Ione Skye on Rejection, Self-protection and Reconciling with Donovan

Erin & Elizabeth talk with Gen-X icon Ione Skye (Say Anything, River's Edge, Zodiac), the actress and author of the NYT-bestselling memoir SAY EVERYTHING. Ione's father is the 60s folk wizard and Sunshine Superman, Donovan. But while Donovan did claim Ione's brother Dono as his own, he referred to Ione since birth only as "the girl," only meeting her for the first time when she was by that point a famous teenager. Ione tells us about how his abandonment affected her early romantic relationships with musicians (Anthony Kiedis, Adam Horovitz), what her husband Ben Lee has taught her about consistency, love and fatherhood, and how the road from rejection to reconciliation is paved with self-protection.  This is a public episode. Unfiltered and uncensored, actress Ione Skye's memoir, SAY EVERYTHING (Gallery Books; Hardcover; on-sale March 4, 2025) offers a glimpse into a life lived at the intersection of Hollywood allure and personal exploration. Unlike anything Ione has done before, her memoir blends confessions, desire, and introspection in a way that transcends the typical celebrity narrative. A product of her varied and diverse career, SAY EVERYTHING reveals exactly what's on Skye's mind, intertwining compelling anecdotes from her personal and professional life with profound reflections on love, identity, and the pursuit of self-acceptance. Set against a backdrop of rock royalty compounds, supermodel cliques, and classic late-century films like River's Edge, Gas Food Lodging, and Wayne's World, SAY EVERYTHING is a wild ride of Hollywood thrills as well as a lyrical reflection on ambition, intimacy, and a messy, sexy, unconventional life. Born to the magnetic energy of a 1960s It Girl and the legendary musician Donovan, Skye navigated a landscape shaped by her father's absence and rejection. In her quest for connection, she became entwined with some of the brightest stars of her generation-Keanu Reeves, River Phoenix, Matthew Perry, John Cusack, and Robert Downey Jr.-as well as the rebellious spirit of '90s "bad girls." From her teenage relationship with Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to her breakout role in Say Anything to her marriage to Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys, Ione Skye was a Gen X icon. SAY EVERYTHING invites readers to experience a raw and poignant evolution, exploring themes of love, loss, and resilience set against the backdrop of the sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll of the early 90's.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Adam helps us examine music's impact over time, at a universal human level and a personal one. Adam and Jo discuss how music shapes us, and how - as insights and marketing professionals - we can use this to design things that better serve what people are looking for in their lives. Adam also expresses how music can help you look outside what's comfortable and familiar, to learn new ways of thinking, feeling and understanding.  -- To look beyond the familiar, Adam is a proponent of constant learning. He continually listens to new genres, artists and songs outside his regular collection. He believes this kind of learning means continual newness in what you're exposed to, from a variety of places that are less familiar to you. Adam recommends you explore music further by checking out these music biographies: https://www.amazon.com/Beastie-Boys-Book-Michael-Diamond/dp/0812995546/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1653238628&sr=8-2 (Beastie Boys Book by Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz.) https://www.amazon.com/Decoded-Jay-Z/dp/1400068924/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1HSALAJK2DE4Z&keywords=Decoded+by+Jay-Z+book&qid=1653238673&sprefix=decoded+by+jay-z+book%2Caps%2C67&sr=8-1 (Decoded by Jay-Z). https://www.amazon.com/Go-Ahead-Rain-Called-American/dp/1477316485/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1IHJZBDFUTP88&keywords=Go+Ahead+In+The+Rain%3A+Notes+to+A+Tribe+Called+Quest+by+Hanif+Abdurraqib&qid=1653238699&sprefix=go+ahead+in+the+rain+notes+to+a+tribe+called+quest+by+hanif+abdurraqib%2Caps%2C96&sr=8-1 (Go Ahead In The Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest by Hanif Abdurraqib). https://www.amazon.com/Catch-Fire-Timothy-White-audiobook/dp/B00C78VNHC/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1LZ90J4OB9BTI&keywords=Catch+A+Fire%3A+The+Life+Of+Bob+Marley+by+Timothy+White&qid=1653238722&sprefix=catch+a+fire+the+life+of+bob+marley+by+timothy+white+%2Caps%2C92&sr=8-1 (Catch A Fire: The Life Of Bob Marley by Timothy White). https://www.amazon.com/Acid-for-Children-Flea-audiobook/dp/B07H7TJCK9/ref=sr_1_1?crid=32VXI868HN8GC&keywords=Acid+For+the+Children+by+Flea&qid=1653238746&s=audible&sprefix=acid+for+the+children+by+flea%2Caudible%2C84&sr=1-1 (Acid For the Children by Flea). https://www.amazon.com/Its-So-Easy-Duff-McKagan-audiobook/dp/B01KKOG7ES/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2IS4CCHATEQW5&keywords=It%E2%80%99s+So+Easy+And+Other+Lies+by+Duff+McKagan&qid=1653238775&s=audible&sprefix=it+s+so+easy+and+other+lies+by+duff+mckagan%2Caudible%2C53&sr=1-1 (It's So Easy And Other Lies by Duff McKagan). https://www.amazon.com/Being-John-Lennon-Ray-Connolly-audiobook/dp/B07YLBW9JB/ref=sr_1_1?crid=114HL4EUKUMCA&keywords=Being+John+Lennon%3A+A+Restless+Life+by+Ray+Connolly&qid=1653238795&s=audible&sprefix=being+john+lennon+a+restless+life+by+ray+connolly%2Caudible%2C58&sr=1-1 (Being John Lennon: A Restless Life by Ray Connolly). https://www.amazon.com/Passion-Fashion-Real-Story-Clash/dp/030681434X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=36QLTZDHUP0PF&keywords=Passion+Is+a+Fashion%3A+The+Real+Story+Of+The+Clash+by+Pat+Gilbert&qid=1653238815&s=audible&sprefix=passion+is+a+fashion+the+real+story+of+the+clash+by+pat+gilbert%2Caudible%2C78&sr=1-1 (Passion Is a Fashion: The Real Story Of The Clash by Pat Gilbert)....

[CONNECTION SUCCESSFUL] There will come a time, in the not-too-distant future, when robots will overtake most of the jobs that we humans presently perform. This includes content creation. Machine learning technologies and AI capabilities are growing by the second. AI-generated content will certainly soon be proliferating on the Internet, with consumers less likely to be capable of differentiating between robot content and genuine products of the creative human brain. In the spirit of embracing the near-limitless potential of AI technology, a very special bonus episode of Lightnin' Licks Radio has been "created" in collaboration with the "good" people at Umbrella Laboratories. Welcome to the future, Lickers. An AI application (Diltrizatron 20000) was tasked to analyze every second of content released by Lightnin' Licks Radio from its inception to present day. The application was then programmed to create a new bonus episode reviewing the podcast's past episodes, including generating host personalities (JAKE and DEONDRA) to interact with each other as well as the listening audience in Podcast America. This audio upload contains the resulting episode. Sonic contributors to this bonus episode of Lightning Licks Radio include: Lee Moses. Holland Dozier Holland. Brothers Johnson. James Todd Smith. SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE WTF?!? That's what goes through my head every time I think of the Beastie Boys. ONE because how is it these self-described funky-punky idiots were one of the main acts that changed the face of music in the 1980s? TWO because how did they then become well respected innovators, outspoken activists & legends, with a long career to rival the biggest acts of any genre? THIRD because how can it all be over?!? So much of the Beastie Boys story makes no sense that it almost DOES make sense that one of them would be dead, and almost a DECADE AGO. But no, not even that computes. These were three guys – great friends, bandmates & collaborators – who always came back together, no matter what happened in the interim. Unexpected successes. Career pressures. Explorations beyond the bounds of accepted form. Life changes. Hiatuses that seemed to go on forever but were way shorter than, say, the wait for Chinese Democracy. No matter what happened, they always came back. And then Adam Yauch died. The soul of the band the way Terry Kath was the soul of Chicago. The difference is while Chicago soldiered on and reinvented in both clever and disappointing ways, the Beasties – now Adam Horovitz & Mike Diamond – realized that carrying on without MCA would NOT be the Beastie Boys. So as usual, when Dumb Death gets in the way, we're left with memories & reissues & the hopes for more funky innovation crushed. I respect Ad Rock & Mike D's decision to shift gears, and love that they put out such a freakin' comprehensive love letter to music, their awesome threesome-ness, and Adam Yauch that is their 2020 mega quad pack Beastie Boys Book, the documentary Beastie Boys Story, the compilation album Beastie Boys Music, and Spike Jonze's photo tribute Beastie Boys. It was an explosion of beautiful energy that I can only hope results in more. As for the actual music, License to Ill is deep in my DNA. My music wouldn't be my music without it. Their next three albums moved – LEAPED – the hip hop & general music conversation forward in three different ways, with Ill Communication being my fave because it was a distillation of all three of them. Plus I just love mid ‘90s hip hop. Hello Nasty proved they could top the charts fifteen years out, and was their personal favorite. To the 5 Boroughs reminded me why I love NYC so much, and has lyrics I remember to this day. And Hot Sauce Committee Part Two reminded everyone else that they were in complete command of both creation AND the charts straight to the end. You wanna hear their influence on me? Listen to just about anything, but start here: REC – “The Power of Repetition (Everlasting)” (from the album Syncopy for the Weird) Are you a Beasties fan? If so, what's your favorite album? How did you feel about Adam Yauch's death? Do you wish Adam H. & Mike D. would still create music together, and/or do you understand why they've all but retired? Discuss dammit! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-dematteo/support

Michael Diamond and Adam Horovitz deal with many of the typical challenges of middle age, but they're still deeply in touch with the alter egos they created four decades ago: Mike D and Ad-Rock. They tell Marc about running wild as kids in late-70s/early-80s New York City, meeting their bandmate Adam “MCA” Yauch, collaborating and then falling out with Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons, the differences between opening for Madonna and opening for Run-DMC, and the honest self-reflection prompted by the music and style of their early years. This episode is sponsored by Springsteen On Broadway: The Complete Live Performance Album, Holmes & Watson, Stamps.com, and Squarespace. David Swinson began his career at the height of the punk rock movement in the early 1980s. After attending California State University as a film major, he booked and promoted punk rock and alternative music at Fender’s Ballroom, Melody Dance Center and Bogart’s Nightclub in Long Beach, California. Swinson also started a Wednesday night evening of conversation and spoken word at Bogart’s with luminaries such as Hunter S. Thompson, Dr. Timothy Leary, John Waters and Jim Carroll. After several years of booking, promoting, as well as developing lasting relationships with such people as Timothy Leary and Hunter S. Thompson, it was a natural segue to develop and co-produce Sound Bites from the Counter Culture for Atlantic Records in 1990. This spoken-word compilation featured writers, orators and politicians, including Thompson, Leary, Carroll, Abbie Hoffman, and Eugene McCarthy. Billboard called the album “essential listening.” In 1990, while having drinks with Timothy Leary and friend Bill Stankey, an idea for an offbeat buddy film entitled “Roadside Prophets” was conceived. The film eventually found a home with FineLine Features and was distributed theatrically by New Line Cinema. The film starred John Doe (of the band X) and Adam Horovitz (of the Beastie Boys) and featured Timothy Leary, John Cusack, David Carradine and Arlo Guthrie. Over the past few years, “Roadside Prophets” has become a cult classic among young viewers. In 1994, Swinson pursued another passion – law enforcement. He returned to his home base of Washington DC, where he joined the Metropolitan Police Department. Swinson began his career as a police officer in uniform. He was then assigned to the Gun Recovery Unit as a tactical officer. Shortly after that, Swinson was assigned as a plainclothes/undercover officer, targeting narcotics and crimes in progress. In 1998, Swinson was assigned to the Third District Detectives Office as an investigator, where he covered offenses ranging from burglary and armed robbery to homicide. In 2000, he was promoted to detective and was eventually assigned to the department’s Special Investigations Bureau/Major Crimes, and was the lead investigator in the District of Columbia for investigating serial burglaries, high profile cases and organized criminal operations related to narco-fencing. Swinson is a highly decorated member of the Metropolitan Police Department, having received numerous awards including the department’s prestigious Detective of the Year Award for 2003; Meritorious Service Medals for significant, outstanding and sustained achievements; Achievement Medals of Honor for a significant case investigation and several Department of Justice, United States Attorney’s Annual Law Enforcement Awards for significant case investigations. He has also received two major awards from Target Corporation for outstanding community service.

Poetry from Adam Horovitz, the poetry judge in the inaugural Bare Fiction Prize for Poetry 2014. It seems fitting to launch the Bare Fiction Prize with a reading by one of our judges, so today we have poetry from Adam Horovitz. Adam’s new book, A Thousand Laurie Lees is a poetic memoir of his time growing up in the Slad Valley. He moved there with his parents, the poets Michael and Frances Horovitz, shortly after he was born in 1971. And it’s evident that the Gloucestershire countryside has been a fantastic inspiration for much of Adam’s writing. A Thousand Laurie Lees is a truly wonderful book, published by The History Press (UK: June 2014, USA & Canada: Sep 1st 2014). This live recording was made on April 30th 2014 at the Gwdihw Cafe Bar in Cardiff during the launch of issue 2 of the magazine. You’ll hear five of Adam’s poems in all including poems from A Thousand Laurie Lees and from his collection Turning (Headland Publications 2011). Poems: House Built from Cloth Cheese Kisses Roots * Dandelion Clock The Memory of Water Roots was first Printed in Bare Fiction Magazine Issue 1 (December 2013) For details of the Bare Fiction Prize visit: www.barefictionmagazine.co.uk/competitions/ Make sure you check back every Thursday for the best in new poetry, fiction and plays. Helen Mark explores the newly safeguarded 'Laurie Lee Wood' and meets the people who inhabit the 21st Century 'Cider with Rosie' Landscape. Earlier this year Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust had an unprecedented response to its appeal to save a plot of ancient woodland. It had once belonged to Slad Valley's beloved son, Laurie Lee. Having become too much for the author and playwright's remaining family to maintain, the trust launched an appeal to take it over. In this week's Open Country Helen Mark meets the people who saved this land and the community that still find inspiration in this valley today including Julie and Simon Cooper at 'The Cider Farm' where they now handcraft frames for old master paintings, artist Amanda Lawrence who draws inspiration from the natural landscape and captures her work in glass and writer Adam Horovitz who is capturing his own 'Cider with Rosie' experience on paper.
