After discussing Trump’s China trade truce trouble and potential Chinese student deportations (1:00), I talk a bit about the Uyghur diaspora’s problems with Chinese spies and the mechanism China has used to control them for many decades (24:36). Lastly, we cover this week’s Chinese cities to pray for (34:27), followed by a couple of new stories about playing “hide ‘n seek” with the Chinese police 10 years ago this week (40:42). Bucharest Below! Speaking of Wurmbrand, just a couple hours after posting last week’s episode of the Prison Pulpit, my flight from Oman to London took me directly over Iraq (dry and desolate), Turkey (green and gorgeous), and then after crossing the Black Sea, Bucharest, Romania, where Richard Wurmbrand was from, and where he was arrested and spent years in solitary confinement! I'm still traveling (6 countries in 6 days), so today's show is a mashup of two shorter bonus episodes I recorded exactly one year ago. The first discusses John G. Paton on his birthday (May 24, 1824), as well as a little bit about his contemporary Hudson Taylor. In the second, I spill the beans about the day I was deported from NW China in 2018. Note, these have been lightly edited from the old originals, but some 2024 or otherwise time-bound references are sure to remain. My apologies in advance. Part I: The Autobiography of John G. Sometime soon, we’ll return to Richard Wurmbrand’s collection of Sermons in Solitary Confinement, but today I want to read an excerpt from a newsletter I received last week from Michael Wurmbrand, the now 80+ year old son of Richard Wurmbrand and founder of the Richard Wurmbrand Foundation. What's Wrong With VOM? BTW, Michael does NOT recommend the ministry of Voice of the Martyrs, which he helped to found many decades ago. He was fired from the ministry more than ten years ago, when he demanded a more broad inquiry into the travels and contacts of former VOM director, Tom White, who committed suicide in VOM’s Bartlesville, OK, warehouse in 2012, after allegations surfaced of him molesting a ten year old girl. (Read his “Open Letter” about VOM here: https://www.billionbibles.com/michael-wurmbrand-vom.html) Michael Wurmbrand also runs another parallel ministry, Help For Refugees, focused primarily on his native Romania, and has made all of his father’s books (and formerly unpublished writings) available for free since VOM continues to use his parents’ likeness and writings without his permission. In contrast, check out one of my favorite ministries, Asia Harvest: https://www.asiaharvest.org/ How To See Angels All that to say that in each month’s ministry newsletter, he includes a formerly unpublished homily or devotional by his late father, Richard Wurmbrand. And that’s what I’m going to share with you now… https://chinacall.substack.com/p/how-to-see-angels A Word from Michael Wurmbrand Also, here is a quote I stumbled across earlier from Michael Wurmbrand, which should challenge us: “As my father emphasized many times, the head of the serpent needs to be crushed and we need not tickle its belly. Christians have to attack the head of evil. Love of money is the root of all evil. The reason the communists wanted and worked to see us dead, was described by one of the Romanian communist ambassadors in a confidential discussion: ‘because of Wurmbrand, Romania lost preferred-nation status with the United States, 8 years in a row.’ (Isn’t that amazing, that one man did that?!) While many missions fight [evil with] programs, countless banks and businessmen support evil in the same areas through their financial interest, [doing] business as usual, like [in] China, Vietnam, Moslem countries, etc. How can a Christian in good conscience work and draw a salary in the oil industry in Moslem countries where his fellow Christians are maimed, even killed for their faith? On this episode Mike and Jason discuss the Cleveland Cavaliers' disappointing Game 2 loss to the Indiana Pacers. They delve into the impact of key player injuries, particularly focusing on the absence of Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, and DeAndre Hunter. The conversation shifts to the performance of Donovan Mitchell and analyzing how playoff basketball differs from the regular season. They also touch on referee decisions and the historical context of the game, concluding with a ranking of the worst losses in Cavs history. Mike & Jason ride the emotional rollercoaster of the NBA playoffs, focusing on the disappointment of the Cavs' season, the surprising performance of the Knicks against the Celtics, the dominance of Jokic in the Nuggets' game and whether the Warriors can beat the Wolves without Steph Curry. Welcome to this special episode of the China Compass Podcast, #28 in the weekly “Prison Pulpit” series! I'm your China travel guide, Missionary Ben. You can follow me on X (@chinaadventures) where I post daily reminders to pray for China (http://PrayforChina.us). To learn more about our various ministry endeavors and to get any of the missionary biographies I’ve published, visit www.PrayGiveGo.us! First, I want to remind everyone why I started this second weekly podcast within China Compass. I want to encourage people to pray for Pastor Wang Yi (and others like him, as Hebrews 13:3 teaches us) by sharing from his own words and sermons. We’ve also looked at sermons from Richard Wurmbrand. But today I’m taking a break from Richard Wurmbrand’s Sermons in Solitary Confinement, to talk about what happened to me exactly 7 years ago, when I was arrested and interrogated in China. Specifically, after recounting my memories for a bit, I want to share some thoughts on how to pray for others who may someday find themselves in a similar situation. For instance, if you know someone is going to be undergoing intense questioning or interrogations related to their testimony or ministry, here are some specific things (from one who has been in that very situation) to pray for: Pray for clarity of mind (and wisdom) Pray for boldness (against fear and worry) Pray for family (who may not know what is going on) Get the book and other special content @ UNBEATEN.VIP! If a prisoner has to cough, he must say to the warden who continually spies on him "Bau-gau," which means "Please give me permission." It is "Bau-gau" for spitting, for scratching oneself, for killing vermin. (Not exactly: to baogao is tomake a report or confess) If all at once or someone in the cell goes mad and begins to sing, the rest have to sit motionless, while their fellow-prisoner is silenced through beatings. And how could they help him? They have chains on their hands and feet. In Hebrews 13:3 it is written, "Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them." Try to sit six hours like this, motionless, on the floor (in prison, it is on the cold concrete), to see how your brethren fare! They endure not only this physical suffering and food which has the taste of sawdust. They suffer from doubts, too. "Why did my Heavenly Father allow me to come here?" Our brethren bear all this for Christ's sake. Richard Wurmbrand: Once again, we are going to turn to the late Richard Wurmbrand to speak to us on behalf of those of the persecuted church who are currently being imprisoned and tortured for Christ. For those who don't know who Richard Wurmband is, here's a brief intro: Lutheran minister in Romania. 14 years in prison, including 3 in solitary confinement. After “escaping”, published ”Tortured for Christ" in the 1960s and testified to Congress. Helped start Voice of the Martyrs (but his son Michael doesn’t trust VOM). Michael Wurmbrand’s VOM letter: https://www.billionbibles.com/michael-wurmbrand-vom.html Michael Wurmbrand’s ministry (free books!): https://richardwurmbrandfoundation.com/ Sermons in Solitary Confinement Most likely published in the early 1970s, just a few years after he fled from Communist Romania… Read the book for yourself: https://richardwurmbrandfoundation.com/pdfs/ssc-english.pdf Today we look at portions from the first sermon in the collection, God’s Unjust Laws: Here's the portion about lying that I discussed a little more in depth... "Thou shalt not bear false witness” is a law for the man who has no reason to lie, or perhaps is not even able to do so, not having the slightest imagination; it is also for me, who has to answer the Communist interrogator. If I tell him the truth, as he asks me, appealing to my Christian obligation, many other arrests will follow. Rahab, after having hid the two Israelite spies, lied, saying that she did not know where they came from or where they had gone. Did she do wrong? I remember that Spurgeon preached on this subject, and said that he had often tried to put himself in Rahab's place. Supposing he had hidden some persecuted Protestants and was asked by the authorities if they were in his house. What would his answer have been? It is known that he was very strict against lying. We had to lie in the Nazi times, too. So I was interested to read what he said: "I have tried to imagine what I would say, and have never yet been able to make up my mind ••• I have more light than Rahab, and certainly I have had more leisure to consider the case, and yet I do not see my way. I am not sure whether Rahab's lie was not more honest and outspoken than many an evasion which has suggested itself to very clever people." I have often quoted his words to brethren who were worried about having to lie to oppressing authorities. Spurgeon could not make up his mind. I have made up mine. I lie to the Communist examining officers, and I must say I do it with delight.
