Summary Robert Gates (Website; Website) joins Andrew (Twitter; LinkedIn) to reflect on the 75th Anniversary of the CIA. He served 8 U.S. presidents.  What You'll Learn Intelligence His reflections on the CIA at 75 How the CIA's story intersected with his own   His take on the organization's strengths and weaknesses  The complex intl. environment the CIA must now help America navigate Reflections Twists of fate Identity and institutions  And much, much more… Episode Notes Robert M. Gates is the first career officer in the CIA's history to rise from entry level employee to Director. He spent 27 years at CIA, nine of those at the NSC. More recently, he was the first Secretary of Defense to be asked to remain in office by a newly elected president. In all, he served 8 presidents.  Wouldn't you love to know his take on the CIA at 75? Well, we've made that happen for you! He was born in Wichita, Kansas, served in the U.S.A.F. and he received his undergraduate education at William & Mary, his masters from Indiana University, and his doctorate from Georgetown University. He was formerly the President of Texas A&M University and the current Chancellor of William & Mary.  And… The academic institutions Dr. Gates has been associated with all have quite different capacities of football stadium: Georgetown University's Cooper Field can hold 3,750; William & Mary's Zable Stadium can hold 12,259; Indiana University's Memorial Stadium can hold 52,626; and Texas A&M's Kyle Stadium can hold a whopping 102,733. What could we infer about Dr. Gates, college sports, or the United States from this information? Well, that would be thinking like an intelligence analyst. Quote of the Week "I've led four very big, very different institutions and like all of them I always saw where places where CIA could be better. But I always loved the place, and I always was proud to work there and proud of the people that I knew…they were probably the smartest, most honest people I've ever met and worked with." – Robert Gates. On April 26 and 27, 2019, seven months before Jeremy Corbyn led the British Labour party to unexpected defeat in a general election, the Raymond Williams Society held its annual conference. Now, in July 2024, as Keir Starmer celebrates a landslide victory for the Labour party, and a new Labour government prepares its long-term agenda, we present a completely re-edited and remixed look at the session on cultural democracy. The conference addressed the topic: Cultural Production and the Redundancy of Work: precarity, automation and critique. The Movement for Cultural Democracy organised a panel at the conference and Sophie Hope, Nick Mahony and Stephen Pritchard spoke at it. In this episode Sophie Hope describes some of the context to Owen Kelly, and we listen to live recordings of Nick and Stephen's presentations. Nick Mahony's presentation, “Realising Cultural Democracy”, provides a historical background for the growth of the Movement for Cultural Democracy. He draws a link between the writing of Raymond Williams in The Long Revolution and the birth of this current manifestation of a movement for cultural democracy that began at The World Transformed in Liverpool, in September 2017. Stephen Pritchard reflects on his childhood in Jarrow in a performance style lecture that uses video and archival sound recordings as part of the presentation. The presentation, “Home Is Where We Start From”, has a poetic air that weaves in critiques of the way working class culture has been deliberately co-opted or dismantled; and the ways in which gentrification and art-washing continue to attempt to do this.

Build a Better Business Book: How to Plan, Write, and Promote a Book That Matters. A Comprehensive Guide for Authors by Josh Bernoff About the Book: Your brain burns with a powerful idea worth sharing. Could writing a business book spread that idea, create real change, and launch your career on the path to visibility and influence? Definitely. But don't start by piling up words. Instead, focus on the story. What urgent problem does your reader face? How can they solve it? And what journey must your readers take as you guide them from confusion to understanding, action, and success? Build a Better Business Book is the first accessible and comprehensive guide for authors who want to create impact. Josh Bernoff, a bestselling author, veteran editor, and insightful writing coach with decades of experience on 45 successful book projects, explains the systematic way to refine your idea and then research, write, publish, and promote a book that matters. Learn how to: Build your book not just from ideas but from people and their compelling stories — and how you can research and tell those stories. Write a first chapter that creates powerful motivation by emotionally connecting with readers. Select among the three major publishing models — traditional, self-publishing, and “hybrid” — on the axes of speed, cost, and influence. Plan your book as a project, then efficiently execute that plan with a low-stress, high-potency tool: the fat outline. Structure chapters that no reader can put down. Collaborate with coauthors, editors, and ghostwriters without excessive bloodshed. Promote your book to maximize your sales, revenue, and influence. Josh Bernoff's book projects have generated over $20 million for their authors. This guide includes the results of an extensive author survey and secrets from interviews with successful business authors like Jay Baer, Laura Gassner Otting, Phil M. Jones, Joe Pulizzi, and Scott Stratten. Don't waste valuable energy without accomplishing your goals. Construct your business book as a compelling story, and you won't just get your words in print. You'll create change in the minds of your readers. And that is the first step to making a meaningful impact on the world. About the Author: Josh Bernoff is an expert on how business books can propel thinkers to prominence. Book projects on which he has collaborated have generated over $20 million for their authors. Josh's previous book was Writing Without Bullshit: Boost Your Career by Saying What You Mean (HarperBusiness, 2016). Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Investing for a World Transformed by AI, published by PeterMcCluskey on January 1, 2023 on LessWrong. AI looks likely to cause major changes to society over the next decade. Financial markets have mostly not reacted to this forecast yet. I expect it will be at least a few months, maybe even years, before markets have a large reaction to AI. I'd much rather buy too early than too late, so I'm trying to reposition my investments this winter to prepare for AI. This post will focus on scenarios where AI reaches roughly human levels sometime around 2030 to 2035, and has effects that are at most 10 times as dramatic as the industrial revolution. I'm not confident that such scenarios are realistic. I'm only saying that they're plausible enough to affect my investment strategies. Companies working on AI Google's DeepMind seems a bit more likely than any other company to produce valuable AI. That's a good enough reason to hold a modest position in Google. TPU and Waymo are additional AI-related reasons for holding Google stock. OpenAI is a serious contender. Microsoft has a $1 billion stake in OpenAI. But profits from that seem to be capped at 100x, so the best case scenario seems to be that Microsoft shareholders get $13.40 per share from that stake. Maybe Microsoft will invest more in OpenAI. I only see Microsoft getting a modest boost from AI. Conjecture sounds quite promising. I offered to invest $100k in them this summer. They don't seem interested in investments that small. There are other new private companies that I haven't been able to evaluate. Here are some that seem worth paying some attention to: Adept Anthropic Bubble City Character Cohere Inflection AI Keen Technologies That's a dramatic pace of new startups being founded that look potentially important. VC's seem to have been throwing enough money at them in mid-2022 that they likely had little reason to talk to more ordinary investors such as myself. Investment in such startups has maybe cooled slightly now that FTX has stopped throwing money at them, but I'm guessing it hasn't cooled much. I see a 50% chance that one or more of these new startups will make DeepMind and OpenAI irrelevant. I have little hope of being able to buy a diversified portfolio of such startups, so I don't expect to profit from direct investments in companies working on AI. Computing Hardware Companies The most promising investments involve the hardware needed to power AI. That mostly means semiconductors. Semiconductor capital equipment companies seem more promising than companies that are more directly involved in making chips, as capital equipment is more cyclical, and less dependent on specific uses. My current semiconductor-related investments are (in alphabetic order): AMKR, AOSL, ASML, ASYS, KLAC, MTRN, LSE:SMSN, TRT. I'm likely to buy more sometime in 2023, but I'm being patient because we're likely at a poor part of an industry cycle. Others that I'm considering buying: ACLS, AMAT, INTC, LRCX, MU, and PLAB. Some of you will be surprised that I didn't suggest NVDA. Its PE and price/sales ratio are high compared to my other semiconductor investments. I can imagine buying it if its stock price drops relative to other semiconductor stocks. But I suspect its fans underestimate the risk of competition from hardware that is optimized more specifically for deep learning. I've invested in privately held Fathom Radiant, which seems to have a shot at NVIDIA-like success in AI-related hardware. I'm unsure whether they'll want any more investment in 2023. I've seen some noise about neuromorphic computing. I suspect that such research is far enough from commercialization that it's hard to figure out how to invest in it. (Also, I'm nervous about helping to speed up AI, as it's already coming fast enough to worry me.) I have a tiny position i...

The book provides a much-needed and comprehensive critique of recent US national security policies in both the Trump and Biden administrations. These policy decisions have produced a series of costly disappointments and outright failures that have destroyed the lives of hundreds of thousands around the world and cost US taxpayers astronomical sums of money. Today marks the 24th anniversary of one of the most notorious anti-gay hate crimes in American history. Beaten, tortured, and left for dead, 21-year-old Matthew Shepard was found tied to a fence in a remote field near Laramie, Wyoming. Irreparable damage to his brain stem left Matthew in a coma, and he never regained consciousness.  Shepard's case sparked a national and international conversation about sexual orientation as a motive for murder, and inspired hate crime legislation at the state and federal level, but somehow Matthew's story got lost in the headlines.   Writing and research by Aurora Cady.Original music and audio production by Louis Levesque. For inquiries: louis14levesque@gmail.comF O L L O W  U S ! ! !I N S T A G R A M -- @murdermurdernewsT W I T T E R --  @mmurdernewsF A C E B O O K -- https://www.facebook.com/mmntruecrime/T I K T O K -- @murdermurdernewsY O U T U B E -- MurderMurder NewsJoin our Facebook Group | to chat about true crime, and to join our virtual book club!Join us on the Picnic app | to chat with us about the cases that fascinate you!Use our link to sign up for 25% off Nuna - Our fave app for mental well-being!Use code MM15 to get 15% off a single-day or weekend ticket to PNW True Crime Fest!Check out MurderMurder.news for the latest breaking true crime news! For business inquiries: murdermurdernews@gmail.comSubmit a  spooky story: https://murdermurder.news/story-submission-form/---LINKS + SOURCES:Film:Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine (2014)Book:'The Meaning of Matthew: My Son's Murder in Laramie, and a World Transformed' by Judy Shepardhttps://www.matthewshepard.org/https://www.vanityfair.com/news/1999/13/matthew-shepard-199903https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Shepardhttps://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1300/J041v13n01_02?journalCode=wgls20https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/2003/07/13/honor-thy-son/b193b7c9-2a2e-4fa7-bf5c-2f1e6edc6b12/http://shorturl.at/cyLPZhttps://www.episcopalchurch.org/who-we-are/lgbtq/history/https://indexarticles.com/reference/advocate-the/the-lost-brother-murder-of-matthew-shepard-2/https://www.wyohistory.org/encyclopedia/murder-matthew-shepardhttps://www.nytimes.com/1998/11/21/us/witnesses-trace-brutal-killing-of-gay-student.htmlhttps://abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=277685&page=1https://worldqueerstory.org/tag/aaron-kreifels/ https://web.archive.org/web/20110606223846/http://dir.salon.com/story/news/feature/1999/11/06/witness/index.htmlHeadlines:https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/moors-murders-keith-bennett-ian-brady-myra-hindley-b2190185.htmlhttps://www.examinerlive.co.uk/news/local-news/who-russell-edwards-amateur-detective-25152005 https://www.foxnews.com/us/colorado-man-arrested-connection-attempted-child-kidnapping-turned-own-parSupport the show

Our interview with Professor James Walvin, author of the new book A World Transformed: Slavery in the Americas and the Origins of Global Power. Professor Walvin discusses working on the history of enslavement over the past four decades and his most recent work, in which he explores how the brutal enforced transportation and labour of millions of Africans continues to have significant consequences today. Slavery shaped many of the dominant features of Western taste: items and habits or rare and costly luxuries, some of which might seem, at first glance, utterly removed from the horrific reality of slavery. Dr. Walvin traces the global impacts of slavery over centuries, far beyond its legal or historical endpoints, arguing that the world created by slave labour lives on today. Content warning: This episode contains discussions of child abduction, physical coercion, racism, human trafficking, and child abuse which some listeners may find distressing.

From one of the leading intellectuals of the digital age, The Digital Republic: On Freedom and Democracy in the 21st Century (Pegasus Books, 2022) is the definitive guide to the great political question of our time: how can freedom and democracy survive in a world of powerful digital technologies? A Financial Times “Book to Read” in 2022. Not long ago, the tech industry was widely admired, and the internet was regarded as a tonic for freedom and democracy. Not anymore. Every day, the headlines blaze with reports of racist algorithms, data leaks, and social media platforms festering with falsehood and hate. In The Digital Republic, acclaimed author Jamie Susskind argues that these problems are not the fault of a few bad apples at the top of the industry. They are the result of our failure to govern technology properly. The Digital Republic charts a new course. It offers a plan for the digital age: new legal standards, new public bodies and institutions, new duties on platforms, new rights and regulators, new codes of conduct for people in the tech industry. Inspired by the great political essays of the past, and steeped in the traditions of republican thought, it offers a vision of a different type of society: a digital republic in which human and technological flourishing go hand in hand. Jamie Susskind is a barrister and the author of the award-winning bestseller Future Politics: Living Together in a World Transformed by Tech (Oxford University Press, 2018), which received the Estoril Global Issues Distinguished Book Prize 2019, and was an Evening Standard and Prospect Book of the Year. United States troops are now pulling out of Afghanistan, bringing to a close America's longest war. U.S. intelligence predicts that the Taliban will take over the country within six months, returning the country to much way we found it when we invaded following the 9/11 attacks. Since 2001, the Global War on Terror in Afghanistan, Iraq and Pakistan has resulted in the deaths of 800,000 people, including 7,000 Americans, while spawning terror groups including ISIS and other jihadi organizations. “We've had a bipartisan penchant for militarism, and it hasn't worked,” argues Andrew Bacevich, a Vietnam veteran and leading foreign policy critic. “If all these interventions resulted in a more secure and prosperous United States of America, an international order that was more peaceful, more prosperous, I would say, well, maybe militarism works," he says on The Vermont Conversation. "But that hasn't been the case. The consequences have been strikingly negative. Estimates of total U.S. expenditures since 9/11 are something on the order of $7 trillion. For what? And let's not talk about the numbers [of people] killed. It's been a catastrophe.” America's endless wars have been justified by the often-repeated assertion of its leaders that we alone can solve the world's problems, our causes are always righteous, and when things go wrong, well, it wasn't our fault. As Dick Cheney famously reassured us in 2003 when the U.S. invaded Iraq, “We will be greeted as liberators.” Nearly two decades later, American troops are still dying in Iraq. Bacevich calls for NATO to be disbanded and for the U.S. to pursue a strategy of "sustainable self-sufficiency." He writes: "Rather than relentlessly pursuing a way of life based on consumption and waste, it means taking seriously a collective obligation to bequeath a livable planet to future generations. It means embracing some version of the proposed Green New Deal... [This] just might enable a government accustomed to squandering lives and dollars to become a government that nurtures and preserves." Bacevich is a regular guest analyst on network and cable news and a frequent contributor to the Washington Post, New York Times, and the American Conservative. He is a graduate of West Point, served 23 years in the US Army and is a professor emeritus of history and international relations at Boston University. Bacevich is president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. His new book is After the Apocalypse: America's Role in a World Transformed.
