In this episode of the Great Trials Podcast, host Steve Lowry interviews trial lawyers Brian Brown and E.J. Hammond from Brown and Baron in Baltimore, Maryland. They discuss a complex case involving the tragic death of 83-year-old Helen Hansford at Largo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The episode highlights their strategic legal maneuvers, including the successful exclusion of the defense's medical expert, and the compelling testimony that led to an $8.5 million verdict for Hansford's estate. Remember to rate and review GTP on Apple Podcasts: Click Here to Rate and Review Case Details: In June 2020, when Helen first came to Largo Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Prince George's County, she weighed 112 pounds. She had previously been hospitalized after a bad fall, so she needed around-the-clock care. Upon admission, it was noted that she was at risk for falls, pressure injuries (bed sores), malnutrition, and “failing to thrive” (unsafe weight loss and related complications). By October, Helen's weight was reported to be around 95 pounds. Months later, in January 2021, her weight had plummeted to just 81 pounds, which is about 72% of what it was before. Amid Helen's weight loss crisis, Largo staff failed to put her back on the blood thinner medication that she needed after a surgery related to her fall. In February 2021, a blood clot went to her lungs and brain, causing her to pass away. Read Full Bio Brian Brown Brian S. Focus on your clients...or someone else will.Gear Up for GrowthWith Jean CaragherFor CPA TrendlinesBill Sheridan, chief communications officer at the Maryland Association of CPAs, believes CPA firms must embrace change to stay competitive. As technology automates compliance work, firms that focus on client advisory services will be the ones that thrive. “Our clients' expectations are changing, and they are looking for more than just traditional compliance services,” Sheridan says. “The firms that recognize this shift and focus on client advisory services will be the ones that thrive.”Gear Up for Growth spotlights the best strategies for smart and efficient growth in today's competitive landscape. Instead, it is creating opportunities for professionals to enhance their roles.“Technology isn't the biggest threat to CPA firms,” Sheridan explains. “The real danger is failing to prioritize client relationships.” He drew a powerful comparison to the retail industry: “Amazon didn't kill retail—bad customer service did. The same applies to CPAs. If we stop being client-focused, we'll become irrelevant.”

Allie Coyle is the head coach of the Montgomery Blair Boys Soccer Varsity team. Over the last 3 years as the head coach of the Varsity Boys Soccer, she has led the team to numerous titles including: 2x County Division Champions (2022, 2023), 2x Maryland 4A Region Champions (2022, 2024), Maryland 4A Semifinalist (2022), and, most recently, Maryland 4A State Champions (2024). Through numerous injuries as an athlete that required multiple surgeries, she learned that it doesn't matter how bad you get knocked down, what matters is how you get up. She knew her teammates needed her, and she needed them. While working as a teacher as an adult, a group of boys lost their coach mid-season and approached her to help. By saying yes and showing up for them, they began to show up for each other. Allie instilled her refusal to take no for an answer coupled with a culture a positivity. The outcome is remarkable. Coyle became the first female of a boys' soccer team to win the State Championship in the state of Maryland. This fall she not only brought in the coveted trophy but earned the title of Maryland's Large Public High School Coach of the Year by the Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer, as well as the Boys Soccer Coach of the Year from the Washington Post's All Met. @coach.coyle, @montblairsoccer

Her story is a testament to the power of early inspiration and leadership support.Ellison-Taylor emphasizes the critical need for the accounting profession to craft and share better narratives. “We have to tell a better story, but we also have to have a better story to tell,” she says, quoting Jen Wilson of the National Pipeline Advisory Group. Her own career was shaped by leaders who encouraged her to seize opportunities, provided constructive feedback, and championed her growth.

What steps can you take to get comfortable with being successful in your career AND being a parent? Is it even possible to do both, and do it well? Are you ready to let go of mom guilt and stop comparing yourself to others? In this episode of the Heartful Parent Podcast, I'm talking about it all with Megan Whiteside. Megan is a friend, a colleague, and a remarkable mom of four who is breaking down barriers for women in the law field. Megan is unapologetically shattering norms and reshaping perceptions around working motherhood. She is sharing the importance of setting boundaries and finding the people who are “her people” while leaving the rest behind. Megan shares the importance of learning to name her core values and how thoughtwork was the big shift she needed to start finding fulfillment in both motherhood and her professional life––at the same time. You will walk away from this episode feeling inspired and encouraged, and hopefully being able to find the same fulfillment that Megan shares. If you could use some help with your core values, I'd love to support you with some parent coaching or see you in The Heartful Parent Academy, where your Values Trio is one of the first things we work on. Foundational to a successful exit plan for most business owners we work with is having their business increase in value – so that when they go to get the value out there is enough net of taxes to do everything they want to do next. And foundational to building value as well as protecting the value of a business, is the use of technology. What technology, when to upgrade or change it how and when to implement it particularly in light of a planned exit timeline or departure date. And with new developments like AI and growing risks like cyber crime…it's only going to become more and more foundational even to the smallest businesses.Want to learn more? Much of what we talk about here pertains to building or accelerating the value of your business, and though also how to protect the value of your business. It's not enough to focus on revenue growth and profitability as a business owner who wants to exit successfully you also have to continually manage risks to the value and health of your business. And with the ever changing times we live in the risks to be managed are continually changing and keeping up with these changing risks can be difficult particularly when there is a need to focus on things like revenue growth and profitability. So we try to provide some help each year in doing that, and that's going to be our focus in this episode and one or two more here at the start of a new year. Many if not most of the business owners we work with want to sell or transfer their business to children or key employees – what we would call a sale to insiders. For many reasons, this can take years to accomplish but because of the owners goals, objectives, and desires, it can be the exit route that makes the most sense for their situation. One of the major initiatives or actions that can take a long time is to train and equip your successor or successors to be owners.Successors typically become candidates for ownership because they have proven to be exceptional and key employees – they've been good at their job or jobs and they really seem to care about the business. But, as you business owners listening understand there is much more to being a business owner than there is a key employee.DISCLAIMER: The information in this presentation is provided as education only, with the understanding that neither the presenter nor ENNIS Legacy Partners or GRF CPAs & Advisors is engaged to render legal, accounting, or other professional services. Designed to identify the least expensive solution to a nationwide lead paint and dust problem, the study monitored blood lead levels in children under 4 years of age who were living in homes with unhealthy levels of poisonous lead dust. Ashley was too old to be an official test subject but was still exposed to high levels of lead dust through the study. As a result of her exposure, Ashley suffers from permanent brain damage and struggles with learning disabilities and behavior issues. After a month-long trial, a Baltimore City, Maryland jury returned a verdict of $1,841,000 in damages in this landmark case. Guest Bio: Brian S. Brown Brian S. If you're a regular listener, you know we are agnostic as to which exit route an owner chooses – we work to help them decide which exit route most aligns with their goals. And that can be an ESOP, sale to co-owners or management, a transfer to children or family members or a sale to a third party. And when a third party sale is the right option…we want to do all we can to prepare an owner for the eventual transaction – including helping them understand the potential pitfalls that can result in a failed deal.DISCLAIMER: The information in this presentation is provided as education only, with the understanding that neither the presenter nor ENNIS Legacy Partners or GRF CPAs & Advisors is engaged to render legal, accounting, or other professional services. A key driver of business value and a successful exit is what we would call a “next level management team". A management team that can take the business to the next few levels of growth. You've heard many times on this podcast that the less central an owner is to the business the more valuable and attractive their business will be to potential buyers. And if an owner is to be less central they need to develop a strong management team.DISCLAIMER: The information in this presentation is provided as education only, with the understanding that neither the presenter nor ENNIS Legacy Partners or GRF CPAs & Advisors is engaged to render legal, accounting, or other professional services.
