In this episode, Brian welcomes Kyle back to the show for a raw, boots-on-the-ground conversation about Kyle's new venture, Backcountry Bigfoot, a YouTube channel built around the real-life experience of Sasquatch research in the wild. Rather than presenting a polished, overly produced version of the subject, Kyle explains that his goal is to bring viewers directly into the backcountry with him, capturing the everyday reality of expeditions, campfire conversations, tree breaks, footprints, strange sounds, unexpected moments, and the humor, exhaustion, awe, and uncertainty that come with searching for Sasquatch in some of the most active wilderness areas he has worked.Kyle shares how Backcountry Bigfoot came together, including Brian's role in helping him land on the name and shape the idea into something that could become more than just a channel. He talks about wanting to fully immerse himself in filming, editing, guiding, and documenting his research, even though it is all new territory for him. The heart of the project is authenticity: walking through the woods, talking through evidence as it is found, sitting around the fire after a long day, and giving viewers the kind of raw access that many people will never be able to experience in person. The conversation moves into Kyle's research area near Radium, where Brian previously spent time in the field and had experiences that left a lasting impression. They discuss the remote journey into the area, the powerful feeling of being truly away from civilization, and the kind of activity reported there, including rock throwing, wood knocks, strange vocalizations, “samurai chatter,” trailer movement, eerie night walks, and multiple alleged Sasquatch sightings. Kyle also recounts several personal and witnessed encounters, including his father seeing a Sasquatch near camp and a guest watching one cross a trail just as darkness settled in.A major part of the discussion focuses on the evidence found throughout the area, especially the overwhelming number of tree breaks and the unusual footprints preserved in the thick mossy substrate. Kyle explains how the moss reacts to normal human traffic compared with the deep impressions he believes were left by extremely heavy beings, some lasting for years because the moss is crushed, torn, and effectively killed in the shape of a foot.  Brian reflects on how difficult it is to appreciate the scale and strangeness of the tree breaks without seeing them firsthand, especially when they appear high off the ground, methodically broken, and far beyond what an average person could reproduce.Brian and Kyle also revisit some of the most memorable locations from the expedition, including the area known as Pinner Playground, a strange section of forest filled with unusual stick formations, teepee-like structures, possible trackways, and an energy that both men describe as hard to explain. They also discuss the discovery of a massive structure involving enormous trees placed against an ancient tree deep in an area where machinery could not realistically access, raising more questions than answers about how it could have been made.Back Country Bigfoot YouTube ChannelEmail BrianJoin Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? Today we are revisiting a tragic case of negligence which originally captivated us back in 2024.  When Marie and Pierre Curie discovered radium in 1898, the chemical element was quickly adopted by manufacturers for its luminescent properties that would go on to be used in, among other things, the painting of clock faces, watches, and instrument panels, allowing them to be seen in the dark. At the time, the introduction of radioluminescent materials into manufacturing was hailed as a scientific solution to an age-old frustration, but it didn't take long before that solution was shown to have terrible consequences. As a radioactive element, radium is highly toxic to humans, particularly when ingested or inhaled. While it seemed unlikely that anyone would ingest or inhale the radium used to paint a clockface, this fact posed a serious problem for the largely female factory workers whose job it was to paint the dials. These “Radium Girls,” as they would come to be known, not only spent most of their day in close proximity to the paint, but also employed a technique in which they frequently wet their paintbrushes with their mouths, consuming small amounts of radium in the process. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, hundreds of young women working in at least three radium dial factories in the United States suffered deadly radiation poisoning as a result of working so closely with radium, all without any safety protocols and completely unaware of the dangers. After dozens of deaths, a group of factory workers successfully sued their employers for damages, exposing the widespread disregard for worker safety. While the suits were generally a major victory for the American labor movement, it was ultimately hard-won and little comfort to those who would die within a few years. This week on Sasquatch Odyssey, I sit down with Brett from Colorado, a lifelong outdoorsman, avid hunter, and longtime listener who finally decided to send his story in. What unfolds across this conversation is one of those grounded, no-frills encounters that I think hits harder than the big sexy sightings, because Brett isn't trying to sell you anything. He's a guy who grew up in the Colorado mountains, knows what belongs out there, and ran headfirst into something that didn't.Brett's first brush with the unknown happened when he was around 16 or 17 years old, somewhere in 2006 or 2007, while camping at the alpine lakes on the western side of I-25 in southern Colorado. A fire, a friend, a quiet night, and then a sound coming out of the tree line that didn't match anything he had ever heard in those mountains. He describes it as a howl, but a howl with bass to it, something guttural that didn't track as canine. His buddy went pale almost immediately and told him his grandpa had warned him about Bigfoot. That was the first time Brett had ever really heard the word in any serious way, and the wood knocks rolling in from the timber that night did the rest of the work. The bigger story, and the one that has stayed with him for almost twenty years now, happened in the summer of 2009 on a remote stretch of road between Durango and Alamosa. Brett, his now-wife, and his best friend Paul were on a road trip out to California after graduating high school. Somewhere south of the Four Corners, deep in unfamiliar country and lost off the MapQuest directions, a doe ran out in front of the Jeep and refused to leave the road. She kept pace in the headlights for a couple hundred yards, which any hunter will tell you is not normal deer behavior. Then Brett saw it on an embankment off the driver's side. Seven to ten feet tall, black and shaggy, and a pair of eyes he describes as Texas Longhorn orange catching the headlights and then dimming as he passed. His friend Paul, who comes from a Hispanic and Native American family, refused to discuss it for the next ten or fifteen miles down the road. When he finally broke, he confirmed everything Brett had seen, then immediately shut it back down with three words that get to the heart of so much of this phenomenon. We don't talk about him. Paul had been raised to believe that talking about this creature is what brings him around to take children. That cultural weight, that learned silence, is something I've explored on this show many times with Fred from Alaska and others, and Brett's experience puts a fresh face on it.We get into the wood knocks Brett heard up at the alpine lakes and how they compare to what I heard with Todd Standing up in Radium and what I've experienced right here on my own property in North Carolina.Brett describes the sound as more of a hollow whop than a wood-on-wood thud, and we talk through my growing belief, shaped by years of conversations with Doug Hajicek and Tom Powell, that a lot of these knocks are being made with the mouth and hand rather than with sticks or clubs. The simple reality is that you cannot walk into the woods and reliably find a piece of wood solid enough to produce that kind of report. The physics don't work. The conversation moves into eye shine, which is where Brett's hunting background really earns its keep. He breaks down the difference between the green and white shine you get off deer and elk, the yellow on cats and bears, and the quick flash of a mountain lion crossing a road, and then explains why what he saw that night fit none of it. The eyes were steady. They tracked the Jeep without flinching. The creature didn't move, didn't hide, didn't react the way anything in those woods is supposed to react.Brett's read, and I think it's a sharp one, is that the thing was hunting that doe and the Jeep just happened to roll into the middle of it.We spend real time on the question of why people clam up after these encounters, and Brett's answer is honest and uncomfortable. Most of the time it's not culture, it's social pressure. He had this conversation with his own parents after the sighting and got the standard dismissals. Probably a bear. You were tired. It was late. He's watched friends shut down their own stories mid-sentence at a bar because of how the table might react. His framing is one I appreciated. If you are comfortable with who you are, it shouldn't matter whether your best friend believes you. The story is yours either way. There's a moment in this episode I want to call out because it caught me off guard in the best way. Brett pauses the interview to ask me a question, which almost never happens on this show, and he proposes a theory about my own experiences filming My Bigfoot Life out in the Pacific Northwest in the summer of 2024. He suggests that the calm I felt during that night hike, when I was within ten feet of one of these things and chose to chase it up the ridge rather than retreat, is the same conditioned response that kicked in during my sixteen years in law enforcement, including the two times I was shot at on the job with the Atlanta Police Department. The sheepdog reflex. Run toward the danger, not away from it. I had never quite framed it that way myself, and he might be onto something. We close with Brett's confirmation moment, which came years after the sighting when a Native American truck driver from the Four Corners region described the exact same orange eyes on the exact same pass without Brett feeding him a single detail. That kind of independent corroboration, from a man whose culture has been quietly tracking this creature for centuries, is the kind of data point that doesn't show up in a documentary but matters more than most of what does.Brett's encouragement to anyone sitting on a story is the same encouragement I have been giving for years on this show. Send it in. It doesn't have to be five feet away. It doesn't have to come with video. Every account is another data point in a repository we are still building together, and the only way this conversation moves forward is if people stop swallowing what they saw.A huge thank you to Brett for trusting me with his story, for the great questions he turned back on me, and for being exactly the kind of grounded, thoughtful witness this subject needs more of.Email BrianGet Our FREE NewsletterGet Brian's Books Leave Us A VoicemailVisit Our WebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sasquatch-odyssey--4839697/support.Have you had a Bigfoot encounter, Sasquatch sighting, Dogman experience, or other cryptid or paranormal encounter? In this episode of Biographers in Conversation, Dava Sobel chats with Dr Gabriella Kelly-Davies about The Elements of Marie Curie: How the Glow of Radium Lit a Path for Women in Science. Here's what you'll discover in this episode: Dava Sobel used the periodic table as the structural framework, with each chapter keyed to an element that represents a period of Curie's life or scientific work. Dava selected the title The Elements of Marie Curie to emphasise how the chemical elements shaped her discoveries and personal life. Dava wrote in the first person as Marie Curie, translating her letters into English though preserving her voice and perspective to create an immersive narrative. Dava traced the path for women in science by highlighting generations of women mentored by Curie, showing her enduring influence beyond her own research. Dava created a chemical chronology that parallels scientific discoveries with biography, such as linking radium extraction to gruelling lab work. Dava ended with ‘Carbon' to reflect on Curie's legacy and the organic, interconnected nature of her scientific and humanitarian impact.

"Radioimmunoconjugates work through a dual mechanism that combines immunologic targeting with localized radiation delivery. The monoclonal antibody components bind to specific tumor-associated antigens such as CD20, expressed on malignant B cells. Once found, the attached radioisotope delivers beta radiation directly to the tumor, causing DNA damage and cell death," Sabrina Enoch, MSN, RN, OCN®, CNMT, NMTCB (CT), theranostics clinical specialist at Highlands Oncology in Rogers, AR, told Jaime Weimer, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BS, AOCNS®, manager of oncology nursing practice at ONS, during a conversation about radioimmunoconjugates. Highlights From This Episode "Radioimmunoconjugates are a specialized subset of radiopharmaceuticals designed to combine the specificity of monoclonal antibodies with the cytotoxic power of radiation. ... Early development focused on B-cell malignancies, particularly non-Hodgkin lymphoma." TS 1:51  "An important concept for nurses to understand is the crossfire effect, where radiation can affect nearby tumor cells, even though not every cell expressed has the target antigen. This helps explain why these agents can be effective even in heterogeneous tumors." TS 3:40 "At present, 90 Y-ibritumomab tiuxetan is the only radioimmunoconjugate approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in clinical use. Historically, iodine-131 tositumomab played a major role in establishing these therapy classes, but it's also useful to contrast radioimmunoconjugates with other radiopharmaceuticals, such as iodine-131 therapies, which a lot of places do at this time, used for thyroid diseases, or radium 223, used for metastatic prostate cancer. Unlike those agents, radioimmunoconjugates rely on antibody-mediated targeted rather than physiologic uptake or bone affinity." TS 4:55 "I just try to explain to [patients] that radiation exposure is like being next to a flame. The further you are away, the less heat you get, the less exposure you get. These patients can be radioactive for three days, seven days—it just depends on how fast they excrete it through their bodies with half-life exposure." TS 9:33 "While only one agent is currently approved, the principles established by radioimmunoconjugates continue to guide development for newer targeted radiopharmaceuticals. Emerging agents aim to improve targeting, reduce toxicity, and expand indications beyond hematologic malignancies. This evolution underscores the importance of nursing education in this rapidly changing field." TS 10:41 "Radioimmunoconjugates represent an important bridge between traditional oncology treatments and the future of targeted therapies. Oncology nurses play a vital role in ensuring safe delivery, patient understanding, and collaboration between multidisciplinary teams. So, it's very important to educate and also stay up to date on evidence-based practices." TS 13:12

Brooklyn-based goth-folk duo Charming Disaster's upcoming album The Double—their seventh full-length release—explores the world that exists behind the one we know, featuring songs inspired by nature, mortality, magic, ritual, and literary genres ranging from science fiction to Victorian horror. The new album was co-produced by band members Ellia Bisker and Jeff Morris with longtime collaborator, recording engineer Don Godwin. All but one of the ten tracks were recorded at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, MD, with one song recorded by circus music composer Peter Bufano in Boston, MA. The Double will be released on CD, as a 12-inch colored vinyl LP, and on all digital platforms on May 16, 2025. The vinyl will be released in a 2-disc package that also includes Charming Disaster's 2024 compilation Time Ghost, a collection of singles released over the last decade.   The Double invites listeners to step across the border of an alternate reality, where spells are cast, time travel is possible, plants are taking over civilization, and vampires lurk in the shadows. Adventures in the darkness lie beyond the threshold.   The album's ten songs include “Black Locust,” a lullaby about mortality; “New Moon,” a magical nature ritual; “Trick of the Light,” a reimagining of Bram Stoker's Dracula; “Time Machine,” in which Charming Disaster change the past and start over again; “Scavengers,” a walk in the woods with vultures and bones; “Beautiful Night,” a defiant response to struggles with depression; “Vitriol,” a tribute to artist Thomas Little, who turns guns into ink; “Haunted Lighthouse,” a swashbuckling sea voyage; “Gang of Two,” a true crime adventure; and “Green Things,” a love letter to what grows between the cracks (and its inevitable takeover).   The album features an array of talented collaborators. Co-producer Don Godwin, who has worked on Charming Disaster's entire discography, contributed bass, drums, and horns as well as engineering and mixing. “Haunted Lighthouse” features Broadway percussionist Mike Dobson along with circus composer Peter Bufano, who played piano and accordion and engineered the track at Cirkestra World Headquarters in Boston, MA (with additional tracking at Tonal Park). “Scavengers” features cello recorded by Kate Wakefield of the duo Lung, who also created the string arrangement for “Beautiful Night.” Stefan Zeniuk of Gato Logo contributed saxophone to “Green Things.”   In conjunction with The Double, Charming Disaster is releasing the second edition of their “oracle deck” (similar to a Tarot deck). The Charming Disaster Oracle Deck contains 72 cards (including 12 new cards for the second edition), each representing one of the songs from Charming Disaster's discography. The cards feature illustrations commissioned from more than thirty different artists. The deck can be used as a divination tool, or as a visual accompaniment to Charming Disaster's music. The duo themselves use these cards in their live performances to determine the set through the element of chance.   Charming Disaster was formed by Bisker and Morris in 2012, inspired by the gothic humor of Edward Gorey and Tim Burton, the murder ballads of the American Folk tradition, and the dramatic flair of the cabaret. Together the duo write songs that tell stories about myth, magic, and mortality, using two voices to explore dark narratives and characters with a playfully macabre sensibility.   On their critically acclaimed albums Love, Crime & Other Trouble (2015), Cautionary Tales (2017), and SPELLS + RITUALS (2019), Charming Disaster explored death, crime, folklore, and the occult. On Our Lady of Radium (2022), they turned their attention to science and explored the life and discoveries of pioneering scientist Marie Curie. On Super Natural History (2023), they united the natural world and the metaphysical realm in a musical cabinet of curiosities.   The duo put out two releases in 2024: Time Ghost, an album-length collection of songs released as singles between 2013 and 2024; and Dance Me to the End of Bela Lugosi's Lovesong, an EP of covers paying tribute to a few of the band's influences: Leonard Cohen's “Dance Me to the End of Love,” “Bela Lugosi's Dead” by Bauhaus, and The Cure's “Lovesong.”   In Charming Disaster's live shows, the duo combine vocal harmonies and clever lyrics with ukulele, guitar, and foot percussion, with a cabaret-influenced performance style that straddles the line between concert and theatre and has been described as “haunted vaudeville” (Splice Magazine). Charming Disaster's music has been featured on the spooky hit podcast Welcome to Night Vale. They have opened for legendary cello-rock ensemble Rasputina, Goth icon Voltaire, and Amanda Palmer's punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls. Their concerts have captivated audiences across the United States and in Europe. They have appeared alongside storytellers, comedians, fire eaters, puppets, burlesque artists, poets, and circus performers. My friend Kim loves crime stories from Crime Junkie to Dateline. Me? Not so much. But I enjoy a good, not-too-gory crime story where the bad guy gets it in the end. Since I'm part of a vast cancer community, I hear stories that encourage me and some that make me so upset that I can't sleep. This is one of those stories. In 1898, Pierre and Madam Curie discovered radium. In 1903, Pierre Curie said, "He would not care to be alone with radium in a room as it would burn all the skin off his body, destroy his eyesight, and probably kill him."  In the 1920s, young women (average age 14) were hired to paint radium on watches and clock dials. Radium was fluorescent, so it made the numbers easier to read. However, it was also incredibly toxic and could turn bones into a fragile honeycomb. Fast forward to New Jersey in 1920 to the U.S. Radium Corporation (USRC). The owners and scientists at USRC knew that radium in large amounts was very dangerous. Yet these young girls were told, "After you dip your paintbrush in radium, put the tip in your mouth to make it a finer point before you start painting." When I told my husband how many of these young women died from radium poisoning, he said, "This is murder." Yes, it was murder. But no one went to jail. However, these women did get their revenge. ______ Ground Luxe When I was forced into menopause with my cancer diagnosis, restful sleep NO LONGER HAPPENED FOR ME. One of my podcast guests shared that he has become a great sleeper, partly thanks to grounding sheets. After my skepticism passed, my desperation to sleep took over. I started reading articles, and I discovered that the science is solid. Studies have shown that participants using grounding sheets experience a significant drop in cortisol levels, leading to improved sleep quality and reduced stress.  What did I have to lose? I researched, found the best grounding sheets on the market for the best price, and bought them. It took me a few nights, but I sleep much deeper now. I fall asleep faster and wake up feeling refreshed! I wish someone had told me about these sheets years ago. I contacted the company, and they offered my community a 20% discount! https://groundluxe.com/deborahenos Use the code Enos20 for 20% off. ______ Toups and Co It's happened...I'm putting beef tallow on my face, and my skin looks lush, and it doesn't smell like a hamburger :) I've seen the TikTok videos about beef tallow. I avoided trying it because it sounded like I'd be putting grease on my face. Enough people asked me about it, so I started reading more information and trying out various tallows. There was one company that stood out to me. I feel like I hit a home run with the brand Toups and Co. I first heard of this brand on a friend's podcast (Holistic Hilda with the Weston A Price Foundation). She interviewed the founder, Emily Toups. She was a mom looking for a solution to her child's skin issues. She was frustrated with the lack of progress with drugstore and prescription meds, so she reached out to a local farmer for tallow. The rest, as they say, is history. Her daughter is healed, and my skin looks great, haha! Thank you, Toups Family, for making such excellent products and offering my community a 15% discount. I'm currently using: Frankincense Skim Balm Blue Tansy Body Oil The Nourishing Skin Care Set (this includes skin balm, body oil, tinted lip chap, and a tallow bar—and it's on sale!). Deodorant - it really works! Use the link below for 15% off of your order: https://toupsandco.com/DEBORAHENOS ______ Martinelli Apple Cider I like having a cocktail with girlfriends. And before I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I never gave it a second thought. Alcohol was part of my social life, or I'd have a glass of wine on a flight to chill out. Recent research has made me rethink my choices. Research shared by the Susan G. Komen Center tells us that each cocktail I consume can increase my breast cancer risk by 7%. And 2-3 drinks per day can increase my risk by 20%. This is why I always have Martinelli Apple Cider on hand. It's my favorite Mocktail!

While the suits were generally a major victory for the American labor movement, it was ultimately hard-won and little comfort to those who would die within a few years.Thank you to the incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesCamden Courier-Post. 1928.
