Part II: Government subverts democracy with its illegal firing of Shin Bet Chief. In this podcast episode, I speak with Amir Tibon, diplomatic correspondent with Ha'aretz newspaper, author, and member of kibbutz Nahal Oz. A survivor of October 7, Amir and his family were rescued that day by his father, retired IDF General Noam Tibon. In his superb book, Gates of Gaza, Amir tells the story of that surreal day, weaving in historical context so that readers develop a much deeper understanding of the colossal failure of October 7. In this podcast he is the yin to Simcha Rothman's yang, explaining how the opposition to the government sees the firing of Ronen Bar and the extreme consequences for Israeli democracy should any ruling by the Israeli Supreme Court not be followed, as threatened by some government members. Both Rothman and Tibon very powerfully articulate their perspective and lay out for you, the listener, this epic conflict roiling Israeli society today.State of Tel Aviv is a reader-supported publication. Part I: Can the government fire the head of Shin Bet? You bet! Says Simcha RothmanApologies for the gap in podcast posts, but this coming week your cup will runneth over. Lots of great stuff coming your way. And we begin with this fiery discussion with Religious Zionist MK Simcha Rothman. I spoke to him on Sunday, April 6, just after the government had fired Shin Bet Head Ronen Bar and two days before the appeal of his firing was being heard in the Israeli Supreme Court. Rothman sees this latest clash as yet another manifestation of the leftist deep state undermining the will of the people, as expressed by the democratically elected government. Any criticism of the termination of Ronen Bar is manufactured and disingenuous rage, in his view. Listen and decide. We get into the weeds on the recent revival of judicial reform efforts and the dramatic fallout from the firing of Ronen Bar and also discuss his position regarding the renewed fighting in Gaza and the issue of negotiating for the return of the hostages languishing in Hamas hell. Simcha is fascinating and a very influential political player in Israel. It is important to listen carefully. In a few hours we will post the second part of this podcast—in which I discuss the same issues with Amir Tibon, a writer and journalist who sees things very differently from Simcha Rothman. I thought it important to present both sides. I'd love to hear your feedback.State of Tel Aviv is a reader-supported publication. On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, most tariff coverage reflects the views of Washington, D.C., or New York, overlooking fishermen, ranchers, and farmers who applaud the tariffs—a clear sign of the media's government and urban bias. Trump's talent as a dealmaker is perpetually underestimated. Additionally, it's fortunate that four Supreme Court justices remain steadfast. No delegate or ratifier of the Constitution would have endorsed a document allowing a single judge, like Judge Boasberg, to wield power in such a manner. Also, the Israeli Supreme Court decided to freeze the firing of Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar until further notice. This court is disregarding the sovereignty of the people, using Stalinist tactics to undermine the elected Prime Minister, and being supported by Marxist-Islamist protesters and a radical media, all while posing as justices. This is a global embarrassment. Later, Retired Police Lieutenant Douglas Deaton calls in to explain that he warned Texas officials about the East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) establishing a Sharia-compliant "mega-city" near Dallas. His testimony during a Collin County Commissioners Court hearing exposed EPIC's ties to Sharia advocacy, prompting Texas Governor Greg Abbott to order state investigations, including a Texas Rangers criminal probe. Afterward, Iran's fanatical fundamentalist Islamists have threatened our country with death again and again. Those who appease Iran, smear those who are clearheaded about Iran, and lie to the American people about what is truly at stake are the worst kind of demagogues -- mouthpieces for an enemy that has declared its intentions. Iran's leaders are the warmongers and those who lie for them are warmongers as well. Finally, Douglas Murray calls in to discuss his new book: On Democracies and Death Cults: Israel and the Future of Civilization. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Each week, it seems, the stakes get higher. Last week, PM Netanyahu strode into very dangerous territory. In addition to resuming the war with Hamas, his government took the rather bold steps of firing the Internal Security Service Head, Ronen Bar, as well as Attorney General Gali Baharav Miara. Never before has a government fired a Shin Bet boss. And this, in the midst of unprecedented security threats—externally. And then there's the fact that these acts were brought to the Israeli Supreme Court for an emergency hearing. And the Court held that the government was acting outside the law in firing Ronen Bar in such haste and that it must adhere to threshold legal standards and procedures. That, of course, was met with derision by the PM and several of his senior cabinet colleagues. For them, this was yet another example of the constant subversion engaged in by the entrenched Leftist deep state; a label they slap on anyone or interest that takes issue with their policies and execution of same. Yes. They really said that. Many times. On Sunday. This is standard for the government coalition. So. Here we are. With the government leadership vowing to give the Supreme Court the middle finger. And just do what they deem appropriate. And that has set off alarm in Israel. It's all too much and too close to the bone. As always. Conricus and I get into the detail, and yes, we are both deeply concerned. As are 63% of Israelis. A recent poll indicated they worried about the future of the country as a democracy.Below is a link to our YouTube version of the podcast. The American presidential debate was a moment of truth – or lack thereof – for the press. It also has consequences for Israel and the Middle East. Mike and Gadi discuss. This week also saw an Israeli Supreme Court decision ordering the draft of all ultra-orthodox men. The decision is threatening the stability of Netanyahu's coalition. Mike and Gadi explain why this has become such a contested issue, and how religion, nationalism and progressivism define what Left and Right mean in Israel today. Then there is also a uniquely dumb take on the news. Join us and stay updated about Israel and its war.

Ready or not, tomorrow is debate day. And both President Joe Biden, 81, and former President Donald Trump, 78, are under a lot of pressure to show they're fit for re-election. While Biden hunkers down at Camp David to prepare, Trump has been getting an assist from his supporters sharing selectively edited "cheap fake" videos that pray on voter concerns over Biden's age. AP correspondent Charles de Ledesma reports Israel's army draft laws are changing.
Is now the time for Israeli decision-makers to begin serious internal deliberations and planning for the “day after” in Gaza? According to Nadav Eyal in his column last Friday in Yediot, over 95% of Hamas rockets are gone, Hamas's smuggling routes have been closed, and its munitions production capacity is zero. Is progress in defeating Hamas appears much better than one would think from reading popular press accounts? It's against that backdrop that we've learned of a 28-page document -- this is not publica -- and is circulating among Israeli military leaders and war strategy decision-makers within the government. Some we spoke to suggested that this document is being treated as the basis for ‘day after' planning in the government. It's called: "From a murderous regime to a moderate society: the transformation and rehabilitation of Gaza after Hamas". The researchers are Prof. Danny Auerbach, a military historian; Prof. Neta Barak-Koran, a law professor who works on conflict resolution; Dr. Nati Palmer who works on intelligence about Hamas and Hezbollah; and Dr. Harel Horev, an expert on Palestinian society. To help us understand these recommendations, we are joined today by one of its authors, Prof. Netta Barak-Corren, who is a legal scholar with degrees from the Hebrew University (where she is a professor). She clerked for the Chief Justice of the Israeli Supreme Court, and then pursued doctoral studies at Harvard, graduating in 2016. She currently is on leave from Hebrew University, while she's visiting faculty at Princeton. She's previously taught at University of Pennsylvania and University of Chicago.
On this edition of Parallax Views, the University of Maryland's Prof. Shay Hazkani, a former Israeli journalist turned historian, joins the show to discuss the major themes of his book Dear Palestine: A Social History of the 1948 War and documentary The Soldier's Opinion in light of the Gaza War, settler violence in the West Bank, and the October 7th Hamas attack. Prof. Hazkani provides a fresh, illuminating perspective on the 1948 Arab-Israeli War that contributes a great deal to discussion of Israel/Palestine. Specifically, he takes the approach of looking at how non-elites, especially soldiers, viewed/perceived the war compared to elites on both the Israeli and Arab sides of the conflict. We'll delve deep into this as well as Prof. Hazkani's battles with the Israeli Supreme Court over the fight to declassify documents in Israel's archives; how Prof. Hazkani's work overlaps with that of the Israeli New Historians like Benny Morris, Avi Shlaim, and Ilan Pappe (as well as how it differs from those works); propaganda and the mythologies of war (and how said propaganda and myths are generated); some of the myths that Prof. Hazkoni specifically busts in the book; the damage books like Joan Peters' From Time Immemorial have caused to properly understanding Israel/Palestine; the Arab Liberation Army; how then-recent American Jewish immigrants perceived events unfolding at the time compared to Jews who had immigrated prior; and much, much more. And yes, we will discuss all of this within the context of the current Gaza War and violence in the West Bank. Prof. Hazkoni will delve into his fears about what is transpiring currently, especially with regards to messianic right-wing elements in Israeli society like the Religious Zionists, as well as how the parallels between 1948 and today. All that and more on this must-listen edition of Parallax Views!

How should we think about violent accounts in the Bible? Why did Gandhi urge the Jews to turn a blind eye to anti-Semitism during World War II? What is the reality behind buzz-words like asymmetric warfare and collective punishment that come up so often when discussing events in Gaza? What role should global opinion and the hostage crisis play in Israeli strategy? Is there a moral imperative to win? What is going on with the Israeli Supreme Court? This discussion delves into the Israeli political system, highlighting the significant role and influence of the Supreme Court. The speakers touch on various topics including the distinction between laws and 'basic laws' in Israel, which are somewhat equivalent to a constitution. A key point of the discussion is the power of the Supreme Court to strike down these 'basic laws', a first in Israeli history, leading to the crisis of the judicial reform that took up headlines prior to the war. The hosts also examine how this development impacts the democratic process and the balance of judicial, legislative, and executive powers. Relevant examples such as laws related to ultra-Orthodox military service and illegal immigration highlight the controversy about the Supreme Court's decisions. The conversation concludes with reflections on the difficulties of reforming the system and avoiding a constitutional crisis. The Israeli Supreme Court—in the middle of the war in Gaza—handed down a decision that amounts to a kind of death blow to Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu's judicial reform project. Before October 7, judicial overhaul was all that anybody was talking about in Israeli politics—you know, a five-part legislative plan to assert parliamentary control over the judiciary and reduce Israel's checks and balances into a more majoritarian system. Only one part of it passed, and the Supreme Court has now struck it down in a decision that sharply divided the court on some questions and reflected significant unity on others. To discuss the 700-page ruling, we brought back our Israeli judicial overhaul team: Yuval Shany of Hebrew University and Amichai Cohen of Ono Academic College. Lawfare Editor-in-Chief Benjamin Wittes spoke with them about what the court did and what the court didn't do, about their doing it in the middle of a war and whether that was truly necessary, and about where the judicial politics of Israel go from here. On Monday, the Israeli Supreme Court struck down the reasonableness clause, a key element in the highly disputed judicial overhaul by Netanyahu's right-wing government. Will this landmark decision reignite pre-October 7th disputes in a country that was on the verge of a constitutional crisis? Donniel Hartman and Yossi Klein Halevi discuss the ongoing fight for Israel's democracy, how the trauma and tragedy of the war have become politicized, and whether the current feeling of national unity can be maintained amid the resurging political discourse. In an 8 to 7 vote, Israel's highest court on Monday ruled against a law that would limit its powers. Prime Minister Netanyahu's right-wing government had passed the reforms in parliament in an effort to overhaul the country's judicial system. The move was met with months of regular streets protests. And, we remember Peter Magubane, who shot photos in Soweto and across South Africa during apartheid and its unraveling. He eventually became Nelson Mandela's official photographer. Also, Kyiv was again targeted Tuesday morning by Russian missiles. We hear about the civilian toll and Ukraine's response. In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Rabea Eghbariah speaks with Sarah Anne Minkin, FMEP's Director of Programs & Partnerships, about his former client Attiya Nabaheen, a Palestinian teenager from Gaza who sued the Israeli Ministry of Defense for compensation for injuries caused by Israeli soldiers while he was walking, unarmed, on his family's land in late 2014, during a time of ceasefire, or "status quo." Deciding against Attiya, the Israeli Supreme Court "set a chilling precedent such that no one in Gaza can seek compensation for any damages caused by Israel," as Rabea Eghbariah wrote in a recent New York Times op-ed. This conversation discusses the case and its implications for Gazans and Palestinians more broadly. After surviving four wars in Gaza, Attiya Nabaheen was killed, along with his family, in an Israeli airstrike on October 8th. See Rabea Eghbariah's NYT op-ed: "An Unarmed Teen Was Shot During a Cease-Fire. Israel Was Never Held to Account."https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/03/opinion/unarmed-teen-israel-gaza.html Original music by Jalal Yaquoub.
On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, the free world doesn't want to be free anymore, and democracies don't want to be democracies anymore because we have become weak and are being destroyed from within by Marxism and terrorism. Our schools are all in on the destruction of America because the vast majority of public institutions have been devoured by Marxism. Hamas is killing their own people just like aggressive autocracies before them like Mao or Stalin because they seek to re-engineer society and human beings, and if you do not conform to the ideology you become expendable. The overlay between Marxism and Islamic Nazism is more similar than dissimilar. Also, the left in Israel is as bad as the left in America, and they want to fundamentally change the country and control the elections. Benjamin Netanyahu offered modest changes to the Israeli Supreme Court to return more control to the Knesset, which were rejected and he was told he doesn't have the authority. The Israeli left backed by the American Democrat left and the Biden Administration wants to destroy Netanyahu. Later, there was no basis for the judge in Manhattan to fine Donald Trump $5,000 because he did not like what Trump posted. This was an effort by a Democrat judge to put a scarlet letter on Trump because the defendant has the right to speak out and defend themselves. Meanwhile, the Judge in D.C. stayed her own censorship order, and if the prosecution is making their case publicly then so can the defendant. Learn more about your ad choices. Air Date 9/24/2023 Israel's politics have been upended by the return of Netanyahu as Prime Minister, put in office with the help of extremely far-right factions who have now pushed through reforms to the Israeli Supreme Court that fundamentally undermine their democracy. All this while they were already a farce of a democracy due to the maintenance of an apartheid-like system of differing rules applying to different residents based on ethnicity. Be part of the show! Dr. Steve talks about what's happening in Israel at the moment. It's an extraordinary development in the rise of a new conservative age, and it's one that has left the woke absolutely petrified! Highlights: "Many people don't realize that Israel, in fact, does not have a formal written constitution, it operates by a system of basic laws and rights which enjoy semi-constitutional status but, and this is what you have to get, there is NO constitutionally determined structure to their government, for right or for wrong, that's just the way it is!” "What the Israeli supreme court has been doing for the last few decades is intentionally perpetuating a never-ending leftwing court! Leftwing justices, that are totally outside of the new conservative cultural majority in Israel, keep frustrating that majority by appointing far left justices! And so the Knesset, which IS Israel's government, has decided to finally put an end to this constant, never-ending leftwing supreme court! And as of the other day, they have officially begun to do it! So what are leftists saying about this?" "The left has collapsed in Israel, it's either the right or the hard right! What we call the Overton Window, the political consensus, has shifted massively to the right!" “Israel is moving to the political and cultural right along with 90 percent of the rest of the world, and our woke legacy media is finding out that it's not Israel that's at risk of being isolated or left behind. The only ones ultimately getting left behind all over the world, is the woke left!” Timestamps: [01:08] Knesset, has officially passed a major law that will limit the power of the Israeli Supreme Court [02:45] What the media will never tell you about the Knesset [06:21] The left is absolutely flipping out at the new conservative majority in Israel [07:43] Israel's politics has swung way to the right Resources: Get carrying TODAY with Countrywide Concealed HERE: https://www.frebahlem.com/BG484F42/G38H44Q/ The Courageous Patriot Community is inviting YOU! Yesterday, Israel's parliament ratified the first bill of a judicial overhaul sought by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, setting off demonstrations and protests across the country. The bill takes away the Israeli Supreme Court's ability to nullify government decisions it finds “unreasonable in the extreme.” Supporters say this power was nebulous and enabled liberal judges to overturn the will of the electorate. Critics say the overhaul would reduce judicial oversight over the cabinet and give the government greater powers without necessary accountability. A political scientist at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem calls the conflict “a clash between the Israelis and the Jews,” with the Israelis representing the founders who envisioned a secular Zionist state and the Jews representing those who want to rebuild the Jewish kingdom that reigned over the land two thousand years ago. “It's a clash between a more civil identity and a more religious identity,” he adds. Richard Epstein defends Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's proposed judicial reforms. Are critics right that they're anti-democratic in nature? Or are they necessary following new expansive powers claimed by the Israeli Supreme Court?
