In March, we recorded an episode live on stage at SXSW EDU in Austin, Texas. This disagreement is all about ESAs, or Education Savings Accounts. You may have heard of ESAs under a different name, like vouchers or school choice programs. Right now, 18 states have some sort of ESA program in place. The programs are becoming more popular across the country, but should they be? What accounts for the increasing support for ESAs? What risks and benefits do they pose for students and families? Does the rise of ESAs inherently harm our public schools? When we say ESAs, we are NOT talking about 529 plans or other college savings programs. We're talking about K-12 education. These programs create a government-authorized savings account for families, allowing them to take some quantity of the funding that would have supported their child in public school, and use those dollars in the way they see fit: whether that's to supplement private school tuition, parochial school tuition, tutoring, special needs services or for other educational purposes.Shaka Mitchell is a Senior Fellow at the American Federation for Children, an advocacy organization in the school choice movement. He has served in leadership roles at high-performing charter school networks, including Rocketship Education and LEAD Public schools in Nashville.Jaime Puente is the Director of Economic Opportunity at Every Texan, an advocacy and public policy organization striving to expand opportunities for all Texans. He currently oversees their work on education. Previously, Jaime served as Legislative Director for members of the Texas House of Representatives. This episode is moderated by The Disagreement's co-host and co-founder Catherine Cushenberry.Sign up for our newsletter at thedisagreement.substack.com

Creating better pathways to economic mobility for immigrants

Work In Progress

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 8, 2025 52:33

In this episode of Work in Progress, we dive into the significant contribution that immigrants and foreign-born workers already make to our economy and explore ways to create better pathways to economic mobility through education and training. In March, at SXSW EDU in Austin, WorkingNation brought together business, education, and nonprofit leaders for a discussion on the subject. Joining me on stage at the conference were Katie Brown, founder and chief education officer for EnGen; Jina Krause-Vilmar, CEO of Upwardly Global; and Arturo Cázares, CEO of Latino Business Action Network. There are 47.8 million immigrants in our country. That's about 14% of the population. One in five workers in our country is an immigrant. Immigrants and foreign-born workers generate trillions in economic activity and tax revenue. Economists argue that reducing immigration could have a major negative impact on GDP growth. The immigrant workforce is diverse, touching every industry and community. Immigrants have a range of educational and skill levels, from low-wage workers to entrepreneurs to highly-educated professionals. And there are barriers to economic mobility for all levels of the immigrant population. These hurdles include lack of English skills, difficulties getting professional credentials and qualifications earned in other countries recognized in the U.S., lack of access to capital, and lack of access to career navigation and support services. My conversation with Brown, Krause-Vilmar, and Cázares looks at those barriers and what is being done to break them down for the contribution by immigrants to our economic growth can be even greater. The podcast here also includes the lively discussion with the audience members who joined us in the room. My thanks to the panelists and the audience, and to SXSW EDU for giving us the stage for this important conversation. I also want to share my gratitude and thanks to my colleague Laura Aka for bringing this panel together and sharing her insights and knowledge with us on the subject. I encourage everyone to take the time to listen. You can listen to the full podcast here or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also find our podcasts on the Work in Progress YouTube channel. How to Identify Student-Centered Colleges: Key Insights with Elliot Felix

In this episode, Lisa and Elliot discuss:How to identify truly student-centered colleges beyond marketing claimsThe impact of well-connected campus services on student successWhy experiential learning is essential for career readinessThe hidden challenges of higher education that students and families should knowKey Takeaways: Colleges with one-stop shops simplify administrative challenges by consolidating financial aid, registration, and advising services into a single location, reducing confusion and delays for students.Libraries that function as academic support hubs provide students with integrated resources like writing centers, tutoring, research support, and maker spaces, ensuring easy access to essential learning tools.Experiential learning centers are crucial because hands-on experiences like internships, co-ops, and industry certifications (e.g., HubSpot, Salesforce) offer more career value than additional majors or minors. While well-designed campus apps can streamline student services, too many uncoordinated digital tools create confusion, making it harder for students to navigate resources effectively. “Experiential learning is one of these great opportunities where one plus one makes 11—it's because you build skills but also a network...you're talking to real people with real problems that you get experience solving, and then—through that work—those projects become part of your portfolio.” – Elliot FelixAbout Elliot Felix: Elliot Felix is an author, speaker, teacher, father, and consultant to over 100 colleges, using his design background to improve campus spaces, support services, and technology.Over 20 years, he has spoken at SxSW Edu, taught innovation courses, and worked with top universities like Carnegie Mellon, MIT, NYU, NC State, and UVA, improving the experience of over 1,000,000 students. His work appears in Fast Company, Forbes, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. His book How to Get the Most Out of College (2022) earned a blue star from Kirkus Reviews, calling it “A knowledgeable, enthusiastic guide packed with strategies and encouragement.”His upcoming book, The Connected College: Leadership Strategies for Student Success, arrives in early 2025.Episode References:Episode #068 How to Get the Most Out Of College with Elliot FelixGet Lisa's Free on-demand video: How-to guide for your teen to choose the right major, college, & career...(without painting themselves into a corner, missing crucial deadlines, or risking choices you both regret). flourishcoachingco.com/video Connect with Elliot:Twitter: https://x.com/elliotfelixTikTok: http://www.tiktok.com/@elliot_felixYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcP8dIfoC28OJH7rgdCKmmAInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/elliotfelix/Website: https://www.elliotfelix.com/Connect with Lisa:Website: https://www.flourishcoachingco.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@flourishcoachingcoInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/flourishcoachingco/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/flourish-coaching-co

In her mind, there are two major differences between the capacity of human beings and that of AI: 1) original, new thought and 2) the capacity to feel. While AI is extremely useful for everyday life, it is reliant upon information that already exists in the form. Humans, on the other hand, have access to ideas that don't yet exist in the form, making us a conduit for true innovation. We also have a built-in biofeedback mechanism that alerts us to how we are using our minds – our feelings. If robots have you feeling stupid or irrelevant, tune in to hear how your system design is actually quite spectacular.

It allows everyone to find success and reach their full potential. We acknowledge the challenges of implementing purposeful play, but we emphasize the importance of engaging with the information, discussing it, and using ideas in different ways. Learn how to be a link, while busting silos across the K12 ecosystem. The panelists, who first met serendipitously at the prior year's SXSW EDU, explore the problems caused by working in isolation and offer solutions for bridging disparate worlds. They advocate creating networked improvement communities, fostering authentic connections through presence and effective communication, and prioritizing the crucial work of humanizing diverse stakeholders. Punam stresses meeting parents where they are by providing vocabulary and support. DeShanna shares powerful stories of cultivating trust through home visits and communicating in families' native languages. Dana suggests stakeholder groups, documenting processes, empathy interviews to shape school culture, and valuing the "unsexy" moments that truly build community. With vulnerability, passion and decades of frontline experience, the panelists make a clarion call for a paradigm shift - moving away from inefficient siloing towards meaningful collaboration that embraces the strengths of students, teachers, parents and communities. We explore his motivational, step-by-step methodology that breaks down the process into simple, actionable steps that engage both parents and children. Here's the link to the video referenced in the episode. Spencer emphasizes the importance of giving clear directions to kids instead of asking questions or making statements.
