Welcome to Day 1655 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me.This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to WisdomKeep The Faith – Daily WisdomWelcome to Wisdom-Trek. Wisdom is the final frontier in gaining true knowledge. We are on a daily trek to create a legacy of wisdom, seek out discernment and insights, and boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend; this is Gramps. Thanks for coming along on today's trek as we increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs%2016%3A16&version=NLT (Proverbs 16:16) How much better to get wisdom than gold, and sound judgment than silver! We are on Day 1655 of our Trek, and it's time to explore another nugget of wisdom, which includes an inspirational quote along with some wise words from Gramps for today's trek. If you apply the words you hear today, over time, it will help you become more healthy, wealthy, and wise as you continue your daily trek of life. So let's jump right in with today's nugget: Today's quote is from Jim Patrick, and it is: A Christian must keep the faith, but not to himself. Keep The Faith Throughout scripture, we are encouraged to ‘keep the faith,' but that does not mean keeping it to ourselves. In fact, we are commanded to share our faith with others as we have the opportunity to do so. Faith is powerful, and with that power, we can move mountains. It only takes a small amount of faith to impact the world significantly. The root of the issue is that we lack adequate faith for our use, let alone having enough to share that faith with others. If we are questioning and not following God's precepts, how can we expect others who observe us and gain faith through us? It is through faith that a righteous person has life. We need to allow God to enable us to live a life worthy of His call. It is then we will have the power to accomplish all the good things faith in God prompts us to do. We need to cling to our faith so that we can share it with others. The instructions for a robust faith are found in, https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews+12%3A1-2&version=NLT (Hebrews 12:1-2) Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God's throne. As you ponder this nugget of wisdom for yourself, please encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of ‘Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy.' If you would like to listen to any of our past 1654 treks or read the Wisdom Journal, they are available at Wisdom-Trek.com. I encourage you to subscribe to Wisdom-Trek on your favorite podcast player so that each day's trek will be downloaded automatically. If you have not done so, please consider giving us a five-star rating so that others will also join us in mining our nuggets of wisdom. Thank you so much for allowing me to be your guide, mentor, and, most of all, your friend as I serve you through this Wisdom-Trek podcast and journal. As we take this Trek together, let us always: Live Abundantly (Fully) Love Unconditionally Listen Intentionally Learn Continuously Lend to others Generously Lead with Integrity Leave a Living Legacy Each Day I am Guthrie Chamberlain….reminding you to 'Keep Moving Forward,' ‘Enjoy your Journey,' and ‘Create a Great Day…Everyday'! See you Tomorrow for more daily wisdom!
From the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s, Nantucket was the world’s leading whaling port. But the island’s east and south coasts remained devoid of lighthouses well into the 1800s, in spite of the high volume of shipping traffic passing the island and the presence of dangerous shoals offshore. Finally, in the late 1840s, a bluff at Sankaty Head in the village of 'Sconset on the island's southeast coast was chosen as a lighthouse site. A 53-foot brick lighthouse was built and a second-order Fresnel lens was installed. The station was automated and destaffed in 1965. In 1990, the Army Corps of Engineers estimated that Sankaty Head Light would be in danger of falling over the eroding bluff within ten years. A move was completed in the fall of 2007. The ’Sconset Trust is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the lighthouse and its grounds. Rob is an accomplished photojournalist who has been the staff photographer for three island newspapers, and his photography has also been featured in the New York Times and the Boston Globe. His books include Scallop Season, a Nantucket Chronicle, co-written with Jim Patrick; Sconset, co-written with Richard Trust; and Keeping the Light, about the historic move of Sankaty Head Lighthouse in 2007. In this episode, the Director's Club goes the verite route as we look at the films of legendary documentarian Frederick Wiseman. Joined by Chicago Film Discussion Group co-organizer Peter Richards, we go over the vastswath of a remarkably consistent body of work that delves into extensive looks at towns, schools, strip clubs, boxing gyms, and social organizations of all kinds, and explore how their deliberately removed perspectives and extended scopes allow for a contemplative insightful look at these subjects unique to the documentary form. Cross-posted over at Director's Club too! Jim here! I've been in a horrible funk so I put out the call (or the "Pat" signal) to my dear old friend Patrick Ripoll to stop by for pizza, cannoli and some good old fashioned conversation. First we dealt with our dark thoughts surrounding jobs and then turned on the mics to do what we do best - ramble on about movies. This time we focus on two recent horror releases in particular. David Gordon Green's 2018 sequel HALLOWEEN and Luca Guadagnino's remake of SUSPIRIA. Fair warning, we spoil both so hopefully you've seen them by now, and you probably should. Along the way, we dive further into the Halloween franchise, conflicted thoughts about Argento, other horror remakes we like, and a whole slew of bizarre digressions towards the end including the idea of all remakes putting podcasters into their updated takes. What horror remakes would we like to see or can expect? Is Hollywood already as doomed as planet Earth to the point of not expecting greatness anymore? Is 2018 a weak year for movies? Did Patrick actually capture the sense and sound of eating cannoli at the top of the show? You'll have to tune in and listen to find out. This was a blast and hopefully you think so too. 00:00 - 12:39 - Intro 12:40 - 47:02 - Halloween (2018) 47:03 - 01:30:27 - Suspiria (2018) 01:30:28 - 02:20:40 - Digressions, Remakes, The Future Of Cinema Be sure to check out Patrick's latest episode of Tracks of the Damned, which is a totally awesome mix of Halloween treats: http://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/tracksofthedamned/halloweenmixtape2018
Detective Lt. Tim Cotton runs the Bangor, Maine Police Department’s Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/bangormainepolice/ In the span of three years, with a little help from the Duck of Justice, Tim Cotton has grown the department’s following from 10,000 to (almost) 275,000—more than eight times the population of Bangor. He's now the Criminal Investigations Commander within the department, but he still makes plenty of time for social media. Tim Cotton was interviewed by Portland Press Herald reporter and social media editor, Jim Patrick as part of the newspaper's "Maine Voices Live" series.
As the latest session of the legislature closed this year, reporter Eric Russell was watching how lawmakers would respond to the opioid addiction and overdose crisis. Last year, 376 Mainers died after taking some form of prescription or street-bought painkiller: things like OxyContin, fentanyl, heroin, or a combination of drugs. Russell was the lead writer for Portland Press Herald's Lost, a chronicle of how addiction and death impacts communities as a whole, and thought the urgency of the issue would result in legal changes and ... it didn't. In this episode, Russell explains to social media editor Jim Patrick how ongoing narcotic addiction spread into the mainstream and they discuss how framing the issue as a moral crisis is impeding meaningful change. Editorial page editors Greg Kesich and Sarah Collins dug into the mailbags to crown Kathleen Mikulka as June's Letter Writer of the Month. In this episode, Mikulka joins us to share more about her teaching experience and why she is concerned about creating education policy based on test scores. We also hear from social media czar Jim Patrick, who makes the argument that while Facebook maintains its reputation for impulsive, ad hominem comments, the Press Herald has also attracted engaged, informed readers that will tempt you to defy the Internet principle of "Don't read the comments!" Lastly, we dig into the funniest, smartest, most indignant messages from PressHerald.com, featuring yarmouth1, bowdoin 81, elvisisdead, 3midcoastg8tor, and a special appearance by columnist Jim Fossell. I tied my dear friend Patrick Ripoll to a fucking couch! Former co-host and podcaster extraordinaire, is back for this special bonus episode. We are hoping that this bonus offering for October will encourage you to donate any amount to the network to help keep our shows running, but again, no obligation, just a request: http://www.nowplayingnetwork.net/donation/ Patrick is a movie commentary savant at this point, thanks to his terrific show Tracks of the Damned. So I invited him down to my place for an in-depth analysis on John Carpenter's THE THING. Many laughs were had, theories were discussed, and a blood test was administered. The big question is: Who is THE THING and when? And does the introduction of McCready tie into the way the film wraps up? Also why did DMX show up for a few minutes? All of these questions may or may not be answered. I should've given Patrick a bottle of whiskey at the end of this truly joyful commentary on one of my all-time top five favorite horror films. Cue up your copy and get ready to experience this classic movie, Jim & Patrick style for this wonderful time of year. Happy Halloween and Happy October to all!
