults, and at least one fatality.Do Bill Simmons' and HBO lay the blame where it belongs, or are they re-exploiting these events for a quick payday two decades later? Our returning guest is Cory Sklar aka Chaki. Chaki is a funky alien wizard from Outer Space. With his unique take on electro funk, he has brought his weird ass stage show to festivals like Noise Pop and The Offbeat Fest. The rest of the story of this giant of the faith who was martyred for facing down on of history's most evil Goliaths; plus, the incredible miracle account of Amy Carmichael; the courageous life and faith of George Chen who was imprisoned for decades in China for being a Christian; the fall of Hitler and the final words and courage of Bonhoeffer before he was executed for standing up to the dictator; and knowing the truth that It is not who you are that holds you back, it is who you think you're not.

George and Paco talk to the filmmaking team behind the HBO docuseries - Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults. Director and Producer Clay Tweel and Producer Shannon Riggs chronicled the three-decade long saga of Marshall Appelwhite and Bonnie Nettles (AKA “Do and Ti”) who recruited scores of people to their alien-worshipping religious cult starting in the mid -'70s. Interviewing former group members, cult experts, and family left behind, the four-part series goes beyond the headlines of this little-understood group that ended in a mass suicide in Southern California in 1997.Clay Tweel is a documentary director/producer/editor whos works include Make Believe, Print the Legend, personal Sup Doc favorite Finders Keepers, Out of Omaha,The Innocent Man, and Gleason. His features have been distributed by Showtime, Netflix, and Amazon Studios. Producer Shannon Riggs is the co-founder of Parkside Films. With Clay Tweel, she produced Gleason and The Innocent Man series. Shannon was an independent producer working across narrative feature films, branded content, and music videos. A participant in the Sundance Female Filmmaker Initiative, Shannon is honored to be a member of Women in Film and actively mentors emerging filmmakers. We finally tackle all-time classic Grey Gardens! Our guest is comedian Amber Preston. The Maysles Brothers were approached by Jackie Onassis to make a movie about the Bouvier family. During the filming, their camera gravitated to The crumbling Long island estate known as Grey Gardens occupied by eccentric relatives “big and little Edie”. It’s a hot mess of co-dependence, animal feces, American aristocracy in decline, and corn.Amber Preston has appeared on national commercials for Buffalo Wild Wings and Booking.com, at numerous festivals from Sketchfest to Gilda’s Laughfest (where she was named “Best of the Midwest”), and even on Marc Maron’s “Five Comedians to Watch” list for Vulture. Along with hosting Los Angeles shows The Cut and Punchline Punchout, she recently released her debut album Sparkly Parts on Stand Up! George covers a lot of ground with Chris Metzler, Quinn Costello, and Jeff Springer; co-directors of Rodents of Unusual Size. Documentary about the nutria overtaking and destroying Louisiana's swamp land. I also ask Chris and Jeff about their earlier collaborations, Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone and Plagues & Pleasures On the Salton Sea, and their work as Tilapia Film.We learn about nutria itch and the right lighting for country music videos, among other things. Hard headed Louisiana fisherman Thomas Gonzales doesn't know what will hit him next. After decades of hurricanes and oil spills he faces a new threat - hordes of monstrous 20 pound swamp rats. Known as “nutria”, these invasive South American rodents breed faster than the roving squads of hunters can control them. And with their orange teeth and voracious appetite they are eating up the coastal wetlands that protects Thomas and his town of Delacroix Island from hurricanes. But the people who have lived here for generations are not the type of folks who will give up without a fight. Thomas and a pack of lively bounty hunters are hellbent on saving Louisiana before it dissolves beneath their feet. It is man vs. rodent. May the best mammal win.Rodents of Unusual Size on Kanopy, AppleTV, Amazon Prime.Everyday Sunshine: The Story of FishbonePlagues & Pleasures On The Salton SeaFollow Rodents Of Unusual Size on:Twitter: @rousdocumentaryInstagram: @rousdocumentaryFollow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.

George and Paco sit down with musician and journalist Kevin Seal to recap Alex Winter’s 2020 documentary Zappa. On this episode we have three different Frank Zappa fans ranging from George, who is new to Zappa’s music, to Kevin, who loves Zappa but occasionally needs a break to Paco, who has been a life long Zappa-head. We get into many topics including: would Zappa be a Trumper, our collective love of Ruth Underwood, Steve Vai’s audition, how art should be a threat to the establishment, Gail Zappa, being an archivist, Captain Beefheart, Edgard Varèse and much more!Frank Zappa – you either love him or hate him. There is no in between. There have been a few Zappa documentaries out in the last few years but this time it would seem that Alex Winter is a fan first and filmmaker second. “Zappa” is a six-years-in-the-making love letter. Alex was given the family’s blessing and access to the prolific musician’s personal vault and he used as much as he could. We are privy to rarely seen and heard music, films, home movies and interviews up to the point of being just a few months before Zappa’s death in 1993.Kevin Seal has been writing and recording unfashionable music since the ’90s. His band Griddle released four studio records, including a concept album about Olympic athletes and cannibalism. He has played and sung on albums by 20 Minute Loop, Michael Zapruder, and more. Since the shelter-at-home began, he has co-hosted a music game show called Lo Fidelity. Today we recap an all-time classic, Capturing The Friedmans, and get into a lively debate about how this documentary stacks up in today’s world. Was director Andrew Jarecki irresponsible in how he handled the footage and information he had? Was there a bias towards helping Jesse? Will our guest Curtis Cook and Paco ever see eye-to-eye on this doc? Listen to find out!The true crime documentary Capturing The Friedmans was directed by Andrew Jarecki. Released in 2003, this was Jarecki’s first film and was subsequently nominated for an Academy Award. While preparing a documentary about children’s birthday party entertainers, Jarecki learned that professional clown David Friedman, was the son and brother of two men who had been convicted of child sexual abuse in a high-profile 1980s criminal trial. Using home videos made by the Friedman family before and during the trial, Jarecki explores the conflicting stories of the accused, the alleged victims and the investigators as this modern day Greek tragedy unfolds on film. There are many documentaries like Capturing The Friedmans but somehow this doc is entirely unforgettable. Our guest Curtis Cook is a writer and standup comedian living in Los Angeles. He’s puked after a keg stand on a show called Flophouse, traveled through an Ebola checkpoint for a segment on Vice News, and awkwardly interacting with Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein during a sketch on Portlandia. Most recently, Curtis’ standup has appeared on Comedy Central, where he also wrote for the reboot of Crank Yankers and was a writer/correspondent for the WGA Award nominated The Jim Jefferies Show.*Brendan Lynch's "clown joke" is not really a clown joke*Curtis' shutdown talk show The End Is NightFollow Curtis Cook on:Twitter: @curtis_cookInstagram: @curtsicookcomedyFollow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.
Paco and George are pleased to have on today’s guest Tylor Norwood the director of Robin’s Wish. This documentary centers around the final years of Robin Williams and the confusion around why this comedy icon killed himself in 2014.After his death, the media narrative skewed the facts surrounding why Williams died. It wasn’t until a coroner’s report that the complexity of his situation was better understood: he had a severe case of Lewy Body Syndrome.Williams’ widow, Susan Schneider Williams, has become a championing voice for the little-known form of dementia with Lewy Bodies. Showing the frailty of a suffering genius in his last months, Robins Wish is the first time the public is seeing this side of Williams’ life. This story is lovingly crafted by director Tylor Norwood, who has been a guest on Sup Doc for his previous documentary, The United States of Detroit. Tylor was approached by Susan to tell this story, and his team tracked down friends and neighbors while laying out the details of a fairly obscure disease that is very difficult to diagnose.Robin’s Wish comes out on Video on Demand (VOD) everywhere on September 1st.Follow Tylor on:Twitter: @tylornorwoodInstagram: @tylornorwoodFollow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.
Today Paco and George are joined by Dakin Hardwick to recap the new Showtime documentary The Go Go’s. Notably the first all-femme band to write their own songs, play their own instruments, and snag a #1 US album. Directed by Allison Ellwood, this straightforward music documentary looks at the LA group's rise, reign and breakup, along with youthful ambition, firings, drugs, rehab, money squabbles, breakup, and inevitable reunions.Dakin Hardwick is the one of the founders of Spinning Platters, a website started by a small group of Bay Area based music fans. He was not a writer before starting this blog, and honed my craft in the public eye. The blog is still alive and well after a decade on the internet, even managing to continue to put out content during the COVID crisis. In addition to managing the blog, Dakin has managed to work in music his entire adult life, starting out as a clerk at Wherehouse Music, interning for both Universal Music Distribution and Six Degrees records, and then working at Ticketfly throughout the entire lifespan of the company, then eventually landing at Eventbrite, working on their Music venue product up until the COVID pandemic wiped out the industry, causing the company to let go a large percentage of it’s staff. Dakin, along with fellow Spinning Platters founder Gordon Elgart, occasionally hosts music trivia in San Francisco.Dakin currently lives in Oakland, CA, and is hunting for a full time day job while raising his 1-year old daughter, making sure she understands the importance of listening to music that will alienate her from her peers.Dakin's new podcast How Did I Get Here?Follow Dakin on:Twitter: @vagueofthronesInstagram: @friedoxygenFollow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.

We look at the 2016 documentary A Genuine Forger (Un Vrai Faussaire) directed by Jean-Luc Leon. Available on Amazon Prime. Our guest is comedian and podcaster Scott Simpson. This doc profiles Guy Ribes, one of the world's most notorious art forgers. For over three decades Ribes scored major deals selling works by Picasso, Matisse, and other legends, with a twist: He painted the works himself. Fake heirs, ruthless dealers, and more - it's all here in this documentary. We also talk about the current state of comedy, Paco being conned when he first moved to San Francisco, and how we want our con-men to be part Robin Hood. As our guest stated “I love art, fakes, and con men. Great forgers are all three”. Scott Simpson is a comedian based in San Francisco, but his career started in the corporate world. He helped create and run the Apple iTunes podcast store and later did the same with iBooks. Now,, he's a full time comedian and performer. His show "You Look Nice Today" received the Podcast Award for Best Comedy Podcast. He produces the most popular independent standup show in San Francisco, Cheaper Than Therapy, which -until recent events intervened- entertained over 500 comedy fans per week.
