TW: Grief. Today I want to talk with you about someone very important to me, my late mentor Jarritt Ahmed Sheel. I made a promise to myself that I would only come back to podcasting when I felt ready to record the first episode back which had to be in honor of Jarritt. I want everyone to know Jarritt the way I, and so many who love him, know him. Here's to the man who created community with everyone in his orbit. Rest in peace Jarritt, I love you! -- Jarritt's wonderful wife, Antonia Sheel, along with Jarritt's colleagues at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, are working to establish a scholarship and several other initiatives to honor the memory and work of Jarritt. Jarritt worked with countless people from all walks of life during his time as an educator, band leader, mentor and friend. His reach was impactful and meaningful to so many. Please consider joining in these efforts. Our goal is to raise $60,000! This will allow us to create an endowed scholarship fund as well as create a lecture series named in Jarritt's honor. While this will be an ongoing effort with the first goal being to raise the minimum $10K to establish the scholarship by mid April 2023, every amount counts! Also, consider asking if your employer would match your gift. If you have a business, consider making a tax deductible contribution. You will be supporting the growth and development of students as well as fostering powerful conversations around music education. If you would like to donate to the scholarship at Berklee in memory of Jarritt Ahmed Sheel, please visit: Berklee.edu/giving (https://www.berklee.edu/giving) and designate this scholarship (You may have to click OTHER and write in his name below that: Jarritt Ahmed Sheel Memorial Scholarship). OR Checks may be sent to Berklee College of Music, 1140 Boylston Street, MS-855 IA, Boston, MA 02115, please note on the check "Jarritt Ahmed Sheel Memorial Scholarship".
We received the news that our friend and past guest, Jarritt Sheel, had passed. We met via social media as he was a supporter and fan of our podcast. He booked us for several semesters to do guest lectures for various of his courses at the Berklee School of Music. In return, he would always reach out to us to celebrate our multiple milestones. We were talking about continuing our collaborations and potentially being on SXSW EDU. Our prayers are with his family, friends, and loved ones. He was indeed a beautiful person, educator, musician, and leader. May he rest in peace. Support the show

My name is Jarritt Ahmed Sheel, and I am an artist who just wants to place all of the yearnings & desires given to him by the Lord... on the canvas of humanity. I love playing music and doing my art to the best of my ability! I love cooking, traveling, learning, teaching, and most of all performing in front of others. I am a musician(trumpet) who is really into Gospel, Funk, Jazz, Punk, Reggae and most of all HIP-HOP! One day soon I look forward to opening up a community based arts school that focuses on learning that revolves around the discussion of freedom and democracy, through experiences with Hip-Hop and Jazz. I am really interested in family and making it and God the center point of my life. I recently accepted an assistant professor of music education position at the Berklee College of Music, and I am a Ed.D. candidate in music & music education at Teachers College, Columbia University. I attended Florida A&M University where I attained my B.S. in Music Performance, Northern Illinois University for my M.M. in Jazz Studies and I recently achieved my Ed.M. in Music & Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. My research interests are focused on the intersections that occur between hip-hop and music education. I am a huge fan of critical theory (CRT & Whiteness Theory) and follow the writings of Stephen Brookfield, Steven Preskill, Michel Foucault, Cornel West, Maxine Greene and Roland Barthes. I find that critical theory is becoming increasingly more relevant in music education's march toward progress. I am interested in investigating teacher preparation and the performance experiences that pre-service teachers engage in. As the demographic of the U.S. of America changes, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 2043 minorities will become the majority, thus changing the terrain of American education. I am currently interested in these subjects: Critical Theory, Philosophy, Music Education, Teacher Preparation, Hip-Hop, Culturally Relevant Pedaogies and Social Justice or maintaining memberships in these organizations: National Association for Music Education (NAFME), Pi Kappa Lambda, NAACP, Kappa Kappa Psi (Delta Iota & Kappa Nu Chapters), John H.
