Jim Jarmusch az amerikai független filmes világ korai, ikonikus figurája. Filmjei gyakran felborítják a műfaji konvenciókat, a karakterközpontú történetmesélésre helyezve a hangsúlyt. A Down By Law (Törvénytől sújtva, 1986) a rendező egyik korai mesterműve, amelyben már jelentős szerepet kapnak a Jarmusch karakteres vonásai. A fő szerepekben iszonyú menő zenészek bukkannak fel (Tom Waits, John Lurie) a feltörekvő Roberto Benigni mellett, ennek megfelelően a film zenéje is felejthetetlen. A minimalista vizuális stílust Robby Müller makulátlanul megkomponált fekete-fehér képei teremtik meg, amelyekhez kitűnően passzol Jarmusch feketébe hajló humora. Mik a Tövénytől sújtva közös pontjai az örök független Jim Jarmusch későbbi filmjeivel? Hogyan lehet jellemezni Jarmusch minimalista stílusának a vonzerejét? Mi érdekelte őt New Orleansszal kapcsolatban, amit ebben a filmben akart vászonra vinni? Milyen a három fő szerepben John Lurie, Tom Waits és Roberto Benigni? This week on the show, we're so pleased to welcome John Lurie. Perhaps you know him from his work in films like Stranger Than Paradise, Down By Law, Paris Texas, or The Last Temptation of Christ; or maybe you know him better for his music—groups like The Lounge Lizards, his trailblazing avant-garde jazz unit, or his fictional bluesman persona Marvin Pontiac, or the John Lurie National Orchestra. Or maybe you know him from his pioneering and singular television shows, 1991's surreal nature program Fishing With John, or the more recent Painting With John, which ran on HBO from 2021-2023.  This week, he joins host Jason P. Woodbury for a freewheeling chat, his book, The History of Bones: A Memoir, his Hollywood adventures, and Music From Painting With John, which drops via Royal Potato Family on March 15th. There was a time, believe it or not, when the channel Bravo was willing to pay for some “celebrities” and a camera crew to get out of their comfort zones, go on various excursions around the world, and watch the sparks fly as they bicker, backstab, and try to make “reality” look fun for the audiences back home. That time was 1991. Those celebrities were John Lurie, Jim Jarmusch, Tom Waits, Matt Dillon, Willem Dafoe, and Dennis Hopper. They made 6 episodes.  Bravo never explored this format further. This week on the show, a conversation with pianist, composer, bandleader, and writer, Vijay Iyer. He's been at it since 1995, recording for labels like Savoy, Pi, and ECM, and he's collaborated with a diverse and inspiring roster along the way including Amiri Baraka, Matana Roberts, Das Racist, previous Transmissions guest Wadada Leo Smith, and many more. His records have incorporated electronic music and spoken word, chamber jazz reverence and loose, free falling blues.  Last year, in collaboration with vocalist Arooj Aftab and bassist Shazhad Ismaily, he released Love in Exile on the Verve label. Writing about the album for our 2023 Year in Review, we called it “A spectral meeting of the minds. This haunting and luminous se…locates a nexus between ambient, jazz, and classical, all while feeling entirely conjured in the moment—because it was.”  Now he's back with a new ECM release, Compassion, and in another trio, reuniting with his bandmates on 2021's stirring Uneasy, bassist Linda May Han Oh and drummer Tyshawn Sorey. Produced by Manfred Eicher, it's a stunning listen start to finish, from its meditative and expansive title track to the dug down groove of “Ghostrumental,” a startling showcase for may Han Oh's thoughtful melodicism, to the thoughtfully chosen covers of Roscoe Mitchell's “Nonaah” and Stevie Wonder's “Overjoyed,” everything about Compassion demonstrates the intentional focus of Iyer and his collaborators. He joins host Jason P. Woodbury to speak about it, reflect on the post-pandemic nebulousness in the air, discuss his mentors Greg Tate and Baraka, and much more.  For heads, by heads. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its patrons. Who smoked more: academics like John Cage, La Monte Young and Vladamir Ussachevsky- or the underground scenesters, like Glenn Branca, Arthur Russel and Laurie Anderson? Why is turntablist Christian Marclay on the cover of "Transfigured New York," but not in the book, even though she interviewed him multiple times? Could AI design be to blame? How did the old guard of "New Music" feel about the commodification of computer-based music production four decades ago? In the 1980s, Brooke Wentz hosted a radio show in the middle of the night that focused on experimental music, which was developing all around her in New York City. Over the course of a decade, many of the artists Brooke played on that show would join her in the studio. Her journalism days are through, (now she works on the business side of the industry) but she has just released a book with selected interviews back in the day called “Transfigured New York: Interviews with Experimental Artists and Musicians," available now from Columbia University Press. This may be a bit of a shock to you, but I'll say it- I'm a big fan of oral history interviews, and I'm a big fan of experimental music. I'm pleased to feature Brooke and her work here today, which includes a couple of clips from her interviews (with Morton Subotnik and John Lurie, respectively). She joins me today from a working holiday somewhere in Mexico. The artwork for this episode is a drawing by my kid Camille, based on a photo from "back when" sent to me by today's guest. Terrific. Next, we talk about the incredible ensemble that brings Lynch's romance to life, praising especially the brilliance of its leads Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern as well as supporting performers like Diane Ladd (Laura Dern's real life mother, who netted an Oscar nod for her work in the film) and Willem Dafoe as one of Lynch's most memorable villains. Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

In “Lies and Distortion,” the opening essay of his book Unstrung: Rants And Stories Of a Noise Guitarist, Marc Ribot writes: “We seem to love broken voices in general: vocal cords eroded by whiskey and screaming, the junked-out weakness of certain horn players, distortion which signifies surpassing the capabilities of a tube or a speaker—voices that damage, but (at least in performance) don't actually die…Was this always true? I don't know.” In a way, that speaks to Ribot's own playing, on his own and with many luminary collaborators. Though he can certainly play delicately, a frayed, beyond-the-limit quality informs Ribot's sensibility. Since 2008, he's released records with Ceramic Dog—a band featuring Ribott on vocals and guitar, previous Transmissions guest Shazhad Ismaily on bass and vocals, and Ches Smith on drums and vocals. On July 14th, the band releases another scalded and electrifying record with Connection.  Ribot is our guest this week on the show, and we're pleased to present this rollicking, and at times charmingly contentious talk this on Transmissions. From his complicated relationship with his former Lounge Lizards collaborator John Lurie, to his views on how labor and capitalism inform his relationship with music, his history as a collaborator, Hal Willner's Night Music, his recent embrace of the Gibson SG, and much more, this is a charged chat with a jazz-punk creative icon.  Transmissions is part of the Talkhouse Podcast network, check out Talkhouse for more great reading and listening. This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with musician trumpeter, slide trumpeter, arranger/composer and bandleader from New York City, Steven Bernstein. Steven is best known for his work in The Lounge Lizards, Sexmob, Spanish Fly, and the Millennial Territory Orchestra. He has released four albums under his own name on John Zorn's Tzadik Records and he has performed with jazz giants including Roswell Rudd, Sam Rivers, Don Byron, and Medeski, Martin & Wood, as well as musicians ranging from Aretha Franklin to Lou Reed, from Linda Ronstadt to Digable Planets, from Sting to Courtney Love. Steven was a member of Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble band, playing in Helm's Woodstock home, as well as touring with the band. As an arranger he has written for Bill Frisell, Rufus Wainwright, and Elton John, just to name a few. He has composed for dance, theater, film and television, and with composer John Lurie, arranged the scores to many feature films, including Get Shorty. While Steven is prolific with his output, this episode centers on two of his projects, Sexmob, which just released a terrific new album called The Hard Way, and The Millennial Territory Orchestra, which recently released four excellent records, in one day, on the Royal Potato Family label. Sexmob's latest release is a bit of a departure for the band, as with producer Scotty Hard at the board, The Hard Way skews decisively electronic. On it, Hard's beats and soundscapes provide Steven, saxophonist Briggan Krauss, bassist Tony Scherr and acoustic/electric drummer Kenny Wollesen, all the stimulus they need for further compose and fearlessly reinvent. With each offering, and certainly with The Hard Way and its rich electro-acoustic groove canvas, Steven and crew reveal a modernizing impulse, but also an equally strong foundation in the roots of jazz and American song. Funky, bluesy, with a tattered dissonance conjured up by Krauss Throaty saxophone tone, the distinctive wail of Steven's rare horn, and the swagger of Scherr and Wollesen's rhythm section grind, Sexmob continues to chart new paths in 21st-century creative music. In this episode host Michael Shields and Steven Bernstein talk about Sexmob's new direction sonically found on The Hard Way while exploring the production process behind this captivating work of art. They converse on producer Scott Hard's influence on the album, the unique art house label that The Hard Way was released on called Corbett vs. Dempsey, and the four albums Steven recently released with The Millennial Territory Orchestra. They even discuss Sexmob's forthcoming tour with Laurie Anderson, the many “gifts” Steven received in his career from renowned producer Hal Willner, and so much more. Hosted on Acast. Peloton has had a turbulent couple of years. After the ups and downs of the pandemic economy came a rash of bad press spurned by a series of tragic product accidents. The resulting stock dips and executive shake-ups put the fitness tech company's future in flux. But now, Peloton is trying something new. Or at least new-ish. The Peloton Guide is a device with a camera that sits on your TV and monitors your workout. (Just don't call it a Kinect.) It's far more modest than Peloton's large, fancy stationary bikes and treadmills, and something Peloton hopes will lure in more subscribers. Still, it's another bet on our continued interest in at-home workouts—a market that may not be as robust as Peloton hoped it was. This week on Gadget Lab, WIRED executive editor Brian Barrett joins us for a conversation about Peloton's newest product and the company's future. Show Notes:  Read Lauren's story about the new Peloton Guide. Here's Adrienne So's review of the Guide. Recommendations:  Brian recommends the novel Middlemarch by George Eliot. John Lurie catches up with Kyle Meredith to talk about Season 2 of Painting with John, his HBO series that finds the musician, painter, actor, director, and producer creating his watercolor masterpieces while giving us all insight into his life, philosophies, and often-bizarre adventures. The Lounge Lizards co-founder takes us inside the recurring sketch called "Cowboy Beckett" that weaves throughout this new season and how it took inspiration from Ennio Morricone. He tells us why he gravitated toward watercolors, and how he comes up with the titles of his paintings, which sometimes tell complete stories themselves. Lurie also discusses the joys and importance of swearing, why he portrays himself as a wolf in his work, and a bit of the backstory behind some of the original music featured in this new season. Jim Jarmusch's Neo-noir-beatnik-comedy is a favorite film of Dennis's, and a staple of the 1980s indie film scene, so it's time for Mary to finally sit down and watch. Silly, stylized, and warm, "sad and beautiful" as one character says, it stars Tom Waits, John Lurie, and Roberto Benigni as three men stuck in a Louisiana jail for accidental crimes who try to find a way to live with each other.

Initially making his mark as the bandleader for downtown New York group, The Lounge Lizards, he quickly went on to establish himself as an actor in several films. He created and starred in the enigmatic, must-see TV show FISHING WITH JOHN and the more recent PAINTING WITH JOHN. He's toured the world, composed several film scores, and has even done some modeling. And all along, he's also managed to keep up a serious painting practice. Is there anything this man can't do? On this edition of ST, we offer an another installment in the Museum Confidential podcast series, which is a co-production of Philbrook Museum of Art and Public Radio Tulsa. This time out, MC connects with the legendary musician, painter, actor, and director, John Lurie, who might be best known as a co-founder of the Lounge Lizards, the jazz/avant/indie band that thrived on the 1980s "downtown scene" in NYC. He's also acted in many films, including "Stranger than Paradise" and "Down by Law," and has composed and/or performed music for nearly two dozen TV and film works over the years. Since 2000, Lurie has been dealing with chronic Lyme disease; in this time, he has also focused more and more on his painting. And thus his well-regarded -- and typically off-the-wall -- television series, "Painting with John," debuted on HBO in early 2021. (A second season of "Painting with John" is now in the works.) Moreover, Lurie's memoir, "The History of Bones," was published by Penguin Random House a couple of months ago. He chats with MC about all of the above -- and more.

We've been waiting for this one for a loooooong time. Get Shorty is one of our favorites. This movie is absolutely dripping with style, thanks to a soundtrack by John Lurie, Booker T and the MG's and Us3. It is anchored by a comeback performance from John Travolta, but Danny Devito steals the show as the ultimate Hollywood turd, Martin Weir. I dare you to watch this movie and not fall madly in love with Rene Russo as a B-movie bombshell, Dennis Farina as the ultimate C-level Miami gangster, Gene Hackman as a D-level, B-movie director, and Delroy Lindo as a D-level gangster trying to be a C-level, B-movie producer. We spend most of the pod thoroughly fellating this wonderful film. The rest of the time, we are… well we fellate the film the whole time. I gotta admit, we were somewhat disappointed with the cast that we ended up with. It's not bad, but it's so hard to replicate the lightning in the bottle that this movie caught. We have some interesting picks, but ultimately we felt like we could do better. Maybe we shouldn't have recast this movie because we were too close to it. Like how a doctor is not allowed to operate on their own family members. As a result of this, we want to hear what you have to think! We got a few good ones, but we could use your help rounding out the rest of the cast. Give us your picks on twitter @recastingpod, or email us at recastingpod@gmail.com. Leaving us a 5 star rating on iTunes, or telling some friends really helps us grow the podcast, but more importantly, PLAY THE GAME! Spread the recasting vibes and find a fun way to tell all of your friends (or family, in my case) just how wrong they are. Good times are had by all.

Eventually moving to New York, Arto formed the important no wave band DNA in the 1970s, and since then has been part of so many amazing bands and made so much great music that it's tough to discuss it all.
