Long before folks enjoyed watching oddball viral videos on the Internet, the only way to see these outrageous movies was to share physical video cassette tapes from person to person. One of the stars of this tape sharing phenomenon was musician Jan Terri, whose wonderfully weird music videos got the attention of a lot of people, including celebrities Marilyn Manson and his girlfriend at the time Rose McGowan. Manson even had Jan open for him in concert. After taking some time off for personal reasons, Jan made a spectacular comeback in the early days of YouTube when the video for her song “Losing You” became a hit as the “Worst Music Video Ever.” It still ranks as the top video for the term, with 5.9 million views to date.Today counterculture legend Jan Terri joins us to look at her roller coaster life in music, putting out a children's book and a cookbook for folks living in dorms and life as an accidental internet superstar, long before there was an Internet. A new episode on Monday, which we plan on making the norm going forward. THE KINGS start their episode with a brief tribute to deceased rock/proto-punk legend WAYNE KRAMER of the MC5. Brother Wayne pioneered the sound of punk rock and without him, we might not be doing any of this stuff. After that, the KINGS delve into morbid recent events - specifically, the alleged crimes of one Justin Mohn. Justin Mohn, a now-infamous "overeducated white man", declared war on the United States Federal Government in a YouTube video posted to social media. The same YouTube video also featured Justin showing off his father Michael Mohn's (an Army Corps of Engineers employee) decapitated head in a plastic bag. Authorities found a large kitchen knife at the scene of the crime (which Justin Mohn had fled, headed for a National Guard Training Center - presumably targeting more federal employees). Grim stuff. But this isn't "Kings of True Crime", this is a punk rock podcast. A music podcast more broadly. Your cohosts focus on Pennsylvania man Justin Mohn's very unique musical offerings. Justin Mohn's music, characterized by haunting melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, challenges conventional norms and pushes boundaries. That last sentence? That's how Justin Mohn's music should have been pitched when Justin Mohn emailed record labels. As you'll learn in this episode, the emails he actually sent did not say that. The KINGS compare his music with that of other musicians who killed people, and begin to touch on the concept of "Outsider Music".
Wesley Willis was truly one of the strangest dudes to ever touch a keyboard. A street artist and independent musician from Chicago's south side, Wesley self-produced dozens of CDs before amassing a grassroots cult following among hipsters and music nerds. Wesley was a consummate "outsider artist"; his songs are basically little more than spoken word rants belted over a pre-programmed keyboard track. His lyrics cover all manner of oddities from McDonald's to gangsters to Sucking a Camel's Ass. Wesley himself was a barely-functional eccentric who suffered from schizophrenia and liked to headbutt everyone he met. So why do so many people adore his music? Well it's one of those things you just have to hear in order to understand. His songs are hilarious, charming, and 100% original, and his life story is as tragic and harrowing as anyone you'll read about.

This week's episode is about one of the most polarising bands of all time, The Shaggs!
In today's episode, Jake and Dave Yapp showcase Outsider Music - that particular body of work which appears to have rejected every musical organ. This doesn't really work as a line. There's something about bodies rejecting organs or something in there somewhere, but, ngl I have had a sherry. I am not being coy. Like when people say 'OOPS I MAY HAVE IMBIBED A SHANDY OR TWO HORRRHH HORRRHHH HORRHHHH' when they mean they've been doing Tequila for five hours. No, it turns out that Tesco and Sainsbury's both do a v good vegan sweet sherry. And it's nice, if you do alcohol. The honest truth is, I'm just making excuses. Helen, Betty and Dot Wiggin had no interest in being pop stars. Their dad, however, shaped his life around his mother's psychic predictions, and she had said that the girls would grow up to be rich and famous musicians. So he pulled them out of school and insisted that they form a band - The Shaggs. Isolated from the world outside their family and forced to compose on instruments they could barely play, the Wiggin girls lived a life that was as strange as their music. Named the ‘Godmothers of Outsider Music', The Shaggs found their true audience decades later in the most unexpected places.

For over 35 years I've followed in the wake of sparks emitted from this man's concentric musical and spiritual path. Daniel Higgs is prophetic poet-mystic-dimensional traveler. His bands, words, performances and art are full of ontological puns and zen koan-like observations. This was one of my most anticipated interviews of anyone I've spoken with. Since it was recorded over the phone, the sound quality wavers at times, but the transmissions are strong. Seldom Careful also beamed in from across the ocean to join me down the bottomless rabbit hole Mr Higgs dug with his bare hands. Seldom discussed his favorite album and song, and waxed philosophic about Lungfish (Higg's most well known and longest running project). I'm really beyond excited to share this episode with everyone.
On our bonus Halloween episode, we ask: What is Halloween music? Is Halloween music actually spooky? And, if not, what makes music spooky? To figure out the answers to these questions, we discuss and listen to everything from goth to surf, horrorpunk to horrorcore rap, old-time music to modern outsider artists, singing saws, theremins, and novelty songs.
This episode was a treat for me. I've been listening to Joe Baiza play since I was 14 and first heard Saccharine Trust on my local college station. Joe's guitar style is hard describe : its by turns angular and beautiful, capapble of expressing rage and sensuality in equal measure. Joe Baiza is a searcher at heart. You can hear it in his guitar tone and expression. Bottom line is that he is full of soul and has a lot going on in his head. It was a pleasure talking to him. My other podcast is End On End, and my cohost over there, Jeff Kaplan stopped by to take part in a Record War, as well as rhaspsodise about all things ST. Hope you enjoy this Metasode!
This episode we talk to the man who literally wrote the book on Outsider music, Irwin Chusid. It's a wide ranging and fascinating conversation. The final episode of Barely Human brings us into the present day with two punk bands who briefly caught the eye of the broader culture...for better or worse. First we find Low Life in Sydney, Australia: a satirical punk band who released an LP in 2014 that somehow got swept up in the #pizzagate scandal (kinda). Then we go back to New York City to find hardcore band Haram who played a fierce brand of hardcore that drew the attention of the FBI and NYPD's Joint Terrorism Taskforce in 2017. Barely Human is written and hosted by Max Easton, and produced by Jason L'Ecuyer and Output Media. In this episode, I give you three of my personal recommendations for albums to listen too during your shelter in place and social distancing practicing! Stay healthy out there folks!
The third episode of Barely Human is about two underground artists who are often placed in the uncomfortable category of the 'outsider musician.' We look at The Shaggs, a band from the '60s that comprised three sisters from small-town New Hampshire. They created their own unconventional sound and musical language as a result of their near-total isolation from the world around them. Then we turn to Roky Erickson: the frontperson of proto-hippy innovators the 13th Floor Elevators. He went from being an early counter-cultural figure to being sent to a hospital for the criminally insane, eventually creating a deep and overlooked body of solo works that included a self-made genre that he called 'horror rock.' Barely Human is written and hosted by Max Easton, and produced by Jason L'Ecuyer and Output Media. Red & Blue PLAY THEIR OWN RECORDS!! In the thick of Spooky Szn, time is limited, resources are waning, but things are gettin' creepy. During his hunt for Spooky media, Blue dove into the archives of his hard drives and came across a bunch of the music he (and sometimes Red) have recorded over the years and decided to set aside the Spooky tracks for Red & Blue to listen to and share with the world. It's a bit of a cop-out, but it's also a lot of fun to hear the weird, hauntingly eerie music that Red & Blue made during their very early years of marriage. Not much has changed...still weird, still Spooky.**NOTE: Red is allowed to touch whatever she wants in the house. The Theremin is a proximity-based instrument that is played without touching it......Blue isn't a control freak. Blue is an over-thinker.

Many will tilt their heads and squint their eyes when they hear his name as they wonder who this is. Wesley Willis was a cult phenomenon in the underground scene and throughout Outsider Music. And quite the talented artist. And a paranoid schizophrenic. Through his mental illness he made some of the most bizarre but also honest music you will ever listen to. Making him the perfect candidate to kick off our Mental Health Awareness Month series. We tell his story so that he can keep working to reach that goal of rock and roll legend. The beers chosen for this episode were Fuller's London Pride and Goose Island Parker Porter, so we could rock both cities. (Don't worry, you'll get the reference soon enough)

In this podcast, we share our thoughts and opinions on Bobby Tarantino II and Lil Boat 2

DJ Bus Replacement Serivce (pictured left) has been described by multidisciplinary artist Russell Haswell as "evil" and "like a policewoman". She has now left the UK. MC Toilet (pictured right) has been described by Brian Eno as "a visionary, a towering ellipsis of musicality, verve, passion and lyricism". He adds cohesion and class to an otherwise challenging playlist. This Oddcast is dedicated to Tony & William.
