Paul speaks to King Agrippa and all the royal court. As is typical to Paul, he is not defending himself but rather giving the gospel message to everyone.  Paul explains that he was once persecuting Christians but now changed because of Jesus Christ.  Jesus accuses Paul of "kicking against the goad" which is a prodding by the Lord. Do we see people today who have the same faults as the Pharisees? Are there ten lost tribes of Israel?  How does Paul's approach apply to us today? Are we guilty of resisting God's guidance to us? Support the show

Have you ever seen something miraculous? This week Kent delves into how often those who see the miraculous are those who serve. Free cruise, how does it get better than that? Except I was a teenager - like a seriously moody grumpy teenager. This meant I was going to miss a week and a half of being with my buddies. It meant I was going to miss going to church camp. You ever heard don't look a gift horse in the mouth? I didn't just look it in the mouth, I literally shoved my whole head in. I was full-on teenage angst. I knew going on that trip would ruin my life. I knew all the best things in the world were going to happen during that week and a half. I fought my parents, told my grandparents I didn't want to go to the Bahamas. I was SO mad! (because I'm dumb… :) Literally, we are in Florida ready to get on the boat, and I'm still feeling like I'm forced to do something I don't want to do… You ever felt that? -you have protested over and over again that your company doesn't need to be spending time and resources on that new project and your boss tells you to suck it up and do it anyway? -your parents force you to do something that everything in you didn't want to do? We all know what it's like to be put in a position where you feel like you HAVE to do something you don't want to Did you know Jesus knows what that's like? Check this out, in a second we are going to look at a time when Jesus was force to do something He didn't want to do, I'll show you something that blew me away, and then we'll swing it around to what do we do next… John 2:1-12 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” Jewish weddings are not what we are used to. They had two parts, the betrothal - the husband and the father of the bride would set a price the husband would pay to the family and the bride. The father would determine if he thought the man would be a good fit for his daughter and then he would pour a glass of wine, if his daughter drank the wine, it meant she approved and if she didn't, it meant she didn't approve. After this point, the couple was legally married, even though they didn't live together or consulate the marriage… The groom would go off to prepare a place for him and his wife. This would take up to a year before he'd come back for her. And when he did, she and her bridesmaids needed to be ready (I couldn't find any information on this, but I think they must have known a general time frame for when it would occur because guests were invited). They would keep lamps trimmed and ready. The bridegroom's friends would blow a shofar horn - he would go with the party through the streets and get his bride. They would all come back and have the wedding ceremony. All the guests would be there - they would party and celebrate for days - often times up to a week. This is where we find Jesus, at the wedding of this bride and groom… -He and His mom have both been invited to the wedding, along with his disciples… And this couple has run out of wine. I've wondered why Mary gets involved with it, does she know the family well? Is she worried about this young woman about to be embarrassed by the fact that they'v run out - Mary herself knew what it was like to be embarrassed as a young betrothed woman - because of being pregnant with Jesus… Whatever the reason, it seems we find ourselves in the middle of the moment where Mary, Jesus, & the servants know there is no more wine, but it hasn't gotten out to the master of the banquet… -they are probably scurrying, everyone trying to see if there is any other solution and Mary comes to Jesus… 4 “Woman,[a] why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” Jesus calling his mom “woman” seems derogatory in our culture, but would have been seen as simply an informal way of speaking to her… ILLUSTRATION: A few weeks ago, we had my mom's surprise 70th birthday party. I had such a hard time not spilling the beans. I'm terrible at keeping secrets. I kept being worried I'd accidentally let out what was going on… Jesus is worried that Mary is going to put His mission in jeopardy because she wants to fix this problem, but Jesus is super specific about what He will do and when He will do it… It cracks me up, because This passage rings so true to life. Mary doesn't answer Jesus' complaint - she just moves on with her plan. listen… 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.[b] These would have been special jars - used for the family to wash their hands to be ceremonially pure. Likely a priest's family. -stone jars were used because they were considered pure -clay had to be thrown out every year. -they would have been expensive - thus priest - enough money for the jars, but not for enough wine for the celebration 7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. 120-180 gallons of wine… 2,400 servings of wine -Jesus is being extravagant - they won't run out… 8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.” It was typical to start off with the good stuff when people were drinking lots… ILLUSTRATION: When I was in Israel we celebrated Shabbat (sabbath) with our rabbis - they bought wine for everyone, but when the wine ran out, everyone started drinking the cheap wine the hotel provided. The same is true for weddings in ancient Israel. The master of the banquet is surprised because the wine is SO good, normally it would be watered down and not the good stuff.. 11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. 12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days. So, maybe you're sitting there going, OK Kent, thanks for the History lesson, but so what? To be honest, this story has always been a bit of a conundrum for me. I never gave it much thought, until I heard an older preacher say something that really stuck out to me… Let me point it out to you… I want to read you a section of this again: 8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. b The only people who saw the miracle were the servants… b This is often the way with Jesus. b When you are near the work of God you see the wonders of God ILLUSTRATION: I've seen this in my own life. I've been on missions trips where our vehicle breaks down in the middle of Arizona - all the kids filed off the bus and gathered around it in a circle and prayed. The guy driving got back on and turned the key and the vehicle started back up and drove fine the rest of the trip. I've seen God just show up in ministries and provide when we had nothing. Our first Christmas at our church plant - we had $15,000 in debt on our own personal credit cards. I was sitting there stressing about it and waiting to get up and preach and had a woman walk up and hand me an envelope and she said, “Merry Christmas”. I opened the envelope and it had $20,000 in it. I've seen very sick people be prayed over and experience a full recovery. My wife was doing mission work in Africa and witnessed a blind man receive sight. These things don't happen every day But we'd never have experienced them if we weren't staying near the work of God. CLOSING ILLUSTRATION: I ended up going on that trip with my family for the cruise. For the first few days, I was still all grumpy about it. But pretty soon, I realized that this was a pretty cool experience. And as I've looked back I've realized more and more how amazing it was. I got to spend that time with my grandparents and my entire family. I got to go to the beaches of Nasa and ride in a crazy taxi with my grandparents. I got to talk over meals with my grandpa and spend time with my family. I got to see the open seas and swim in the most amazing waters. I got to listen to a steel drum band on the shores. I got to experience things I never would have. But if I had stayed in that place where I was, I would never have experienced it. Can I ask you a question? Do you experience the wonders of God in your life? b My guess is, if you aren't seeing the wonders of God in your life, you probably aren't staying close to the work of God. If you keep doing what you've always done, you'll get the results you've always gotten… Look, serving sounds worse than it is. Serving is really about taking your giftedness and passions and connecting them to the mission of God and giving yourself away. b That's why we are doing the 90 Days of Service Challenge b We want to challenge you to join the challenge to take your giftedness and passions, connect them with God's mission (we'll help you with this), and give 90 Days to serving God to see what God will do! b After 90 Days, you can keep going if you've found your fit, you can try something different to find your fit, or you can take a break. b There's no pressure, we just want you to experience the wonders of God and that takes being near the work of God - it takes getting on the boat…

SHOW NOTES: We will never love or trust or believe whom we do not know. Do you know Jesus? Whatever you are struggling with - Jesus has the answer because Jesus IS the answer. TODAY'S CHALLENGE: Get a bible you can read and understand… and then read it. If you’ve never read the Bible before—start with something you can understand. Get a children’s story bible. I’m not even kidding. If you’re not familiar with the Bible then start by doing a quick read of a children’s bible to get a an overview of the story of God and get you going deeper from there. The Catherine Vos Child’s Story Bible is a good one, or The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd Jones is great; it tells the gospel in the sweetest way with great pictures.   Setlist: Still My Heart / Whatever Did You Mean, Jesus? / Emmanuel   Still My Heart Oh still my heart, I want to hear You Oh still my heart, I want to hear You Lead me to that sacred place Where all my distractions fade And Your voice rings clear   Waiting on You, waiting on You I'll keep waiting on You You are worth the wait   Whatever Did You Mean, Jesus? (Anonymous)   Whatever did you mean, Jesus? Whatever we ask in prayer, In faith, We will receive? I don’t think so. That hasn’t been My experience. Or is my faith so small As not to count Among your promises? You can be impatient, you know, Just ask the fig tree That you withered Because it was not ripe With fruit for you. Will you do the same To me? It is Advent, And I want to long for you, Not to hide from you. Besides, there is no place to hide, No place where you are not. That should be comfort. Even in Advent As we await your coming You are already here. I have faith in that. It would be nice If you answered all my prayers Like some Almighty Santa Claus, But I get it, You are the answer to all my prayers, Just not the answer I expected. That’s the trouble with expectations, Isn’t it, Jesus, That we sometimes miss the gift Because we are looking for Something else than you.     Emmanuel

Acts 17:6 (ESV) And when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, "These men who have turned the world upside down here come here also," Ruth 1:1-18 (ESV) 1 In the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. 2 The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. 3 But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. 4 These took Moabite wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. They lived there about ten years, 5 and both Mahlon and Chilion died, so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband. 6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the fields of Moab that the Lord had visited his people and given them food. 7 So she set out from the place where she was with her two daughters-in-law, and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. 8 But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother's house. May the Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. 9 The Lord grant that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband!” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept. 10 And they said to her, “No, we will return with you to your people.” 11 But Naomi said, “Turn back, my daughters; why will you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb that they may become your husbands? 12 Turn back, my daughters; go your way, for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say I have hope, even if I should have a husband this night and should bear sons, 13 would you therefore wait till they were grown? Would you therefore refrain from marrying? No, my daughters, for it is exceedingly bitter to me for your sake that the hand of the Lord has gone out against me.” 14 Then they lifted up their voices and wept again. And Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her. 15 And she said, “See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.” 16 But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.” 18 And when Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more.

A daily devotional through the recorded words Jesus spoke while He walked alongside us. Our website http://alittlewalkwithgod.com. Thanks for joining me today for "A Little Walk with God." I'm your host Richard Agee. Topic Introduction with headline. Scripture John 14:13-14 Jesus: Whatever you ask for in My name, I will do it so that the Father will get glory from the Son. Let Me say it again: if you ask for anything in My name, I will do it. Devotional When I was growing up, there was a show in which a multimillionaire went around the country and just arbitrarily wrote a check to people for several thousand dollars. Not worth quite as much today, but a lot of money then Never showed the millionaire's face or mentioned his name Show focused on what the recipients did with the money Some squandered the money on frivolous junk Some spent it on things that seemed like good investments, but only on themselves Some did charitable things for other people Sometimes we read these verses with that kind of thought in mind Santa is coming Get whatever we want Just ask and it will appear All we have to do is tag on His name at the end and it will happen the way we want Twisted view of these verses About His name, not ours About His ministry, not ours About His plans, not ours About His wants, not ours Jesus wants to answer our prayers to bring glory to Him which gives glory to the Father Goes back, then, to what is the Father's desires and plans for this world Desires that all will know His saving grace and follow Him That all will recognize Him as God and serve Him as God That all will come to a saving relationship with Him That all will worship Him Do our prayers reflect that attitude, that request, that outcome as an end result? He will answer He wants the glory First commandment, He is a jealous God, He will not share our devotion with anyone or anything He alone deserves our worship He wants His name untarnished Ask in His name If you want to learn more about my church, you can find us at SAF.church. If you like the devotional, share it with someone. If you don't, tell me. I hope you'll join me again tomorrow for "A Little Walk with God."
