Joining us today is the directing great Neil Marshall (Dog Soildiers, The Decent) and the inspiring actress and producer Liz Farahadi to talk about SHORT film making, the things that can go wrong, why they are important, why planning is vital and how you always need to be ready to adapt. AND their short film Keep Young and Beautiful. We also talk applying for film festivals, why you might or might got get selected, producing short films, what goes into them and the difference between shorts and features for directors. Neil burst onto the scene and punched us all in the face with the cult werewolf action-horror classic "Dog Soldiers" and then, he plunged us into true claustrophobic terror with "The Descent" a film that won critical acclaim and cemented his status as a master of modern horror. He then unleashed the post-apocalyptic action mayhem of "Doomsday" and the brutal historical epic "Centurion,". More recently, he directed the period horror "The Reckoning" and the creature feature "The Lair." And it's not just features! He's brought his distinctive, cinematic vision to some of the biggest TV shows out there, directing two of the most epic battle episodes in "Game of Thrones" history – "Blackwater" and "The Watchers on the Wall" – which earned him an Emmy nomination. He's also helmed episodes of "Black Sails," "Constantine," "Hannibal," "Westworld," and "Lost in Space. And also joining us today, we have an incredible talent in Liz Farahadi, who truly embodies the spirit of independent filmmaking: an accomplished actress and a dedicated producer who champions diverse voices and impactful stories. You might know her from her acting roles in compelling independent films like "Losing Grace" (where she also served as a producer) and "Wild Bones," as well as various theatre productions and commercials. She's also had roles in the well-loved British soaps, "EastEnders" and "Coronation Street," along with other dramas like "Two Thousand Acres of Sky," "Miss Marple," and "Doctor Who. She's a passionate advocate for filmmakers, recognizing the need for support, especially for those from marginalized backgrounds. This drive led her to found and direct The Soho London Independent Film Festival (SohoLIFF), a fantastic platform dedicated to creating opportunities and celebrating films with social and environmental impact. She's currently in post-production on new short films like "Losing Grace" and "Daughter," and developing features like "Xenos" and "Polly." Her latest film as an actress and producer, "Keep Young & Beautiful," delves into the darker world of beauty standards with a powerful and humorous edge. BUFFALO, NY — July 8, 2025 — As populations worldwide continue to age, understanding the mechanisms and manifestations of cognitive aging is increasingly urgent for science, medicine, and society. Age-related cognitive decline ranges from mild memory lapses to the onset of dementia, and is shaped by a complex interplay of molecular, cellular, systemic, and social determinants. In this special collection, Aging (Aging-US) seeks to bring together cutting-edge research that spans the cellular and molecular underpinnings of cognitive aging with insights into the psychosocial, behavioral, and environmental factors that modulate its course. By integrating basic biology with translational and societal dimensions, this collection aims to foster a holistic understanding of how and why cognitive function changes with age—and what can be done to preserve it. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspectives across model systems and human studies, particularly those that promote interdisciplinary insights and translational potential. There's only one day left to make submissions on the Ennis Transport Plan. Over 50 residents living near the Old Mill Road in Ennis attended a protest yesterday over council plans to create a one-way traffic system with a cycle lane on a prominent thoroughfare in the town. Under the Draft Ennis Local Transport Plan , its proposed to make the southbound lane of Mill Road stretching from Carmody Street to Harvey Quay's a one way street, to facilitate a footpath, which can't be built at present as a protected structure which cannot be knocked protrudes onto the roadway. It's proposed in this case that Northbound traffic will be re-routed through a residential and commercial area of Cloughleigh. Clare FM's Darragh Dolan was at the protest yesterday and he first spoke to Cloughleigh resident Mary McNamara. A traffic survey by local Garage Owner Pat Foudy has indicated that the new plans will bring up to 5,990 additional vehicles a day up Old Mill Road, and that just 0.2% of traffic analysed on the proposed one-way street at Mill Road was either a pedestrian or a cyclist. The community are now raising concerns over potential congestion as well as road safety issues, particularly in relation to HGVs, while the owner of the protected building at the centre of the controversey claims he was not consulted by the local authority about any potential solution. For more on this, Peter O'Connell was joined by Bridget Ginnity of the Ennis Green Party.

Justin & Jon are back! And even better... on summer vacation! Our goal is to bring you a new episode once a week over break, & we're starting off strong. We've done episodes about generating stories: live outlines, various competitions, even "how-to" episodes for elements of a story... but we haven't talked much about what comes after you've finished. In a recent survey on our Patreon, our WiPpersnappers indicated that their most wanted episode was one detailing the details of submitting stories to presses. Ask & ye shall receive. We teachers assigned each other homework: submit 5 stories for publication this week. As is representative of our current status as functioning human beings: Jon completed 11 submissions and Justin managed 3.Some of this episode might seem rudimentary to many of the oft-published veterans in our audience, but to anyone still a novice in that area, this may prove to be one of our most valuable episodes! Important links are below, so read on... but first, our sponsor! We are grateful to Tadpole Press for sponsoring this week's episode of Writing in Progress. They specifically wanted to share with our audience that submissions are open for their 100 word writing contest, ending November 30th. Entries must be 100 words or less (including title!), can be previously published, you're allowed multiple entries (but must pay the $15 fee each time), first prize wins $1,000 USD, open to all writers. You can submit (and find further guidelines) here!Important links mentioned:The submission grinder can be found here.

Since September 2020, Jennifer's life has been overshadowed by fear. She's been followed. Harassed. Watched. And no matter how many times she's called the police—or even rushed into a station, terrified and pleading—help has felt just out of reach. When she finally filed for a restraining order, she hoped the system would protect her. But instead, the judge said there wasn't enough evidence. That what her stalker was doing wasn't technically “illegal.” Now, feeling cornered and unheard, Jennifer is speaking out. To raise awareness. To reclaim her voice. And to find the support she's long been denied.HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED STALKING? Melissa, a single mom and social media influencer, became the target of a dangerous stalker after he found her online. What started with anonymous calls and obsessive messages quickly escalated. He tracked down her address, flew across the country, tried to break into her home, left disturbing items in her mailbox, and stayed at a hotel just a mile away—all while posting his actions in real time on TikTok. Even with mounting evidence, law enforcement failed to intervene. Left to protect herself, Melissa took matters into her own hands. She filed for a restraining order and, without police support, had to lure him to a public place just to get him served. She was eventually granted full protection. Her case is still under investigation, and she's hoping he'll be charged with criminal stalking for the terror he put her through.HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED STALKING?
