In this cozy and heartwarming episode, Amanda, Laura, and Kendra introduce us to the Danish concept of hygge. As the winter months stretch ahead, they explore how embracing hygge can transform cold, dark days into moments of warmth, comfort, and connection. From lighting candles and layering cozy blankets to gathering with loved ones and enjoying slow, mindful meals, the hosts uncover how this beautiful tradition can help us cultivate happiness even in the chilliest season. What is Hygge?Hygge is the Danish art of creating warmth, comfort, and connection in everyday life. It's about slowing down, being present, and embracing life's simple joys. With its roots in Old Norse, the word hygge translates to “comfort” or “to console,” making it the perfect antidote to winter blues. The Ten Principles of Hygge: Atmosphere – Soft lighting, candles, and cozy surroundings. Presence – Disconnect from distractions and be in the moment. Pleasure – Savor warm drinks, comforting foods, and life's little treats. Equality – Everyone contributes and shares in the moment. Gratitude – Appreciate the small joys. Harmony – No competition, just togetherness. Comfort – Soft blankets, warm clothes, and cozy corners. Truce – Leave drama at the door. Togetherness – Enjoy deep connections with loved ones. Shelter – Create a sanctuary from the cold. Why Does Hygge Matter?Denmark consistently ranks as one of the happiest countries in the world, and many believe that hygge plays a role. Studies show that fostering cozy, nurturing environments can reduce stress, increase mindfulness, and boost happiness. Lighting a candle, for example, has been shown to lower cortisol levels, while engaging in a creative hobby can release dopamine. Bringing Hygge Into Your Life: At Home – Layer soft blankets, light candles, and create a hyggekrog (a cozy nook) for relaxing. In Clothing – Opt for chunky knit sweaters, soft scarves, and warm socks. In Food – Enjoy slow-cooked meals, baked treats, and steaming cups of tea, cider, or cocoa. With Others – Keep gatherings small and meaningful, focusing on deep connection rather than large socializing. In Nature – Take a winter walk, enjoy stargazing under a blanket, or bring seasonal greenery indoors. The Hygge Manifesto: Turn Down the Lights – Use candles and soft lighting. Be Present – Put away distractions and focus on the moment. Indulge in Pleasure – Enjoy good food, warm drinks, and simple comforts. Share and Include – Embrace togetherness and make space for all. Practice Gratitude – Appreciate what's good in life. Embrace Harmony – No competition, just warmth and connection. Seek Comfort – Prioritize coziness in your surroundings. Final Thoughts:Hygge is more than just candles and sweaters—it's a mindset, a way of life that prioritizes warmth, presence, and joy. This winter, let's embrace hygge and transform the cold months into a season of comfort, connection, and simple pleasures. Suoraa puhetta johtaa Maria Pettersson. Keskustelijoina ovat Juha Itkonen, Anu Koivunen ja Kaarina Hazard. Juha Itkonen on tutkinut ensimmäistä kertaa julkistettua Sukupolvibarometria. Anu Koivunen kertoo hieman naurahtaen oman aiheensa.
To celebrate 100 episodes of The Voice of Early Childhood podcast we have a very special guest with us...the pioneering Professor Alison Clark. Best known for advocating for the voice of the child through her pioneering research with Professor Peter Moss on the Mosaic Approach: A participatory, multimethod approach of listening to young children's voices within qualitative research. Professor Alison Clark shares with us decades of important work and research that has resulted in the pioneering practice of slow pedagogy within early childhood. Throughout the episode we unpick the concept of ‘slow', from slow pedagogy and slow knowledge, to temporal and spatial thinking, the child's voice, gathering children's stories and collective memories, and much more. I'm thrilled to be joined today by Pernille Ripp — a passionate educator, author, and literacy advocate. She is the author of Passionate Readers: The Art of Reaching and Engaging Every Child, Passionate Learners: How to Engage and Empower Your Students, and Reimagining Literacy Through Global Collaboration. She's also the founder of the Global Read Aloud, a program that has connected millions of students and teachers around the world through the shared joy of reading. And for all of our benefit, Pernille is also a prolific sharer. After teaching in Wisconsin for over a decade, In her BlueSky re-introduction she noted she was “back living in Denmark because she needed to breathe a bit easier.” And she frequently posts about her experience in the Danish education system, “Fun fact about teaching at my Danish school,” she writes, “when we are sick, we're not required to write sub plans because we're sick.” And by most measures, Danes are among the happiest in the world, despite having among the highest tax rates. Healthcare and PreK-College education is free. Hygge conjures cozy seasonal vibes. Denmark has some of the highest public education participation and teacher pay and some of the lowest student:teacher ratios and class sizes among their OECD peers, including the United States. On a more grim note of comparison, the Wikipedia page for “school shootings in Denmark” contains a single entry from 1994, the only school shooting in Danish history. However, as a PDF, the list of school shootings in the United States since 2000 is 169 pages long with footnotes.Regular listeners of this show will know just how immediately all of this grabbed my attention. In the past we've had guests talk about their experiences with everything from the education system in Trinidad & Tobago to the national Chinese college entrance exam, so I am thrilled at the opportunity to dig into both American and Danish society and education systems with someone who has knowledge and experience in both.Pernille Ripp Bluesky Hosted on Acast. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“ Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“ Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Alexia is Canadian, but spent time living and working in Norway, where she has learned about some of the Scandinavian ways of life, including “Hygge”, the feeling of being cozy and content and slowing down to make space for the enjoyment of life. This principle has inspired Alexia in her private practice, and she incorporated these values into her daily sessions with clients, encouraging them to actively use gratitude where applicable in therapy. Join us for our cozy chat today about coming into therapy, working intentionally with principles in private practice, and how to find what works for you, whether it is work-life balance or marketing, and life beyond it. MEET ALEXIA Alexia Wensing is a registered psychotherapist who values the mind-body connection, emphasizing the importance of slowing down and optimizing mental health through physical wellness and fostering a healthy relationship with the body. She works with athletes, families of athletes, and individuals facing challenges such as anxiety, life transitions, and stress, utilizing a rooted, evidence-based approach to support clients. Learn more about Alexia on her practice website and Psychology Today profile. In this episode: Why Alexia decided to become a therapist Working in a hospital setting Starting a private practice Incorporating a Scandinavian lifestyle into private practice Marketing the private practice Going forward Why Alexia decided to become a therapist After completing undergrad, Alexia was interested in pursuing law and even studied for the LSAT exams for a brief period. She then pivoted into a more HR and cultural role in creating a healthy workplace environment for a few years, but again, she felt like something was still missing. Therefore, Alexia returned to university again to pursue her master's degree in Counselling Psychology. All of this experience had happened in Ontario, but in October 2020, Alexia decided to move to Norway. Working in a hospital setting Alexia worked as a psychotherapy intern. Even though Alexia appreciated her hospital work experience, it also taught her the tough lesson of having clients come and go, since that was the nature of working in a hospital. Starting a private practice After Alexia's practicum, she got a position at a multidisciplinary practice. Even though she loved working there and being a leader running the telehealth team, she had to have a tough conversation with her bosses about her going in the direction of opening up her own private practice. Incorporating a Scandinavian lifestyle into private practice The cultural way of living in Norway gave Alexia firsthand experience and a new perspective on approaching wellness, mindfulness, and a healthy type of comfort when facing life's challenges. She wanted to share the Hygge ‘vibe with other people, whether they were athletes or an individual struggling with a personal issue in life. Marketing the private practice Even though marketing can be tricky, it is necessary, because it is the way that you are putting the word of your practice out there into the community. You don't have to be “salesy”. You can be authentic, and genuine, and just want to let people know who you are, what you do, and how you can help them. Alexia uses Instagram, social media, and her website for marketing. To niche down her practice while simultaneously combining her experience, she brings in the ‘Hygge vibe' as branding for her private practice. Going forward Alexia is in Alberta now, considering expanding her practice, where she can continue to apply the Norwegian principles that she loves! Maintaining our balance whether we are holding a tree pose in yoga or riding a bicycle requires dynamic engagement. While the tree pose in yoga may look static, nope, it is actually dynamic as various muscles are engaged. Similarly and more visually obvious is riding a bicycle. We must remain in motion, and a motion that is balanced, so again engaging our motions to align with each other if there are multiple, in this case our two legs pedaling, to remain balanced. Balance in life involves a similar concept. We may not always look physically in motion, so for example, choosing time to just be, but we are engaged. We are present and consciously and purposefully engaging in an action or activity that nourishes our balance. In the first episode of the new year, I wanted to focus on this idea of balanced living as inspired by the book The Scandinavian Guide to Happiness: Balanced Living with Fika, Lagos, Hygge, and More by Tim Rayburn, because rather than focusing on adding or improving, why not focus on tweaking and putting more of a priority on savoring. The latter is what will improve the quality of our life in all arenas. So let's take a look at the list, and be sure to listen to the audio version for detailed conversation about each point.
