Cochlear implants are neat little devices that drastically improve one's quality of life. However, only about 10% of those that qualify for cochlear implants have actually received one. When one thinks of cochlear implants, the first thing that might come to mind is surgery--invasive, lengthy, with a long time of recovery. However, at PNI, patients can expect a much faster, minimally invasive treatment option. Dr. Rebecca Lewis, the Audiology Director of the Adult & Pediatric Cochlear Implant Program, highlights the importance of getting an evaluation done, and early. Studies have shown that the earlier one gets treatment for their hearing issues, the better the outcome. Mathilde Tranberg, an outreach and patient support specialist at PNI, is a cochlear implant recipient herself. As she was implanted as a child, she knows firsthand how helpful it can be. Her goal is to spread the word about cochlear implants through community outreach and education. Listen in and learn about how these innovative devices are changing lives.

Cochlear implants remain vastly underutilized despite decades of evidence showing their ability to restore hearing and improve quality of life. In this episode, neurotologist Dr. Varun Varadarajan joins host Brian Taylor to explore the clinical, logistical, and cultural barriers that continue to limit access to cochlear implant care. Drawing on his background in music and neuroscience, Dr. Varadarajan shares his journey into hearing restoration surgery and offers insights into early intervention, the 60/60 referral guideline, and why timing matters for long-term outcomes. The discussion highlights several misconceptions that often delay or prevent patients from seeking cochlear implant evaluation—from concerns about age, surgery, and cost to misunderstandings about candidacy and device function. Dr. Varadarajan stresses the importance of individualized counseling, collaborative decision-making, and helping patients understand that cochlear implantation is a process, not a one-size-fits-all solution. He also addresses myths within the professional community, including hesitancy around residual hearing loss and outdated assumptions about surgical complexity.Beyond clinical considerations, Dr. Varadarajan shares practical strategies for building and expanding cochlear implant programs, including the importance of audiology partnerships, reimbursement planning, and aligning institutional goals. He also explains the value of the Cochlear Provider Network in connecting rural or underserved patients to implant services, and discusses how remote care and virtual follow-up are reshaping postoperative management.Be sure to subscribe to our channel for the latest episodes each week and follow This Week in Hearing on LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter). https://twitter.com/WeekinHearing- https://www.linkedin.com/company/this-week-in-hearing- https://hearinghealthmatters.org/thisweek/

The world's largest market, the US, started the new trading week mostly in the green despite investors remaining nervous about ‘liberation day' on April 2nd whereby it is expected President Donald Trump will announce an array of reciprocal tariffs on countries he believes have been tough on the US in terms of tariffs and trade in recent years. The Dow Jones rose 1%, the S&P500 added 0.55% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq ended the day down 0.14%.In Europe overnight the sea of red extended into the new trading week across the region as investors brace for reciprocal tariffs out of the US on 2nd April. The STOXX600 fell 1.51% to post the first losing month on the index for 2025. Germany's DAX lost 1.33%, the French CAC fell 1.58% and, in the UK, the FTSE100 ended the day down 0.88%.Across the APAC region on Monday, markets also closed lower on Monday ahead of Trump's second round of tariffs to be announced. Japan's Nikkei plunged 4.05%, China's CSI index lost 0.71%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1.09% and South Korea's Kospi index ended the day down 3%.South Korea and Japan are expected to bear much of the brunt of Trump's newly introduced 25% automotive tariff with these regions ranking 2nd and 3rd among the countries with the highest automotive trade with the US.Locally to start the week the ASX200 plunged into the red with a 1.7% decline at the closing bell to mark the 3rd worst trading session of the year, as global market sentiment remains uneasy amid escalated tariff, trade war and subdued economic global growth concerns. The iron ore mining giants were sold off on Monday as the outlook for exports remains murky, especially to our largest trade partner, China. BHP, Rio and Champion Iron each fell over 3%, over 4% and over 5% respectively to start the new trading week lower.Domain shares fell almost 2% on Monday after the board unanimously recommended a takeover bid from US real estate company CoStar to shareholders. Shareholders were seemingly unimpressed which led to the sell-off yesterday. What to watch today:Ahead of Tuesday's trading session the ASX, the SPI futures are anticipating the market will open the day up 0.85% tracking Wall Street's gains overnight. The all-important RBA interest rate meeting is today with the market expecting Australia's central bank to hold the current cash rate at 4.1% for the next period. On the commodities front this morning, oil is trading 2.85% higher at US$71.34/barrel, gold is 1.3% higher at US$3124/ounce and iron ore is up 0.07% at US$102.43/tonne.The Aussie dollar has weakened against the greenback overnight to buy US$0.62, 93.67 Japanese Yen, 48.22 British Pence and NZ$1.10.Trading Ideas:Bell Potter has slightly reduced the 12-month price target on Light & Wonder (ASX:LNW) from $205 to $197 and maintain a buy rating on the leading global cross-platform games operator after Aristocrat Leisure escalated its legal fight against Light and Wonder with a second amended complaint around LNW's Jewel of the Dragon game. And Trading Central has identified a bearish signal on Cochlear (ASX:COH) following the formation of a pattern over a period of 23-days which is roughly the same amount of time the share price may fall from the close of $262.30 to the range of $246 to $250 according to standard principles of technical analysis.

In this episode of "I'm Just Dizzy," we delve into a topic that has garnered significant attention over recent years: the prevalence of vestibular and cochlear symptoms associated with COVID-19 infections and vaccinations. Join us as we unravel the complexities behind symptoms such as dizziness, tinnitus, and hearing loss, which have become notably common among COVID-19 survivors and those who have been vaccinated. We start by exploring the statistics that shed light on the frequency of these symptoms. Post-COVID-19 infection, a significant number of people have exhibited spontaneous and positional nystagmus, difficulty with eye movements, and vertigo, indicating potential inner ear damage and vestibular dysfunction. We also discuss the incidence of these symptoms following vaccination, reassuring listeners that while the numbers are lower, the experiences of those affected are no less significant. Our journey continues as we examine the potential causes of these symptoms. From direct viral infections of the inner ear to vascular complications and the impact of Long COVID, we cover the various factors contributing to these distressing conditions. We delve into the intricacies of inner ear infections, such as vestibular neuritis and labyrinthitis, and their potential to lead to chronic conditions like Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (3PD).Moreover, we address the challenges in diagnosing central vestibular disorders and the importance of an accurate diagnosis for effective treatment. Highlighting the benefits of vestibular rehabilitation and complementary therapies, we emphasize the need for individualized treatment plans to aid recovery. Finally, we stress the importance of ongoing research in understanding these symptoms and developing better treatment protocols. ופה בדיוק השוק של ה-iQ Buds 2 Max According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), approximately 30 million adults in the United States (13%) have hearing loss in both ears. Of these, 20% are considered deaf, meaning they have difficulty understanding speech even with a hearing aid. The remaining 80% are considered hard of hearing, meaning they can understand speech with the help of a hearing aid.   The prevalence of hearing loss increases with age. For example, about 40% of adults aged 65-74 and 70% of adults aged 75 and older have hearing loss in both ears.   Hearing loss can have a significant impact on a person's quality of life. It can make it difficult to communicate, participate in social activities, and work. It can also lead to social isolation, depression, and anxiety.   There are a number of things that can be done to help people with hearing loss, including: Wearing hearing aids. Hearing aids amplify sound, making it easier for people with hearing loss to hear. Cochlear implants. Cochlear implants are electronic devices that can restore some hearing to people who are profoundly deaf. American Sign Language (ASL). ASL is a visual language that is used by many deaf people. Learning ASL can help people with hearing loss communicate with others. Support groups. Support groups can provide people with hearing loss with a sense of community and understanding.   Of the 80% of adults in the US who are hard of hearing, 60% have light hearing loss and 40% have heavy hearing loss.   Light hearing loss is defined as a hearing loss of 25 to 40 decibels (dB). This level of hearing loss can make it difficult to hear soft sounds, such as a whisper or the ticking of a clock. However, people with light hearing loss can usually understand speech in quiet environments. Heavy hearing loss is defined as a hearing loss of 41 to 90 dB. This level of hearing loss can make it difficult to hear even loud sounds. People with heavy hearing loss may need to use a hearing aid or cochlear implant to understand speech. It is important to note that these are just general guidelines. The severity of hearing loss can vary from person to person, even if they have the same level of hearing loss. For example, two people with 40 dB of hearing loss may have different experiences. One person may be able to understand speech in quiet environments without any difficulty, while the other person may need to use a hearing aid to understand speech in any environment.

When people notice their vision blurring, they will frequently dash off to the eye doctor. Not so with hearing loss. It often goes ignored and undiagnosed until it becomes unbearable. Dr. Courtney Voelker is trying to change that. She's a neurotologist, a head and neck surgeon who specializes in diseases of the ear and related structures. She spends much of her time giving the gift of hearing to her patients using cochlear implants. These near-magical devices restore hearing after an intricate two-hour, outpatient surgery. They help newborns get on the path to mainstream development and cognition. Dr. Voelker has watched many toddlers light up when they hear the world for the first time. Cochlear implants help older adults avoid the isolation and cognitive decline that comes with hearing loss. With Bluetooth technology, cochlear implants are becoming almost bionic in their capabilities. They can connect to sound systems in music venues or classrooms.
