Hello EIComrades, happy Pride month
Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defense and former Fox News weekend co-host, is facing mounting scrutiny across three major stories that broke in a single day. Hegseth has classified the Pentagon press area, effectively barring journalists from accessing public affairs officials, a move that is expected to face legal challenges after courts have already ruled against him multiple times for restricting press access. A federal appeals court blocked Trump and Hegseth's transgender military ban in a scathing 107-page opinion written by Judge Robert Wilkins, who found the policy arbitrary, demeaning, and unsupported by any factual basis, noting that transgender service members have served honorably and pose no threat to national security. The New York Times reported that Hegseth personally intervened in a slate of 22 Navy admiral promotions, blocking candidates who are disproportionately Black and female, actions that current and former defense officials say appear to violate the merit-based, apolitical promotion process. Welcome to the Monday Breakfast Show, on the show this week we had: Headlines: Violence against Flotilla participants draws international pressure on IsraelCongo Ebola Outbreak and death toll higher than official reports - From the archives: for the 21st anniversary broadcast of National Sorry Day, 3CR's Radioactive Show aired an interview between Aunty Hazel Collins, one of the founders of Grandmothers Against Removals, originally played by the Central Australia Aboriginal Media Association with host Teghan Hughes. Grandmothers Against Removal are an organisation working on the frontlines to prevent children from being removed from their families and creating yet another stolen generation. Aunty Hazel Collins and Teghan speak about the injustices faced by children who are removed from their families by the colonial government. The interview starts by addressing comments aired on Sunrise in March 2018 in which they implied that the Stolen Generation was necessary and needed to happen again. GMAR is holding a rally they've organised on Tuesday at 10AM outside Preston Town Hall calling for the end of child removals. From Pete Hegseth's erasure of Black Americans and women from military history, to Donald Trump's dismantling of DEI programs across the federal government, to Stephen Miller's openly stated goal of ethnic cleansing, Hawk connects the dots between policy and intent. The firing of hundreds of thousands of Black federal workers, the targeting of universities and corporations with DEI policies, and the Supreme Court's systematic gutting of the Voting Rights Act are all part of the same pattern. Chief Justice John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito have spent decades working to eradicate the Voting Rights Act, the landmark 1965 legislation that Hawk argues represented the first true moment the United States became a functioning representative democracy. That legacy is now being dismantled in real time. Hawk makes the case that in 2026, there is no longer any reasonable argument that a Trump voter is not fully aware of what they are supporting. Racism, misogyny, bigotry, homophobia, and transphobia were not hidden in the 2024 campaign — they were the campaign. If the shoe fits, it fits. Award-winning historian Jules Gill-Peterson examines transgender identity and politics through the lens of American liberalism, arguing that anti-transgender politics cannot be understood by analyzing conservatism alone. She traces the emergence of transgender identity from middle-class cross-dressing cultures, the development of transgender medicine, and the class tensions surrounding transition. Gill-Peterson connects this history to U.S. v. Skrmetti, the vulnerability of transition-related health care, and what she describes as liberal discomfort with dysphoria and changing sex. She calls for a politics centered on defending transsexual people and a right to transition. Series: "UC Berkeley Graduate Lectures" [Public Affairs] [Show ID: 41447]

Two years after her untimely death, Cecilia Gentili remains a legendary trans icon. As International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia approaches, we celebrate it by revisiting our conversation with Gentili. In 2022 she spoke to Latino USA about her memoir, “Faltas,” written as a series of letters to people in her hometown in Argentina. Cecilia goes back to her youth, growing up in the 1970s and 80s, a time when few people in her community understood her gender expression. She also recalls the people who healed her, like her grandmother, and others who hurt her. Latino USA is the longest-running news and culture radio program in the U.S., centering Latino stories and hosted by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Maria Hinojosa. Sometimes, tall women are misgendered. There are quite a few stories around this, ranging from being called ‘sir' to literally being asked straight up ‘Are you a man?' Now, why does this happen? Height = masculinity…to some people. Because it's a desirable physical trait associated with men. Most people typically apologize and go about their lives normally when they find out that a tall cisgender woman is, in fact, a cisgender woman and not transgender, but not all interactions are that way. Yes, there are some arguments and maybe physical altercations going on. In today's episode, we'll discuss the misgendering of tall women, where transphobia comes into play, and a few stories/experiences from tall women. Tune in for more! Candace Owens has released a multi-part "investigative" series called "The Bride of Charlie," targeting Erica Kirk, the widow of Charlie Kirk who now runs Turning Point USA. The first two episodes racked up nearly 6 million views within 36 hours on YouTube alone, where Owens has 5.8 million subscribers. The reach goes far beyond her subscriber base, with YouTube and other platform algorithms actively pushing her content to audiences who would never seek it out on their own. Owens previously produced a similar series making accusations about Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, alleging she is transgender. Those claims have been widely debunked, and the Macrons have filed a defamation lawsuit against Owens that is currently pending. Given the scope of her audience and the demonstrably false nature of the claims, the financial damages in that case could reach tens of millions of dollars. The "Bride of Charlie" series opens with Owens questioning Erica Kirk's qualifications to lead Turning Point USA and draws comparisons between accepting Kirk as a grieving widow and pandemic-era messaging, while invoking "Zionist media" conspiracy language. Owens has also previously alleged that Israel arranged Charlie Kirk's assassination. Charlie Kirk built Turning Point USA into an organization reportedly raising over $250 million in 2024, with a mission centered on reaching young people on college campuses. The broader pattern of right-wing media, from Owens to Tucker Carlson, consistently circles back to antisemitism, transphobia, racism, and bigotry, now amplified at scale by algorithms pushing that content directly to young audiences. The state of Kansas recently passed legislation effectively erasing the legal identity of transgender residents by invalidating their driver's licenses, a development Hawk connects directly to the years of anti-trans content being produced and distributed by creators like Owens. Jonny and Heather offer an overview of trends from 2025, linking the hard lessons learned about AI to the hard lessons learned from the first year of Trump 2.0. In the back half of the show, they turn a prophetic gaze toward the future and make some broad predictions for 2026. They dare to hope that after all of the suffering the world might actually be learning to be a little less phobic toward human diversity.

America Isn't the Country You Think It Is | Karel Cast 25-121 America loves to call itself the “greatest country in the world”—but the numbers tell a different story. Over 350 mass shootings this year, a wannabe tyrant in the Oval Office, and a Supreme Court that props up a far-right agenda. 70% of our infrastructure is outdated, we lack public transportation, and universal health care is still a dream—while we remain #1 for medical bankruptcies. The reality? 80% of Americans don't have enough to retire. Care homes are broken, healthcare for aging is inadequate, and hatred—racism, homophobia, transphobia—runs rampant. Add to that endless wars and drug epidemics, and the myth of “American greatness” crumbles. So here's the question: are we ignoring reality because the truth is too painful to face?

For pride month, the girlies mount a defense against one of the largest threats to queer people today: transphobia. They trace the long history of trans existence and its erasure, unpack how moral panic is used to justify control, why transphobia exists on both the right and the left, and how the freedom to live outside the binary can liberate us from other systems of oppression. Digressions include: the highs and lows of plant parenthood, our no-phone summer so far, and a new candy shaking up the scene.
