In this week's episode, Jennifer welcomes Jon Hecht, a former Massachusetts State Representative and leading advocate for democracy reform. Jon has spent years at the State House gaining firsthand insight into the legislative process and now serves as a key member of the Coalition to Reform Our Legislature. Despite political differences, his bipartisan work through the Legislative Efficiency and Accountability Project (LEAP) and the legislative stipend reform movement has united individuals across the political spectrum who are dedicated to increasing transparency and accountability in state government. This episode explores the controversial failure of the Massachusetts legislature to allow a citizen-led stipend reform question on the ballot, exposing a process that critics claim is riddled with undemocratic maneuvers and a lack of transparency. The conversation delves into the legislature’s alleged misuse of procedural loopholes, including a rare advisory opinion from the Supreme Judicial Court, to block popular reform efforts. Jennifer and Jon highlight the enormous bipartisan volunteer effort that gathered over 95,000 signatures, discuss the impact of legislative stipends on power dynamics and public trust, and question the accountability of leadership bonuses. The discussion challenges entrenched legislative culture, addresses frustration with dismissive attitudes toward voters, and calls out the resistance to openness and reform on Beacon Hill. "We have this crazy system in Massachusetts where our legislators get a large part of their pay from another legislator." ~Jon Hecht This week on Political Contessa: The legislative stipend reform ballot question and the bipartisan coalition behind it The rare procedural tactics used by the Massachusetts legislature to block reform efforts The overwhelming public support, demonstrated by 95,000 gathered signatures Claims of legislative stipends creating conflicts between serving leadership and serving constituents Critique of dismissive attitudes from Massachusetts legislators toward voter concerns The role of legislative bonuses and travel stipends in state government Efforts to keep the democracy reform movement alive through public engagement and future ballot initiatives Calls for voters to directly ask their representatives about stipend reform and legislative accountability Connect with Jon Hecht and the Coalition to Reform Our Legislature: Stipend Reform Website:com/donate Resources Mentioned: The Legislative Efficiency and Accountability Project (LEAP) Information about signing up for volunteering and donation opportunities available atcom See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Joined on episode 356 by firefighter/paramedic and founder of VEST First Responder LLC, the one and only Jake Hecht!!!! Tuesday, May 26th8 PM CSTFrom high school history teacher to pro MMA fighter (3× UFC veteran) and now firefighter, Jake turned a violent patient encounter into a mission, dedicating his career to protecting those who protect others. As a former Army Combatives Instructor and former Lead Defensive Tactics Instructor for the Columbia, Missouri Police Department, Jake has now trained more than 3,000 firefighters and EMS providers across 10 states on practical, field-tested workplace violence survival. On this episode we're digging into: How VEST was born from real calls and why there's virtually no standardized training for violent patient encounters in fire/EMS . Why most de-escalation talk is empty buzzwords and exactly where the line is before physical options kick in. Common admin objections and the culture that treats getting assaulted as “part of the job”.We will also discuss the reporting platform that Jake built to stop sweeping these incidents under the rug - www.firstresponderviolence.com Of coure, we can always count on the live audience to bring the heat with their questions. It is what continues to make the Scrap the absolute best. We go wherever the conversation takes us. Episode 356 made possible by our incredible sponsors: SnapTite Hose & FireStation Furniture
In this episode, JoDee and Susan talk to author Glenna Hecht about an issue that impacts more employees than many leaders realize: caregiving. Topics include: The statistics on caregivers in the workplace Caregiver-friendly policies The hidden impact of caregiving in the workplace and why many employers don't see it How caregiving changes an employee's focus, identity, and relationship with work What managers can do when an employee's performance suddenly shifts Practical ways employers can support employees balancing work and caregiving In this episode's listener question, we're asked how to help aging workers who don't want to leave but aren't keeping up with younger coworkers retire with dignity. In the news, nearly two thirds of workers say they do not feel financially secure in their current role.
Lon Hecht, CEO of Care2U, has designed an innovative model of providing in-home high-acuity care as an alternative to emergency room visits or hospitalizations. The process includes sending a clinician to the home within 2-4 hours, with extensive mobile medical equipment, and physician support via telehealth. Benefits include better patient recovery outcomes, significant cost savings for patients and payers, and prevention of costly hospital readmissions. Lon explains, "My company, Care2U, and I are bringing high acuity care into the home. So think of it as kind of a replacement for ER-level care or hospitalization. When you think of home care, that's typically skilled or unskilled care. So it could be someone coming in to help you with daily living needs, or it could be some kind of skilled nursing. What we do is very different. We're sending a clinician into the home. Typically, within two to four hours, they bring in a physician via concurrent telehealth and treat true high-acuity needs. Once again, things that you would typically see in the ER in the hospital. So that's how it's different. And what's great about it is it really allows you to stay in your home, be around your loved ones, which is fantastic. And the cost is a fraction of what you would pay for ER or hospital-based care." "There's a lot of data out there that shows people heal better at home. When you're in a hospital, there are all kinds of things going on. You're around plenty of infection. You're up all night. It's very chaotic for folks. Being able to be at home with their loved ones, pets, and others, and move freely throughout the home, really makes a difference in their recovery. So, it's been published as being incredibly positive for the care of patients." #Care2U #HospitalAtHome #ERAtHome #CareAtHome #HealingAtHome #EmpoweredPatient #DigitalHealth #Telehealth #VirtualCare #HealthTech #ValueBasedCare #PopulationHealth #AgingInPlace #ManagedCare #ValueBasedCare #Readmissions #Caregivers #OlderAdults #Geriatric #Elderly#HealthcareInnovation #PatientCare #PatientExperience #HealthcareDelivery #MedicalInnovation #HealthcareCosts #PatientOutcomes care2U.com Download the transcript here

Running Backs: Mike Washington Jr. and Jeremiah Love dominate both team value and actual value metrics, but Love carries a 20-point overvaluation gap — and zero-star Navy product Eli Heidenreich emerges as the most undervalued back, a WR/RB hybrid with elite PFF grades and a compelling character profile Wide Receivers: Jeff Caldwell is in a class by himself at 99.9th percentile across the board, while Colby Young — the big-bodied Georgia X-receiver — shows up as undervalued despite significant off-field concerns that will complicate his draft stock Tight Ends: A position loaded with overrated combine performers; Miles Kitzelman out of Tennessee stands out as the most undervalued, though his modest production and modest PFF blocking grades raise legitimate questions Offensive Line: Human skyscraper Mark Bell (6'9", 346 lbs) out of Miami is the most underrated tackle in the class, while Kansas State's Sam Hecht — zero sacks allowed in 850 career pass-blocking reps — may be the steal of the entire offensive line group Don't sleep on these prospects, Pac Nation. Unmasked was a live event discussing the roles we learned to play just to feel safe. We spoke about why we create masks to belong, to avoid rejection, to survive. At one point they protected us. At some point they started shrinking us. We explored how masks help us function but also keep us disconnected from our real selves. The goal isn't to become loud it's to become aligned. You remove the mask in small, honest moments, not dramatic declarations. Freedom begins the second you stop performing and start telling the truth.
In honor of National Caregivers Day on Friday the 20th, CJ welcomes author, speaker, and leadership consultant Glenna Hecht for a deeply human conversation about caregiving, presence, and active listening. After a distinguished career in Human Resources with organizations like Starbucks and Walt Disney World, Glenna faced a challenge she could not fix—her mother's dementia. What began as frustration and attempts to control the uncontrollable became a profound shift: if she could not cure it, she could meet it with curiosity, compassion, and play.Out of that surrender came a simple but powerful question: “How old are you today?” That question opened doors to memory, imagination, and connection, ultimately becoming the heart of her memoir, How Old Are You Today? In this episode, Glenna shares why caregivers are everyday heroes, why they deserve more grace, and how listening—not correcting—can transform the relationship. If they believe it, don't bust the myth. Be willing to enter their world. If you are navigating dementia or Alzheimer's with someone you love, this conversation offers a way forward—not by resisting what is, but by going with it. You can learn how to play Glenna's game and create more meaningful moments with your loved one by purchasing her book on Amazon or wherever books are sold.Want to learn more about CJ Miller? Cassia van der Hoof Holstein writes about her cousin Chris, "captain of the cousins" in a family where cousin love means always having a place to go, advice in any time zone, and guides through every storm. She reflects on planning a Passover feast with Chris in Hawaii, their endless conversations about everything and nothing, and how the phrase "blood is thicker than water" doesn't quite capture it—it's not just blood, it's love. Love through a hundred seders, a million text messages, sharing apartments and childcare and sometimes organs. It's about what home means, what gets transmitted and transmuted across generations, and the ocean of cousin love that sustained them both.
