Today, on Notable Leaders' Radio, I speak with Kevin Eikenberry, Chief Potential Officer of the Kevin Eikenberry Group and author. Kevin shares his journey from growing up on a family farm to becoming a successful leader and business owner. In today's episode, we discuss: Embrace the journey! Kevin Eikenberry shares how flexibility in leadership involves embracing the 'both/and' approach, allowing for flexible leadership. Let's navigate life's complexities with an open mind and a flexible heart. Context is everything! Consider the backstory; it could change your entire perspective. Kevin Eikenberry reminds us that understanding context makes us smarter and more effective leaders. Pause and reflect; you might discover a different truth. Life and leadership exist in the "gray area," not just in black and white. Kevin talks about the importance of embracing “both” rather than either/or, highlighting the complexity of life and leadership. This concept encourages flexibility and adaptability, which is crucial for effective decision-making and problem-solving. Focus on others can lead to greater success.. Kevin emphasizes the importance of shifting focus from oneself to others for personal and professional growth. This reinforces the value of empathy and collaboration in achieving success. Influences of the Past: Kevin shares a heartfelt reflection on how his father influenced his views on leadership and business. Growing up on a family farm, he gained firsthand experience in diverse leadership roles and decision-making from a young age. Kevin Eikenberry is the Chief Potential Officer of The Kevin Eikenberry Group. With over 30 years of experience, Kevin has dedicated his career to helping organizations and leaders from over 50 countries become more effective. As a testament to his expertise, Kevin has been recognized by Global Gurus as one of the most influential thinkers on leadership for the last two years. He is also a bestselling author, with books such as Remarkable Leadership, From Bud to Boss, The Long-Distance Leader, The Long-Distance Teammate, and his newest release, The Long-Distance Team. Throughout his career, Kevin has worked with a diverse range of organizations, from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies, and has developed a reputation as a trusted advisor, coach, and consultant. He is known for his practical, actionable insights, and his ability to help leaders create positive change in their organizations.According to Kevin, fostering a team and team culture is challenging, especially in a remote working environment. Organizational culture exists regardless of the physical location of team members, and Kevin believes there are three cultures to consider: pre-pandemic, current, and aspirational. While all three matter, the aspirational culture that the team desires for the future is the most important as it provides an opportunity to shape the team's culture intentionally. To create an aspirational culture, Kevin suggests bringing the team together collaboratively, using processes to identify what they want the culture to be like. This approach works best for teams of around 15 people, but larger teams can also participate. Leaders must engage everyone in the culture's creation to ensure commitment to it. He also notes that there is a macro culture in every organization, but each team has its microculture. The more ownership the team has of the aspirational culture, the more committed they will be to achieving it.Collaborative work can be done both synchronously and asynchronously. Tools such as Zoom and Slack can be used for synchronous collaboration, while asynchronous collaboration can be done by raising questions and discussing them in a way that allows people in different time zones to participate. While synchronous collaboration may be necessary for some parts of the conversation, physical location is not a barrier to successful collaboration.Creating an aspirational culture can lead to improved retention, productivity, collaboration, and quality of relationships. It can also make it easier to attract new talent, increase employee engagement, and lead to a higher commitment from team members. When Kevin has helped other companies implement aspirational cultures, he has seen amazing results. His insights and practical recommendations make him a trusted advisor to organizations of all sizes, helping them create positive change and achieve success. Greater levels of employee engagement can be achieved when leaders engage their team members in important decisions because it creates a sense of ownership and commitment to the organization's goals and values. When employees feel that they have a say in the direction of the company and that their opinions are valued, they are more likely to feel invested in their work and stay with the organization. Involving their team members in the process of defining the team's culture that the team desires for the future is the most important because it provides an opportunity to shape the team's culture intentionally. Leaders can facilitate collaborative discussions and use processes to identify what the team wants the culture to be like. Leaders can also engage their team members by showing them how their work makes a difference as well as understanding the impact of their work by providing regular feedback, setting clear goals and expectations, and recognizing and rewarding their contributions. When employees understand how their work...

We are taking a deep dive into leading remote and hybrid teams with Kevin Eikenberry, Chief Potential Officer of The Kevin Eikenberry Group. He has spent 30 years helping organizations and leaders from over 50 countries become more effective. He has written numerous books including Remarkable Leadership, From Bud to Boss, the Long-Distance Leader, The Long-Distance Teammate, and his newest, The Long-Distance Team. So, it's not surprising that we focused on the leadership skills required to effectively lead remote teams. We honed in on the fact that despite what many so-called experts are saying, we don't need a whole new raft of leadership skills to lead remote teams. We also touched on some frequently used but unhelpful language....Virtual Teams. You may be leading a team that isn't physically located, and unless it's made up solely of robots and AI apps, it's still a team of human beings! One of the biggest challenges facing leaders and their organizations today is how to adapt the way they work to a growing demand for more flexible work arrangements by employees. But how do leaders make this shift from leading a team of individuals working under one roof, to working either full time or part of the time remotely? That's the challenge I'll be discussing with my guest, Kevin Eikenberry, in this episode of my “Leadership Biz Cafe” podcast. Kevin is the Chief Potential Officer of The Kevin Eikenberry Group, a leadership and learning consulting company. He is the bestselling author of “Remarkable Leadership: Unleashing Your Leadership Potential One Skill at a Time” and the co-author of “From Bud to Boss: Secrets to a Successful Transition to Remarkable Leadership”. His latest book is “The Long-Distance Teammate: Stay Engaged and Connected While Working Anywhere”, which is what I invited Kevin to join me to speak about in this episode. Over the course of this episode, some of the points Kevin and I discuss are: The 3 factors that are critical to remote work success. The mindset changes needed to become a successful hybrid or remote team member.4 questions that will make it easier to determine what you need to prioritize when working remotely. What leaders need to focus on to ensure they're communicating effectively. How to be better and giving and receiving feedback in remote settings. Marisa Eikenberry is the co-host of Long Distance Work Life.Marisa is the web developer at the Kevin Eikenberry group, and she has been editing their podcasts Remarkable Leadership since 2016 and Talk Like a Leader since 2019.Marisa goes into detail of how these shows are recorded, her process with the hosts and the differences working between shows, talking about how much editing she does for both shows, what she looks out for when she's listening back, etc So this will be of interest to those of you who are starting to podcast and wander what is involved in working with an editor, and get some ideas of what to look out for when working on a show. (And I realised how much I enjoy talking about editing.) As well as those business shows, Marisa is also part of the editing team that turns Twitch streams into podcasts for GodSquad Church.10.52 minsThe podcast Long Distance Work Life started as a way of promoting the group's new book - well, actually, Marissa had been waiting for a while to get her co-host Wayne to do a podcast. Once they decided to start the show, they thought of ways in which to differentiate themselves from other shows covering similar topics. The amateur-expert dynamic or teacher-student is a fun one to listen to, and Pilar has experience of that in My Pocket Psych, where she plays the “voice of the public” to occupational psychologist Dr Richard MacKinnon. (Pilar also mentions The Story Grid, as an example of this.)Marissa is having a lot of fun with this, asking questions that she knows other people have, but also those that she's unsure of (for example, what's the difference between remote-first and remote-friendly)16.35 minsOur guest is really enjoying working with Wayne Turmel, his co-host. On top of that, she now feels a complete part of the podcast community, something she's never felt even though she's been editing podcasts for a long time. She used to say she was “just an editor”, which now she realises was not being fair to herself. This raises questions like who makes the podcasting community, etc. Recording for this show has changed her mindset. For example, she's more regularly on LinkedIn, mindfully asking questions about podcasting and networking with other podcasters. She now feels like she can be part of those conversations.22.00 mins Marisa has been listening to podcasts since 2014 (she mentions the comedy podcast My brother, my brother and me) including ones on podcasting, like Podcasting Business School. Pilar mentions The Audacity to Podcast, Podcasters' Roundtable, Buzzsprout's Buzzcast (here's my affiliate link to Buzzsprout hosting) and Libsyn's The Feed. 27.05 minsMarisa mainly listens to podcasts with more than one host, or a host n conversation. Something she's struggling with at the moment is taking up enough space in the conversation and also delivering the intros and outros, which would be easier if they weren't also releasing the video version. (Pilar forgets her calls to action to…)Past guest Myriam Hadnes talked about how she's also learned to take the space with her guests,If you're thinking of starting your own podcasting adventure, I recommend Buzzsprout as host - click here for my affiliate link, which also gets you a little discount, and Riverside FM for recording, which you can access through this other affiliate link.
What does it mean to "go to work" if you don't actually leave the house? How can you keep your remote workers engaged and keeping their eye on the long-term career goal? Kevin is the Chief Potential Officer The Kevin Eikenberry Group and Co-founder of the Remote Leadership Institute. Wayne is host of the groundbreaking podcast, The Cranky Middle Manager Show, which was one of the first leadership podcasts to be included in the list of 50 Top Influential HR Blogs by BNET. His clients include the American Red Cross, Schneider Electric, Dell, and several departments of the United States and Canadian governments. For 20 years, Wayne worked as a stand-up comedian touring throughout North America, headlining clubs and concerts. He appeared on the TV show “Evening at the Improv” and opened for bands such as Chicago and Hall and Oates. They are both bestselling co-authors of The Long-Distance Leader: Rules for Remarkable Remote Leadership, From Bud to Boss: Secrets to a Successful Transition to Remarkable Leadership, and the new book The Long-Distance Teammate: Stay Engaged and Connected While Working Anywhere. Now, you might already know that I grew up on a farm, and so I have plenty of farm phrases in my vernacular. Some of these phrases wouldn't make any sense to you. But some of those farm phrases are things you've either heard before or maybe even heard here on this blog last week. You can watch that episode right here. So last week we talked about making hay, and today we're talking about gathering eggs, and specifically about not putting all your eggs in one basket. Now, I don't have nearly as much personal experience with eggs as I do with making hay. But think about it for a second. If you've got a basket that you're using to collect eggs and as you're putting them in one cracks. Well then, you have a problem. Even worse, if you drop the bucket, you lose all the eggs. So what's the point for us as leaders? Well, there are several things for us to think about here. And I'm starting the video with one of my favorite thoughts in business: One is a dangerous number. Tweet it out: One can be a dangerous number. Look for multiple options, multiple solutions, and multiple paths to your success. @KevinEikenberry In this episode: Learn more about, listen and subscribe to the Remarkable Leadership podcast here. I grew up on a farm, and so I have plenty of agricultural phrases in my vernacular, but actually all of us have some of those phrases. For example: Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Yep, that's a farm phrase. And hint, I'm going to talk about it next week. But for now we're talking about this phrase: Make hay when the sun is shining. Now, you may have never made hay. You may not know what that means but you've probably heard the phrase. Here's the backstory. Hay is made from growing crop (grass, alfalfa and clover most frequently), and it is cut when it's very green and very moist, a growing plant. However it must be dry before it can be bailed up to be used and stored. So you can cut hay when it's raining, but you can't make hay and bale it when it's raining. The sun's got to be shining. The crops need to be dry. There's a limited time window. Make hay when the sun is shining. So here's the point for us as leaders. Tweet it out: To make hay when the sun shines means to do the work you need to do, when you need to do it. And you don't have to be a farmer to understand that. @KevinEikenberry In this episode: Learn more about, listen and subscribe to the Remarkable Leadership podcast here. Organizational culture has been an important topic for a number of years, but right now, as I'm recording this video at the beginning of 2022, culture has never been a bigger focus. Organizations around the globe are trying to figure out what the future of their workplace will look like. And rightfully so, they're concerned about their culture. And many leaders are trying to figure out how they can get the culture they used to have back. Now let me just say, trying to get back to the culture you used to have pre-pandemic will not be possible. The world has changed significantly as have we and our people. Whether we like it or not, culture is always changing. It's never static. So as you think about your organizational culture and what that will look like for you, I'd like to share three cultures that you should consider in this process. Tweet it out: To create the culture you want, you must consider the culture of your past and present as the starting point. @KevinEikenberry In this episode: Learn more about, listen and subscribe to the Remarkable Leadership podcast here.

Is more better? Maybe, if we are talking about ice cream. What about if we are talking about collaboration? Rob Cross would argue that we can become overwhelmed by all the connecting and collaborating. Pre-pandemic we spent 85% of our time in collaborative activities, like e-mail, phone calls, meetings… That is higher today. Rob is the author of Beyond Collaboration Overload: How to Work Smarter, Get Ahead, and Restore Your Well-Being. The book is a culmination of research on mapping the patterns of connectivity and collaboration among high performers. It's not that they didn't collaborate; however, they chose how they used their time and strategically connected. Rob shares why we tend to overextend ourselves and what we can do with the time we get back. Our well-being is tied to our healthy relationships and reducing the micro-stressors. On the day that we release this video, it's just about the middle of the year. But whether you're watching this video in June or you're watching it in November, it is a very valuable practice to do a process check. In this episode, I'll share actionable tips for how to effectively do a process check in your life. Tweet it out: Sometimes it is hard to gauge progress when we are doing the work. We recognize that growth requires moving away from the status quo. Yet, how do you know what to change? Melanie Parish suggests it's OK to experiment and collect data to decide what to do next. Melanie is the author of The Experimental Leader: Be a New Kind of Boss to Cultivate an Organization of Innovators. She joins Kevin to discuss this mindset shift to be experimental in problem-solving. When we can test assumptions and analyze the results, we can decide how to handle challenges and opportunities within our organizations and teams. We should expect failures; it is the small failures that provide good data. The big failures may be a result of doing too much, too soon. In this episode, Melanie discusses: A scientist's approach to leadership. Best practices and experimentation. Failure and experimentation. Jonathan is the author of Good Authority: How to Become the Leader Your Team Is Waiting For and joins Kevin to discuss the mindset shift leaders at all levels need to make. Your team does not need a leader who knows everything and solves all the problems. Your job as a leader is to think strategically about the organization. How do new ideas come about? Cyril Bouquet is the co-author of ALIEN THINKING: The Unconventional Path to Breakthrough Ideas. Although new, innovative ideas seem to appear magically, they take time to emerge, mature and become successful. Cyril and his co-authors studied professions of people who challenge existing paradigms (inventors, artists, scientists). They found these folks use five patterns of thinking that distinguish them from the rest of us. These patterns -Attention, Levitation, Imagination, Experimentation, and Navigation- can help innovative thinking and problem-solving. He also says the navigation piece can be the most difficult because this is where the “rubber meets the road” and often where we face the most resistance. Often, we see grit as something hard-nosed. However, Darrin Gray believes our grit should be fueled by joy. Darrin serves as Chief Marketing Officer at Athletes in Action and leads AIA's NFL Advisory Council. He started in the newspaper business, where he felt he was creating a community. He has carried this idea of community and building a team throughout his career. A winning team isn't about themselves but is a coalition of the willing. These are individuals who not only want to become better (players, leaders, parents) but are willing to help each other build the best version of themselves. Leaders not only need self-awareness, but a mindset and heartset to meet people where they are.
