As a Portuguese journalist living in the UK, Joana was shocked when she went back to her home city for 6 months during the first COVID-19 lockdown. Portugal, the junior partner of 2015's new Left electoral experiments, offers the example with the most longevity. The supply and demand relationship the centre-left Socialist Party (PS) embarked on with the anti-austerity Communist Party and Left Bloc reached fruition in this January's general election, in which PS won a historic absolute majority. To guide us through the fate of Portugal's far Left parties, their prospects against a centre Left they they re-legitimised and the rise of a new Portuguese national populism, we welcome Joana Ramiro, contributing editor at Setenta e Quatro, and writer for Novara Media, the Guardian and elsewhere. Something of a sleepy week in British politics, a time in which nothing happened of any real significance. This episode features (@raaleh), Milo (@Milo_Edwards), Nate (@inthesedeserts), and Alice (@AliceAvizandum) discussing these banal developments with London-based journalist (and host of Red Hacks podcast) Joana Ramiro (@joanaramirouk). Parliament didn’t get prorogued, the government didn’t suffer landmark defeats, and Low Tax Chloe didn’t make some of the worst memes in human history. We also also talk about the weird incel logic behind Apple's Siri. It’s a great, normal time to be a resident of this island, folks! In the latest of our hated Serious Episodes (just kidding, you guys love them, right? right?) Jack is joined by journalist and RP Seriousness Correspondent Joana Ramiro (kidding again, she's actually really funny!) to dig into whatever the fuck is going at centre-left weekly the New Statesman. After several months of what appeared to be a move to the left, spearheaded by sometime political and then deputy editor "Red" George Eaton, the New Statesman has slid back well and truly into the bowels of reaction, pumping out chauvinist crap about "The Irish Question" and Helen Lewis's most transphobic article in months. All of it seems to have happened since Eaton (who, full disclosure, is a former guest on this show) was disciplined and sent away on leave for - bizarrely - getting a government advisor (conservative "public intellectual" and vile sack of shit Roger Scruton) sacked for racism. Jack and Joana talk about the culture and practises of the NS and the liberal press generally, drawing parallels with recent incidents where other publications have sold out left-wing contributors for breaking some unwritten rule of the club, and ask the question; why can one of Eaton's colleagues get away with years of virulent bigotry, while he gets ratfucked for performing a public service? More of Jack's conversation with Joana, touching on CUK-TIG (as always) and expanding on our discussion of James O'Brien, will be dropping on patreon.com/reelpolitik within the next few days.

In a special extended episode of Reel Politik (we've generally managed to keep them a bit on the shorter side of late), we're joined by Joana Ramiro, a UK-based Portuguese reporter, to talk about the recent Brazilian presidential election, in which the fascist Jair Bolsonaro, who will assume office in January, triumphed over left-of-centre runner-up Fernando Haddad, the candidate of the once-dominant Workers' Party (PT), who were thrown out of power in a 2016 coup. With Joana, we discuss the political and economic factors that have provoked this seismic shift in the Brazilian political landscape, the past successes, past failures and uncertain future of the PT, Bolsonaro's ideology, and what a government led by him will mean for Brazil, and for the "minority" groups that ultimately constitute a majority of its population. Russia Today is one of Britain’s most controversial TV networks. Backed by the Kremlin and based in Moscow, its London newsroom portrays Russia more positively than the mainstream media, and broadcasts an alternative take on current events generally. But RT has been accused of distributing propaganda and ‘fake news’, and has been found in breach of broadcasting rules.Joana Ramiro worked for RT’s web-team, hoping she could originate meaningful journalism aligned with her left-wing perspective. But, as she explains to Olly, she instead found herself in a world of clickbait, ‘churnalism’ and ‘editorial mellowing’.Elsewhere, in this week's Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart explores the trend for flexitarian burgers; considering the US offerings from Beyond Burger and Impossible Burger. At Dirty Bones in Shoreditch, Ollie and Olly wrap their lips around a vegan Moving Mountains B12 burger - and compare it to the restaurant’s original, non-vegan Mac Daddy. Can it compete?Meanwhile, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox - fresh from being crowned ETO’s Sexpert of the Year, no less - considers a question from a listener who wants to know whether he should be cleaning his sex toy with the powder provided by the sex shop - or whether plain old baby powder would do the trick. The Foxhole is sponsored by our friends at MyCondom.com. They sell a sexually liberating range of prophylactics and lube - and remember, by using our code ‘FOXHOLE’ at Checkout, you can get 10% OFF your whole order! This week’s Lifehack comes courtesy of digital marketing supremo Leanne Hickey, offering up her top tips on how to improve your experience of dating apps: don’t ask boring questions, never message people after 10pm, and always post a real, unfiltered photo of your face! The Lifehack is sponsored by Podcast Lounge - the new podcatcher app for Windows 10 devices.
