Leah Abramson is a Vancouver-based musician who immersed herself in the world of Northern Resident Orca whales to write her recent album, and masters' thesis, Songs for a Lost Pod. We speak with Leah about the musical inspiration in obscure research projects, about the lessons of forgiveness in unexpected places, and about the ways a family history of trauma can connect us to the animals with whom we share the seas. Spoken word included in the episode is by Barbara Adler.
Interview with Leah Abramson about her new album Songs For A Lost Pod.
This week, we feature the live sounds of Swedish Canadian songstress Sarah MacDougall, in concert at Victoria’s Wood Hall during Breakout West. Four albums into her career, Sarah has found success both in Sweden, and right here in Canada. Just days after performing her Music West featured set, the Whitehorse-based musician took home the 2015 Western Canadian Music Award for Roots Solo Album of the Year. The songs on that award-winning record, Grand Canyon, take inspiration from Sarah’s time working at a home for at risk youth. The record features collaborations with Rose Cousins, Jesse Zubot, and Leah Abramson of The Abramson Singers. This intimate set was recorded at midnight on the first night of Breakout West 2015, and includes songs from Grand Canyon, and Sarah’s 2011 album The Greatest Ones Alive.
This Banff Centre podcast features an interview with Leah Abramson of The Abramson Singers followed by their sonically rich concert in the Margaret Greenham Theatre as part of The Banff Centre's 2011 Indie Band Experience.
There are very few humans who don't enjoy music. For most people, it offers relaxation, inspiration, enjoyment and in times of trouble, solace. Leah Abramson is an activist and documentary maker who works with women in prison, fostering their musical expression. In the documentary we're about to play for you, she takes us behind the prison walls to hear some of the music created by the women there. The Human books project aims to increase understanding between people. It's held at local libraries, where people volunteer to act as books. When you're a book, library-goers can sign you out for 30 minutes. In that time, you tell them about your life, and they can ask any question they want. rabble.ca's Noreen Mae Ritsema volunteered to head down to the Winnipeg library and talk to some of the people participating in the human books project. Here is one of her conversations. Today: Being a disability activist. You know, it seems that no matter where you go, independent bookstores are struggling. The forces working against them also seem familiar — mega bookstores, online buying, yadda yadda… but in Montreal, a local bookshop has survived the more familiar challenges, and is instead, its looking at a shut-down because it is being overtaken by a sports bar owned by a local developer. rabble.ca's Adam Bemma headed down to the shop to discuss the encroachment of new real estate, zoning laws, and urban planning on neighborhoods in general, and Terry Westcott's bookshop in particular. Here's their interview.
