With pitchers and catchers scheduled to report teams later this month, it is time to review our past conversation about foul ball safety. In 2021, FTINX spoke with Jordan Skopp about an ongoing hazard all baseball fans face when going to the ballpark. The Scene, episode 2:2 revisits this topic with a conversation with Jana Goldbloom Brody, author of Sit Behind the Nets. Jana's mom, Linda Goldbloom tragically died when she was struck by a foul ball while attending a game at Dodger Stadium in 2018. Jana tells FTINFX about her journey from being a grieving daughter to being a staunch advocate for making ballparks safer for fans at all levels. Our conversation delves into how these preventable accidents at the ballpark were allowed to occur. More importantly, how the actions of determined individuals made the baseball establishment rethink past policies, and the ongoing push to ensure ballparks at every level take the necessary measures to ensure foul ball safety is taken seriously moving forward. Check out this episode and Jana's book Sit Behind the Nets to learn more about one individual's quest to make the ballpark experience safer for all patrons. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ken-harlan/support
It is estimated that more than 5,000 fans have been injured, some seriously, by foul balls in Major League Baseball (MLB) and minor league baseball stadiums since 2012. While significant improvements have been made at the Major League level in recent years (in terms of protective netting being installed to the end of the dugouts or down to the foul poles) fans in some minor league and college baseball parks are still unprotected, except directly behind home plate. Our guests for this podcast are Jordan Skopp, founder of FoulBallSafety.com and Greg Wilkowski, a Chicago based attorney. Wilkowski has filed a class action lawsuit against the Peoria Chiefs, a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals in Peoria, Illinois. Chiefs management has refused to put up protective netting at their field beyond the netting directly beyond home plate. The result has been numerous fan injuries. We discuss the historical problem of foul balls injuring fans, the "Baseball Rule" that teams have used to avoid liability, the specific case in Peoria, why some teams are still hesitant to put up protective netting, and the fact the vast majority of players are for more protective netting in stadiums.

There is a risk to fans and families attending baseball games that seems to get little to no attention, although it should. We came up with an idea to do a reflection episode after every 3 interviews. This will give you, the listeners, a chance to get to know these two dumb dudes. We're not sure if it's going to be a permanent fixture, but wanted to give it a try. If we get a decent amount of downloads we'll keep doing them. It's a little bit of seriousness with a whole lot of fun!

Episode 3 is with Jordan Skopp, an author and advocate for Major League Baseball fan safety. Particularly in the realm of foul ball incidents. We discuss the numbers on how many people per year are being injured, how the MLB's response has been almost non-existent, and what Jordan is doing is make ballparks safer for everyone. If you have been a injured at an MLB or minor league ballpark, please reach out to Jordan at info@foulballsafetynow.com or visit his website at http://www.foulballsafetynow.com
JORDAN SKOPP, the founder of "Foul Ball Safety Now", will join us to discuss his efforts in getting baseball teams to place protecting fencing around the stadium to protect fans from being struck by an errant ball or bat during a game. FROM HIS WEBSITE: "Foul Ball Safety Now! is a campaign started by Jordan Skopp, a Brooklyn realtor, lifelong baseball fan, and author of a forthcoming book about the wildly overlooked scandal in the professional baseball industry – the all-too-frequent incidence of fans being maimed by dangerous foul balls due to the lack of extended protective netting, and related failures to educate fans about their assumed risk at the ballgame. NBC News compiled data from first aid contractors working for only four out of the 30 MLB teams, and reported that at least 701 fans had been injured by baseballs from 2012 to 2019. NBC's own research found an additional 107 injuries in that time period. That's 808 foul ball fan injuries. Factoring in the other 26 MLB teams, that would come out to roughly 5,000 fan injuries over the same period. Keep in mind, these figures are only for MLB, and do not account for any of the fan injuries in the minor leagues where there are three times more games played. Ask yourself, what government or regulated industry would tolerate that injury rate in any other aspect of commerce? Baseball fans have had to figure this out for ourselves. No government has come to the rescue, and professional baseball certainly hasn't stepped up adequately to protect us. We must take it upon ourselves to fight for our safety." www.foulballsafetynow.com

Jordan Skopp, advocate for foul ball victims, describes the unique situation of injuries at America's pastime - baseball games. An average of 20,000 foul balls fly around the ballparks of MLB with 2 to 3 times that number at the minor league parks. Jordan provides ideas on what to do about this risk to the fans. The first step is to have an honest discussion about the issue.

Fan injuries in baseball are on the rise. NBC News accumulated data from first aid contractors working for only four out of the 30 MLB teams and reported which at least 701 fans had been injured by baseballs from 2012 to 2019. The research indicated 808 foul ball fan injuries. Factoring in the other 26 MLB teams, that would come out to roughly 5,000 fan injuries over the same period. Keep in mind, these figures are only for MLB, and do not account for any of the fan injuries in the minor leagues where there are three times more games played. Foul Ball Safety Now! is a crusade commissioned by Jordan Skopp, a Brooklyn realtor, lifelong baseball fan, and author of a forthcoming book about the tremendously overlooked scandal in the professional baseball industry – the all-too-frequent incidence of fans being maimed by dangerous foul balls due to the lack of extended protective netting, and related failures to educate fans about their assumed risk at the ballgame. Skopp joined me this week to tell me more. For more information: https://www.foulballsafetynow.com/
