Raised on blues, soul, and rock and roll gave him the heart of a flower child. Educated by the turmoil of Vietnam, Civil Rights, and the Sexual Revolution turned James into a gladiator. Realizing the precariousness of life, he took on an adventurous outlook trying anything once, and if it did not kill him, maybe twice. 12 years of Catholic education and a couple of years in college spread between wild drug induce euphoric years, which did not kill him, produced a unique moral compass that swings in any direction it wants. A scientific mind and a spirit that nothing is impossible if you want it bad enough guides his writings. He enjoys traveling to new places and seeing what life has to offer. With little other interest outside the bedroom, and still a hopeless insomniac, he is free to pound out plots. Killer With A Heart is the first in a series for Bulletproof Morris ‘Mojo' Johnson and Killer With Three Heads continues the saga. He began writing short stories and poetry back in the early years. In his twenties, James moved on to novels, but fell out of love with the whole publishing industry. He worked in the financial industry and later got a degree in computer programming, James' other love. He built a successful career as a software engineer designing, developing and maintaining systems for the government and the private sector. He has been programming for nearly forty years in various languages. With the advantages provided by the expanding and growing self publishing business, print on demand, and the explosion of social media/internet as a viable means of advertising James returned to his first love, unleashing the characters in his head. He published the Killer Series, "Killer With A Heart" and "Killer With Three Heads", the first two in the series. This is my second time interviewing James L. Hill. I interviewed him in 2020 during the pandemic. When I first started my podcast. It was a pleasure interviewing him again on December 28, 2022. Every time James and I talk, we can talk for hours so of course, we had to cut it short. Our conversation is full of enjoyment. James is an entrepreneur who loves helping people through his publishing or his writing. James L. Hill, a.k.a. JL Hill, is a native New Yorker from the South Bronx, Fort Apache, of the turbulent '60s. He earned a degree in computer programming, which is his other love. As a multi-genre author, his experiences seasoned his novels and the worlds he imagined. He loves Fantasy, Adult Fiction, and Sci-Fi novels. James started RockHill Publishing LLC to publish his work and give others access to the literary world. James' novel the four-part adult urban crime series, "The Killer Series", is complete. James L. Hill was raised in New York and he has been around a lot of crime inclusion the mob scenes. He decided to write crime novels based on the crime he grew up around. As an Independent Author and Publisher, he has four books in print presently with two more due out this year. He is working on the Killer Series, a four-book crime novel, of which book 1 and 2 have received five-stars reviews. In progress is the Gemstone Series which is a three-book historical fantasy story spanning millennia. The Emerald Lady is in print now and The Ruby Cradle is due out this year. On October 8, over 300 libraries participated in Indie Author Day. These libraries hosted events that allowed independent authors to share their books with the library patrons. The libraries also featured books by local authors and hosted lectures for potential writers on the publishing process. Our library, The Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library in Virginia Beach, Virginia hosted a great event. It featured an opportunity for many local independent authors to participate in a book signing event. This allowed these authors to be exposed to the regular weekend patrons of the library. The library also held the following lectures: “A Guide to Publishing: Things Authors Should Know” – John Koehler “Editing Tips to Fire Up Your Fictions” – Crystal Walton “Rising Above the Noise: How to Increase Your Sales on Amazon.com” – Chris Kennedy A Skype session with A.G. Riddle, author of “The Atlantis Gene” We also watched a live webcast from indieauthorday.com. It was a very insightful and informative webcast that is good for any author to view. I was so impressed by the diversity of books written by these authors. I was inspired to grab my recording equipment and began conducting short interviews with as many authors as possible. It was wonderful talking with each of the authors I could interview. Their passion for their books and their willingness to take time to share was inspiring. It was at this event that my vision for this site became clear. This site will be a platform to showcase the work of independent and small press authors. The world of publishing is in the process of changing. The barriers that prevented authors for publishing their books have been lowered or destroyed. This means that more books by a wider variety of authors are available. This also means that it is harder for an author to get their book in front of readers. It also means that readers have more choices but many of those choices may never be presented to the reader. “Talking with Authors” will be a bridge between authors and readers. Each week, “Talking with Authors” will bring you interviews with independent and small press authors of all genres. I will also bring you news of book festivals, book signings and any other book related news I can find. So, let’s start off with two interviews I conducted at the Indie Author event. We begin by talking to Ward Howarth, the author of “River City Blues”. River City Blues is a historical crime thriller set in Richmond, Virginia during the year of 1944. (7 min 46 sec).
