Our goal was to get to some more gialli this year, so we're starting off with Dario Argento's second film The Cat O' Nine Tails. This one is technically a giallo but has a lot more in common with Italian poliziotteschi than anything else, and interestingly it refrains from dealing in most of the common tropes of the sub-genre. We talk about the somewhat mundane plotting of this murder mystery, the pseudo-science of XYY chromosomes, and Argento's beginnings. We're also drinking Ommegang x Other Half's Neon Gleam double-dry hopped IPA! This week, Denise and Josh sit down with Joe Argento, co-owner of Mama's Meatballs & Pizzeria in Pennsauken, New Jersey. Joe grew up in the pizza business and began working at his grandmother's shop at age 8. Joe went on to own his own pizzeria, but was ready to switch directions. His wife, Katherine, wanted to be in the food truck business, but Joe still wanted a storefront of some kind. As luck would have it, an existing restaurant/food truck became available in Pennsauken. While, at first, the business functioned as a sandwich shop, Joe and Katherine quickly knew that pizza needed to be part of the equation. Mama's Meatballs & Pizzeria has an expanded menu and drives creativity with offerings, like turning jumbo garlic knots into sliders. The delivery and carryout shop serves New York-style, Sicilian and Grandma pizza, an assortment of sandwiches and five different meatballs. We talk shop in a casual conversation. We even explore when Joe and Katherine decided to reverse course on expanding the business into a neighboring storefront and honed in on the future of the business to one day own the space and build his dream kitchen and storefront, include dine-in seating. Learn more about Mama's Meatballs & Pizzeria at https://www.mamasmeatballs.com/ and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/mamas.meatballs/.

Welcome back to Film Haven Reviews!!! This week we are starting a brand new theme called "Giallo Masters" or "Masters of Giallo" one of those! And we are starting off with the very famous Argento classic, Deep Red (1975). A tale of two movies, this film both impressed me greatly and disappointed me deeply. The cinematography and kills were great, but the sound design and story arc left me heavily wanting. I gave this film a 7/10 for providing an uneven, but overall satisfying experience, and showing such incredible craft when it comes to the the camerawork and practical effects. For my full written review feel free to follow my instagram: https://www.instagram.com/film_haven_reviews/

“Susie... Sarah... I once read that names which begin with the letter 'S' are the names of SNAKES! Sssss! Ssssss!” We watched “Suspiria” (1977) with our friend Devin Lotfi (I Don't Want to Hear That Podcast) and we're taking a trip down the witches road (no, not that one). You can't get any more niche than 1970's Italian horror, but our man Dario Argentina is the master and “Suspiria” is the icon of the genre. Argento's stylized use of primary colors gives the movie an expressionistic vibe and makes it stand out from the usually dark tone of more mainstream horror films. The neon palette used here is almost a trope in modern art house horror but in 1977 this was revolutionary. Jessica Harper is our ethereal American student amongst the fierce European witches that run the mysterious dance academy. We've also got a blind piano teacher, a lumbering, mute manservant and some male dance students with ambiguous intentions rounding out the spooky tone. We defy you to assign the significance of the bright reds, blues and greens that are cast over the scenes. The story may seem at times illogical or confusing but it all comes together in the final - extremely scary - moments. The only more terrifying about the last twelve minutes of this podcast, are the first eighty nine! Coucou everyone! We are so happy to have our dear friend Clare Wright of the Sunday Scaries horror film club (@sundayscariesfilm) on the pod to talk all about giallo - the Italian horror film subgenre. Focusing on giallo films from the 1960s and '70s, Clare breaks down 3 major themes, each with a film and director to match. What we love about giallo films are their iconic use of color, fashion, and music - those Italians are so stylish! Thank you Clare for sharing your passion with us

Suspiria (2018) is a haunting exploration of power, control, and the horrors of fascism, set against the backdrop of Cold War-era Berlin in 1977. Gabe discusses the differences in the two films, unpacks the themes of facism and guilt, as well as defines the three mothers and their role in Argento's world. Supporter Leigh's chosen a cult-classic horror movie this week with Demons from 1985. Directed by Lamberto Bava and produced by Dario Argento, is a classic Italian horror film known for its intense gore, vibrant visuals, and relentless pace. The production took place in Berlin, with much of the action set inside an old movie theater, where a group of strangers attends the screening of a mysterious horror film. Notable for its high-energy approach and practical effects, with Bava and Argento collaborating to create a visceral experience. The transformation sequences and makeup effects were designed to be as grotesque and graphic as possible, setting a new standard for splatter horror. The soundtrack, featuring a mix of heavy metal and synth-driven music from bands like Motley Crue and Billy Idol, heightened the film's aggressive and frenetic atmosphere. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter. www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesback Plot Summary: A group of people were invited to a special screening at a mysterious Berlin cinema. Unbeknownst to them, the film they watch is a demonic horror, and when one of the attendees gets injured by a prop mask from the display, she begins to transform into a demon herself. Chaos erupts as the infection spreads, turning the moviegoers into ferocious, bloodthirsty demons. The survivors are forced to fight their way out of the sealed theater while the terrifying situation escalates. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support
Ciao a tutti ⋆˙☽ we're back with szn 5! Our first theme is serial killers, starting off with the 1982 Italian horror mystery, 'Tenebrae', directed by Dario Argento.
Dr. Karl-Heinz Mertins holds a master's degree in mechanical engineering and a doctorate degree in mechatronics/ag engineering from the Technical University Berlin, Germany. He has over 35 years of engineering and business experience in Europe and the United States, with focus on product innovation and new business incubation, using cross-disciplinary methods and cross-cultural sensitivities. His work includes experimental work on intelligent mobile equipment and wind energy systems at the Corporate Engineering Division of Deere & Company. His enthusiasm for F1 began in the year 1961. Mertins presents a “what if” story: What if Robert Eberan von Eberhorst in 1953 would have joined the newly formed Unione Automobili instead of an Auto Union that was only a shadow of its former self? What if Francesco De Virgilio and Ettore Zaccone Mina had been tasked with designing a compact V6 engine for the 2.5-liter GP formula that could take on a rather conventional Mercedes W196? What if Josef Mickl's aerodynamic knowledge would have been applied to create downforce? Would lessons learned from pre-war Silver Arrows and the untimely Cisitalia Grand Prix project, when blended with elements of Lancia's passionate engineering culture, have accelerated the rear-engine revolution in F1? Back to back Italian horrors? Is this HMN becoming a group of cultured individuals? Well, let's not go that far, it's still Argento deep in his heavy metal horror era, but OPERA (1987) might just be his most well-executed film (pun very much intended). And you know, for a movie with a title evoking classical music, it's almost entirely underscored by metal, which is kind of hilarious in its own right. This was a surprising treat to watch and discuss, so put on your coattails, we're getting fancy this week on Horror Movie Night! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It's time for some religious horror, which coincides with a guest who's new graphic novel also sees humans fighting demons - what are the odds? We are joined by comedian, writer and all-around swell guy Jordan Morris for our discussion of the insane (not) Demons 3, Dario Argento and Michele Soavi's THE CHURCH (1989). Beyond its amazingly strange plot and set pieces (even for Italian horror standards), this film also bears the distinction of destroying the relationship between Argento and Soavi. There's also a sick fish monster that pops out of a bowl of holy water and eats some dude's face. Jordan's new book YOUTH GROUP drops this month and is the perfect second half of this week's discussion - get your holies rollin' with the monastic men of Horror Movie Night! On this episode, James Hales returns to discuss 1985's Italian supernatural horror film "Demons" (Italian: Dèmoni) directed by Lamberto Bava and produced by Dario Argento with Aaron and Derek. They talk about Bava's involvement with the project in comparison with Argento and other collaborators, how the movie seems to genre hop, and several of the usual Italian horror film tropes. They also get into the meta plot set up with the fictional movie and theater, red herrings and plot holes, the unnecessary punk scenes, how it pokes fun at societal panic, and many other aspects of the film. Aaron put on that mask and scratched himself, get it? Derek became a demon. James is an instrument of evil, like they said in the damn movie!
