In this episode of She's Not Done Yet: Conversations with women over 50, I (Becky Berry) had the great pleasure of talking with my friend Valorie Baylis. Valorie is an Atlanta-area technology veteran and digital implementation specialist who's worked at big companies (AT&T, WebMD) and small start-ups. She's currently a freelance project manager at Delta Air Lines, hence the extremely cool photo!  Valorie and I met when she attended a meeting of Next Chapter for Women, a Meetup a friend and I founded in 2016. Our meetup turned into a private group and we're still going strong 8 years later. I've also worked with Valorie as she's negotiated career changes over the last 8 years. She's brilliant - a great speaker, friend, and thinker. She's a University of Michigan alum and huge Michigan football fan. We've had a couple of moments when Michigan played UGA. Since we're really good friends, it always works out! As you listen to the podcast, you'll notice Valorie has a great voice. She's also a singer. In this episode, Valorie and I talk about the nature of friendship and how social media can help us stay connected to far flung friends. She shares a great story about a pod she and some girlfriends created during COVID that continues with daily text. I particularly enjoyed our conversation about welcoming the possibility of new friendships forming as we age.  Thanks in Advance for your help: I hope you enjoy this episode. Guilt is a primary hidden driver that we've accepted as a norm. How much of your lives and actions are being driven by this life draining motive? Probably more than you are aware of. But why, is the question. And how can you stop it? I'm with Valorie Burton. Valorie is founder of the Coaching and Positive Psychology (CaPP) Institute and has written more than a dozen books on personal development. She has a unique combination of research, faith, and personal transparency that inspires people to action and delivers practical tools to find fulfillment and purpose in work and life. Her book, “Let Go Of The Guilt,” is my muse. Valerie's research into the reality and nuances of guilt and the hold it has on us is profound, which is why I pursued her to be on the show and shine a light on this very insidious and pervasive driver that is leading so many of us to frustration, exhaustion, burn out and unfulfillment. I begin with Valorie's story. What were her early drivers? What drove her to push and strive and get herself into the Air Force Academy on a presidential appointment, then what drove her to drop out? What drove her to realize how much of her drive was fueled by guilt and what drove her to start a PR firm then abandon it to be an author and speaker? What drove her to marry, then divorce, then to marry again? What drives her today? Type Valorie Burton in any search engine and you'll find her everywhere, and her coaching business is at cappinstitute.com Got a comment or question about an episode? In 2019, I did what many corporate types would call "the unthinkable." I walked away from opportunities at a Fortune 10 after being "surplussed" without a job lined up. Sure, I had opportunities externally. Yes, I had a seedling of a business that I had started, but I wanted to take the time to think through my next step methodically. I had a mission that only a few were aware of, and that drove me to seek out the one thing that I needed to activate it. Could I do it and remain in corporate? I had interested organizations telling me that I could do both-pursue my calling to author books and speak across the country and internationally and work for them. But I knew that would eventually cause friction. I'd lived it already. That one piece was missing that would activate my mission, and a scroll through Instagram and an ad from a longtime sisterfriend and former client would ultimately become the the gateway to my destiny. I let that sisterfriend turn the tables on me this week, and I thought it would be great to finally share my story: how I went from there...to here, five years later with a thriving, global executive and personal coaching and consulting practice, a publishing journey that has been extraordinary and the speaker tour that began in 2015 and has yet to end. What took me from a 25+ year-long career in strategic communication, agency side, agency owner, and client side to here? I pass Valorie Burton, MAPP, MCC the mic on my show, The Culture Soup Podcast ® as she featured me in her global preview call for The Coaching and Positive Psychology (CaPP) Institute. That is where I earned my certification that would tee me up for credentialing at the world's most respected coaching organizations, International Coaching Federation. I began with her Coach Training Intensive (CTI). So it's befitting that I allowed Valorie to throw back the covers on my purpose-driven story. My pen as my sword, my speaking as my munitions, evidence-based coaching, I discovered, would ultimately become my armor. Join me and Val for this inspiring and powerful conversation about what it actually takes to take on coaching as a profession in this special, extended video edition of The Culture Soup Podcast ® brought to you in part by The CaPP Institute. We're continuing to celebrate the five years anniversary of NSC Coaching, and six years for the podcast with this exclusive rebroadcast of "Conversation with a Coach", and it streams everywhere Thursday afternoon.

In an ideal world, we'd all admit we need help and get coaching to work on improving ourselves. But that takes two things:1. Admitting it - which is possibly what you've already done by being here2. A coach - which you may not have or be able to afford yetSo, while we wait for everything to work together for your good and for you to eventually have a coach, what else can we do to make sure we're moving forward?Well, we can self-coach. Self-coaching is something we should do whether we have an external coach or not, but all the more so if we don't. Life is hard, and we face various challenges that we don't often know how to navigate. We can get overwhelmed by decisions or indecision and we can get stuck in our minds. But being your own coach is like having a toolkit to navigate these challenges that come your way. Motivation is like the wind. It's a lie. HA! No, but seriously. The truth is, no one feels motivated 100% of the time. Those mindset gurus and motivational speakers and ultra-successful people you see on Social Media may be more motivated than you, but even they struggle sometimes. So, if it's not motivation, what is it that makes them different? Is it just that they love what they do? Or that it comes naturally to them? Or maybe they just have better inspiration. No, it's that they've learned to distinguish their feelings from their decisions. Have you ever felt so overwhelmed you don't know what to do next? Most of us have been there: it all feels too much, we feel the pressure of a deadline, and we try to do it all ourselves. If your overwhelm is becoming a repetitive pattern, then it's time to apply the 4 Ds! Please join us. "There's a lot of power in being able to delay things when you're delaying them intentionally.
