Jonathan Evans is an NFL chaplain who leads with the invaluable experience of having been in the shoes of the players he serves. During his stint in the NFL, Jonathan played as a fullback. Now, he's chaplain for the Dallas Cowboys and co-chaplain of the Dallas Mavericks, a writer, a speaker, a husband, and a father.Jonathan's experience extends beyond football: he's also able to identify with those he ministers to due to his own deeply personal experiences of loss. Going through the grief uniquely equipped him to write his new book Fighting Your Battles, which is available now.In this episode of Trevor Talks, Jonathan shares endless pearls of wisdom that you won't want to miss. “Everybody is either in a battle, on their way to a battle or they just got out of one" -Jonathan EvansToday I sat down with Jonathan Evans and we talked about his new book, Fighting Your Battles: Every Chrisitan Playbook for Victory. Jonathan is a husband, father of five beautiful children, brother to Priscilla Shirer, Chrystal Evans Hurst and Anthony Evans and the son of Dr. Tony Evans. Jonathan is a former NFL player and he is now the chaplain of the Dallas Cowboys football team. Jonathan shares some of his personal battles on today's show and how he and his wife have preserved through them all. I know can we all agree with Jonathan that everyone is either in a battle, coming out of a battle or going through a battle so we need to know how to fight our battles so that we can be victorious. His new book Fighting Your Battles teaches us that the storm does not always stop when you take the faith step. We see this in Peter's story, he was walking on a storm when Jesus called him forward. As you trust God, Jonathan reminds us that it may still be stormy, but as you remain consistent in God's Word,  prayer, and worship, your yoke will be easier and you will experience less burden. You will be ready to fight your spiritual battles and know that you can be victorious after listening to today's episode. Connect with JamieFacebook //  Instagram // YouTubeGET ALL THE LINKS FROM THE SHOW HERE

Pod45 has been on a short hiatus over the summer but we are delighted to be back and delighted to have you back with us. Today our discussion takes us to a cluster we published earlier in the summer, at the very end of June, on the writer and translator Lydia Davis. That cluster is edited by Julie Tanner and features, alongside a wonderful range of responses to Davis's work, previously unseen journal excerpts from Davis herself, which we were honoured to be given by Davis to publish. As Julie suggests in her introduction to the cluster, there is a seeming discrepancy between what we might call Davis's cult popularity and what remains a relative lack of scholarly attention paid to her. As Julie puts it, “Davis is strikingly singular, but it is perhaps the plurality of genres and modalities that repels categories, movements, and, often, syllabi.” Yet, to quote Julie again, “though a writers' writer to some, Davis is a readers' writer for us all.” That, I think, is what the discussion you're about to hear emphasizes most. For this discussion, Contemporaries co-editor Francisco Robles sat down with cluster editor Julie Tanner, alongside cluster contributors Jonathan Evans, Alice Blackhurst, and Lola Boorman. You can find the Lydia Davis cluster at post45.org/contemporaries now, and you can follow Contemporaries on Twitter at @AtPost45. This week on Real Talk with Rachael, I'm talking with Anthony Evans about his book When Faith Meets Therapy. For two decades, Anthony has voiced the gospel with a melodic, thought-provoking style, and has emerged as one of Christian music's premier worship leaders and singers. Along the way, Anthony has released ten solo projects (the last two climbing all the way to #1 on Billboard's Top Gospel Album charts), released his first two books (Unexpected Places and Divine Disruption), produced numerous music videos, acted in four movies, and even performed as “Beast” in Disney's Hollywood Bowl production of Beauty and the Beast. In addition, he has created inspirational events in collaboration with his father, beloved pastor and international speaker, Dr. Tony Evans; his sisters, Priscilla Shirer and Chrystal Evans Hurst; and his brother, author and speaker Jonathan Evans. In more recent years, Anthony has been working and producing in Los Angeles, where he appeared on NBC's The Voice. His time on the show led to him being discovered and asked to perform and produce vocals for various major artists and networks. In addition to vocal production, Anthony has been enlisted as a talent producer for an assortment of popular reality and competition shows. This sojourn in LA has led him to think more progressively about his music and ministry—he desires to communicate in terms that connect with people spiritually, no matter where they are in their journey with the Lord, without compromising his own faith and message. This focus has allowed Anthony to use his one-of-a-kind voice to reverberate through the church and out its doors to impact the world beyond. Key Points from Our Conversation: Sometimes our faith can keep us from addressing the root of our problems. We feel shame that praying and reading the Bible aren't changing us, but we need practical tools to process our thoughts and emotions. The church is often not seen as a safe place for people struggling with their mental health because of a lack of empathy and authenticity, which creates shame. We can create a safe space when we find empathy by understanding their story.  When people show you who they are, believe them. Don't be a victim of your own compassion.  When we experience pain and grief, it's natural to want to numb those feelings, but you must feel to heal. Feelings aren't good or bad, they're indicators. Therapy is a safe place to experience your feelings without judging them. Feelings are valid but temporary. We can trust in God's truth. "When you start walking in the truth in spite of how you feel, your feelings will follow your feet." Be as kind to yourself as you would be to someone else who is struggling. Give yourself grace. It's about progress, not perfection. Making mistakes is a sign you're trying. Do what you can and God will do what you can't. Let's Get Real Practical: Tips for finding a therapist - Pray for the right therapist Look at fees and consider your budget. Many therapists have interns with reduced rates that are supervised by licensed therapists. Some offer payment on a sliding scale. Make sure they're licensed (or under someone licensed) in your state. Read the bio on their site and see if what matters to them matters to you. (If you're looking for a Christian counsel, check AACC.net) Tips for getting the most out of therapy - Ask questions that matter to you. Be vocal about techniques that work and ones that don't.  Ask for book and podcast recommendations. Keep a journal and include thoughts, feelings, dreams, and anything you'd like to process in your session. Set recurring appointments. Therapy is not just for people going through a crisis, it's a lifestyle. Connect with Anthony: website | Instagram | Facebook Connect with Rachael: website | Instagram | Facebook

There's an African proverb that pairs well with John 14:6 where Jesus proclaims Himself "the way, the truth, and the life." It goes like this: "We make the road by walking." What comes to the fore in both of these statements is the thought that life is not necessarily stretching out in front of us well-paved and easily discernible, but that life is an active endeavor requiring learning, maturing, and adapting. Jesus emphasizes His nearness to us in the process, but the implication is to step forward confidently even while the unknown confronts us with every step we take. We don't have to know where we'll be exactly twenty years down the road, but only where we are now and what we'll do next. This week, we talk to two people who have learned to navigate their callings in the now and the next. Jeff Henderson is a pastor and businessman who talks about the thumbprints of God that mark our lives, giving us clues to living out our purpose. Jonathan Evans is the son of Dr. Tony and Lois Evans. With numerous efforts to become an NFL player thwarted, Jonathan reshifted his expectations and began to see how God was getting him to his dream—just not exactly in the way he thought. So God's thumbprints on you, the way He's created you, God's thumbprints on you are clues about His plans for you. And so I think the purpose of our lives is a lot closer than we might think.” - Jeff Henderson “You don't know what door God will open up if you're faithful in the small things. So be faithful in the small things. Be faithful where you are, because God's paying attention.” - Jeff Henderson "I think it breaks God's heart that so many of His sons and daughters go to work and they're mistreated. Everyone deserves to be led well because they are a son or daughter of God." - Jeff Henderson “If I'm in a difficult situation, I'm trying to change that prayer to, ‘God, I want to get out of this. But if you choose to leave me here, help me to learn the lesson that you're trying to get me to learn right now. What is the lesson in this season of suffering that you're trying to teach me that a season of comfort would not?'" - Jeff Henderson  “I'm excited to be selected to be on the team and be out running plays that He's calling.“ - Jonathan Evans “I got called back by the Cowboys to be the chaplain. It wasn't until I was obedient that I got the call to come back to the NFL.” - Jonathan Evans “I've been cut, I've been traded, I've been hurt. I've been not wanted. I've been rejected. I've experienced all those things, which makes me even better as God's player, as the chaplain for the Cowboys.” - Jonathan Evans  “Jesus got everything done in thirty-three years, and He didn't run anywhere. He walked.” - Jonathan Evans “I believe everyone has a calling on their life. And a lot of times we're looking at the barriers, looking at the problem, looking at the loss, looking at the grief, looking at the pain as the reasons why we're not called to go forward instead of the catalyst that shoots us off into the calling that God has for us.” - Jonathan Evans “I think that people must realize that your faith, your calling, your purpose, your destiny is unique to you, and it's on you to connect with God so that you can find you.” - Jonathan Evans “Whenever you're looking at your own insufficiencies to determine whether you can go do what God keeps begging you to do, then you know that you're saying, “You know what? I'd rather be comfortable than be called.” And that's how you know.” - Jonathan Evans ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! For Father's Day, Stephanie welcomes NLF chaplain and Pastor Jonathan Evans for a no-nonsense conversation about our investment as parents for the Kingdom of God. With his trademark candid and bold kindness, Jonathan shares his approach to parenting, as well as what he learned from his parents, Lois and Dr Tony Evans. We discuss fatherhood in particular, but these principles apply to all forms of parenting and for everyone who ministers to children of all ages! So, parents, grandparents, family members and all youth leaders -- this episode will inspire you, challenge you, and help you remember how eternal your investment is! Jonathan shares, “God is calling you to go further, rise higher, and achieve more in His name than you could ever imagine. But you will never get to experience all that God has for you unless you are willing to rise up out of the depths of your own disappointments, get up off the couches of your own comfort zones, and pursue His plan for this season. Now.” Beyond parenting, Jonathan shades his quest for a deeper intimacy with God. He remembers living life on “cruise control,” comfortable where he was, following in the footsteps of his well-known and respected father (Dr. Tony Evans), until one day he realized he didn't know his own role or purpose in life. Jonathan didn't wait to figure it out; he took action and pursued what God had in store for him. His book, Your Time is Now urges us to get out of the “comfort” rut and do the same. Using the Old Testament leader Joshua as a model for stepping up to God's calling, Jonathan invites us to stop living at surface level, dig deeper, and step into our callings now, no matter what obstacles stand in our way. “Now is the time for you to live out your purpose for God,” says Jonathan. “Not when you're older. Not when you've settled down. Not when you feel like you've got nothing else to do…Now is your season.” In Your Time is Now, Jonathan invites us to shift our perspectives from an outward concern about what the world thinks, to an inward focus on the only One whose opinion really matters: God. No matter the season we find ourselves in or the challenges we face, Jonathan encourages us to stand on the truth that God can and will use us and this season for His purpose, if only we intentionally and actively pursue Him. If you missed our Mother's Day episode, we invite you to check out the phenomenally inspiring convo between Molly De Frank and Stephanie about how to digitally detox your kids! It's scary to leave your comfort zone. But Jonathan Evans has found that God doesn't call the qualified—He qualifies the called. The son of Lois and Dr. Tony Evans, Jonathan reminds us of the story of Joshua: that our lives are so much greater when we don't rely on ourselves for understanding and instead trust a God who has greater plans for us than we could ever imagine.   Quotes “God doesn't need you to feel up for it. He just needs your feet to start treading in obedience. And when we're able to be obedient and not allow our feelings to be our God, but to allow God to be our God in spite of our feelings, then we're able to experience through our function of obedience all that God has for us.” —Jonathan Evans  “I don't know exactly what I want to do. I don't know exactly how it's going to happen, but I do know that I'm going to have faith. I do know that every single day I'm going to get up and put one foot in front of the other, and I'm going to pray about my day, get clarity about my day, and execute my day that I've been given today.” —Jonathan Evans  “Let me tell you something about how God works. God goes to the back of the line to pull people from the back to the front. God is not looking for someone who's qualified. He's going to qualify the someone he's looking for. And so when people understand that God qualifies the called, that God is not calling the qualified, then you understand who you're really dealing with.” —Jonathan Evans    Jonathan's LinksJonathan's website Jonathan's Facebook Jonathan's Twitter Jonathan's Instagram   Resources Mentioned in This EpisodeDr. Tony Evans   Connect with Sally Lloyd-JonesJesus Storybook Bible Facebook Jesus Storybook Bible Instagram  Sally's website Sally's Facebook Sally's Instagram   *Episode produced by Four Eyes Media*

He asks us to consider these questions: * When have you been somewhere—maybe in a class or at an event—and you couldn't wait to leave? How did you get through it? * Why is it better to wait on God instead of going our own way? * How can waiting be the best way for us to move forward in life? * In what ways does waiting help us rejoice in the plan God has for our life?
