Stephen Gordon's bio "I fell in love with all the sounds I heard as a child, so I pursued them" says Drummer/Pianist/Composer STEPHEN GORDON of Charlotte, N.C. - "Rather it was Gospel music at church, Funk and Motown with my Dad, Rock and Metal with my friends, Swing or European Classical literature with my peers and colleagues - I did it all." From the age of 4 years old, it became apparent that young Stephen would emerge into the world bringing forth sound, art, visual perspectives and living melodies to all that he pursued. Through the piano, taking lessons from the age of 5 with many teachers of different perspectives at the guidance of his parents and family, Stephen began playing the trumpet at age 12, which ventured into all brass, woodwinds, and eventually the drums and percussion. "They wanted to expand the Mass Choir at church, so my Dad and I became the rhythm section - That will always be my favorite rhythm section: Me and my Dad." From traditional and contemporary Gospel music, Stephen began sitting in and eventually gigging around Charlotte as a drummer and a keyboardist. "It was the Swing that I heard that I wanted to pursue. When I saw Terence Blanchard Sextet live at 15 years old, I said - Yeah, that's what I want to do; Swing." This path would lead Stephen to graduate high school from Northwest School of The Arts in Charlotte, N.C. and pursue touring and traveling internationally/nationally. "I got so many opportunities to travel with the choir, that when it came to gigging and touring with bands and my friends, I didn't see a difference; I was still going after that sound." These opportunities would lead to Stephen traveling and living in many different places and playing with some of the musicians and educators pushing the forefront of this music - pianist Ellis Marsalis, Jr., drummer Mike Clark, organist Joey DeFrancesco, trombonist Wayne Henderson, trombonist Fred Wesley, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, alto saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr., percussionist Bill Summers, drummer/vibraphonist Jason Marsalis, alto saxophonist Wessell Anderson, vocalist Kurt Elling, pianist Aaron Goldberg, trumpeter Bobby Shew, trombonist Steve Turre, trumpeter Raymond Williams, Sr., bassist Roland Guerin, Poet Abidune Olyewole (The Last Poets), trombonist Tyrone Jefferson - to name a few. Stephen has performed in venues such as Tchaichovsky Hall in Moscow, Russia, The National Concert Hall in Taipei City, Taiwan, Opéra Bastille in Paris, France, The Kursk Philharmonia in Kursk, Russia, Lincoln Center in New York, New York, Ronnie Scott's in London, England, C Venues in Edinburgh, Scotland, The Village Vanguard, The Blue Note and The Jazz Standard in New York, New York, Blues Alley in DC, Babylon in Istanbul, Turkey, The North Sea Jazz Festival in Amsterdam, and many other great venues across the world. Beside playing and touring, recording and teaching have been prospects for Stephen to share in his talents and learn and grow as a musician and as a person. As Stephen resides in Charlotte, N.C., you may catch him all over the world on any given day, swinging and grooving. Greg Ward is a saxophonist and composer that was born in Peoria, IL. Currently based in Chicago, Ward has had the opportunity to perform and record with a varied group of artists like Prefuse 73, Lupe Fiasco, Tortoise, William Parker, Andrew D'Angelo, and Mike Reed. In 2000, Ward began his studies at Northern Illinois University where he worked with Steve Duke, Fareed Haque, Ron Carter, and Joey Sellers. Already interested in composition, having the opportunity to compose for NIU's jazz combos deepened his understanding of the inner-workings of music. Also, working with composer and arranger, Joey Sellers, equipped Ward with some important tools to further explore this new love. Around his sophomore year in college, Ward started spending many nights performing in the jazz clubs of Chicago. Soon, he would meet another one of his mentors, saxophonist, Fred Anderson, who would later select him to host a jam session at the Velvet Lounge for four years. During this time period, Ward experienced much growth as a performer and composer and developed a vibrant community of performers, artists, dancers, and listeners. After graduating from NIU in 2004 with a degree in Jazz Studies/Saxophone Performance, Ward moved to Chicago and took advantage of every opportunity that was offered to him. Composing two pieces for the International Contemporary Ensemble, performing a quartet composition for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's Chamber Music Series, composing Wings for the Peoria Ballet Company, and being commissioned by the Jazz Institute of Chicago for a new composition, which was performed at the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2009, are just a few of the many experiences that shaped Ward during his years in Chicago. In 2009, Ward decided to move to New York City. Almost immediately after he arrived in NYC, he began working with JazzReach, an NYC-based jazz education organization that shares multi-media programs throughout the US. In 2010, he would produce his first CD as a leader with his Chicago-based band, Fitted Shards. South Side Story received much critical acclaim, including "Recording of the Year" by the Chicago Tribune. Next, in 2011, Ward formed Phonic Juggernaut, which features Damion Reid on drums and Joe Sanders on bass. Together, they recorded and released a CD on Thirsty Ear Recordings that same year. Also, in 2011, Ward composed and performed a commission from the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra for a concerto for jazz quartet and string orchestra. In 2012, Ward was selected as one of the two New Music USA Van Lier Fellows. In 2014, he received a commission/residency from the Jazz Gallery and premiered Capturing Sunlight, which was an hour-long work for septet and included a short documentary by Diana Quinones Rivera. The Capturing Sunlight project was inspired by the life and work of Preston Jackson. Recently, Ward has collaborated with another composer, sound designer, and performer, Caleb Willitz. First, they composed the film score for Beresford Bennett's film, Pinch, which was an official selection of the 2015 San Diego Black Film Festival. Second, Ward and Willitz will be releasing an electro-acoustic project, Gaps and Spaces: Synoptic Optiks. My name is Jarritt Ahmed Sheel, and I am an artist who just wants to place all of the yearnings & desires given to him by the Lord... on the canvas of humanity. I love playing music and doing my art to the best of my ability! I love cooking, traveling, learning, teaching, and most of all performing in front of others. I am a musician(trumpet) who is really into Gospel, Funk, Jazz, Punk, Reggae and most of all HIP-HOP! One day soon I look forward to opening up a community based arts school that focuses on learning that revolves around the discussion of freedom and democracy, through experiences with Hip-Hop and Jazz. I am really interested in family and making it and God the center point of my life. I recently accepted an assistant professor of music education position at the Berklee College of Music, and I am a Ed.D. candidate in music & music education at Teachers College, Columbia University. I attended Florida A&M University where I attained my B.S. in Music Performance, Northern Illinois University for my M.M. in Jazz Studies and I recently achieved my Ed.M. in Music & Music Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. My research interests are focused on the intersections that occur between hip-hop and music education. I am a huge fan of critical theory (CRT & Whiteness Theory) and follow the writings of Stephen Brookfield, Steven Preskill, Michel Foucault, Cornel West, Maxine Greene and Roland Barthes. I find that critical theory is becoming increasingly more relevant in music education's march toward progress. I am interested in investigating teacher preparation and the performance experiences that pre-service teachers engage in. As the demographic of the U.S. of America changes, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 2043 minorities will become the majority, thus changing the terrain of American education. I am currently interested in these subjects: Critical Theory, Philosophy, Music Education, Teacher Preparation, Hip-Hop, Culturally Relevant Pedaogies and Social Justice or maintaining memberships in these organizations: National Association for Music Education (NAFME), Pi Kappa Lambda, NAACP, Kappa Kappa Psi (Delta Iota & Kappa Nu Chapters), John H. Tenor saxophonist Nate Lepine has been a regular fixture of the Chicago jazz, improvised music and rock scenes since the early 1990s. Known to date primarily for his work as a go-to sideman, he has appeared on over three dozen recordings by a wide range of artists including indie mainstays Cursive and Iron and Wine, and alt rock outfit Poi Dog Pondering. While ably lending his instrumental voice to these and many other popular projects, Lepine, whose true calling is jazz, has spent years cultivating his own music, building a repertoire of original compositions and performing frequently on the circuit of Chicago jazz clubs as an improviser. In the fall of 2014, the time had come to document the culmination of those efforts, and Lepine assembled a first-rate quartet to record ten of his compositions at Strobe Studio in Chicago. The result of that two day session is his long awaited debut album as a bandleader, Vortices. The musicians Lepine chose to help him realize his vision – alto saxophonist Nick Mazzarella (Nick Mazzarella Trio), bassist Clark Sommers (Kurt Elling, BaSH) and drummer Quin Kirchner (Wilde Belle, NOMO) – were selected from the community of fiercely talented players that thrive in Chicago’s active jazz and improvised music scene. Each is a bandleader in his own right, and together they display uncommon versatility in their interpretation of Lepine’s eclectic originals. The quartet plays with a balance of virtuosity and soul all too rare in modern jazz, and Lepine has left plenty of room for each musician to contribute his personality to the material, while leading the way with his own distinctive, vocal-like tenor sound. There is a diverse array of musical content throughout Vortices, from carefully crafted counterpoint, to bass-driven grooves and catchy horn riffs, to freely improvised passages. This variety reflects Lepine’s aesthetic, which is informed by his travels as a journeyman, his devotion to the art and craft of playing the saxophone, and a passion for the jazz idiom itself. Lepine brings to bear his many years of experience in the music industry on this first offering under his own name, and it is plain to hear the wait was worth it.
