I met Igal Hecht, an independent Canadian-Israeli documentary filmmaker, in late September in Toronto. We sat on the patio of one of the many locations of Israeli-owned Landwer Cafe, and spoke about his very intense film, The Killing Roads. It was a glorious early fall day, strong sun, perfect temperature, too many bees. But we were elsewhere in our conversation, talking about the roads of southern Israel on October 7, 2023. You will find the link to Igal Hecht's film – which is just under two hours – in the podcast notes. We have also included some photographs provided by Hecht. Shortly after returning to my new home in southern Israel - and after October 7, 2024 had passed - Igal and I connected online to record this interview. I encourage you to listen to our exchange before watching the film. It provides important background and context. This. In the podcast notes to that episode we have included various video clips from the grassroots commemoration ceremony organized in Tel Aviv's HaYarkon Park on the evening of October 7, 2024. One clip is of Israeli music star, Ivri Lider, singing an absolutely beautiful song that he wrote that just breaks the heart. He memorializes the tragic story of Yuval Tabelsi, who was trapped in a car on 232, with her husband and friends. All but Yuval were massacred. She “played” dead in the car and miraculously escaped murder. Hers is one of so many stories that we will never know, because of what happened that day on the killing roads.* Clip of Israeli music legend, Ivri Lider, singing "I Had a Chance to Love", inspired by Yuval's love story, so tragically cut short. His work has been featured on prominent platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC, Documentary Channel, CBC, YES-TV in both Israel and Canada, HBO Europe, Vice TV, and more, earning him national and international recognition. Editor's Fix: In the podcast I refer to 97 hostages. Some media refer to 97. That number includes those captured on October 7. When 101 is used… it includes four hostages held by Hamas since 2014.It is significant that the one year mark of what was perhaps modern Israel's darkest day falls between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. This ten-day period, known as the Days of Awe, is a time when Jewish people are meant to reflect on the past year. To take stock of their inner life, unsparingly. And if they have wronged someone they are expected to seek forgiveness, but only if they do so with humility. Unreservedly. Whether one “believes” or not, this coincidental timing is profound. On Monday, October 7, I woke up very early. at 6:30 am, just one minute later than the beginning of the horrific attack of that Black Sabbath, one year ago. We had dreaded this day for so long. And here it was. I set out in late morning for the site of the Nova Music Festival. To get there I drive along Road 232, which was an alley of death one year ago. At the site, I spoke with bereaved family members, among them Shlomo and Rita Krief. They lost their 17-year-old son, Shahaf, at nearby Zikim Beach, one year ago. As often happens in Israel, so many strangers came together to comfort Shlomo and Rita, who were inconsolable. It was a spontaneous gathering and I learned so much and felt so deeply. This vignette is a sampling of how immeasurably October 7 impacted this country and, I expect, will remain with us for decades. Perhaps centuries. The way in which families have been treated by the current government has stoked anger and bitterness, regrettably. In so saying I am acting as the conduit for the bereaved. It is something that I heard and was repeated all over Israel last Monday. This is not an issue of partisan politics. Not right or left. This is about abandonment. Not fulfilling one's duty. That is how so many feel today. And that was very evident in the backstory - which we tell - and the main event commemorating October 7. The Bereaved Families Memorial Ceremony. It was held on Monday night at Yarkon Park in Tel Aviv. Survivors, bereaved, artists, singers. Two thousand people convened for this ceremony that was organized by the brother of a hostage who had been killed in error by the IDF. It was an extraordinary event, televised live in Israel. Not a single government representative or official was included or invited. We tell you why.In this podcast, I take you on the journey I went on last Monday. It has overpowered me all week. And it is so appropriate to share on this day, just before Kol Nidre, Erev Yom Kippur. The Day of Atonement. You will hear direct, raw testimony. Mournful but hopeful song. Real. Raw. In the moment. If you want to understand the mood in Israel today, I urge you to watch the ceremony in full. Or dip into the clips we have provided, below. Podcast Notes:* Bereaved Families Memorial Ceremony at Hayarkon Park, Tel Aviv, Monday, October 7, 2024:* Clip from full ceremony of an interview with Yuval Tabelsi giving testimony about her experience at the Nova Festival one year earlier and how she is coping with the loss of her husband. As there are no English subtitles I have provided a quick translation, following: The clip opens with Yuval at the dumpsite near the Nova Festival where all the incinerated cars have been taken. She says it is her first time there and she is looking for their car. She very much wants to find the car - something that was theirs at their last moments together. She speaks about how well-suited and happy they were together and moves into a recounting of their final moments. They were trapped at an intersection. He told her to fold in on herself and hide as much as possible. He shouted “Shema Yisrael,” and said he hoped they come through this. She says she believes that Mor understood he would die there. She heard only gunshots, saw her husband dead. And she and her friends smeared Mor's blood on themselves so that if the terrorists come by the car they will think that they are dead. They heard horrible sounds; including a woman being raped. In her life, she says, she has never heard such screams for help. She said - “Mor - I don't know where you are now. But if I am going to die - at least not like this.” Every time she visits Mor's grave, she says……she sings to him Ivri Lider's song, “I Had a Chance to Love.” :* Clip of Israeli music legend, Ivri Lider, singing "I Had a Chance to Love", inspired by Yuval's love story, so tragically cut short. Ivri is joined on stage towards the end of the performance by Yuval. Lihi Lapid is a celebrated photojournalist, columnist and best-selling author - of children's books, cookbooks and award-winning novels. She's also married to Yair Lapid, the former Israeli Prime Minister and current Leader of the Opposition. In 2021 Lihi published Zarot, a sweeping tale that explores a complicated mother-daughter relationship, the tolls of immigration and the reality of marginalized groups within Israeli society. When it came out, it received glowing praise, especially from the notoriously harsh critics at Haaretz who called the novel, “a wonderful work written with restraint and wisdom.” And this spring, three years later and in what is an entirely different world, the English translation - On Her Own - was published by HarperCollins. We sat down to talk about October 7th, feminism, special needs, and what it's like to have a major work of fiction - written by the former Prime Minister's wife - come out in the middle of a war.The end song is Hi Shketa ("Hi Quiet One") by Ivri Lider.Photograph by Jennifer Bukovza, courtesy of Lihi Lapid. The war has brought many new people into the limelight: For nearly three months we've been hearing countless stories of casualties, hostages, survivors and family members, many of whom have entered our hearts and never left. In some cases we feel like we've gotten to know these unsung heroes personally. One of the first big stories of the war, in that initial crazy week after October 7th, was that of 30-year-old Sagi Golan from Herzliya - a decorated officer in an anti-terrorism unit, who was killed in action in Be'eri in the early hours of October 8th. His story made headlines because Sagi was supposed to have married his partner, Omer Ohana, two weeks later, and his death brought to the fore - once again - the matter of the army and LGBTQ rights. Though the IDF has recognized same-sex partners of fallen soldiers as being eligible for full financial and emotional support since the mid-1990s, the matter had never been enshrined in law. So in the weeks after Sagi's death, Omer led a successful campaign to legally secure the rights of same-sex and common law partners of fallen soldiers. The end song is Zachiti Le'ehov ("I Won The Privilege to Love") by Ivri Lider. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Daddy Squared: The Gay Dads Podcast looks at gay rights and fatherhood options in Israel. We talked with Israeli pop star and gay dad Ivri Lider to get a taste of what it's like being a gay dad in Israel, and researched options for Israeli gay men who want to become dads. Parenting is engraved in Israeli culture. In this episode of Daddy Squared we give a taste of gay fatherhood in Israel as well as explore options for gay men to become dads. "In Israel these days it's really very common for gay men to have kids," singer Ivri Lider tells Daddy Squared, "it's pretty amazing what happens in Tel Aviv. In the last 10 years it became the obvious thing, like the normal obvious thing for gay couples to have kids. In Israel, having kids is something that is very much intrenched in society and it's, like, important. Having kids is like the most important thing you can do with your life." Despite the normality of gays with kids in Israel, and the popularity of surrogacy among gay Israelis, surrogacy is still illegal in the country, and gay men are forced to have kids abroad. "It is something that we really are fighting for these days," Lider says, "because right now it's a discriminating law. If you're a straight couple you can do surrogacy in Israel and also if you're a woman you can do surrogacy in Israel, but if you are a man you can't. It's kinda obvious that it's more of an anti-gay law because there's not a lot of straight men who go through surrogacy alone. We definitely see it as something discriminating against gay men, but the Israeli Supreme Court ruled last year that it should be changed. So it's this moment in time when we're waiting to see what's gonna happen with that." Lider, had his son, Alby, through surrogacy in the U.S. in 2019. "It's such an amazing thing," he says about parenthood, "suddenly to having a little kid and watching the world through his eyes, learning about the world with him and being able to teach him --it's just incredible." "It took time for me to decide that I'm doing it and how I'm doing it. At the beginning I was in a long relationship and I was thinking I would be doing it in a relationship, and then we broke up--partially because of that, because he wasn't ready, and then I was a long for a while, thinking I would do joint parenting, and I met with a few girls and then after a while I was feeling that this is not really for me, I was feeling that I'll never feel ready to do it with a woman who's not my wife, and I felt in a kind of deep psychological way for me to not commit enough. So I thought, 'ok, you're going to commit,' and I was still single when I started the process." "And the most amazing thing is that I met Yonatan, my boyfriend, right after I started. So I started the process as a single man but eventually when Alby was born we were already in a relationship. Yonatan will tell you that on the first date we were sitting at my house and talking and having wine, and I was like, 'yeah, I'm having a kid.'" Surrogacy for Gay Men in Israel Surrogacy is illegal for single men and gay couples in Israel, therefore, gay men travel abroad, mostly to the U.S. and Canada, for their journey. Joint Parenthood (Co-Parenting) for Gay Men in Israel "It's very common to do it with someone you know for many years," Ivri Lider says. "Like, a lot of my friends will tell you, 'oh we were friends in high school,' or we know this woman for 20 years and now we're going to have a kid together.' In a very Israeli fashion it's very family-like, a close relationship." Our Guest: Ivri Lider Ivri Lider is an Israeli musician, pop star, icon. May 2021 was an interesting month in Israel, full of highs and lows. It began with a general feeling of hope, with most Coronavirus restrictions lifted and life getting back to normal. However, the celebratory mood quickly turned to one of fear, with 4,000 rockets raining down on Israeli cities. Israelis left the streets once again and huddled in bomb shelters. Once that was over, frustration...as antisemitism and anti-Zionism began to emerge around the world. Much of the music you'll hear this week reflects many of those emotions, punctuated by new songs from Ivri Lider, Noa Kirel and Omer Adam, Marina Maximillian and others. “People assume artists are living their lives as free spirits, but I’m working harder than most of the people I know.” Loren started his music career at his teenage years when he started playing the guitar and than served in IDF’s orchestra. After the army, he went to pursue his music career in New York as a singer songwriter and got to work with famous musicians such as Steve Jordan and more. Four years later he came back to Israel and started producing and writing songs for the most well known artists in the country, including: Eyal Golan, Moshe Peretz, Ivri Lider, Shlomi Shabat, Rita and more. In our conversation he talks about the process of realizing music is his full time commitment, probably for the rest of his life. We talk about making a living from music, about working hard for leading in your field and about focusing on our passions. And… there is a surprise in the end. This is an episode for people who thought art could only be pursued as a hobby.

Hey, this is my cover to the song "Nisim" By Ivri Lider. Translations: English Listen, Nisim*, There is going to be a war soon we'll get far. Listen, Nisim, There is going to be a war, weeping is affected from laughter as well. don't push to the corner a weird feeling, concentrate please, she's getting closer, to ask a question, try not to laugh as a lunatic, with a stuck smile, come, give me a kiss. Get addicted, try to say it's missing, that you deserve more from the beauty that you have no ability to do this. Get addicted to michal's* words, says it's a pity that the water dosen't look like the sky, at all. Look, Nisim, It's all by accident, Two people will wait for you, Listen, Nisim, There will fighting, but we will win. don't push to the corner a weird feeling, please concentrate, a question comes, maybe the enemy is a friend, with a stuck fist, asking for a kiss.
