We live in a world that constantly tells us to measure ourselves against someone else—whether it's their success, their appearance, their influence, or even their faith journey. The truth is, God never called us to live in the shadow of someone else's purpose. He called us to live fully and joyfully in the assignment He has given us. Joining me to unpack this is my dear friend, powerhouse Bible teacher, and best-selling author, Priscilla Shirer!
April 24, 2025Hello and Happy Day! This is Dr. MaryAnn Diorio, Novelist and Story Coach, welcoming you to another episode of Winning with the Word. Today is Thursday, April 24, 2025, and this is episode #4 in Series 2025. This episode is titled, “Do You Know Who You Are?"Let me ask the question again. Do You know who you are?You may be thinking, What a ridiculous question! Of course, I know who I am. I'm an accountant. Or, I'm a plumber. Or, I'm an electrician. Or, I'm a lawyer. Or, I'm a teacher. Or, I'm a basketball coach. Or, I'm the CEO of XYZ Company. Or, I'm a mom. Or, I'm a grandfather—and on and on and on it can go.But let me ask you a question: Is that who you really are? What if your career were suddenly stripped from you? What if, God forbid, your family and friends were suddenly taken from you? Who would you be then?Have you ever considered this profound question? If not, I would urge you to do so. For you see, who you believe you are is at the very foundation of your purpose on this earth. Who you believe yourself to be will determine your path in life, and whether that path takes you to fulfillment or to destruction, to life or to death.Sadly, most of us grow up with the idea that we will discover our identity in our job or career. And so, we plod along, year after year, until one day we realize that, despite the outward success, we feel empty on the inside. As a Life Coach, I have had numerous clients over the years come to me in their forties and fifties, admitting that the career they thought would satisfy them never did. In almost every single case, the client discovered that he was not living in God's purpose for his life, but in his own.Recently, I have been discipling my three teenage granddaughters using the outstanding Lifeway Bible study titled Defined. It was created by the Kendrick Brothers, producers of several powerful Christian movies, including The Overcomer. (As an aside, if you haven't seen The Overcomer, I urge you to do so.) In the Defined series for Girls, author and Bible teacher Priscilla Shirer discusses the topic of identity with a group of young women who face the identity struggle all of us face at some point in life. You, too, may be struggling to know who you are and why you're here on this earth. You, too, may be wondering how to discover who you really are. If so, stay with me until the end of this podcast. I'm going to give you some insights you may never have considered before in your journey toward discovering who you really are. Now, hear what I'm going to say next because it is a game-changer. There is only one way to discover who you truly are, and that is by turning to God for the answer. I'm going to repeat that because it's critically important: There is only one way to discover who you truly are, and that is by turning to God for the answer. Now, before you get upset with me, consider these four points, taken from the Defined study:1_God made you. Only the one who made something can define what it is. If you create something—let's say a work of art or a tool of some sort—only you have the right to say what it is.2_God owns you. He purchased you with the greatest price of all, the Blood of His Son Jesus Christ. If you purchase something, it's yours and only you have the right to do with it what you choose.3_God has authority over you. Only the creator of something has authority over his creation. Only the creator of something can determine the purpose for which he created it. Since God created you, He alone can determine your purpose. Only you have authority over something you create.4_ God knows you better than anyone knows you, even you yourself. Because God made you, no one knows you better than He does. So no one else has the right to tell you who you are. If you create a painting, no one besides you has the right to tell you what the painting means. Now, considering these four points, doesn't it make sense then that God alone can tell you who you are?

Something incredible happened February 28th and March 1. Over 20,000 events took place across 183 countries, uniting believers in prayer, worship, and commissioning to reach the world with the gospel. Gather 25 was more than an event—it was a call to action for everybody, everywhere. Across the world, from living rooms in the U.S. to churches in Rwanda, from dorm rooms in Malaysia to arenas in South America, the church came alive. In this episode, Jennie reflects on what just took place and what happens next. If you've ever wondered what it looks like for God's people to move together, this is it. We are sharing highlights from teachers like Priscilla Shirer from North America, Pastor Charles Wandera from Africa, Louie Giglio live from Eastern Europe, Christine Caine from Western Europe, Luke DeJong live from Oceania, a powerful prayer from Nick and Pippa Gumbel and a closing moment from Jennie! Women are bombarded with seemingly positive messages—you're enough; you are perfect just the way you are; you're worthy. In this episode of The Woman of Faith Podcast, I'm diving into a topic close to my heart: how faith can help turn your dreams into reality. Have you ever felt God place a big dream in your heart, but fear or uncertainty held you back from pursuing it? Or maybe you've started the journey but faced so many obstacles that you're questioning if it's still worth it? Today, we're going to explore how faith, trust in God's timing, and taking action are key to turning those dreams into something tangible. I'll be sharing insights from scripture, including Habakkuk 2:2-3, where God urges us to write the vision and trust in His appointed time. We'll also look at powerful examples like Priscilla Shirer and my own personal story, showing how faith leads to extraordinary outcomes, even in the face of setbacks. I'll also take you through Joseph's journey, where betrayal and imprisonment didn't derail his dream, but rather prepared him for God's perfect timing. Remember, the challenges we face aren't detours—they're part of God's process. Whether you're feeling stuck or overwhelmed, this episode will equip you with practical strategies and lessons to pursue your God-given dreams with courage and perseverance. As we close, I encourage you to reflect on these questions: What dream has God placed in your heart that you've been afraid to pursue? What's one step you can take this week to move closer to making that dream a reality? What's one challenge holding you back, and how can you trust God to overcome it? I challenge you to take action: This week, spend time in prayer, write down the vision God has given you, and take one small, faith-filled step forward. If today's episode inspired you, share it with a friend who needs encouragement to pursue their own God-given dreams. I'm excited to see you take the next step in making your dreams a reality, knowing that God is faithful to bring His promises to fruition in His perfect timing. Don't forget to leave a comment, rating or both. Thanks for listening.

Living on PurposePhilippians 1:12-26Message Slides For the bulletin in PDF form, click here. To Live is Christ - Live to advance the Gospel…not myself. - Live for the progress and joy of others. To Die is Gain - Death means being with Christ for those who are in Christ. - Death can be faced confidently for those who are in Christ.Home Church Questions1. In Philippians 1:21, we discover Paul's purpose in life: “to live is Christ.” Most people don't seem to live with this purpose. What are some examples of other purposes for which people live? 2. “To live is Christ” means I live to advance the Gospel . . . not myself (1:12-18). Paul views his current situation as an opportunity to advance the Gospel, even though he is imprisoned. What are some practical next steps you can take to advance the Gospel where God has placed you? 3. All people are longing for meaning and purpose. Why is this? How would you explain to someone that “to live is Christ” is the purpose that will truly bring satisfaction and joy? 4. “To live is Christ” means I live for the progress and joy of others (1:25-26). I experience joy by working for the progress and joy of others. This teaching is counter-intuitive, but we see it throughout the Bible. Why is joy found through working for the joy of others? Have you experienced this? What next steps can you take this week to work for the progress and joy of someone else? 5. Paul says, “to die is gain” (1:21). He is not afraid to think about death and talk about death. Do we think and talk about death a healthy amount and in a healthy way? Why or why not? 6. Paul says “to die is gain” because death means being with Christ for those who are in Christ. We often emphasize that death means escaping the pains of this world. And we often emphasize death means enjoying the benefits of heaven. But we don't often emphasize that death means being with Christ. Why should this be what we emphasize? What does it look like to emphasize this? 7. Paul says “to die is gain” because death can be faced confidently for those who are in Christ. We see Paul's confidence in vv.18-20. What are some reasons we can be confident in the face of death? 8. Are there any conversations you need to have with someone as you think about death? Is there someone in your life who is not confident about facing death? Do you need to have a conversation with someone so that you can become confident about facing death? Christine Caine's Life & Leadership Podcast with Propel Women
Lead with purpose with a degree from Trevecca. Find out more here. In this episode, Christine Caine and Priscilla Shirer offer a wealth of wisdom about surrendering our lives fully to the plan and purposes of God, no matter the call or the cost. We often find ourselves wondering if we are hearing from God correctly, if we are overthinking, and what might happen if we “get it wrong.” In today's conversation, Christine and Priscilla bring practical methods for checking-in with God and moving forward with confidence. SHOW NOTES: Daily Surrender Jesus says, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Priscilla remarks that to take up our cross “means something has to die. We have to be willing to loosen our grip on the things that we hold dear for the sake of making sure that nothing and no one is in first place over him.” An Anchored Soul Christine asks how we can know if something has taken first place in our lives. Priscilla gives us three practical indicators: 1. Our time. If we aren't spending time with the Lord it's because he's not a priority, not because we don't have time. 2. Our treasures. Are we giving to the Lord and his work? 3. Our significance. What have I tied myself to and how can I ask the Lord to help me recalibrate? A Mother's Prayer For mothers, surrendering their children can be hard. Priscilla reminds us that we don't have control over older children, but we can pray the Holy Spirit speaks to them, works in them, protects them, and transforms their hearts in ways only God can. Prayer calls down heaven's power onto our earthly circumstances, reaping a mighty harvest from the petitions sown. Follow Priscilla @PriscillaShirer and check out her new movie, The Forge. Only 1.2% identify as Christians and just 0.3% as evangelical believers. Though Japan has a rich cultural history and a highly developed economy, many are spiritually indifferent, focused on materialism, careers, and possessions. Japan's honor-shame culture places immense pressure on individuals, contributing to high suicide rates, as people fear bringing dishonor to themselves or their families. The need for laborers to share the Gospel is urgent, with over 2,300 workers needed to reach them. Pray that the Lord will raise up laborers to share the message of Christ with the Japanese, particularly through business connections and local churches. Ask the Holy Spirit to soften their hearts and open their eyes to the truth of the Gospel, so they will boldly share their faith with family and friends.FinancesWeekly Budget 35,297Giving For 12/15 44,365Giving For 12/22 65,677YTD Budget 882,429 Giving 850,826 OVER/(UNDER) (31,603) Fellowship 101We invite you to join us on Sunday, January 12, at 9:00 a.m. to learn more about Fellowship. Goring “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” —Psalm 46:1 NIV Safety. We all crave it, especially when our world feels like it is spinning out of control. There have been times in my life when I felt like there is no safe place for us here on Earth. But in recent years, God helped me see that He is our safe place. I realize that no matter how unsafe our circumstances are and no matter where we live on this planet, we can go to God for safety. The Bible says that He is our refuge and strength. God is present when we face trouble. He can protect us and deliver us from evil. We just need to trust Him. There is a song by Karen Clark Sheard called “A Secret Place”. The opening lyrics of this song touch on how cruel this world can be, filling you with pain that pierces your soul. But, Sheard sings, there is a secret place where we can go for refuge. It is a place filled with peace and safety that only God can provide. A place where God’s love for you surrounds and heals your hurting heart. Sheard calls this place a “tabernacle”. It is not always a physical place on Earth like a literal modern-day church building, sanctuary or Biblical tabernacle. I believe Sheard is singing about having a place where you and God can meet in secret. Some call this their “prayer closet”. This can mean you walk into your actual closet where you hang your clothes and keep your shoes then make space to meet with God there. After watching the Christian movie “War Room” many people were inspired to create a prayer closet like Miss Clara’s. For those of you who have not seen that movie, allow me to explain what I mean. In the movie, Miss Clara (played by Karen Abercrombie), is an elderly woman with a strong prayer life. During a tour of her house that she is trying to sell, she shows her real estate agent (Elizabeth Jordan, played by Priscilla Shirer) her closet. As Miss Clara opens the door to her closet that is located inside her bedroom, she tells Elizabeth that this is her “war room”. As Elizabeth enters the small but spacious closet, she sees how Miss Clara made room in it to post her handwritten prayer requests written on paper onto the previous empty walls inside her closet. There are years-worth of prayer requests and praise reports from the prayers God has answered. Miss Clara didn’t just pray for her husband when he was alive; she prayed for everyone God put on her heart. She didn’t allow her mind to ruminate over the pain and problems in the world; Miss Clara sought God in prayer for victories she knew only He could accomplish. This is how she fought and won all her battles over the years. I would say that Miss Clara’s prayer closet “war room” was also her secret place that Sheard sings about because that was where she could shut the noisy world out and commune with God in a private, quiet, safe place. It probably is also where—outside of a Bible-believing church—she felt God’s presence strongest. It is clear to me that God comforted Miss Clara’s troubled heart every time she sought His Presence in her prayer closet. Miss Clara is a fictional character but the concept about having a prayer closet in real life is Biblical. The Bible says in Matthew 6:6 (NIV), “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” Now the Bible doesn’t say exactly how or when God will reward you for spending time in secret prayer with Him, but it does say that we are blessed when we take refuge in Him (Psalm 34:8). I believe those blessings can mean that we gain a closer relationship with our Creator. We get to know Him better as our Heavenly Father and we feel safe in His arms. The Bible describes God as our “fortress” (Psalm 46:11). And the good news is we don’t need to have an actual closet to pray to Him in because God is literally everywhere in this world. We can seek refuge in Him anywhere we are on this planet. He is always with us. There is nowhere we can hide from God. He sees all and knows all (Hebrews 4:13). We can trust that He sees our pain that we experience when the world is cold and cruel. God wants us to come to Him for comfort and healing. The Bible says in Psalm 34:18 (NIV), “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” When we go to God for safety, we can trust that with Him on our side, we are going to be okay. In closing, listen a song that Tasha Layton sings called “Into the Sea”. I believe it will encourage your heart. Intersecting Faith and Life: How does it feel to know that God is our safe place? What are some examples of references to light in music or movies? 2. Read John 1:6-13. Jesus is described as the true light (1:9). What does it mean that Jesus is the light? 3. John references John the Baptist at the beginning and throughout the chapter (see 1:6-8 and 1:19-42). Why do you think he gives so much attention to him?4. One reason John the Baptist is introduced is because his life is an example of the type of conflict that surrounds Jesus. What are some other examples of conflict we see throughout Jesus' life? Why is there so much conflict surrounding Jesus? 5. Why would it be foolish to conclude that Jesus is merely a “nice person?” What are some reasons that we can't respond to Jesus merely in a neutral way?6. John 1:10-11 addresses the irony and tragedy of a world that doesn't know its Creator. What are some examples that reveal the world does not know its Creator? What are some examples of how you tend to ignore your Creator and His good ways in your life?7. According to John 1:12, how should we respond to Jesus? What does it mean to receive Him and believe? What benefits do we experience when we receive Him and believe?8. Believing in Jesus involves humility. Why? What are some ways/reasons it can be difficult for you to accept God's gracious gift? How can you address these challenges so you experience all the benefits of His gift to us in Christ?Mission Highlight - Pray for the Unreached: The Arain in PakistanThe Arain people, historically farmers, have risen to prominence in Pakistan as influential leaders in politics, law, and other fields. Pray for the Holy Spirit to touch their hearts through dreams, visions, and Scripture in their many languages and for them to see past Western Christianity to the true message of Jesus. Pray that Arain leaders in government and business boldly share the truth of Jesus, and that families find salvation and spread His blessings throughout their communities.Fellowship 101 We invite you to join us on Sunday, January 12, at 9:00 a.m. to learn more about Fellowship. Why does John make these connections?2. John's Gospel is unique from the other three Gospels. For example, we learn the Christmas story begins before creation (because the Son was present at creation). Why is it important for us to consider that the Christmas story begins before creation?3. If we believe Jesus is truly God, this should make other teachings in the Bible simpler to embrace. What are some teachings in the Bible that become less challenging when we realize Jesus is God?4. Who is an example of a person you have wanted to meet in your life? Why should it excite us that God wants to be known by us? What should we do if we don't value that He wants to be known by us?5. Jesus is the light, and we need the light because we are in darkness. What are some examples of darkness we experience in our lives and in our world? What does it look like for Jesus to be the light in our darkness?6. J.I. Why is it important we consider why he was born as we celebrate Christmas?7. When we believe Jesus is the Word and the light Who has come into the world for us, it should give us great confidence that the darkness will not overcome the light (1:5). What are some specific ways you can be encouraged in your life right now knowing the darkness will not overcome the light? The newest film by the legendary Kendrick brothers, currently playing in theaters, feels impeccably focus-grouped for maximum impact of a Christian movie in 2024. We're not surprised that director Alex Kendrick and producer Stephen Kendrick were able to create another competent and successful Christian film. They have a history of huge box office success stories on relatively low budgets, including WAR ROOM (2015) which notably became the #1 film in America during its second week of release. On a reported budget of $5 million, THE FORGE has already grossed $26 million in its first month, which is huge in the faith-based genre. THE FORGE seems like a spiritual sequel to WAR ROOM; it casts a lot of the same actors from WAR ROOM in extremely similar roles, including Priscilla Shirer (daughter of mega-church pastor Tony Evans) as a strong but exasperated mother struggling with family issues. In THE FORGE, newcomer Aspen Kennedy plays recent high school graduate Isaiah Wright, a directionless 19-year-old without a father who is unemployed and seems to have no passions in life beyond video games and basketball. When he gets a part time job at local business Moore Fitness, CEO Joshua Moore (played by Cameron Arnett) takes Isaiah under his wing and becomes the father he never had. With the help of an exclusive Christian men's club called “The Forge”, Isaiah finally feels motivation to become the man he has always wanted to be. But unspoken in the film's plot is how the setting of THE FORGE, Moore Fitness, is meant to resemble an Amazon fulfillment warehouse. THE FORGE attempts to bring dignity and motivation to fulfillment center employees through an unimaginable plot line where Isaiah and his coworkers volunteer to work a 24 hour shift to save the company. Sadly, this feels laughably out of touch for a film that otherwise does an eerily good job of elevating the mundane of an everyday Christian's life in today's fallen world. Jamie recently released a statement on Instagram that she is stepping away from podcasting for a while. As a team, we have decided to air the six conversations that were recorded prior to May 20th. We decided to do this to honor the guests, the projects they have worked on, and the stories they are sharing.Time after time when we hear stories of people encountering Jesus, it almost always includes a story of hearing or seeing what God has done in someone else's life. Priscilla shares the encounters she's had with Jesus as she's learned to surrender her own will, how God launched her into full-time ministry, and the impact of sharing your testimony with others.
