Friends, as we resume Ordinary Time, it's appropriate that we're looking at a portrait of the Church, because we're coming back, if you want, to the ordinary work of the Church up and down the ages to the present day. Our Gospel from the tenth chapter of Luke gives us our marching orders—from going on mission together and staying rooted in prayer, to trusting in providence and supporting the work of the Church, to curing the sick and proclaiming the kingdom of God.

When Jesus appeared to the disciples, He gave them some orders – to go and make disciples. Some 2,000 years later, those are still our marching orders as the church.  This week we look at Matthew 28:16-20 to see what we can learn from and how we can be encouraged by those words.

This sermon on "Marching Orders: The Call to Joy" examines Philippians 4:4-7, focusing on Paul's command to "rejoice in the Lord always" as part of a series on living the Christian life as the "church militant" in a troubled world. Dr. Beach establishes that "thy kingdom come" is a declaration of war between kingdoms, not merely a sentiment. Christians are engaged in spiritual battle, struggling with sin, raising children in a hostile world, and fighting impure thoughts. Some people are not looking for God. Others are people who are ready to hear, and the Lord knows their name and is determined to reach them so they may be saved. In Luke 9:1-6, Jesus is sending out the 12 apostles which He has selected for a trial run. Their assignment is to preach the kingdom of God, pray for the sick, cast out demons. They are to do what they have seen Him doing. Jesus is training His 12 because He wants to reach everyone who is looking for Him.
