Twitter, Social Media, Quotes, Excellence, Listening   Summary   The challenge of communicating effectively on Twitter can actually help us to be better communicators. We'll look at that in our Thought of the Day. Then in the second segment, we'll look at a few powerful tweets and then expound on them a bit in order to attain an even deeper understanding. That and more on today's show.   Bob's Thought of the Day   We'll explore:   Why Twitter can be a hotbed for misunderstanding, hurt feelings, and an insult or two. The importance of caring enough to ask ourselves how what we are about to say (and how we are about to say it) will likely be interpreted by the other person. Why we must train ourselves to communicate in a way that works for everyone involved.    Segment 2   You'll discover several timeless, wisdom-filled quotes and why they are so powerful:   "Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you." –Ruth Bader Ginsburg, former United States Supreme Court Justice "Excellence is not an ‘aspiration.' Excellence is not a 'hill to climb.' Excellence is the next five minutes. Or it is nothing at all.” –Tom Peters, author of The Excellence Dividend "The older I grow the more apt I am to doubt my own judgment." –Benjamin Franklin, inventor, printer, and United States diplomat Click to Tweet   The challenge of communicating effectively on Twitter can actually help us to become better communicators. Today's interview is with Tom Peters, author of numerous business books (18 in total) and speaker. He is, perhaps, best known for his 1982 seminal book: In Search of Excellence (co-authored with Robert H. Waterman Jr). This is the second time that Tom has been on the podcast. The first time was in 2018 (Striving for excellence has never been more important) where we talked about his latest book: The Excellence Dividend: Meeting the Tech Tide with Work That Wows and Jobs That Last. Today he joins me to talk about the need for Extreme Humanization given the situation we currently find ourselves in and a couple of pieces that he has recently penned: Excellence Manifesto 2020: The Twenty-Nine “Number Ones” and Excellence 2020 Observations Leading With Compassion And Care In Troubled Times. This interview follows on from my recent interview – A lot of enterprise software is still eye-wateringly terrible and it's acting like a handbrake on experience improvement efforts – Interview with Leon Gauhman of Elsewhen – and is number 348 in the series of interviews with authors and business leaders that are doing great things, providing valuable insights, helping businesses innovate and delivering great service and experience to both their customers and their employees.

S2E22 - Bill Sheridan | Becoming Future-Proof

Change Your Mindset

Bill Sheridan is the Chief Communications Officer at the Maryland Association of CPAs and the host of Future-Proof, a podcast in which Bill has interviewed a wide variety of leading thought leaders in the accounting profession and in corporate America. We discuss whether the profession is moving in the direction of becoming more future-proof, or future-ready, through the lens of the conversations he’s been having with his guests for nearly a year. So, let’s get right to it: is the profession future-proof? The short answer is no, we're not future-proof or future-ready yet – but we're getting there. However, we might be getting there a little slower than Bill and the other folks over at the MACPA hoped. “It seems like they're starting to realize that this stuff is real. It's not going away. In fact, it's starting to impact them right now, and they need to pay attention to it. So, that's encouraging that they are starting to pay attention,” Bill says. And in a way, this seeming reluctant to look forward makes sense for the accounting and finance profession. “When you think about the profession itself, accounting and finance will spend their entire careers looking behind them. By definition, they're accounting for things that have happened in the past. “So, turning around, and looking through the windshield, and noticing what's coming at you, isn't a muscle that they've spent a lot of time building. And so, they're just starting to do that now. And the more they do it, the better they'll get at it.” Becoming future-ready starts with being aware of what's going on. It comes back to the idea of the anticipatory organization, an idea championed by MACPA President and CEO Tom Hood. In this sense, anticipation a three-step process: aware, predict, and adapt.  So, first step, being aware of change. That involves asking questions and start to understanding it. Next is predicting what will happen. So, now that I'm aware of it, what kind of impact is this going to have on me and the people that I work with? And then, finally, adapting. What can we actually do about it? For example, here's a question for accounting and finance pros out there: how can you take advantage of 5G in a way that will benefit the people that you work with?  “That's the muscle that we have to start building. We know this is coming, and in very short order. So, what are the opportunities embedded in something like that? And we need to start thinking about that now before it hits mainstream and evolves into something else.” So becoming anticipatory is the practice of building that muscle – because change is going to happen over and over. “We need to be able to help walk our clients and customers into the future. In order to do that, we need to be there before them,” Bill says. Change Your Mindset is now being distributed on C-Suite Radio. In today's hyper-competitive market in which technology is eating jobs, what sets the successful companies and workers apart from the ones that flounder? My guest today argues it could be something as little as saying hello and helping an old lady with her wheelchair.  His name is Tom Peters, and he's a business expert and the author of several books on professional success. His latest is The Excellence Dividend: Meeting the Tech Tide With Work That Wows and Jobs That Last.  Today on the show, Tom and I discuss why the human touch and striving for excellence is what will give companies and workers an advantage in today's market. Tom shares why execution beats strategy in business and in life, how companies can develop a culture of excellence, and why the businesses that put customers first win in the long run. Tom then makes the impassioned case that business managers should see themselves as “coaches of excellence” and that they have more of an impact on the lives of people than we give them credit for.
