Do humans share one consciousness? This psychologist says yes. Clinical psychologist Lisa Miller rejects a materialist view of the brain as a factory producing thoughts. She believes that the brain might function more like an antenna — capable of sending and receiving consciousness, which holds information, love, and intelligence. In other words, consciousness can exist independently of matter. Miller highlights scientific research that has explored this idea of shared consciousness, particularly in bonded relationships and among twins. She emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity, where our actions and treatment of others leave lasting imprints on a collective consciousness field. Miller wants to redefine how we understand human consciousness and interconnectedness. This view of our minds has implications for fields such as psychology, neuroscience, and spirituality: by recognizing our shared consciousness, we can live a less lonely and more mindful shared existence. You can find Lisa's peer-reviewed research articles on her faculty page at the Teachers College - Columbia University website, here: https://www.tc.columbia.edu/faculty ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ❍ About The Well ❍ Do we inhabit a multiverse? Do we have free will? What is love? Is evolution directional? There are no simple answers to life's biggest questions, and that's why they're the questions occupying the world's brightest minds. So what do they think? How is the power of science advancing understanding? How are philosophers and theologians tackling these fascinating questions? Let's dive into The Well.

I first came across George Bonanno's work when I was struggling with the death of my Dad 10 years ago. His first book, the Other Side of Sadness helped me to reframe what I was experiencing in an incredibly helpful way and I have since bought it numerous times to comfort other people. One of the things I found most intriguing was how concepts such as the Kubler Ross model of the stages of grief are not actually scientifically founded. In other words we're clinging on to a model that is made up and doesn't actually reflect how most people respond. So, I was really excited to have the opportunity to speak to him. In this episode we talk about how resilience works and George's most recent book The End of Trauma (which in spite of the title is relevant to anyone and everyone). We discuss how normal resilience actually is and how our expectations of traumatic responses come from studying the more severe clinical cases rather than how the ‘average' person responds. George was not only in New York during the 9/11 attacks but actually went down to the site to help so he doesn't just speak from a scientific perspective but from one lived and breathed himself. But another perhaps surprising yet true fact is that we hugely over-estimated the number of people who would suffer from trauma even as a result of that horrific event. Why, well people are overwhelmingly resilient to adversity. What we often interpret as PTSD are signs of a natural process of learning how to deal with a specific situation. We can cope far more effectively if we understand how this process works, which we also discuss.  Bio - Dr. George Bonanno is a professor of psychology, chair of the department of counseling in clinical psychology, and director of the Loss, Trauma, and Emotion Lab at Teachers College Columbia University. Website: www.tc.columbia.edu/LTElab/Twitter: @giorgiobee  For more from me go to: https://fionamurden.comIf you are curious about who you are, your brain and the influences in your life then please dip into my more recent book Mirror Thinking – How Role Models Make Us Human. https://bit.ly/MirrThinkMy book Defining You - How to Build Your Unique Personal Profile and Unlock Your True Potential can be found at via these links and in all good book stores:https://bit.ly/DefiningYou2ndEd

Montgomery J. Granger is a three-time mobilized U.S. Army Reserve Major (Ret.), who was called into his Reserve Center in Uniondale (Long Island), New York, on 9/11, in response to the attacks on the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, which crashed at Shanksville, Pennsylvania. He answered his country's call to duty next in January 2002 for a mission to help run the military detention facility at the U.S. Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He was called up again just six months after returning from duty at Gitmo, but this time remained stateside at the U.S. Army Reserve Training Center at Fort Dix, New Jersey. After nearly six months at Fort Dix, MAJ Granger returned to civilian life for about a year when he was involuntarily transferred to another Reserve Army unit that was deploying to Iraq in the fall of 2004. Major Granger served 14 months of active duty on his third deployment and served in Baghdad, Abu Ghraib, Camp Bucca, and Ashraf, Iraq, as Medical Service officer for military detention facility operations. He is married and is the father of five children, and lives on Long Island, New York. He is also the author of "Theodore," a personal narrative published in the 2006 Random House wartime anthology "Operation Homecoming: Iraq, Afghanistan and the Home Front in the Words of U.S. Troops and Their Families," where he wrote about his fear and anxiety over having left his family in 2002, and especially two-day-old Theodore, and what reaction there was upon his return. Operation Homecoming was sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts, and edited by Andrew Carroll, editor of the New York Times bestselling book, War Letters. Granger was born in Illinois, raised and schooled in Rubidoux, California, and attended undergraduate school at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He earned a master's degree in curriculum and teaching from Teachers College-Columbia University, where he met his wife. He also attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook, where he earned professional credits to obtain a New York State School District Administrators' license. He is an accomplished coach and teacher of health and physical education, having taught in Alabama, California, New York City, and Long Island, before becoming a director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics. He was most recently Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, and then District Administrator for Operations for the Comsewogue school district in Port Jefferson Station, N.Y., and is now a Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics, and Director of Facilities for an Eastern Long Island school district. It's been a year since kids across the country left their classrooms and started learning from home. Many students find the virtual classroom a poor substitute for the real thing. And far too many families aren't properly equipped for remote learning, which only exacerbates the persistent social and racial inequities in education. Still, the pandemic is ushering in a new reliance on technology in education - and investors are betting tech only becomes more integral to the classroom.   On today's Brainstorm, hosts Michal Lev-Ram and Brian O'Keefe discuss the growth of education technology, and ask how well it works. Hardeep Gulati, CEO of PowerSchool, explains that the company's end-to-end platform serves not just students and teachers, but parents and administrators as well.   James Kim, a partner at Reach Capital – a venture capital firm focused on education – tells us about some of the innovations he's seeing from ed-tech startups.  Finally, Ellen Meier and Karen Kirsch Page of Teachers College Columbia University discuss the importance using technology to engage students in new ways, and how to best help teachers make the most of digital tools.

Hey everyone, On this week's episode of Supermom Rehab podcast I had the pleasure to speak with the Dr. Kisha Porcher, about how her as an educator and trainer of culturally-responsive education, has demonstrated the importance of teaching our kids to be unapologetically themselves in all spaces, especially in schools. And the best way to do this is to advocate for our kids and show them what it looks like to be ourselves. In this episode, we had a chance to discuss several things including: Changing our mindsets as women of color who have challenges from having deficits to having resilience Recognizing as moms that "we are enough" and the beneficial impact on our kids to show up as our authentic self The historical legacy of why black children are not allowed to be children (or their authentic self) and the challenge for moms The inherent bias that teachers may have on kids of color who are exhibiting normal childhood and adolescent behavior Advocating for our children of color in schools with predominantly white teachers, staff and leadership The power of mothering communally and sister circles Mentioned in this episode: Culturally-responsive education and the benefits The book by Bettina Love, “We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and The Pursuit of Educational Freedom” The History of HBCUs and Why They’re Still Important Today Don’t forget: Join my FREE virtual masterclass on November 17th: How Working Moms of Color Can Stop The Supermom Stress and Avoid Burnout Feeling stressed as a working mom? Her work focuses on the education, conditions and assets of urban communities and how she can aim to provide opportunities to fill the gap between what students are learning in teacher education programs and what is actually happening and being taught in urban schools. Dr. Porcher’s inspiration comes from her background of living and teaching in urban communities. It was always her passion and moral responsibility to serve her community. Once she realized that there was a gap in urban teacher education, she turned to her research to learn how she could effectively prepare students to teach in these communities. As an undergraduate student, Dr. Porcher studied English and Secondary Education at Spelman College, looking mostly at best practices for teaching in urban schools. She studied work around literacy and hip hop and the ways in which you can infuse them together to increase student achievement by using their cultural backgrounds to relate to them personally. Dr. Porcher then went on to earn her master’s degree in Curriculum and Teaching from the Teachers College Columbia University, where she focused more on culturally responsive curriculum writing. Additionally, Dr. Porcher went on the receive her Ph.D. in Teaching and Teacher Education from George Mason University.

Mike and Dan talk about positive psychology and the power of gratitude and hope. WorkHuman Live 2020Dan will share practical strategies for intentional self-care in his keynote at WorkHuman Live 2020. He says that deadlines and busy schedules make us forget to take care of ourselves. However, it’s intentional self-care that will boost our productivity. We need to recharge to work at our very best.  The Power of GratitudeMike asks Dan what are some simple things we can do to take care of ourselves. Dan responds that one simple practice that has powerful effects, is to do a 90-second gratitude review of the day before, every morning. Gratitude is wired into many performance elements, into our sense of self, into our feelings of joy and connectedness and relationship. Doing a gratitude review has the power to change your perspective of the day past, even though we have a natural negativity bias. American Snake PitDan relates how he helped deinstitutionalize Willowbrook, the worst asylum in American history. His experimental group home, which he says was designed to fail, helped his patients thrive. What he found was that once people are given the right opportunity, they flourish. Mike agrees that people need purpose in their work. Productivity increases when workers feel a sense of positivity, connection and purpose. Positive PsychologyDan shares three key resources for listeners to learn more about positive psychology. The Power of HopeMike asks about Dan’s Ask a Therapist section at PsychCentral.com. Dan says that they receive about 2500 questions a month, and what he sees most often is that people are looking for a sense of hope. He says that a large part of his responses are giving people something tangible to work on that will change their expectations of the future, which makes them more positive and energetic in their day to day functioning. She completed her undergraduate degree at the Arizona State University where she double majored in psychology and human development, then attended Teachers College Columbia University and earned two master's degrees (Ed.M., M.A.) in Psychological Counseling. Since then she has worked in a variety of settings providing mental health services and therapy to clients, and most recently co-founded Viva Wellness, a holistic wellness practice and company located in Brooklyn. When she's not working, you can find her running in Central Park and in every race possible, cheering on her sports teams, and planning the next time she's going to eat. Being an entrepreneur often sounds a bit more glamorous than it actually is, so we set out to learn more about Rachel Gersten’s experience as Co-founder of Viva Wellness. Reflecting on our question to discuss some of the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, Rachel explains, “Generally, we don’t share the struggle enough and that can lead to people having comparison issues, and especially with social media highlighting everything that looks pretty. But, no - we need to talk about the things that are hard too. The biggest thing I think for me, that I was not expecting, when transitioning into being an entrepreneur, is that I was prepared for the increased workload, I was prepared for work on the weekends, and days that are crazy. And I knew it would be a balancing act in terms of scheduling, but what I was not prepared for was the emotional toll of it because you can’t leave work at work anymore, you are work.” Joining us to share her story, Rachel talks about the connection between mental and physical wellness, using fitness as a tool for managing her chronic pain, lessons learned as an entrepreneur, and staying balanced by shifting the slices of the ‘pie’ that is life.

Funding for higher education in the U.S. is an increasingly divisive issue. Some states have turned to policies that tie institutional performance to funding appropriations so to have great accountability on public expenditure. In exploring the origins and implementation for these kinds of policies, Kevin Dougherty and Rebecca Natow recently published a new in-depth book on this topic, entitled The Politics of Performance Funding for Higher Education: Origins, Discontinuations, and Transformations (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2015). In the book, the authors have explored the origins of this policy, its effects on the landscape of American higher education, and its future. This publication weaves extensive policymaker, educator, and administer interviews to form a thorough picture of the nature and debates of these policies– from policy entrepreneurs to advocacy coalitions. They even explore comparisons to performance funding policies abroad. Games are increasingly seen as a way to address human needs, from the intimate work of maintaining social relationships to the pragmatic benefits of games for learning, health, and social change. If we hope to design games that address these needs, we must understand how people create meaning with, through, and around games. How do specific game design decisions impact the way players think, feel, and behave? What kinds of imaginative and social affordances can games provide players? And what kinds of problems are most appropriate to solve with games in the first place? This talk explores the complex interaction between game design, user experience, and real-world problems through the lens of game-based research projects on discrimination, smoking, and history. Jessica Hammer is a Mellon Interdisciplinary Graduate Research Fellow at Columbia University, a founding member of the Teachers College EGGPLANT game research laboratory and a member of the Creativity Research Group. She is the lead designer and researcher for the Advance game project, on which she is writing her dissertation. Her larger research interests include stories, games, communities, gender, creativity and learning. She also developed the game design course sequence for the Communications, Computing and Technology program at Teachers College Columbia University. Before joining the department, Jessica worked as a writer, consultant and game designer with an emphasis on serious games and social software. She has taught at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program, consulted for both academic and business clients, and worked at noted New York game company Gamelab. She received a masters degree in interactive telecommunications from NYU and her BA in computer science from Harvard University. In her free time, she runs an experimental storytelling group in New York City.
