Um curitibano vem fazendo sucesso na Venezuela graças ao esporte nacional do país: o beisebol. Leonardo Reginatto é um dos jogadores mais reconhecidos das torcidas e quadras venezuelanas. Ele já passou por várias equipes e atualmente joga no Caribes de Anzoátegui, cuja sede fica na cidade de Puerto La Cruz (no leste do país). Ele cumpre na Venezuela o sonho de viver de um esporte ainda em expansão no Brasil.  Elianah Jorge, correspondente da RFI Brasil em Caracas“Para mim era um sonho poder ter jogado essa Liga, sei que é a qualidade que essa Liga tem, uma Liga de jogadores com muitos nomes, com muitas experiências, então para mim era sempre um sonho. Graças a Deus eu pude cumpri-lo! Já ganhei essa Liga duas vezes: ganhei o ano passado e também ganhei com o Magallanes um ano antes. Então estou muito feliz em poder ter ganhado dois títulos aqui nessa Liga, onde eu sempre sonhei jogar”, diz o jogador.O beisebol chegou muito cedo à vida do brasileiro, quando Leonardo Reginatto ainda era um menino. “Eu comecei no esporte por causa de um vizinho de nacionalidade japonesa. O beisebol no Brasil foi trazidos por eles, os japoneses. A gente estava morando no mesmo condomínio e eles convidaram a gente para começar a jogar. Eu tinha na época cerca de 5 ou 6 anos. Meu irmão já tinha oito, e o mais velho dez anos. Foi nessa idade que a gente começou (a jogar) e por causa do convite deles que a gente conheceu o beisebol”.Das brincadeiras de criança, Reginatto tomou gosto pelo beisebol e fez do esporte sua profissão. Ele, inclusive, representou o país natal em torneios internacionais.  “O que mais me emociona é tudo que o beisebol pode me proporcionar, conhecer vários lugares, jogar um esporte que eu me apaixonei desde pequeno como profissão, já faz 14, 15 anos que eu estou jogando, então poder representar o Brasil também e viver do esporte para mim sempre foi um sonho. A paixão que eu tenho pelo beisebol é o que me motiva”, destaca.A Venezuela é o único país da América do Sul onde o beisebol é esporte nacional. Essa história anda lado a lado com a expansão da produção de petróleo em território venezuelano, no final do século 19. Os americanos que chegaram trabalhar nos campos petroleiros jogavam beisebol nas horas vagas. A popularidade foi aumentando até o beisebol virar o esporte nacional. Enquanto nos países vizinhos abundam quadras de futebol, na Venezuela elas são de beisebol. Leonardo conta parte de sua história, vivida nas quadras de vários países da região: “Eu fui para os Estados Unidos, joguei 10 anos lá.  Também jogo na liga do México agora. Joguei em uma na liga do Canadá, joguei um pouco na liga do Panamá. Joguei na liga dominicana e agora na Venezuela. Essa vai ser minha sexta temporada aqui”. No beisebol, um jogador pode atuar em diferentes times, desde que não sejam do mesmo país e nem durante a mesma competição, a chamada liga. Por isso Leo compete na Venezuela na Liga de Inverno, e em seguida vai para o México atuar na disputa local. Atualmente, os times da Liga Venezuelana de Beisebol Profissional (LVBP) buscam a classificação para a Série do Caribe, o torneio anual jogado em fevereiro onde o vitorioso de cada país busca o título de campeão. Reginatto lembra seus melhores momentos:  “Nessa liga aqui da Venezuela, os melhores momentos foram ser campeão com Magalhães, que foi meu primeiro título. Logo no ano passado com o Tiburones também. E também com o Tiburones a gente conseguiu vencer a Série do Caribe, que é o campeão geral. Por exemplo da liga venezuelana, da liga mexicana, da liga dominicana, da liga de Curaçao. Eles fazem um torneio dos campeões e a gente acabou sendo campeão também. Isso se chama a Série do Caribe. Então esses foram os momentos mais importantes, com certeza”.O beisebol é um esporte de estratégia. As partidas podem variar de uma hora e meia a até seis horas. Na quadra, os dois times adversários, integrados por nove jogadores, buscam fazer pontos após o jogador acertar a bola com o bastão e correr pelas quatro bases do campo - o chamado “run”. De maneira bem simplificada: para anotar uma corrida (run), o jogador na posição de rebatedor precisa acertar a bola e correr pelas bases até voltar à base, também chamada “home plate”. O trabalho do time que está defendendo é impedir que o adversário consiga alcançar as bases e, assim, fazer ponto. Criado nos Estados Unidos, em 1846, a linguagem deste esporte é bastante própria. Muitos termos foram mantidos em inglês. Leonardo explica a posição em que joga: “Eu sempre joguei de “infielder”, que são aqueles que ficam mais à frente pegando as bolas rasteiras. Essa tem sido a minha posição de toda a vida”.Para iniciar no beisebol é preciso investir na indumentária, e sai caro. Além da bola, é preciso o bastão, luvas, uniforme com boné e tênis e, dependendo da posição do jogador, um capacete e um espécie de protetor frontal. Mas para aqueles que viram profissionais o investimento que vale cada centavo. O beisebol é um dos esportes mais movimentam dinheiro no mundo. Só a Major League Baseball (MLB), organização americana de beisebol profissional, gira cerca de U$ 10 bilhões por ano. Na Venezuela o beisebol movimenta cerca de U$ 35 milhões por temporada, de acordo com o Instituto de Estudos Superiores de Administração (IESA).      Leonardo não comenta quanto ganha. Na Venezuela o salário de um jogador iniciante supera os cinco mil dólares.  Mas José Altuve, o jogador venezuelano mais bem pago da atualidade, ganha cerca de U$ 43 milhões por ano para jogar em um time dos Estados Unidos. Ganhos "vão além da parte financeira"“Os maiores êxitos, para mim, primeiro foi ter conseguido ser jogador profissional. Ter ganho dois títulos aqui na Venezuela, um também na própria Série do Caribe; ter ajudado o Brasil a se classificar para a Copa do Mundo uma vez. Para mim esses foram os momentos mais marcantes”, diz ele.Em seu histórico como jogador profissional de beisebol, Leonardo também comemora ter representado seu país natal: “Defendi a Seleção Brasileira quando pequeno, campeonatos pan-americanos, sul-americanos”. Nos dias de jogos, o clima nos estádios venezuelanos é de alegria. É comum a venda de uísque, cerveja, tequeños (tradicional salgado recheado com queijo), além da presença das mascotes de cada time. O do Caribes de Anzoátegui é o Caribito, um boneco branco grande vestido com o uniforme do time. Há rivalidade, mas é mais amena do que no Brasil e o risco de distúrbio entre as torcidas é quase nulo. Na Venezuela, a maior rivalidade recai sobre os torcedores do Leones de Caracas e os do Navegantes del Magallanes. O clima é mais familiar, se comparado aos estádios brasileiros.Leo identifica semelhanças: “Por exemplo, uma pessoa que nasceu em São Paulo, geralmente torce para o Corinthians, São Paulo, Palmeiras, esse tipo de coisa acontece aqui. Então, é uma liga com bastantes torcedores dos países. Eles acompanham bastante, transmitem na TV e tal. Nas finais os estádios sempre estão cheios. Tem aquela rivalidade, me lembra bastante o futebol do Brasil”.Assim como nos outros esportes, um atleta do beisebol não costuma passar dos 40 anos na carreira. Leonardo Reginatto espera poder ficar por mais tempo nas quadras fazendo o que mais gosta na vida: “Minha metas é seguir jogando nessas ligas de alto nível.  Não sei até onde eu vou jogar, na verdade, já tenho 34 anos. Continuar jogando com um bom nível, até onde eu conseguir, até onde eu aguentar, até onde eu tiver oportunidade”.

Valenzuela played 17 Major League Baseball (MLB) seasons, from 1980 to 1997 (except for a one-year sabbatical in Mexico in 1992). While he played for six MLB teams, his longest tenure — and most significant achievements — were with the Los Angeles Dodgers, which signed him in 1979 and gave him his MLB debut in 1980. Valenzuela batted and threw left-handed, with an unorthodox windup. He was one of a small number of pitchers who regularly threw a screwball in the modern era.Valenzuela enjoyed his breakout year in 1981, when "Fernandomania" rapidly catapulted him from relative obscurity to stardom. He won his first eight starts, five of them shutouts, and dazzled not just the Dodgers and their fans, but all of Major League Baseball. He finished with a record of 13–7 and had a 2.48 ERA in a season that was shortened by a player's strike. He became the first, and as of 2024, only player to win both the Cy Young and Rookie of the Year awards in the same season. The Dodgers won the World Series that year.Valenzuela peaked from 1981 to 1986, when he was named a National League (NL) All-Star in each season. He won an NL-leading 21 games in 1986, although Mike Scott of the Houston Astros narrowly beat him out in the Cy Young Award voting. Valenzuela was also one of the better hitting pitchers of his era. On June 29, 1990, Valenzuela threw his only MLB no-hitter against the St. Louis Cardinals, leading Los Angeles to a 6–0 home victory in his final season as a Dodger. Despite this renewed flash of greatness, the Dodgers unceremoniously released Valenzuela prior to the 1991 season. He spent the rest of his major league career with the California Angels, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, and St. Louis Cardinals, before pitching a couple of seasons in Mexico in his 40s.Valenzuela returned to the Dodgers organization after retiring, serving as a broadcaster from 2003 to 2024, the year of his death. He managed the Reds from 1984 to 1989.Rose was a switch hitter, and is MLB's all-time leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053), singles (3,215) and outs (10,328). To put it in perspective how big they were, they brought in more revenue than theater ticket sales.   To add to that, if a movie bombed in the theater, it could be saved by video rental. Also with the introduction of DVDs in the late 1990s, movie studios started doing direct to video movies that would be released in rental stores like Blockbuster.   Pre-Internet was a different era for retail sales. In the 1990s you had huge retail companies like Blockbuster for rental movies, Tower records for CDs and music, and Borders for books. In the 2000s with the rise of the Internet, these businesses were all under attack. Netflix was growing with streaming, iTunes add streaming music, and Amazon was out selling borders with book sales.   In the mid-1990s Blockbuster at its height was the dominant video rental store with 40% market share. Hollywood Video is their main competitor with 20% market share.   Per Alan, half the weekly rental business was done on Friday and Saturday night from 7 to 10 PM. Blockbuster on weekends was the place to be, where the community was literally gathering for family night in movie rentals. There were new releases that came out every week and this section of the store was usually the most popular.   With the introduction of the VCR circa 1985 the video rental business took off. There were tons of small mom and pop video rental stores. The business didn't really have to be run that well as the industry was exploding.   Prior to this it was very difficult to see old movies. You had to have seen them in the past in the theater or wait for Network TV to air them. There was no control and very limited choices.   With the onset of Blockbuster in 1985, the video industry became more organized and professional. Blockbuster also had 6000 movie titles to rent, and scaled fast, opening stores by the dozen+.   Cost for Blockbuster to buy a movie was $70 per movie. They needed to rent the movie 20 times just to break even.   Blockbuster stores count were 5500 stores in the US, 1000 were franchisees and then corporate owned 4500. Corporate stores were typically in the larger markets, while the franchises were in the mid and smaller markets.   Seg 2   Alan bio, in the 1980s straight out of school he went to work for HEB grocery, the second largest grocery company in Texas and privately held. It was a $25 billion company run by CEO Charles Burt   In 1986, with the rise of Blockbuster started with just 30 to 40 stores. In 1987 HEB grocery started in the video business using Blockbuster as a model. They would own single location stores that were about 5 to 7000 ft.² in size.   H-E-B eventually opened 35 stores and was beating Blockbuster in sales had to head in the markets in Texas like San Antonio for example. A few years later HEB sold out to Hollywood Video and Hollywood Video went public.   In 1993 Alan got into franchises of Blockbuster working with Prime Cable. The business was struggling as Prime was not a retail company. They had 8 stores in Alaska and 10 stores in El Paso, Texas. Alan instituted the H-E-B model and was able to turn the stores around.   Blockbuster Business Model - Blockbuster legitimized the video business, and made it more professional than the original mom and pop stores that were not run well. Wayne Huizenga had bought Blockbuster early on when it just had 20 stores and he grew it fast.   The formula was simple - all movies regardless of whether they were new or old or rented for three day at $3. The demand for new movies was huge. Blockbuster could've charged more renting new movies.   Alan used the H-E-B grocery video model that was developed. Rent movies by the day and charge more for new releases. Older movie you could charge a $1 a day and people could keep the movie for 3 to 5 days.   There was actually a lot of demand for older movies, and they were 15,000 movie titles of older movies in demand.     Seg 3 Wayne Huizenga is a great CEO and businessman. He was the only man to build three fortune 500 companies, Waste Management, Blockbuster, and Auto Nation. Auto Nation was run by CEO Mark Jackson, and is the premier car dealership.   Wayne admitted he was more interested in building the thing, not running things. He also went on to buy the Miami Dolphins in football in the 1990s, and start the Florida Marlins baseball franchise.   Blockbuster stores were well run, attractive, and demand was high. Their franchise colors of blue black background and yellow Blockbuster writing on the sign were easily visible. They also picked very good real estate locations for their stores.   In 1994, Wayne sold Blockbuster to Viacom for $8.4 billion. In just seven years, built valuation from 1987 to 1994 when built up the business for a return of hundreds of percent. He paid $15 million, and sold it for $8.4 billion.   Viacom rolled the business into its total corporate structure and six years later they spun it off at a $1.5 billion valuation in six years, they lost 75% of the value of the business, it was poorly run.   Viacom was a TV company with major networks like Nickelodeon run by Sumner Redstone. He wanted to get involved in the movie business and use the Blockbuster purchase eventually to get Paramont studios.   Blockbuster when purchased was cash flowing $1 billion a year, it was making lots of money.   Steve Berrard was named the CEO of Blockbuster after the Viacom purchase, and only lasted one year. Then Bill Fields was brought in as the second Viacom CEO of Blockbuster.   Fields had a Walmart background, so he was hired for his experience in retail. He had no clue though how to run the video business. He also lasted less than one year, and the cash flow was starting to go negative.     Seg 4   1997 the DVD was introduced and this would change the movie and rental business. DVDs were created to be sold direct to consumer. 1997 is also the year that Netflix started with their DVD rental business through the mail. In 1999, the video rental business peaked at $10 billion a year in revenues. Post 1999 thru 2006 sales were flat to small growth.   1997 Blockbuster got their 3rd CEO, John Antioco, who served as Blockbuster CEO from 1997 through 2007. He also had a retail background and marketing. He had been at Taco Bell briefly, and prior to that he spent 20 years at 7-Eleven.   7-Eleven is a huge retail store that's really about location and real estate. They sell gas soda beer and cigarettes. They are not known for being great in retail. One thing John did as the new blockbuster CEO which was good, he started to engage with the franchisees.   In the late 1990s you were starting to see technology in the Internet slowly affect new businesses. When Netflix was created they always intended to be an Internet company,  it just took them 10 years to get where they wanted to be.   John running Blockbuster that stable to slow growth. He doubled top line revenue and doubled the amount of stores blockbuster had but the profit margins went down. Had its height in the early 2000s blockbuster at 5500 US stores and 3 to 4000 stores outside the US.   Blockbuster at the typical business fix cost of rent labor and taxes, which were slowly increasing year after year. Gross margin is just the rental revenue minus the cost of the product.   The cost of the DVD product have been cut in half by the early 2000s. DVDs were made cheaper as the movie business was trying to sell direct to consumer, and kill the rental business if possible.   The rental business revenues started flattening out post 2005. Sell through business for DVDs from movie studios was increasing every year, and had tripled in just a few years in sales.   In theory, Blockbusters gross margin should've gone up but instead was declining. They had the Proto typical business math problem of high costs and not enough sales.   The Great Recession of 2008 was really the beginning of the end for Blockbuster. By 2010 blockbuster and filed bankruptcy. It was the end of an era of a very strong stable business at one point for video sales rental.     Seg 5 – Bonus   Netflix started in 1997, with a business model of DVD rental via the mail. Even though Netflix only had a small portion of market share, by 2004 blockbuster felt compelled to compete with Netflix on the video rental via sales but failed.   Netflix originally did not have their subscription model. That model was added a few years in, circa 2007. In 2010, Netflix started adjusting their business model and experimenting heavily with streaming. The streaming business model for Netflix really didn't take off until post 2010.   Netflix created their AI recommendation model. This taught their subscriber base how to enjoy titles. Netflix overall model was customer centric. If a customer liked comedy Netflix could recommend 10 more comedies to them.   Another thing the customers loved was Netflix would release the full season of the TV series at one time. This created the streaming binge watch phenomenon. By contrast Blockbuster had tons of customer data but never did anything with that data. In theory Blockbuster could've been Netflix, and at one point almost bought Netflix.   Netflix original niche was renting older movies with the recommendation model. Netflix also created the queue system. Netflix sent titles in a customer's queue of 20 movies and would control what movies the customer would get sent in the mail.   In 1998, Blockbuster had to start a revenue sharing of profits with movie studios and this really hurt gross margin in the video rental business. Unit volume sales were not stable as time went on. Overall top line volume sounds was inconsistent.   Blockbuster at one point tried the subscription model, but physically in stores. It failed for it did not work in an actual brick and mortar retail store. Blockbuster in the mid-2000s used gimmick solutions which never really addressed the fundamental problems that were happening.   Reed Hastings of Netflix offered to sell the company to Blockbuster in 2000 for $50 million. Netflix wanted to join forces. Reed Hastings goal from day one, was to be an Internet company. Blockbuster was not able to work out the deal, so it never materialized.   Reed Hastings of Netflix was a true founder and original. He had vision. Founders may not be the best operators all the time, but they must have vision. There are some founders though who not only have vision, but also can be an operator. Examples are Reed Hastings of Netflix, Steve Jobs of Apple, Mark Zuckerberg with Facebook.   Wayne Huizenga was a founder, but not an operator. You go from the founder mentality to the operator mentality, but this never materialized in the history of Blockbuster.   Overall, Blockbuster management never really understood the business they were in. They were in the customer business, but never really focused on the customer. This is how over the long term they were beat out by companies like Netflix, and even Amazon.   Peter Drucker (famous business consultant) would ask the important question: ‘What business are you in?' – to understand who your customers are, what they need, and how to market and sell to your customer   Postscript: Alan Payne closed his last blockbuster store in 2018, and then wrote the Built to Fail Blockbuster book. While the decline in Black American baseball players has received lots of scholarly attention in the last three decades, scholars have not spent as much time studying the decline of Black American fans at Major League Baseball (MLB) games. The few of examinations of the number of Black American fans at MLB games that exist tend not to take the structures of the fan experience at MLB games into account. In contrast, this paper examines that experience, which reveals that the persistent, but adaptable, marginalization of Black fans at MLB games—from describing them differently, to treating them differently, to segregating them, to building new ballparks far removed from Black communities, to not marketing to Black audiences, to making it difficult for Black fans to reach games—is a major contributing factor to the disproportionately low number of Black American fans at MLB games today.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is currently leading an inquiry into Jontay Porter, a dual position player for Toronto, in the face of suspicions related to gambling. Toronto Raptors coach, Darko Rajakovi?, acknowledged his awareness of the situation just before the team's match on a recent Monday night. It came to light when a representative of the league verified the commencement of the inquiry. Porter's performance during the matches held on January 26 and March 20 are the objects of interest within the investigation. It was reported that Porter made transient appearances for both games before exiting on the pretext of ailment or injury. The info was first disclosed by ESPN. Amidst the specifics, Porter's encounter with the Los Angeles Clippers consisted of a participation time of 4 minutes and 24 seconds, while during his run against Sacramento, his playing time spanned 2:43. Coach Rajakovi? showed faith in the sincerity of his players, stating he never doubts player injuries and reaffirming his belief in their honesty. In both matches under scrutiny, Porter's performance failed to match the betting predictions in relation to total points, rebounds, and three point shots made. Specifically, in the Clippers game, Porter did not achieve the betting odds of netting 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists; he ended with nil points, three rebounds, and a single assist. For the game against the Kings, the betting lines centered around accumulating 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. However, Porter ended that game also with zero points, supplemented with merely two rebounds. The distance between Porter's achievements and the prop wager lines suggests a substantial discrepancy. Porter was noticeably absent from the home game the Raptors had against the Brooklyn side on the very Monday mentioned earlier, with the reason cited as personal. Correspondingly, he was not present for the subsequent loss against Washington, once again due to personal reasons. It was also observed that prior to the Monday evening game against the Nets, Porter's locker was conspicuously vacant of any personal affects, although his name plate remained affixed. When Coach Rajakovi? was questioned about the occurrence, he confessed he had not shared the matter with the rest of the team. Rajakovi? stated that the team's reaction remained a mystery to him but added that such challenging situations are undesirable for any individual or team. As a necessity, they just have to cope with it and this revealed the understanding nature of the team toward the crisis. Twenty-four-year-old Jontay Porter, brother of Denver forward Michael Porter, holds a record of averaging 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists over 26 games, which included five starts. Over the course of the 2020-21 season, the 6-foot-10 Porter was also among the players for Memphis for a total 11 games. The NBA has rules in place to counteract such instances, requiring players to undergo one 'anti-gambling training session conducted by their Team and/or the NBA' on a yearly basis. This seems pertinent, as four G league players have faced suspensions ranging between three to five games this season, due to violations of gambling policies. During 2022, there was a pronounced wave of disqualification for six NBA 2K League players who had defied the league's regulations relating to gambling. The NBA policy is very clear: any player wagering anything of value on games or events in the NBA or the NBA G League can face a scale of sanctions from Commissioner Adam Silver. Washington forward Corey Kispert stressed on the simplicity and clarity of the rules, which were laid out before the season began. It is well-known that NBA has had commercial alliances with gaming companies over the years, and lists FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings as its official gaming partners. The NBA further practices relations with no less than 24 additional gaming operators. Nonetheless, gambling is not without its serious risks, as underscored by Cleveland Cavaliers' coach J.B. Expressing his concerns, Bickerstaff affirmed it's a fine line to tread. Such perilous incidents reveal the hidden threats behind the glamorous veil of sports betting. In the midst of this, public criticism from bettors is a common grievance among other players. Raptors forward Jordan Nwora remarked that he and his fellow players frequently receive feedback on how their performance influences gamblers. He added that such conversations are a part of the NBA culture. In a surprising turn of events, Major League Baseball (MLB) player Shohei Ohtani denied any involvement in sports betting nor being involved in settling any gambling-related debts of his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. His comments broke the silence about the allegations of illegal gambling and theft leveraged against him. fWotD Episode 2449: Mark Baldwin (baseball) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Thursday, 18 January 2024 is Mark Baldwin (baseball).Marcus Elmore Baldwin (October 29, 1863 – November 10, 1929), nicknamed "Fido" and "Baldy", was an American right-handed professional baseball pitcher who played seven seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB). In 346 career games, he pitched to a 154–165 win–loss record with 295 complete games. Baldwin set the single-season MLB wild pitches record with 83 that still stands today.Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Baldwin made his professional debut for a Cumberland, Maryland team in 1883. Though signed by Chicago White Stockings president Albert Spalding to pitch against the St. Louis Browns in the 1886 World Series, Baldwin did not play after Browns objected. He made his MLB debut for the White Stockings in 1887, when a writer for the Oshkosh Daily Northwestern called him the "swiftest pitcher in the National League" (NL). Released by Chicago player–manager Cap Anson, he signed with the Columbus Solons of the American Association (AA) in 1889, where he led the league in innings pitched (513+2⁄3), losses (34), strikeouts (368), and walks (274).In 1889, Baldwin, described as "intelligent and outspoken," recruited players for the Chicago Pirates of the Players' League (PL). Baldwin played for Chicago and finished the year as the PL leader in games played as a pitcher (58), innings pitched (492), wins (33), strikeouts (206), complete games (53), and walks (249), as the Pirates finished fourth in the league, ten games behind the first-place Boston Reds. A PL historian has described him as a star of the league. Back in the NL, he signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he played from 1891 to 1893. Baldwin was arrested after the Homestead strike in 1892 and charged with aggravated riot, but never received a trial. He finished his MLB career with the New York Giants in 1893, and played several seasons for independent teams afterwards.During his career, he batted and threw right-handed, weighed 190 pounds (86 kg), and stood 6 feet (180 cm) tall. After baseball, Baldwin became a physician and practiced at Passavant Hospital in Pittsburgh. Leon Cadore of Brooklyn and Joe Oeschger of Boston each pitched 26 innings, and jointly hold the record for the longest pitching appearance in MLB history.The day of the game saw rainy weather, and it was unclear if the game would be played, but the skies cleared enough to allow it to proceed. Brooklyn scored a run in the fifth inning, and Boston in the sixth; thereafter the pitchers became increasingly dominant. As the game lengthened past eighteen innings, the small crowd at Braves Field cheered both pitchers. The last twenty innings were scoreless, and with darkness starting to fall, the umpires called a halt after the twenty-sixth inning, as baseball fields did not yet have artificial lighting.There have been claims that the lengthy pitching appearance ruined the arms of Oeschger and Cadore; this was not the case as both pitched several more years in the major leagues and Oeschger won twenty games in 1921. The performance meant that they remained better known than other former major leaguers of that era. Although 25-inning games were played in the major leagues in 1974 and 1984, each team involved used several pitchers, and the records for endurance posted by Oeschger and Cadore were not threatened. It is estimated that more than 5,000 fans have been injured, some seriously, by foul balls in Major League Baseball (MLB) and minor league baseball stadiums since 2012. While significant improvements have been made at the Major League level in recent years (in terms of protective netting being installed to the end of the dugouts or down to the foul poles) fans in some minor league and college baseball parks are still unprotected, except directly behind home plate. Our guests for this podcast are Jordan Skopp, founder of FoulBallSafety.com and Greg Wilkowski, a Chicago based attorney. Wilkowski has filed a class action lawsuit against the Peoria Chiefs, a minor league affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals in Peoria, Illinois. Chiefs management has refused to put up protective netting at their field beyond the netting directly beyond home plate. The result has been numerous fan injuries. We discuss the historical problem of foul balls injuring fans, the "Baseball Rule" that teams have used to avoid liability, the specific case in Peoria, why some teams are still hesitant to put up protective netting, and the fact the vast majority of players are for more protective netting in stadiums.

On this day in legal history, August 16, 1918, Lothar Witzke was convicted of espionage in the United States on behalf of Germany and became the first German spy convicted during World War I. Lothar Witzke was a junior officer in the German Imperial Navy during World War I, who became a spy and saboteur in the United States and Mexico. After escaping internment in Chile, he reached San Francisco in 1916 and began sabotage activities with another agent, Kurt Jahnke. They were involved in various missions, including suspected connections to significant explosions, though later investigations ruled out their involvement in some cases. Witzke was arrested in 1918 near the Mexican border, convicted, and sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment by President Woodrow Wilson. After an act of heroism in prison and diplomatic pressure from Germany, he was pardoned and released by President Calvin Coolidge in 1923. Upon his return to Germany, Witzke was decorated with the Iron Cross and later served in the Abwehr, or German military intelligence, during World War II. After the war, he became a member of the Hamburg Parliament, representing the German Party from 1949 to 1952.Donald Trump may have a 40 point lead ahead of DeSantis in the GOP primary, and Chris Christie may have overtaken the Florida governor in early New Hampshire polling, but among one demographic DeSantis seems to have the edge over all other Republican candidates–lawyers. According to a report by Bloomberg Law, Ron DeSantis has a significant advantage over Donald Trump in campaign donations from lawyers, leading with a 6-to-1 ratio.
