#1,421: Learning to Trust God in Prayer

The 5 Minute Discipleship Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 27, 2026 5:30

Prayer is an adventure in trust. We put our needs into the hands of an almighty God, who has the power to meet our needs according to His will. What will God do? We don't know, but we do know that what God does is right. His answer and His actions may not make sense to our finite minds and limited understanding, but the will and purpose of God are always correct.Main Points:1. When we have a need, it's normal to be anxious, to worry, and to wonder what will happen. This is our human response to uncertainty. Yet, when we pray we choose to trust. When we pray we choose to believe God. 2. What an adventure it is to wait on God and see what He will do. The waiting is not always pleasant, but the longer we serve Jesus, the more confidence we have in the waiting. We know God is up to something. We don't see it yet, but we are confident testimony of His faithfulness is coming soon.3. Faith in God is a choice. It's a decision to believe and to trust that He is working all things for your good, according to His purpose.Today's Scripture Verses:2 Corinthians 4:18 - “So we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” Hebrews 11:1 - “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”Mark 9:21-24 - “Jesus asked the boy's father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” “‘If you can'?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.” Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”Proverbs 3:5 - “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” Quick Links:Donate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group

Show NotesSummaryIn this episode, Ms. G delves into the pervasive issue of worry, a common experience that many people face but often hesitate to discuss. She emphasizes that while it's natural to worry, it ultimately serves no productive purpose and can detract from our peace and trust in God. Drawing from biblical references, she highlights the distinction between worry and wisdom, urging listeners to recognize that worrying does not solve problems but rather keeps us stuck in anxiety about the future. Ms. G encourages a shift from worry to trust, emphasizing that trusting God is an active choice that requires daily commitment and prayer.Ms. G further explores the idea that worry can signal a lack of faith or an attempt to control outcomes that are beyond our grasp. She invites listeners to reflect on what they are worrying about and to surrender those burdens to God. By replacing worry with prayer and gratitude, individuals can find peace and clarity. The episode concludes with a powerful reminder that while challenges are inevitable, God promises to be with us through them, and trusting Him is the key to experiencing true peace.TakeawaysWorry is a waste; it doesn't solve problems.Trusting God is an active choice, not passive.Worry keeps us stuck in the future, missing today's grace.Replace worry with prayer and gratitude. What are you worrying about that God is asking you to surrender?Worry vs. Wisdom: Choosing Trust Over AnxietySurrendering Worry: Finding Peace in Trusting God"Worrying has never solved a single problem.""Exchange worry for prayer, anxiety for Thanksgiving.""Worry is a burden we were never designed to carry."Keywords: worry, trust, faith, wisdom, prayer, anxiety, God, peace, Christian living, surrenderSound Bites Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Worry01:57 Worry vs. Wisdom05:47 The Impact of Worry on Trust06:46 Choosing Trust Over Panic09:38 Surrendering Worry to God

JAN. 12, 2026"Keep calm and carry on"."The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." Ex 14:14 NIVDuring World War II, the British Department of Information designed three "home publicity" posters. The first said, "Your courage, your cheerfulness, your resolution will bring us victory." The second said, "Freedom is in peril." The third and most famous said, "Keep calm and carry on." The department printed 2.45 million of the third posters, but they were never publicly displayed.  That motto had all but vanished from Britain's consciousness when a bookstore-owning couple in Alnwick—Stuart and Mary Manley-discovered an original copy of the poster at the bottom of a box of old books. With Pharaoh's chariots bearing down on Moses from behind, and the Red Sea in front of him, he was "between a rock and a hard place." That's when God gave Moses these instructions: "The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still" (Ex 14:13-14 NIV). That sounds an awful lot like keep calm and carry on, doesn't it? What would be the hardest thing to do if Egyptian chariots were charging straight at you at full speed? To be still! When we find ourselves in this sort of situation, we want to do something-anything. We have a nervous energy that tries to solve problems as quickly as possible. But these are the tests that reveal trust. Sometimes God leads us to a place where we have nowhere to turn but to Him. Is that where you are today? Then trust God's power, love, and faithfulness, and He will bring you safely through it."Keep calm and carry on" Trust God's power, love, and faithfulness.Share This DevotionalSend us a textSupport the showChanging Lives | Building Strong Family | Impacting Our Community For Jesus Christ!

Spiritually anchored, yet internally unsettled. And when fear surfaces, it doesn't feel like rebellion; it feels like your system is overwhelmed. In this episode, I'm getting real about the "C-word"—comparison—and how it acts as a thief of your joy and a blocker to the miracles God is orchestrating in your current season. I'm sharing my own journey of turning 36 and how I've learned to embrace the "darkroom" where God develops our best work before it ever hits the spotlight. I want to help you shift your perspective from what you lack to what is already in your hand. We'll talk about why your "5 loaves and 2 fish" are more than enough to create momentum right now, even if you don't have a massive team or a huge budget. Whether you are in a "wilderness" season like Moses or just feeling stuck in a cycle of inaction, this episode is your reminder that God is an on-time God who cares just as much about your internal transformation as He does about your destination. Yesterday we were in Proverbs chapter 2. Today, we turn the page to chapter 3. My child, never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart. If you do this, you will live many years, and your life will be satisfying. Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will earn a good reputation. Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. (v. 1-6 NLT)Finding favor with both God and people, as verse 4 states, would be a sign of a fulfilled and balanced life, would it not? Again, God promises He can do these things in our lives when we surrender and submit to Him and His ways. How might personal expressions like loyalty, kindness, faithfulness, and trust help you find better balance with everyone in your life? For these to become genuine in life, we must slow down and focus on others. Exactly the way we win favor and a good reputation. With this in mind listen again to the passage, this time from The MessageGood friend, don't forget all I've taught you; take to heart my commands. They'll help you live a long, long time, a long life lived full and well. Don't lose your grip on Love and Loyalty. Tie them around your neck; carve their initials on your heart. Earn a reputation for living well in God's eyes and the eyes of the people. Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don't try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he's the one who will keep you on track.Did you notice twice in that version of the passage, the words “living well” were used? What we all desire. What we all seek. To live well.Let's pray together: “Heavenly Father, teach me to take the time to listen for You, teach me to hear when You speak, teach me to know the difference in my voice and Yours, others' voices and Yours. I want to learn Your voice just as clearly as my closest friend's. As above, so below.”

In this episode, I'm breaking down what it actually means to set your mind on the Spirit in Romans 8. Because I think a lot of believers feel this tension. We want to be spiritually minded, but we also have real responsibilities. Work, family, bills, decisions, pressure. And sometimes it can feel like choosing the Spirit means neglecting real life. I'm going to talk about why that's not what Scripture is saying. Being spiritually minded isn't escapism. It's learning to live from obedience and trust in God while still showing up faithfully in what He's already put in your hands. We're going to look at what's actually governing your decisions, how to balance faith with practical responsibility, and why living from the Spirit produces peace and purpose.   Chapters 00:00 Understanding Romans 8: Setting Our Mind on the Spirit 10:54 Living in the Spirit: Balancing Responsibilities and Faith

“Trust God, Clean House, Serve Others”  The Assist the Officer Foundation sits down with an incredibly accomplished and unique individual today in Sgt. Andre Taylor of Dallas SWAT. As Dre grew up in the South side of Chicago, he regularly witnessed acts of violence but also witnessed an incredible community and family as his mother was ever present in his upbringing ensuring he didn't fall prey to the many negative lifestyles of the streets that could lead to him in jail or dead. Life laid itself out for Andre as he found himself moving to Dallas Texas to join the Police force in 1999 and began serving the City of Dallas. He joined the Dallas SWAT team in 2003 and trained under some of the toughest SWAT trainers who exposed him to a new level of police work . Andre experienced several critical incidents during his time in SWAT and one that sticks out more than others is an incident that's familiar to this show. The hostage rescue on Martel still haunts everyone that was a part of that operation. After leaving SWAT he joined the Dallas Mounted Unit and learned the tools to have a partner, Tommy, that weighed over 1500 lbs. and quickly understood the power and beauty of horses and saw the importance of community policing. Andre Taylor returned to Dallas SWAT years later and found himself in a new role as the leader and not the operator, so he had to learn to develop tools for his new role as being a boss to high performing and highly trained operators. Dre has always been in control of his life and his own destiny however in January of 2023 he looked into the mirror and did not like what he saw and realized he could not control an aspect of his life. As he contemplated his new direction, he typed out on email that would change his life, both personally and professionally, forever as he knew once he hit the send button everything would change. Once he hit send and the first step in climbing a new mountain was taken and now Dre found himself in a completely new world as he had to ask for help to regain control of his life. The listener will have to finish this story and hear Andre's new challenge in life and career as he found a new purpose and “why”.  We are hoping Dre finds that needed time now to work on his old cars and roller skate. In this episode, I'm sharing a conversation I had as a guest on the Salt and Light Podcast, where I sat down with the host to talk about healing, obedience, and what it really looks like to build a life and business with God. I open up about my 17-year healing journey after a career-ending injury, how God used that season to awaken the gift of healing in my life, and why obedience often requires surrendering control—even when it doesn't make sense. We also dive into my decision to shut down a seven-figure business after God showed me He wasn't in it, and what I've learned about discernment, alignment, and trusting God in seasons of rebuilding.  This conversation is honest, faith-filled, and full of encouragement for anyone navigating leadership, entrepreneurship, or a season of radical trust. __________________________________________________________ Ready for more? High performers facing burnout and decision fatigue often wonder if they can stop striving without losing impact. This season-closing episode offers a faith-rooted commissioning into alignment, peace, and leadership that was never meant to be carried alone. There is a moment at the end of every meaningful season that doesn't feel loud or triumphant. It feels settled.Grounded.Quietly resolved. In this Season Three finale of The Recalibration, we don't review lessons or offer next steps. We pause — and we send. This episode is a commissioning, especially for high-capacity humans who have carried responsibility, leadership, and pressure for a long time and are quietly asking:Can I trust that my life and calling are actually held by God?If I stop striving, will things still move forward? Is alignment participation… or withdrawal?Throughout this season, we explored burnout recovery, decision fatigue, role confusion, success without fulfillment, spiritual exhaustion, and identity drift — not as problems to fix, but as signals pointing toward deeper alignment. In this final episode, everything settles vertically. What this episode names clearly:You were never self-made — even when you worked hardStriving was never the requirement for impact or callingPressure was never the proof of faithfulnessAlignment is not disengagement, it's participation with GodPeace doesn't remove responsibility — it places God within itIf you listened through this season, shared episodes, or stayed with work that required honesty instead of hype, this episode acknowledges you.At the heart of this conversation is the differentiator that has anchored the entire season:Identity-Level Recalibration (ILR) is not another mindset tactic or productivity strategy. It is the root-level recalibration that makes every other tool effective again — by restoring alignment at the level of identity, nervous system, and spiritual grounding.Today's Micro RecalibrationBefore you move on with your day, pause and reflect on this:What am I still carrying as if it's mine alone? You don't need to solve it.You don't need to release it all at once.Just notice.Awareness is where trust begins — and where alignment deepens.Explore Identity-Level Recalibration→ Join the next Friday Recalibration Live experience → Take your listening deeper! Trust feels spiritual, but so often it's physical. When life starts to feel unpredictable, our bodies are usually the first to react through tight shoulders, racing thoughts, or a constant urge to stay one step ahead of what might happen. Struggling to trust God in an uncertain season doesn't mean your faith is weak; it often means your body remembers what it felt like when things fell apart before. I often hear my coaching clients say, “I know God is good, but I don't feel safe.” And that gap - the one between what you believe and what your body feels - is where trust often gets complicated. If you want to trust God even though everything in you wants control, this episode is for you.Rooting for you,JessicaNext steps:Get my free 3-day study and learn how to deal with your emotions in a biblical way: https://www.jessicahottle.com/3-day-study/Learn more about working with me 1:1 as your mental health coach: https://www.jessicahottle.com/mental-health-coachingOr book your free 20-minute consultation here!Check out my biblical studies: https://www.jessicahottle.com/shopGet my self-paced course, Untangle Your Thoughts program: https://www.jessicahottle.com/healEmail me at >> jessica@jessicahottle.comThe information shared in this podcast is for educational and informational purposes only and is not intended as medical or clinical advice. Hey CBJ Family, Have you ever wondered, "God, am I missing something?" Even when you pray daily...even when you're doing "all the right things"...the vision feels stuck.  You are not alone--and this episode is for you. In today's conversation, we're reframing vision through a biblical lens--not as something you chase, but as something God is forming within you. This isn't about vision boards or hype. It's about clarity, obedience, patience, and trusting God's timing when nothing seems to be moving. Rooted in Habakkuk 2:2-3, Proverbs 16:3, Psalm 127:1, and more, we unpack what it really means to wait well- without quitting, striving, or losing faith.  In this epsiode you'll learn: Why vision is about who God is shaping you to become, not just what you want How to tell if you're vision is aligned with God's will Why silence from God doesn't mean absence - it often means development What to do when you've been praying over the same vision long after excitemnt fades You'll hear this powerful truth: "If God gave you the vision quickly, He may grow you slowly so you can carry  it." We close with clear takeaways and a simple activation exercsie you can do today- not to rush the process, but to anchor yourself in peace, prayer, and trust. Press play if you're ready to: Stop second guessing Trust God's timing Stay faithful in the waiting Walk forward with peace, not panic Watch the show on YouTube or on audio, and subscribe so you never miss a week with us! In this episode of The Living It Out Podcast, Pastor David Maestas teaches from 2 Samuel 2:1–3:5, reminding us that just because God has promised something doesn't mean the battle is over. In fact, sometimes the fight intensifies after the anointing. As David steps into leadership over Judah, conflict immediately follows. The house of Saul and the house of David enter a long, exhausting struggle—one marked by opposition, loss, and slow progress. This passage shows us a hard but necessary truth: spiritual battles are often prolonged, personal, and refining. Pastor Dave unpacks what it looks like to: Trust God while progress feels slow Lead faithfully in seasons of opposition Stay obedient when the promise hasn't fully materialized Recognize that growth often happens through resistance This teaching challenges listeners to stop interpreting hardship as failure and instead see it as part of God's forming process. David didn't rush the throne, manipulate outcomes, or fight in his own strength, he waited on God while walking faithfully through conflict.

A Scripture Meditation on Psalm 27 using Lectio Divina. Do not be afraid. Easier said than done. Fear is a common emotion when we feel scared, concerned, or even ashamed. In this Psalm, David was being pursued by his very real enemies who wanted to do very real hard to him. In the face of this uncertainty, David chose courageous trust when he declared that God was greater than his enemies and therefore, he would not be afraid. David placed his confidence in the Lord. May we do the same. Listen in to this guided meditation and allow the Holy Spirit to direct you to what he has for you. The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall. 3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then I will be confident. 13 I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. When emotions feel tangled or words won’t come out right, God invites you to pour out your heart to Him as a safe refuge. Psalm 62:8 reminds us that whether we speak freely or sit silently, God listens closely and welcomes every concern we bring before Him. Highlights God invites you to pour out your heart—without fear or filtering. Whether you process internally or externally, God can handle your words or your silence. God is a refuge, not threatened by emotion or overwhelmed by honesty. When words fail, the Holy Spirit helps express what’s on your heart (Romans 8:26). God bends down to listen, drawing closer rather than pulling away. David modeled honest expression through prayer, music, and worship. God can communicate what you cannot find words to say—even to others. Do you want to listen ad-free? Full Transcript Below: Pouring Out Your Heart By Cindi McMenamin Bible Reading:Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your hearts before Him; God is a refuge for us. (Psalm 62:8 NASB) Do you ever long for a safe place to pour out your heart? Some people are internal processors. They run thoughts through their minds and at times find it difficult to verbally express what’s on their hearts. At times, I wish I were that way. To the contrary, I struggle with keeping it all inside. As a verbal or external processor, I repeat instructions aloud to make sure I understand them. And I express my thoughts verbally as a way of sorting through them. To my husband, who is an internal processor, that’s exhausting at times. For me, it’s essential. To hold it in is to put a stopper on my heart, and I feel I will suffocate. Until pent-up feelings eventually blow, like an eruption of emotion that can be overwhelming to those I love the most. In the aftermath of a gush of words, there can sometimes be regret. But God is not threatened by my words—or yours. And He’s not irritated by our silence, either. He tells us, in His Word, to pour out our hearts before Him, and then He tells us He is a refuge, a safe place—we don’t need to fear what we said or the words we withheld. He knows, and can handle them all—or none at all. And if you’re one who struggles with how to verbally express how you feel, or when you do, you choose the wrong words, Romans 8:26 tells us His Spirit will communicate with yours and express your very heart to your Heavenly Father. I love how the Contemporary English Version renders Psalm 62:8: “Trust God, my friends, and always tell him each of your concerns. God is our place of safety.” Intersecting Faith & Life: Could you use a safe place when it comes to bearing your soul? Do you need a refuge, a place to hide, when you’re not ready to express how you feel? God is there for us whenever we need to process our thoughts and feelings. He is the Ultimate Listener and the Perfect Communicator. He is the Quiet Encourager and our Comforting Presence. Psalm 116:2 in the New Living Translation says: “Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!” I love how that verse indicates He will come near us, rather than walk away, when we have something we need to say. He will draw closer—in order to listen carefully—when He knows we struggle with how to express what’s on our hearts, or how to filter our words. As a father with an ear bent toward his loving child, our God will listen. So, pour it out. Or keep it in, and just close your eyes and reflect on being in His presence. He knows exactly what you need to say. He can hear your unspoken words, too. I tend to think David, the psalmist, needed to write music and lyrics in order to express his heart. And I believe he counted on God to help him find words for what he felt, so he could express those words to God and sing them back to Him. In doing so, he experienced God’s strength in the midst of his weakness. What do you need to express to someone today, while you struggle to find the right words? Can you tell it to God instead, or ask Him to search your mind and thoughts and help you convey what you need to say to someone else? Many times, when I’m at a loss for how to say something to someone at just the right time and in just the right way, I’ve asked my heavenly Father to convey to that person what’s on my heart without me having to say anything. He has an amazing way of touching someone’s heart and making them “hear” what I really wanted to say to them, but never found the words to do so. Oh, the overwhelming, astounding love of God. All His ways are perfect, says Psalm 18:30. And through His help, we are strengthened. The next time you need to speak up or hold it in, praise Him for being a God who listens. And then pour out your heart before Him. Your words are safe with Him. Further Reading:Psalm 139:1-18.
