The phrase “whatever happens” doesn't conjure up visions of stability. When people say that - “whatever happens” - it's usually because something bad is going to happen. For the church at Philippi, this was the case. In his letter to the early church in that city, Paul understood that the political climate was going to get heated. The earliest Christians in Philippi were in all likelihood facing serious persecution for political reasons. Incredibly, within this context, the Apostle Paul (who himself was a Roman Citizen) tells this group of Christians that no matter what happens politically, that they were to remember that their citizenship is in Heaven and their King is not Caesar, but Jesus. This would have real implications for the way they lived their lives - but Paul's advice still rings true for believers down through the ages. Our political climate is marked by many things: outrage, fear, anxiety, concern. If there's one word that folks would NOT use it would be “peace.” It seems that settled peace is not often present. So how do we get that? Well, if the story of Jesus is any indication, Jesus not only is the Prince of Peace, not only brings peace, but invites His followers to be agents of peace in a world full of conflict. But this will not just *happen* - it's a work of grace that requires much of us, from listening well, to actively working for the good of those who consider us their enemies. But the words of Jesus say that peacemakers will be called sons and daughters of God, so his invitation to be peacemakers is an invitation to join the “family business” of God. SPEAKERS: Mark Averill (Saratoga), David Tieche (South Hills) Bible Passage(s): Matthew 5:43-48 NIV

PARTY CRASHER: How Jesus Disrupts Politics as Usual and Redeems our Partisan Divides | Pledge Allegiance to the King | October 27, 2024 In our current cultural moment, with a national election looming, the political divide feels as wide as it's ever been. Various political tribes present various visions of what will ultimately lead to society-wide flourishing. But Jesus is the ultimate Party Crasher, both affirming and confronting the various visions and inviting us to embrace a bold new vision of His Kingdom. In this series, we learn to live well in our polarized political world, in a way that can bring peace for the exhausted, courage for the anxious, comfort for the weary, and hope for all of us. For followers of Jesus, the fulfillment of hope and the path to true flourishing is found always and only when we pledge our allegiance to Christ alone. SPEAKERS: Jay Kim (Saratoga), video (South Hills)
Description: It's a pretty contentious political environment out there, often times with people shouting past each other. Sometimes, it seems that politics has become like a new religion. Jay and David dive into the ideas of Joshua Ryan Butler's book The Party Crasher. They explore the the four distinct political ideologies at play in our culture, and how understanding them can help us not only understand our own political leanings, but empathize and connect with others in different sectors. Speakers: David Tieche + Jay Kim
Hurricane: Experts warn that weather-related disinformation can rapidly escalate into real-world risks and distract from aid. Politics as Usual: Trump in CA, changing the election laws at the last minute and what people REALLY care about. October Delights: Election years are always stressful which is why Halloween is the perfect escape from reality. Our fears are manifested and dealt with through scary movies and haunted houses and then we get rewarded with candy! Don't want to worry about whether your proposition passes? Have a mini kit kat. Afraid the other candidate might win? That's terrifying but nothing like being chased by a chainsaw wielding undead woodsman. Perspective is everything. Food, Glorious Food: You are what you eat... and I'm a big fat purple lactating chicken breast.
Chris and Ken go deep into what if's concerning the country's future!

Politics as Usual: Shortly before Trump's announcement, the campaign blasted out a “confidential memorandum” claiming that its internal polling had showed the Republican nominee gaining two percentage points on Harris among likely voters across seven unidentified “target states.” State and local election officials from across the country on Wednesday warned that problems with the nation's mail delivery system threaten to disenfranchise voters in the upcoming presidential election, telling the head of the U.S. Postal Service that it hasn't fixed persistent deficiencies. Far Out: A tech billionaire performed the first private spacewalk hundreds of miles above Earth on Thursday, a high-risk endeavor reserved for professional astronauts — until now. Economy Stupid: According to the Labor Department, housing prices remain a top issue and the cooldown can be felt in food prices and energy costs.

Politics as Usual: Politics are stupid. We have less than 2 months to go. Does ANYBODY honestly believe we'll know who the President Elect will be come the morning of November 6th? The Kids These Days: Gen Z workers are expected to outnumber baby boomers in the U.S. workforce this year. If only their bosses could understand them. Career Cushioning: 70% of workers reported they are taking steps to prepare for layoffs such as putting more money into savings or regularly browsing job listings. Coffee Badging: The traditional American 9-to-5 has shifted to 10-to-4, according to the 2023 Global Traffic Scorecard released in June by INRIX Inc., a traffic-data analysis firm.

Politics as Usual: Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s much-spoiled exit from the presidential race won't pack the same pop as if he'd done it earlier this summer.Kennedy averaged 15.5% in general election polls on July 1, per Nate Silver's model. Now he's around 4%.Kennedy's plunging relevancy and bizarre news cycles raises doubts on how many votes he can really move to former President Trump's column. Young Money: While millennials may still struggle financially day-to-day, however, many of them have rosier long-term prospects thanks to “phantom wealth.” That's how a Wall Street Journal report describes their considerable wealth that's stored away in illiquid assets like houses and retirement accounts. Parental Responsibility: A city in Orange County has a plan to hold parents responsible for damages and crimes committed by e-bikers as emails about their bad behavior mount. The Mayor of San Clemente said the crackdown on e-bikes is necessary because unsafe riders are creating dangerous situations on the streets. Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: NASA decided Saturday it's too risky to bring two astronauts back to Earth in Boeing's troubled new capsule, and they'll have to wait until next year for a ride home with SpaceX. What should have been a weeklong test flight for the pair will now last more than eight months.

Suge starts off this episode by diving into the promise he saw in Nate Dogg's talent from the moment they met. He later gives details on little-known aspects of J-Lo and Diddy's past relationship and how they may be affecting J-Lo's current relationship with Ben Affleck. Suge discusses the fact that Black folks make up just 8% of the total population in Los Angeles, but make up 34% of the homeless population. Suge takes the time out to weigh in on the migrant-crisis that is currently plaguing the United States, and points out that programs like CAPI provide immediate relief to immigrants while many Blacks struggle to qualify for similar help. He comments on sacrifices he made to try to create a better, more equitable climate in the music industry, while urging today's artists to stop beefing with each other and come together to form a union so real change can take place. Suge also gives tips to the ladies for dealing with men who don't recognize their proper worth. This episode is sponsored by Earnin. Download Earnin today in the Google Play or Apple app store. The process of creating laws is under new scrutiny after a political ally of Gov. Gavin Newsom – the owner of the Panera Bread chain – appeared to benefit from an exemption in a new state law taking effect next month that will raise the hourly wages of fast food workers to $20 an hour. Finding out exactly how the exemption got into the legislation was complicated after it was revealed that a major labor union required negotiators working on the bill to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement. Now a Republican lawmaker is trying to ban NDAs in lawmaking. Scott talks with Chris Micheli, a registered lobbyist and former general counsel for the California Manufacturers Association, about the use of NDAs in drafting state legislation.

Immigration and management of the U.S. Southern Border is always a politically charged issue, but especially at this moment. House republicans are trying to advance articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. They say he has refused to comply with the law and has breached the trust of the public.Meanwhile President Biden is describing the U.S. immigration system as broken. All this is playing out as a government funding bill is tied to the border and a presidential election is months away.
