Alexandra felt excited by the challenge of giving birth. She did yoga and the ‘Transform Your Birth' course. Even though she wanted a low intervention birth, she knew she would have to learn to be ok with whatever unfolded on the day. With an induction looming, she did everything to bring this baby on - and it worked. Through the process of getting clear, and communicating to her partner and support team what was important to her, she was able to surrender to the birth and work with her tools to get through what ended up being a fierce labour. The phrase “whatever happens” doesn't conjure up visions of stability. When people say that - “whatever happens” - it's usually because something bad is going to happen. For the church at Philippi, this was the case. In his letter to the early church in that city, Paul understood that the political climate was going to get heated. The earliest Christians in Philippi were in all likelihood facing serious persecution for political reasons. Incredibly, within this context, the Apostle Paul (who himself was a Roman Citizen) tells this group of Christians that no matter what happens politically, that they were to remember that their citizenship is in Heaven and their King is not Caesar, but Jesus. This would have real implications for the way they lived their lives - but Paul's advice still rings true for believers down through the ages. Since last week's election win for Donald Trump, we are seeing a renewed sense of scorn for Republican voters in parts of the mainstream media. The Guardian's Rebecca Solnit, for example, writes in her column that “our mistake was to think we lived in a better country than we do.” My guest on today's program doesn't see it that way. She's a lefty Democrat who moved from Park Slope, Brooklyn, to Trump country — and she writes that the gift of living in a rural county is that “I keep finding reasons to see my political adversaries as human.”Larissa Phillips runs the Honey Hollow farm in upstate New York. Not everything hinges upon the presidency. Today, I take a deep dive into the doctrine of the lesser magistrate and how conservatives can and must create impervious red islands through which to govern in accordance with God and the Constitution. Thankfully, new data shows that people are self-sorting and this is already beginning to occur. If Trump wins, blue states will teach us a lesson in the power of federalism. They are already planning to implement their policies at the state level. We must learn from them and do the same thing if Harris wins. But here's the kicker: Even if Trump wins, we must fortify red states while we still can. I explain how even some of our federal focus should be directed toward devolving power to the states. We have so much energy behind voting Republican in a presidential election. My final message for this year is that we must harness that energy every day in between presidential elections to focus on red-state primaries and legislative sessions. Paul faces two outcomes: life or death. In the uncertainty of this situation he remains confident of one thing: his future is wrapped up in Jesus' presence. This is the case with us in every uncertain and ambiguous situation. It's in this light that Paul encourages the church - with its disunity and fearfulness - to continue to live out their faith because it is the Spirit that establishes us in Christ. So, in “whatever happens,” we can be confident that Jesus is the ground we can stand on. He supplies the Spirit and others as evidence of his present and coming kingdom. By Raul Sandoval
