Fred Laluyaux has spent 25 years on the same problem: enterprises are drowning in decisions no human should be making. With 50 million digitized decisions across companies like Unilever, Exxon, and Hershey, he now has the data to prove it. When operators override the machine, performance goes down. Not sometimes — in aggregate, every time. In this episode, Fred breaks down the agentic vs. deterministic tradeoff most CIOs are getting wrong, why the software stack most companies rely on today is heading for collapse, and what a company whose entire stack is just SAP and Aera tells you about where enterprise software is going. Hit play. 3 Takeaways: After 50 million digitized decisions, the data is clear: when operators override the machine, performance drops. One Aera customer runs their entire operation on SAP and Aera. Nothing in between. That's where the stack is going. Fred calls them "born in digital" decisions — they can't be made by humans because the value is gone before the meeting starts. Chapters: [03:08] Fred's Career Journey and Lessons Learned [05:17] Why Aera Was Created [05:45] The Vision for a Self-Driving Enterprise [08:28] The Decision Memory Problem in AI [10:28] The Reality of AI ROI [11:58] From Analytics to Decision Intelligence [12:56] Humans vs Fully Autonomous Systems [15:28] What It Means to Digitize Decisions [18:42] How Aera Actually Works [22:42] Trust, Governance, and the Waymo Analogy [27:51] Deterministic vs Agentic AI [29:13] The Cloud Capacity Wake-Up Call [30:15] Where Aera Fits in the Enterprise Stack [31:54] Fast ROI and the “4-4-4” Framework [32:55] Why the Software Stack Is Collapsing [36:21] Delayering Organizations and New AI Roles [39:02] Born-Digital Companies and Micro-Decisions [43:57] Explainability, Governance, and Feedback Loops About Fred:  Fred Laluyaux is Co-Founder, President, and CEO of Aera Technology, the leader in decision intelligence and creator of Aera, the first decision intelligence agent. An entrepreneur and Silicon Valley veteran, Fred brings an impressive track record building successful startups and driving technology innovation. Prior to launching Aera, Fred was the CEO of Anaplan, which he grew to a $1 billion valuation. He has held several executive positions at SAP, Business Objects, and ALG Software. As a thought leader on the future of work and host of the Decision Intelligence podcast, Fred frequently shares his vision with influencers through media interviews and speaking engagements at industry conferences. His views have been published in business and trade publications. A technology and startup advisor, Fred is an investor and active board member of several startups in the U.S. and Europe. Guest Highlights: "We're in 2026, and the reality is that our models have not changed for 100 years. We're still relying on people to decide how to forecast, how to allocate inventory, how to change a plan." "We've got enough data, I mentioned the 50 million decisions, to demonstrate that whenever the humans are touching the system and are messing with the recommendation, they actually degrade the performance." "The autonomy is not another version or better version of my planning tool or my replenishment tool. It replaces the need to have a human touch with that software, and therefore I don't need that software anymore." How can teacher educators build spaces “outside the system” for critical, community-engaged, and personal work? As members of our Writing & Literacies and broader AERA communities travel to LA for this year's AERA annual conference, we invite you to download this Soundcloud exclusive episode for your travel day. Joining us on this episode of Inquiring Minds are two scholars and teacher educators who live and work in the greater Los Angeles area. From California State Dominguez Hills, professors Stephanie Cariaga and Edward Curammeng discuss teacher education at the intersections of critical literacies, ethnic studies, and trauma-informed perspectives on healing. Stephanie Cariaga has served the wider Los Angeles community for about two decades as an English teacher, founding member of the People's Education Movement, and is now an associate professor in teacher education at California State University Dominguez Hills. She is the founder of CrEW — Critical Embodied Wellness for Educators — a space of refuge, restoration, and resistance that supports radical educators to teach and lead from the wisdom of their whole selves. Her teaching and research seek to reintegrate the mind, body, and spirit into classrooms and beyond to cultivate spaces of truth-feeling and healing with marginalized students and educators. She is inspired by many teachers, including Black and Brown feminist world-makers, her ancestors, CrEW co-conspirators, and most of all: her children Laila and Lino. Edward R. Curammeng (Ph.D., Education, UCLA) is an Associate Professor in the College of Education and Graduate Program Director for the MA in Education at California State University, Dominguez Hills. His teaching and research interests include Ethnic Studies Education and critical race theory in education to examine the experiences of students and teachers of color. His scholarship has been published in Review of Educational Research, Teacher Education Quarterly and Journal of Asian American Studies. Upon transferring from Ohlone College, he earned his BA and MA in Asian American Studies from San Francisco State University where he taught middle and high school Filipino American and Ethnic Studies with Pin@y Educational Partnerships. Curammeng is the Project Director and Principal Investigator for the U.S. Department of Education funded Multilingual/Minoritized Educators Networked-Learning and Development (MEND) project.

Ted is an anthropologist of education with a primary scholarly focus on the interface between education policy and practice. He is author/editor of 14 books/monographs/journal special issues and has published almost 100 journal articles and book chapters. In 2019, Hamann served as a Fulbright Garcia-Robles U.S. Scholar at the Tijuana campus of the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional studying binational higher education collaborations that were intended to better prepare educators in both the United States and Mexico. He is an AERA fellow of the American +Education Research Association and a NEPC fellow at the National Education Policy Center.Ted tells us education is an aspect of anthropology because it is the way peoples have decided to pass on their humanity. Ted's work looks at education through the lens of anthropological methods at investigating what is going on in classrooms, in teacher education, in teaching communities, and so on. The imagining of who we are, such as Tara's quest in EDUCATED, is partially an anthropological question. We delve into what education means, in general, and what it meant to Tara. Linny was mostly interested in what happened outside the classroom, but Nancy keeps insisting what happens in the classroom mattered. Ted acknowledges that "school" is helpful to some but it can also be harmful. Tara brought a unique perspective, as well as a unique set of assets to her college experience. In fact, though difficult, her learned self-reliance and persistence were likely crucial to her eventual success. Linny is skeptical that most students have the sort of engaging and life-changing experience that Tara did, and that Ted and Nancy keep talking about. She just wanted to get through school so she won't have to work in a factory! Eventually, she does talk about her Master's education and how that mattered. Ted agrees that the voluntariness and the reason for being in a classroom matters. Tara had a good reason to be in those classrooms. Ted tells us about his research in school as a community and teacher recruitment from within difficult to staff schools.

Joining us this week on Select is Peter Al-Khabout, aka PAK, an emerging selector who has been recently making noise in the electronic music scene across Syria and Lebanon with his genre-blurring sets, packed with bold track selection and unexpected twists. For our Select the 330th, PAK takes us on a deep hypnotic journey of fresh grooves, heavy basslines, and dramatic, but also euphoric, buildups. His mix moves through lush house, relentless techno and atmospheric electronica. Think Dorisburg's deep textures layered up with DJ Koze's serpentine-like twists, and a dash of the driving energy of Ben Block. The set features a selection of eclectic tunes such as Shiffer's ‘Magnum', Aera's ‘Running Hot' and Luke Alessi's ‘Walk On By'.

Sage Cook and Aera Fox have been together for eleven years. Currently, the two have chosen to settle down and farm over touring frequently, with Cook estimating that music takes up only 20% of their average time budget now. Relatively soon after meeting, though, the band WE DREAM DAWN came together purely by chance. When a friend of Cook's booked him and other friends for a benefit, Cook asked Fox to learn the material on the bass. After performing with drummer Weston Hill, they all formed the three-piece group. Ultimately, the duo Sage and Aera is a spin-off of WE DREAM DAWN, allowing the two title performers to emphasize a quieter, more intimate sound.  Thank you for listening to The Mountain-Ear podcast featuring the news and culture from peak to peak.
