The web started off weird, and there’s a wonderful and concerted effort to ensure that, at least parts of it, stay that way. Heroku designer Charlie Gleason and lead strategist Stephen Barlow dive into their experiences working on side projects—small, silly, funny, and emotive vignettes on the web—that span random Arrested Development episode selectors, Kanye West browser-based mini games, collaborative art projects, and everything in between. Learn how to get involved with your own community of makers, why it’s more important to have fun than it is to try and get internet famous, and some things to look out for when working with others. So, put away the kanban board, get inspired, and keep the internet weird with a side project of your own. In 1873 a Methodist missionary in New York City heard rumors of a little girl who was kept locked in a tenement and regularly whipped. She uncovered a shocking case of neglect and abuse that made headlines around the world. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell how one girl's ordeal led to a new era in child welfare. We'll also outsource Harry Potter and puzzle over Wayne Gretzky's accomplishments. Intro: By a 1976 resolution, George Washington forever outranks every other officer in the U.S. Army. This week on Patreon we started our new series of bonus content, The Secret Life of the American Computer! The computer-generated script is written by Sam in more or less the same way as the Botnik script for our Just Say Me episode, but with two changes: 1) some of the shorter/simpler lines are just written normally by Sam because this process takes forever otherwise, and more importantly 2) there is now fun narration written by Sam and not Botnik, describing the scenes as they play out! One episode in and the story is already getting extremely weird. If you want to hear more, all episodes will be on our Patreon and can be unlocked for as low as $1 a month!

Hey, teens! Jordan is still in Japan but we’ve thought of a way to fill the gap he created by funny deleting his “Just Say Me” audio: we’ve fed the script of that Secret Life episode into Botnik Voicebox, an app that takes a text file and creates a predictive text keyboard, and with it we can create a script for a dramatic reading of what you all missed! Sam is joined by friends of the show Stephanie, Matt, and Argyle, and we’re all going to learn about motorcycles. In this weeks episode John and Adam get all random again with a hodgepodge of topics. We begin talking about filmmaker Craig Baldwin's avant-garde cinema, specifically Tribulation 99 and Mock-Up on Mu. Using archival footage from the early pulp serials, clips from industrial films, and other found footage, Baldwin creates a collage of paranoia and conspiracy that's been dubbed as, "an X-Ray of a rabid slacker's seething brain." Next up... has Andy Kaufman reincarnated as a hilarious and brilliant 16 year-old girl? ("Pupinia Stewart", if you're listening, drop us a line!) Botnik! Fun with AI for the whole family! The absurd, genius, and strange things made with augmented content creation. And speaking of bots, were those darn Russkies behind that whole #ReleaseTheMemo meme? I saw a Bigfoot... lawsuit! A quick crypto update, and finally... QAnon & the Power of Myth. John gives his mile-high sociological analysis on what might be going on with all the chaos, confusion and, yes, certainty behind the whole Q phenomenon. Both doubters and Qool-Aide drinkers should take note, as there just might be something much bigger going on than meets the All-Seeing Eye. ;-)

In a complete departure from our usual approach, we spend this episode composing and reading text using Botnik's predictive text generators: the system used to write Harry Potter and the Portrait of What Looked Like a Large Pile of Ash. We give that a once over, and then play around with our own, including a Nicki Minaj song, Seinfeld beat poetry, and some crossover fic. This episode is a bit o' knickers.
