We're super privileged to chat online with Bahija Jallal, the CEO of Immunocore. Immunocore is the largest biotech in the UK and the 5th largest in Europe with a market cap of just over 3 billion dollars. We talk about how Immunocore has helped thousands of cancer patients and has become a commercial biotech. We also talk about why she thinks gender and race diversity are a business case and how AI is changing protein and biologics engineering.
Some of the most complex medicines available today are made from living cells or organisms - these treatments are called bio-pharmaceuticals and in this episode of The Life Scientific Dr Bahija Jallal, CEO of Immunocore, shares her story of leaving her home in Casablanca, Morocco to become a world leader in developing bio-pharmaceutical cancer treatments. She tells Professor Jim Al-Khalili that she has always found herself ahead of the curve. When she began in oncology, the study of cancer, the common treatment was chemotherapy which attacked all the cells in an affected area. Her first studies into cancer treatments were looking at how certain therapies could focus in on the cancerous cells and move away from what she describes as the 'sledgehammer' of traditional chemotherapy. It was an early step in what became known as targeted cancer therapies, and it set Bahjia on course for a career dedicated to developing innovative drugs to improve cancer patients' lives. Through a deep understanding of the science and a resolute commitment to putting treatments in the hands of people who need them, she has produced astonishing results.

Part of the secret, she says, is diversity of thought. Presented by Professor Jim Al-Khalili Produced by Tom Bonnett

Today's headlines tell of two men whose stories reflect opposite sides of the same terror coin. The good side is illustrated by Jason Spindler. He survived 9/11 only to be killed in a terror attack in Kenya. Fortunately, Mr. Spindler was late to work on September 11, 2001. Before he reached his office at the World Trade Center, he saw the first plane crash into the North Tower. This experience changed his life and sent him on a path to do good, advising people in Third World countries how to develop businesses that could sustain them and make them less vulnerable to terrorists. That's what he was doing in Nairobi, Kenya, until he fell victim to a terrorist attack himself. Hasher Jallal Taheb was an American who had become radicalized, a lone wolf wannabe terrorist, who planned an attack on the White House, when he couldn't get a passport to travel to ISIS territory. Fortunately, someone tipped off the authorities before he could carry out his plot. Hear how the FBI stopped him as the attack was imminent.
