Extensive Notes: "No Dummy: AI Will Not Replace Coders"Introduction: The Critical Thinking ProblemAmerica faces a critical thinking deficit, especially evident in narratives about AI automating developers' jobsSpeaker advocates for examining the narrative with core critical thinking skillsSuggests substituting the dominant narrative with alternative explanationsAlternative Explanation 1: Non-Productive EmployeesOrganizations contain people who do "absolutely nothing"If you fire a person who does no work, there will be no impactThese non-productive roles exist in academics, management, and technical industriesReference to David Graeber's book "Bullshit Jobs" which categorizes meaningless jobs:Task mastersBox tickersGoonsWhen these jobs are eliminated, AI didn't replace them because "the job didn't need to exist"Alternative Explanation 2: Low-Skilled DevelopersSome developers have "very low or no skills, even negative skills"Firing someone who writes "buggy code" and replacing them with a more productive developer (even one using auto-completion tools) isn't AI replacing a jobThese developers have "negative value to an organization"Removing such developers would improve the company regardless of automationUsing better tools, CI/CD, or software engineering best practices to compensate for their removal isn't AI replacementAlternative Explanation 3: Basic Automation with Traditional ToolsSoftware engineers have been automating tasks for decades without AISpeaker's example: At Disney Future Animation (2003), replaced manual weekend maintenance with bash scripts"A bash script is not AI. It has no form of intelligence. It's a for loop with some conditions in it."Many companies have poor processes that can be easily automated with basic scriptsThis automation has "absolutely nothing to do with AI" and has "been happening for the history of software engineering"Alternative Explanation 4: Narrow vs. General IntelligenceUseful applications of machine learning exist:Linear regressionK-means clusteringAutocompletionTranscriptionThese are "narrow components" with "zero intelligence"Each component does a specific task, not general intelligence"When someone says you automated a job with a large language model, what are you talking about? It doesn't make sense."LLMs are not intelligent; they're task-based systemsAlternative Explanation 5: OutsourcingCompanies commonly outsource jobs to lower-cost regionsJobs claimed to be "taken by AI" may have been outsourced to India, Mexico, or ChinaThis practice is common in America despite questionable ethicsOrganizations may falsely claim AI automation when they've simply outsourced workAlternative Explanation 6: Routine Corporate LayoffsLarge companies routinely fire ~3% of their workforce (Apple, Amazon mentioned)Fear is used as a motivational tool in "toxic American corporations"The "AI is coming for your job" narrative creates fear and motivationMore likely explanations: non-productive employees, low-skilled workers, simple automation, etc.The Marketing and Sales DeceptionCEOs (specifically mentions Anthropic and OpenAI) make false claims about agent capabilities"The CEO of a company like Anthropic... is a liar who said that software engineering jobs will be automated with agents"Speaker claims to have used these tools and found "they have no concept of intelligence"Sam Altman (OpenAI) characterized as "a known liar" who "exaggerates about everything"Marketing people with no software engineering background make claims about coding automationCompanies like NVIDIA promote AI hype to sell GPUsConclusion: The Real Problem"AI" is a misnomer for large language modelsThese are "narrow intelligence" or "narrow machine learning" systemsThey "do one task like autocomplete" and chain these tasks togetherThere is "no concept of intelligence embedded inside"The speaker sees a bigger issue: lack of critical thinking in AmericaWarns that LLMs are "dumb as a bag of rocks" but powerful toolsLeft in inexperienced hands, these tools could create "catastrophic software"Rejects the narrative that "AI will replace software engineers" as having "absolutely zero evidence"Key Quotes"We have a real problem with critical thinking in America. And one of the places that is very evident is this false narrative that's been spread about AI automating developers jobs.""If you fire a person that does no work, there will be no impact.""I have been automating people's jobs my entire life... That's what I've been doing with basic scripts. A bash script is not AI.""Large language models are not intelligent. How could they possibly be this mystical thing that's automating things?""By saying that AI is going to come for your job soon, it's a great false narrative to spread fear where people worry about all the AI is coming.""Much more likely the story of AI is that it is a very powerful tool that is dumb as a bag of rocks and left into the hands of the inexperienced and the naive and the fools could create catastrophic software that we don't yet know how bad the effects will be."

Seja bem-vindo ao Conversas de Ateliê!Na mesa temos Paulo Henrique Martins, Bia Martins, André Magnelli e Lucas Faial Soneghet. No primeiro bloco discutimos a questão: Por que temos que ser úteis?A pergunta logo evoca outra. Vamos conversar? How can we achieve total systemic change? And are there politicians anywhere who are ready to make it happen (in a way that supports the continuation of complex life on this planet, not the scorched-earth destruction of the right)? The short answer is that yes, there are people deeply embedded in politics who know how dire things are and that we need urgent change. One of these is Natale Bennett, former Green Party leader and now Baroness Bennett of Manor Castle, one of two Green Party members of the UK's House of Lords. She is also the author of the book Change Everything: How We Can Rethink, Repair and Rebuild Society, which was published by UnBound in 2024.Her thesis is that what has been called political common sense over recent decades—that greed is good, inequality doesn't matter and we can keep treating the planet as a mine and a dumping ground—has been a recipe for disaster. The ideology of neoliberalism has delivered poverty and destruction, with a few benefiting while the rest of us pay. We need urgent change - and we have the routes to do it.  Many ideas and arguments in this book have been inspired by the people she has met around the UK. Every idea in it has been road-tested, honed by interaction. We can only get through this dangerous stage  by relying on the collective ingenuity, talents and creativity of millions of people, all empowered to “do politics”. This book aims to synthesise the voices Natalie has heard and read –and encourage them to step forward. They collectively represent true common sense. That's why she chose to publish it with Unbound using crowdfunding. You can order it through them, or it should be in your local bookstore. Today we're examining the impact of bureaucracy and financialization on modern society through the lens of David Graeber's "Utopia of Rules," with reference to another of his works, "Bullshit Jobs." We explore how these forces shape political ideologies, wealth extraction, and everyday life. Starting with the alienation caused by bureaucratic systems, the discussion moves through the fusion of finance and bureaucracy, which influences both worker-corporate relationships and democratic processes. Then we look into the global justice movement's exposure of systemic violence and the role of technology in societal challenges as a potential model for criticism. We also address the perception of value shaped by financial abstractions, the issues within the retirement system, and the personal reassessment prompted by psychedelics. The podcast concludes with a discussion on the potential of worker ownership and the importance of societal renewal through new linguistic templates to combat institutional stagnation. Why so many people work “bullshit jobs,” with James Suzman Up next ►► How to find a meaningful job, or find purpose in the job you already have | Aaron Hurst   • How to find a meaningful job, or find...   Our society is fixated on working. Some of us work 80 hours per week at jobs that don't fulfill us simply for work's sake. Expert anthropologists, such as James Suzman, even go as far as to say that many of the jobs we work could be considered "bullshit jobs" - a complex job that is not entirely needed in the workforce. These jobs are created and executed because our culture, and lifestyle, are organized around the 8-hour workday. So why do we work "bullshit jobs?" Many economists would say it is to fix the problem of scarcity. But what many do not know is that in our society, we passed the scarcity threshold in 1980, and most everyone has their basic needs met. So much so that more food goes into our landfills than goes into our stomachs. If scarcity is no longer an issue, why are we still working over 40 hours per week? It's because people have a humane instinct to work and be productive. If the 40-hour workweek is no longer serving our society, could we be approaching a new economic utopia? Suzman thinks so. In the present day, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, many workers are turning away from unfulfilling jobs and diving headfirst into their hobbies - cooking, writing, painting, and creating. If we keep on this path, our entire economic system is bound to change, making for a richer world where everyone does the work they want to be doing. ---------------- About James Suzman: James Suzman, Phd is an anthropologist specializing in the Khoisan peoples of southern Africa. A former Smuts Fellow in African Studies at the University of Cambridge, he is now the director of Anthropos Ltd., a think tank that applies anthropological methods to solving contemporary social and economic problems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Go Deeper with Big Think:- ►Become a Big Think Member Get exclusive access to full interviews, early access to new releases, Big Think merch and more ►Get Big Think+ for Business Guide, inspire and accelerate leaders at all levels of your company with the biggest minds in business ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode, Nate is joined by philosopher and educator Zak Stein to discuss the current state of education and development for children during a time of converging crises and societal transformation. As the pace of life continues to accelerate - including world-shaking technological developments - our schools struggle to keep pace with changes in cultural expectations. What qualities are we encouraging in a system centered on competition and with no emphasis on creating agency or community participation? How is unfettered technology and artificial intelligence influencing youth - and what should parents, adults, and teachers be doing in response? What could the future of education look like if guided by true teacherly authority with the aim to create well-rounded, stable young humans with a sense of belonging and purpose in their communities?  About Zak Stein:  Dr. Zak Stein is a philosopher of education, as well as a Co-founder of the Center for World Philosophy and Religion. He is also the Co-founder of Civilization Research Institute, the Consilience Project, and Lectica, Inc. The final misery covered in the book is the misery based on knowing that one is doing harm. The most obvious example of this as lawyers would be representing a person or entity, and they are asking you to do something that is itself harmful. While these situations may arise, people tend to be aware and can deal with the moral conflict.

This episode is about the misery of ambiguity and forced pretense, which is the first of four things Graeber identifies as an impact that having a bullshit job can have on you. When it comes to ambiguity in law firms, the lack of transparency is the first thing that comes to mind for Annie. She points out that there should be a simple, straightforward path with clear instructions on each assignment and an obvious ladder to climb within the firm. In reality, there are so many hidden things that lawyers are left to just figure out on their own.

In today's episode, Sarah is back again with Annie Little discussing the book Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber. It's part of a series of podcast discussions diving into the miseries of a bullshit job. Today, it's time to dive into the fourth and final misery that comes with bullshit jobs. Go back and catch up if you missed the first three in this series. The final misery covered in the book is the misery based on knowing that one is doing harm. The most obvious example of this as lawyers would be representing a person or entity, and they are asking you to do something that is itself harmful. While these situations may arise, people tend to be aware and can deal with the moral conflict.  See show notes at formerlawyer.com/190

If you missed the first episode in this series, check that out first and learn the background of this series and more about Annie. See show notes at formerlawyer.com/187

On last week's Rework podcast, Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson, co-founders of 37signals, joined host Kimberly Rhodes to answer listener questions about their approach to design, decision-making, and more.Today, they return to tackle more listener questions, covering a diverse range of topics such as delegating projects, hiring, and remote work.Listen in as they discuss their strategies for helping team members take ownership of their work and their tips on deploying projects. They also offer advice on attracting and retaining the right talent and discuss the role of communication and culture in building a successful team.Show Notes:  [00:26] - Sarah McKenzie asks for tips on delegating projects rather than tasks and helping team members take ownership of their work areas as she wants to move in this direction with her small team.[01:23] - Jason explains how Basecamp delegates projects instead of tasks. In contrast, team members are given a rough general idea of the project and some ideas for the interface design, and they figure out how to get it done in their own time.[02:57] - David adds that even new employees and junior programmers can handle owning a whole project.[04:38] - David shares that Shape Up's idea of a fixed time frame and flexible scope interlocks with delegating projects.[05:32] - Let people live up to high expectations and see who does it quickly and best. Delegating a project means evaluating work based on outcomes, not effort, allowing team members to make decisions and run autonomously within the project's scope. [06:28] - Julio Caesar from Sao Paulo, Brazil, asks DHH about the day-to-day work in a team of two, specifically about code review, pull requests, and dev to production deployments. He's concerned about the time wasted in long change management meetings and how to avoid having someone who doesn't know anything about the project approve a deploy.[07:11] - 37signals has teams of two working on different aspects of a product, with any given feature having a designer and a programmer working on it.[08:24] - David shares that the company has a process where someone is responsible for the quality of the work that goes out the door. There is a mentorship process for new hires. Programmers and designers review each other's work.[08:40] - In the Seven Shipping Principles, there is a notion that if the person is confident that the deploy is low-risk, they are not obligated to get a review. Even CTOs and senior employees sometimes request a review to increase their confidence. The team encourages individuals to have a strong sense of confidence and delegate the responsibility of reviews to themselves.[09:22] - The review process is asynchronous and shouldn't be a blocker.[10:29] - Jason shares that although anyone can deploy work, the company has never had a catastrophic deploy in its history. And rollbacks are very rare.[12:38] - A mystery caller asks David and Jason if they have any rules, constraints, or systems in place to help them decide when to grow and when not to grow, specifically around headcount and staffing.[13:02] - Jason explains that their hiring is department-based and based on specific needs rather than global goals. They follow the principle of "hire when it hurts" and aim to alleviate actual pain rather than future pain. [15:16] - Having two people is better than one—David shares an example where they had only one person in a role, and it was difficult for them to take a vacation or sabbatical without affecting the company. He also suggests that companies should consider redefining a role when someone leaves rather than simply refilling it and only hiring when necessary.[17:54] - Jason emphasizes the importance of the "hire when it hurts" principle, especially for startups. He advises it's better to wait for reality to show what is actually needed before making hiring decisions.[19:15] - Jason and David discuss the practice of hiring defensively, which involves hoarding talent and contributes to the malaise of Bullshit Jobs.[21:06] - David talks about his experience of having a job where it didn't matter if he did anything and the cruelty of putting people in that position, not to mention the ding on the economy. [23:23] - Listener Bhagyesh asks how to find team members that align with work principles and help the business grow without traditional supervision.[23:48] - Jason says they find team members through word of mouth and by writing detailed job ads. They get many applications per role but narrow them down by talking to candidates and having them do a small project.[25:50]- David stresses the importance of finding someone who matches their principles by incorporating them into the ad. They have been promoting Remote work for decades, which helps them find the right people and hire talent from all over the world.[28:35] - Kimberly highlights the importance of the tone of the job description. As a previous candidate, she notes that it gives people a sense of the company's culture.[29:01] - 37signals' job ads accurately describe the place and give people a sense of how they communicate, which is a big part of attracting the right people.[29:33] - Do you have questions for David and Jason about a better way to work and run your business? The HBS hosts discuss the work of flunkies, goons, duct-tapers, box-tickers, and taskmasters. In the middle of the last century it was expected that the number of working hours-- at least in the so-called "developed" world-- would continue to decrease: just as they had gone from the twelve or ten hours a day down to eight at the beginning of the century,  they would continue to decrease to six or even less by the end of the century. Furthermore, it was thought that the mechanization and automation of labor processes would free millions from labor, reducing the need for workers. The opposite seems to have taken place, however, as people are working more and more. So much so that the forty hour work week sounds utopian again. Why are people working so much and what are they doing? The anthropologist David Graeber has argued that the answer is bullshit jobs. What is a bullshit job? Why do they exist? What can we do to get free of them?Full episode notes at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/eepisode-85-bullshit-jobs-------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe and submit a rating/review! Welcome to season 5 of the Queen of the Sciences podcast! Vocation is a topic near and dear to me and Dad, both as a central theological focus of the Lutheran Reformation and also because we just plain take a lot of pleasure in our work. But David Graeber's astonishing book Bullshit Jobs came as a serious wake-up call to us both. In this episode, we review Graeber's case for the precipitous shift from meaningful to meaningless and even actively harmful paid work in the world today, and what it means for an ongoing commitment to the doctrine of vocation. Notes: 1. Graeber, Bullshit Jobs 2. The short story "Gold" in my collection Protons and Fleurons is a skewed look at vocation, but not as skewed as Graeber's. 3. Raushan Gross On the Newly Emerging And Newly Enabling Institutions Of Entrepreneurship

Economics For Business

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 26, 2022

Entrepreneurship today is a movement, a welling-up of new economic creativity, combined with a great desire for economic freedom and the joys of self-reliance and discovery. The movement is newly empowered by enabling institutions that simply weren't around a few years ago, including the internet and its digital economic platforms. Professor Raushan Gross is a great observer and great documenter of this entrepreneurial surge, and he joins the Economics For Business podcast to share some of his original and distinctive observations about the very human aspects of his new entrepreneurial studies. Key Takeaways and Actionable Insights Let's not over-theorize and over-professionalize entrepreneurship: it's people finding new ways to thrive by creatively serving other people. There's an explosion of university entrepreneurship programs, entrepreneurship research and entrepreneurship methodologies. There's an attempt to professionalize entrepreneurship, to make it a product of business schools. Raushan Gross sees things differently, through a humanist, subjective and ethical lens. He looks at the culture of entrepreneurship, the social movement of individuals making their way in life in a new manner, seeing new opportunities to make their lives better for themselves and their families by making life better for others. There's a newly emerging set of institutions and a new class of entrepreneur: the digitalpreneur. Economists take an interest in how institutions shape behavior and economic activity. They see institutions as constraints. They sometimes call them “the rules of the game”. Professor Gross has a different take. The new institutions of entrepreneurship — the internet, digital platforms, e-commerce, digitization in general — are not constraining; rather, they are openings to a new space with new possibilities. This digital space is welcoming. There's abundant knowledge to be shared. There are new ways to think about access to resources, about production and marketing and organization. There's a new world of price signals, much more flexible and fast-changing, and the route to cash flow and profit is faster. Professor Gross identifies digitalpreneurs as a new economic class: not higher or lower, not defined by their origins or background, free to move at any speed and to access any place in their relentless, unbounded pursuit of entrepreneurship. Today's entrepreneurs are rewriting economic history: from the invisible hand to the visible hand to the digital hand. Adam Smith introduced the metaphor of the invisible hand — the concept that individual economic actors and firms entrepreneurially pursuing their own profit goals generate the economic system we call free market capitalism, with benefits for all of society. Friedrich Hayek expressed a similar idea as “spontaneous order”. The invisible hand guided the rapid growth in real standards of living of the industrial revolution. Then the visible hand imposed itself: the concepts of management control, and of planning and centralization. Creativity, innovation, and rapid growth were suppressed, while bureaucracies expanded. We got “Bullshit Jobs”, in David Graeber's locution, from which creativity and caring were expunged. Professor Gross takes us beyond both the invisible hand and the visible hand to the digital hand, which gently guides digitalpreneurs to participate in or even create new markets. The digital hand is generative. It enables digitalpreneurs to operate their own digital platforms, to construct their own digital economy, to assemble their own economic knowledge and to find their own unique place in the knowledge economy. The digital hand opens up new pathways to economic freedom. Digital entrepreneurship can be conducted at any scale, but watch out for the dead hand. Where are the corporations in their embrace of digitalpreneurs? Certainly, there are the new digital corporations like Amazon and Google who seem willing to hire members of the new class and turn them loose in creative experimentation. But what about the old economy corporations who need to make the transition to the new world? Are they hiring entrepreneurs? Are they enabling entrepreneurs, freeing them from bureaucracy and from the command-and-control hierarchy? The evidence so far is that they are not. How to integrate the entrepreneurial orientation into a corporate organization remains an unsolved mystery. How can the corporate advantages of reach and scale be leveraged to further realize the senses of purpose and meaning that drive entrepreneurship? How can corporations shift to the entrepreneurial culture? They need to find ways to eliminate what Professor Gross calls the Dead Hand — bureaucracy, regulation, control, risk-aversion, centralization, procedures, and rules. But corporate culture is not the only barrier to the realization of the entrepreneurial society. There are other cultural barriers to overcome. Professor Deirdre McCloskey is famous for her analysis that the catalyst for what she calls The Great Enrichment — the 3000% increase in real standards of living in certain Western countries from 1800 to the present — was a change in how we talked about entrepreneurship. The perceptions and descriptions of the bourgeois life of commerce transitioned from scorn to admiration. Entrepreneurs came to be seen as bold and innovative, a force for good, providers of desirable services enhancing the quality of life. Professor Gross sees a fresh need for such a change in language and cultural support for the new age of digital entrepreneurship. One example he gives is the language of venture failure. Initiatives that are concluded early or don't hit some target or don't attract sufficient buyers or don't generate enough profit to be sustainable are deemed “failures”. This characterization tends to lead to erroneous conclusions about risk (as in risk of failure) and about the people who engaged in the initiatives (“failures” or, worse, “losers”). There's a much different and better way to frame the same data as learning, and augmenting the pool of knowledge. When we think of entrepreneurship as a flow, we can visualize how information flows from the past to the present, elevating the intelligence of every entrepreneur and every firm that's operating today. Not only does knowledge flow, it compounds, so today's entrepreneurs can be exponentially more informed than their predecessors. The more we adopt this win-win cultural approach to cumulative entrepreneurial knowledge-building, as opposed to the win-lose language of failure and success, the closer we'll come to the beneficent entrepreneurial society that Adam Smith imagined, before he was so rudely interrupted.
