Vinny Mauri was working the floor at a running shoe store in Ohio. Then he ran 2:05:54 and became the fastest American marathon debutant in history.Nobody was watching. That's not hyperbole. While the running world was fixated on Sabastian Sawe's sub-two-hour performance in London, a 25-year-old from Warren, Ohio quietly dismantled the record books at the Glass City Marathon in Toledo—running solo, without a sponsor, without a pacer, and without anyone outside his circle knowing what was coming. Vinny Mauri's 2:05:54 didn't just break Ryan Hall's American debut record of 2:08:24. It shattered it by nearly three minutes.Dominic sat down with Vinny just two days after the race; before the contracts, before the headlines fully caught up, before the moment had time to calcify into legend. What you get is the raw version: how Vinny built this alone in Ohio, grinding 5:40 and 5:50 pace every day, ripping 20- and 22-mile long runs at five-minute pace with no team, no coach, and no fanfare. A former Arizona State and Notre Dame runner with a 13:34 5K under his belt and a moderately successful collegiate résumé, Vinny never announced himself as a marathon talent. He just trained, showed up in Toledo, won by fifteen minutes, and then talked about what comes next. This is the conversation that happens before everything changes. Share it with one person who needs to believe in what's still possible.Tap into the Vinny Mauri Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! “You can't just say from nowhere that you're going to podium. My bib number was 15, which means there were 14 faster than me on paper. What you can do is read your body during the race. In Boston this year, once it started unfolding, I just knew everything was clicking.”My guest for today's episode is Zouhair Talbi. This is his second time on the show this year. We had him on in January after his victory at the Houston Marathon in 2:05.On Monday at the Boston Marathon, he finished fifth overall in 2:03:45, became the top American in the race, and broke Ryan Hall's American course record that had stood since 2011. He did it in regular prescription glasses, after back-to-back marathon blocks with barely ten days off between each, and after a training build that included a half marathon PR at the NYC Half while still in the middle of a full training load.Zouhair was born in Morocco and grew up there before coming to the United States, where he now trains in Colorado Springs with coach Scott Simmons. CITIUS MAG first covered him at the Trials of Miles Texas Qualifier in February 2021, and this performance at Boston was a long time in the making. In this conversation, he takes us inside the lead pack on race day, explains what it felt like to run next to John Korir and read the field in real time, and shares his honest thinking about what it will take to go from 2:03 to being a genuine contender at the 2028 U.S. Olympic Trials and beyond. He also speaks directly and thoughtfully about what it means to represent the United States, and what he wants his son — born here, growing up here — to see when he watches his father compete.____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavezGuest: Zouhair Talbi | @zouhairathleProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSXENDURANCE: When you finish a hard workout, the work isn't actually done. In the last 14 months, Sara Hall has shattered the American marathon masters record, finished runner-up at back-to-back marathons, and proved (once again) that elite performance doesn't have an expiration date. Sara most recently finished second at the 2026 Houston Marathon with a time of 2:26:26. At 42 years of age, she is still setting Masters records, including her 2:23:45 showing at the 2024 Valencia Marathon. Even with a 5th place finish at the 2024 Marathon Olympic Trials, she steadfastly remains an elite runner on the world stage. Sara's personal best in the marathon is an impressive 2:20:32, set at The Marathon Project in 2020. She holds the U.S. masters marathon record for the 40+ age group with her 2:23:45 time from Valencia. Even more impressively, she has competed in eight consecutive U.S. Olympic Trials since 2004, spanning distances from the 1500m to the marathon.Sara is coached by her husband, Ryan Hall, who held the American record for the half marathon for many years before a new crop of men bested his time in 2025 and 2026. Sara Hall's career doesn't fit neatly into eras. It stretches across them. From Olympic Trials as a teenager to podium finishes in her 40s, Sara has quietly built one of the most resilient résumés in American distance running history.Tap into the Sara Hall Special. In this episode we're talking about iconic moments from the greatest rivalry in the game. The focus is England or, more often than not, Great Britain against the old enemy, Australia. Ahead of the first Ashes series in 22 years, the panel discuss and debate what are, undoubtedly, some of the most memorable moments in the history of rugby league. From the game changing 'Invincibles' and 'Unbeatables' of the 1980s, to the ankle tap on Kallum Watkins in 2017 which denied England the chance to draw level and perhaps go on and win the World Cup for the first time in 45 years. In between, two tries from Henderson Gill, the second of which was celebrated with "a bit of a boogie", as described by the Australian commentators, were the highlight in 1988 of Great Britain's first victory against the Aussies in a decade and their first win Down Under for 18 years. Two years later, Ricky Stuart dummied his way up the field before finding Mal Meninga in support for a memorable, match-winning score at Old Trafford in the 'greatest ever test' to level the series and ultimately set the platform for Australia to retain the Ashes.1992 was the last time a Great Britain team took on a full tour of Australasia, led by the legendary Malcolm Reilly, the highlight of the series for the tourists was undoubtedly the Second Test in a cold and wet Melbourne. An all-Wigan pack led GB to a 33-10 victory, equalling their biggest ever win against Australia.Other iconic Great Britain moments up for discussion include Jonathan Davies' sensational try at Wembley, Adrian Morley's red card after 12 seconds and captain Jamie Peacock taking on Willie Mason after he'd floored Stuart Fielden. While, for England, there's Sam Burgess' 'breakthrough' score in the 2009 Four Nations Final and the controversy that became known as 'Pinkygate' after Ryan Hall had a late try ruled out which could have knocked Australia out of the 2014 Four Nations tournament. A decision England coach Steve McNamara described as “disappointing!”All iconic in their own right, but which will come out on top?
“If I had even one race like one of my many races this year in another year, I would have been like, “This year was phenomenal because I had that one really good race.' This year felt like every race but one went very well. Every race, I ended up like, ‘I can't believe I just did that' or, ‘That was awesome!' Things maybe weren't perfect, but a lot of my races were close to perfect and that was special to me.”My guest for today's episode is Conner Mantz, the new American record holder in the marathon. On a crisp October morning in Chicago, Mantz ran 2:04:43, smashing Khalid Khannouchi's 23-year-old mark and becoming the fastest American ever over 26.2 miles. It's a record that survived generations of greats from Meb Keflezighi to Ryan Hall to Galen Rupp but Conner Mantz, the soft-spoken racing assassin, made it real.If you've caught all of Conner's post-marathon recap podcast episodes that we've done on this show, you'll notice that he carries the same naïve faith that once made him think he could win NCAA titles and make Olympic teams. It's the same inner voice that still says he can win a World Marathon Major some day or medal at the 2028 Olympics. We talk about what it means to finally get the record, how the race played out into something historic and the proof of what hard work and self-belief can bring you to.____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Conner Mantz | @connermantz on Instagram Produced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on Instagram____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSNOMIO: Made with 80% broccoli sprout juice, 15% lemon juice, and 5% sugar, Nomio activates your body's natural defense systems to reduce lactate, speed recovery, and enhance muscle adaptation. “Probably 20, hopefully 24 miles, I'm working with people. But then somewhere between the last 10K and the last two miles, it's going to be a race with whoever is around me. You never know how these races play out, but hopefully I'm going to see people in front of me, I'm going to catch them…and place as high as I can. That's how I see this race playing out: I'm in a pack for 18 to 20 or 24 miles and after that I'm hawking down people.”My recurring guest is back – Conner Mantz is back before he takes on one of the longest-standing marks in American distance running: Khalid Khannouchi's 2:05:38 American record in the marathon. It's been 23 years since anyone has touched that time and if there's an American ready to rewrite the standard, it's Mantz. He's already run faster — 2:05:08 this spring in Boston — but because that course isn't record-eligible. Chicago will be his chance to make it official. As we've unpacked on this show all throughout the year, it's been a breakthrough year for him. In January, he took down Ryan Hall's American half marathon record with a 59:17 in Houston. He ran a little faster in another non-record eligible course at the NYC Half in March. In April, he went stride for stride with 2:02 and 2:03 guys in Boston and finished fourth – just shy of the podium. This weekend, he'll line up in Chicago as America's top marathoner and someone who continues to take the next steps to becoming one of the best in the world. He's got quiet confidence and we've grown accustomed to seeing him test his limits in workouts and these races. In this episode, we talk about what it takes to chase a record, how this build compares to others, what's his race plan and how he's sizing up his competitors.____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Conner Mantz | @connermantz on Instagram Produced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on Instagram____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSHOKA: We're takin' over Happy Camper Chicago (Old Town) with HOKA during the Chicago Marathon festivities. Rev. Ryan Hall
After flipping more than 400 homes across 18 years, Ryan Hall found himself stuck when foreclosure moratoriums dried up his courthouse deal flow. In this episode, he shares how he pivoted—first into spec builds, then into off-market marketing with DealMachine. You'll hear how he targets infill lots, filters for flip-ready homes, and uses his builder's license to stay profitable in a crowded market.
