We kick the show off with returning guest, Johnny Catalano of The Plaza Theatre and the Catalano Film Festival to talk about an upcoming event we're putting on, where I will be hosting a screening of the fun 1996 movie, "The Frighteners!" Don't worry, we'll be back after we chat with St. Elmo's at the end of the episode to dive into more nerdy film stuff. Speaking of, we finally get Tyler from St. Elmo's on the show. St. Elmo Steak House has been a landmark in downtown Indianapolis since 1902. It is the oldest Indianapolis steakhouse in its original location, and has earned a national reputation for its excellent steaks, seafood, chops and professional service. They now have a huge line of products that we carry here at Jungle Jim's, from their incredible cocktail sauce, all the way to their new line of ready-to-drink cocktails and spirits! Their espresso martini was a huge hit in the office, and I can't say enough great things about their sauces. Shout out to their Root Beer Glaze, which we did not feature on this episode, even though I love it too much. As promised, Johnny and I return to chat about Peter Jackson and how he went from being a weird indie director, rising through the failure of The Frighteners, only to turn around and make the Lord of the Rings trilogy. All over a delicious glass of St. Elmo's Elmo Cola. All that and more on the Jungle Jim's Podcast!

George W. Carver Theatre | Teatro Rey | La Plaza TheatreIn Galveston, the Martini family is a household name. These days the Martini name can be found on 21st and Church Street on the old Martini theater, and here, just west of Rosenberg Avenue on Market Street. At one point, the Martini family owned eight theaters, one of them was opened in Galveston‘s Black Business District. The George W. Carver theater opening in 1940 the Martini family opened this theater specifically for African-American audiences the area north of Broadway and west of Rosenberg Avenue was Galveston‘s Black Business District in the times of racial segregation. The George W Carver theater operated for 19 years until 1959, when Mateo Vela buys the theater and converts to Spanish language films directed at Hispanic audiences. Mateo names the theatre Teatro Rey. In the 1970s, the theater changed hands and was briefly named the La Plaza theater until it closed in 1979. The shell of this theater today stands as a reminder of segregation, marginalization, and eventual racial integration. A stepping stone to a past that is not so far behind us.Interested in information covered in this episode? The number of film festivals has exploded in the past 10 years. More than 2,000 are staged around the world, dedicated to women directors, Japanese film, hip-hop and countless other themes. As testament to that intense festival growth, this year the 46-year-old Atlanta Film Festival (ATLFF) received 10,000 entries. Following a hybrid model, this year's Atlanta Film Festival will return to indoor screenings at the Plaza Theatre and Dad's Garage, and also feature special outdoor screenings at the Carter Center and the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Viewers can choose to see films virtually or in-person, or a combination of both. On this week's podcast, Felicia Feaster will bring us her conversation with the directors of one of the fest's films, “Refuge,” which is set in Clarkston. Learn more about your ad choices. Located in the Briarcliff Plaza shopping center, now branded Plaza on Ponce, the Plaza Theatre is the only independently owned movie theater remaining inside the Perimeter and the longest continuously operating one of its kind in Atlanta. Christopher Escobar, 35, purchased the Plaza in 2017 and recently signed a 25-year lease with Asana Partners, who bought the shopping center five years ago. Despite the societal challenges working against him — the rise of streaming, the pandemic, fancy multiplexes — he sees a pathway to make the Plaza even more of a neighborhood magnet, a community hub, a gathering spot. And he has big plans. Rodney Ho spoke with Escobar about those plans and the future of the Plaza Theatre for this week's podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What do you do when you have stay-at-home orders during a pandemic? Adapt where you can. Brigitte and Hannah Cranfill decided to sign up for an online screenwriting class in April 2020 through the Atlanta Film Society. This is where they met - virtually - along with another student, Esha. Hannah suggested to write a short-film and submit it to a "locals only" screening. Esha and Brigitte didn't hesitate. The theme of the short-film screening for 2020 is called "So Bad, It's Good." As a team, they co-wrote, produced, and directed a short-film...literally at home and updated each other weekly through Zoom calls. The short-film created is called "Adaptations", was produced in less than 6 weeks, and t was unexpectedly selected for screening in Atlanta. It's amazing what you can accomplish working creatively with others. It was definitely a "So Bad, It's Good" situation. The in-person screening was a drive-in at the Plaza Theatre's parking lot in July. We're still waiting to find out from the Atlanta Film Society when the virtual screening will happen, so others can participate, view and vote. FYI - The next online screenwriting class is in October with Kathy Berardi as the instructor.
Lois Reitzes interviews director Wayne Patterson and actors Bethany Anne Lind as well as E. Roger Mitchell about the film "Second Samuel"; Chris Escobar about the Plaza Theatre's drive-in screenings; and Pam Redmon of Emory's Global Health Institute as well as authors Beth Bacon and Kary Lee, winners of the COVID-19 children's book competitionheld by Emory University
Lois Reitzes talks with Alex Wan about Horizons Summer Camp; Christopher Escobar about the Plaza Theatre showing drive-in movies; and Cicely Garret as well as playwright Amina McIntyre about Equitable Dinners Atlanta.
Georgia has confirmed more than 24,000 cases of COVID-19 and tallied close to 1,000 deaths from the disease. However, Governor Brian Kemp is still allowing a number of the state’s businesses to reopen this week, citing an increased capacity for testing and hospitalizations. Employers, for their part, have been left in a lurch. How do small business owners reopen? Should they? And, if an owner chooses to remain shuttered, can it count on the government for help? Among the small businesses shuttered by shelter-in-place orders are two of Georgia’s historic art-house theaters. How are these independent cinemas surviving, and innovating, now that their screens have gone dark? Christopher Escobar, owner of Atlanta’s Plaza Theatre and executive director of the Atlanta Film Society, said that business had already been slowing down for about two weeks prior to their closing. And Pamela Kohn, executive director of Ciné in Athens, said their decision to shut down the theater was difficult, but necessary.

On this week's episode of Whoreible Decisions, the duo are joined by stripper activist and forefront of the #StripperStrike Gizelle Marie. The show delves into live as a stripper, the idea of unionizing strippers and giving them benefits along with what it's like to date while being in the adult entertainment industry. Things got alittle tense between Mandii and the guest this week as she felt the need to stand up for the bartender slander since she once was apart of this life as well. Do you think strippers should get benefits? Do you think Gizelle Marie will make strides in her Stripper Strike movement? Leave comments below.
