As another Brendan Fraser History Month comes to a close we dedicate this year's finale to an episode long discussion about the Harold Ramis directed “Bedazzled” celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Of course before we can get to that we have to spend the requisite 16 minutes discussing the current series finale episode of “Suits: LA” Freedom and bring a close to our experiment in a weekly recap of a television show. Make sure you stick around after the episode ends for a special surprise from your friends at The Say Report in the spirit of the season!
Enjoy your weekend! (Bill Belichick's should be interesting).

How does an artist once perceived to be ahead of his time fall behind the times? The choreographer/director of Golden Age classics like Singin' the Rain and Funny Face left Hollywood for all the 60s and the first half of the 70s, perfecting a certain brand of sophisticated comedy/romance abroad with films like Charade, Bedazzled and Two for the Road. His rough Hollywood re-entry was marked by exercises in nostalgia for eras gone by (Lucky Lady, a movie about Prohibition Era gangsters starring Burt Reynolds and Liza Minnelli; the 1930s spoof Movie Movie) and attempts to give audiences of the 80s what it was assumed they wanted (the sci-fi debacle Saturn 3, the sex comedy Blame it on Rio). Right here, squaring off, from opposite sides of the Atlantic, we present: Dueling tag-teams of zaniness — wearing fanciful disguises, winking at traditional forms, and tweeting in a birdlike falsetto… Good stuff!BEDAZZLEDThe Faustian satire Bedazzled, created by genius comedian Peter Cook (who plays the Devil trying to bargain for souls), makes good use of the talents of his Chaplin-esque comedy partner, Dudley Moore (who you might remember from the hit films Ten and Arthur), who plays the shlumpy Wimpy Burger cook, Stanley, willing to bargain away his mortal soul for love. The team first worked together in the early 60s smash stage revue BEYOND THE FRINGE, then coalesced on the BBC as Pete and Dud, (and, later, even more darlingly in the scatalogical bootleg recordings of Derek and Clive). In 1966, with Bedazzled they were on the rise commercially, and Moore, an Oxford trained classical and jazz pianist, wrote all the music for the film. In this cut, entitled Leaping Nuns chorus, the sisters of the Order of Saint Beryl (including Stanley in full habit) show their devotion to the Saint by jumping on trampolines. JAN AND DEAN MEET BATMANAlso in ‘66, laboring secretly on a similar track, energized by the same Goon Show type inspiration, Jan Berry and Dean Torrance were working to expand, (but not abandon) their surf sound by adding a storyline and special effects, and creating some nutty theater of the mind. Who knows where this might have led, if Jan's tragic car collision a few week's after the record's release, (resulting in his massive head injuries), hadn't sidelined the team's ambitions? Perhaps a blockbuster TV series…?There was always a comic element to the Jan and Dean performance style. (Check out the classic Rock concert film Tami Show, which they hosted). They may have looked like copper toned surf hunks, but maybe there was some Abbott and Costello lurking beneath the Golden Boy surface.
A darkly comic satire about an increasingly deranged leader of a Western power, tensions with Russia and the threat of World War 3 breaking out – sound familiar? That's the premise of Whoops Apocalypse, the 1986 feature film very loosely based on the sitcom of the same name, created by David Renwick and Andrew Marshall. Sadly where the film fails to imitate real life is the presence of a female President in the White House and she's the (relatively) sane one, while her British counterpart (played by Peter Cook) believes unemployment is caused by pixies and is quite happy to encourage those without jobs to leap to their deaths off Beachy Head. The film also features Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H), Richard Wilson, Michael Richards (pre-Seinfeld), Rik Mayall, Alexei Sayle, Ian Richardson, Herbert Lom and John Sessions. Last December for Goon Pod Film Club Tyler spoke to Renwick & Marshall at length about Whoops Apocalypse and how it all came about and he decided to share it with the general Goon Pod listeners as a bonus episode before world events rendered its plot totally tame and entirely plausible. Andrew and David talked warmly about the film and revealed how it was chiefly the lousy scheduling of their earlier television show End Of Part One which compelled them to write the Whoops Apocalypse sitcom, which in turn led to producer Brian Eastman proposing a big-screen repurposing, involving a new storyline and characters. They discussed the writing process, the challenges of casting, the difference between what made critics laugh and audiences laugh and things they wish had worked a little bit better. Goon Pod returns in late March. Goon Pod Film Club can be found here: patreon.com/GoonPod and you can sign up free for a seven day trial. Shows include Kind Hearts & Coronets, A Hard Days Night, Bedazzled (1967), Monty Python & The Holy Grail, Guest House Paradiso (aka the ‘Bottom movie'),Carry On Screaming, Billy Liar and, most recently, It's Trad Dad.
Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we're celebrating “Dreddruary,” where we cover movies based on the British comic book character, Judge Dredd! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Sylvester Stallone's misguided 1995 schlockfest, Judge Dredd!Recycled food! Bedazzled codpieces! Distracting lifts! A cool, creepy cyborg! A shockingly sneaky, giant robot! Lethal holograms! Futuristic court drama! Stylish garbs of justice designed by Gianni Versace! A strong score by Predator's Alan Silvestri and cinematography by Aliens' Adrian Biddle! An original song from The Cure! A surprisingly faithful comic adaptation in every way except for the lead character! A visual treat with incredible production design, animatronics, and visual effects, including one of the greatest fictional mega cities in cinema! A solid cast that includes James Remar (briefly), Armand Assante, Max von Sydow, Diane Lane, Rob Schneider unfortunately, and Sylvester Stallone's ego derailing the movie! Dark themes of police corruption and eugenics in this silly movie that maybe works better as a disappointing sequel to Demolition Man, from a frustrated director who loved both the source material and apparently Blade Runner! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Captain America: Brave New World, Oz Perkins' new horror comedy, The Monkey, and the final nail in the Sonyverse coffin, Kraven the Hunter! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. Our exit today has us wanting to live deliciously and commune with the devil. This week we are talking about two films that depict the Prince of Darkness, Lucifer, albeit in different forms. First, we will talk about Bedazzled, a remake of the Dudley Moore comedy and directed by Harold Ramis. Next, we will talk about Little Nicky, starring Adam Sandler. While one is a modern Faust update, the other is looking at the spawn of Satan trying to save the world and his father. Along the way, we talk about previous versions of the Faust legend, SNL sketches, British New Wave, the Golden Gate Bridge, Hugh Grant's scandals, celebrity cameos, Nosferatu, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and of course, Harvey Keitel. Elizabeth Hurley stars in the new film, Strictly Confidential, which was written and directed by her son, Damian! She talks about acting in the movie and serving as producer, and how she managed to keep the professional relationship separate from just being “mum.” She also has tons of stories about working with Mike Myers on the Austin Powers movies, doing Bedazzled with the late, great Harold Ramis, and rebooting her acting career on TV's Gossip Girl. She also talks Hugh Grant and that infamous black Versace dress held together with over-sized gold safety pins that she wore to the premiere of Four Weddings & A Funeral. Nerves are on edge as Jo and Titan witness Jasoo delivered from yet another mountain lake by yet another draconic spirit. The dragon teaches them much, and they return to Evertree having gotten what they came for. There's a new face that greets them on the way, however, and many more faces to meet before reaching the Prophet. Titan is, as always, persuasive, Jo puts her necklace to work, and Jasoo puts her healing to the test. But after treating the Prophet, all is not well. What's that hammer doing, and what happened to the Doomstone? Everyone knows the story of Aladdin. Everyone's familiar with the concept of Genie's and their wish-granting powers and they've considered what they would do if they had a genie. Today we're going to talk about our top 5 genie wishes. That's right, we're gonna shed off the classic 3 wish limitation and go with 5 wishes because this is after all the Top 5 Podcast. We're each gonna pick 5 wishes and standard rules apply: you can't wish for someone's death, you can't make someone fall in love, and you can't wish to bring Harambe back from death. Oh and also you can't ask for more wishes, you're already getting five. We'll likely have some crossover but today for the sake of conversation we're doing the old Jackass Genie Trope. Think of the rules of Bedazzled. You remember that movie, right? Brendan Fraser makes all these deals with the Devil played by Elizabeth Hurley who gives him what he wants, but there's always a huge catch that he didn't consider which serves as the ultimate reminder “be careful what you wish for—you just might get it!” In other words one person's going to say their wish and the other two are going to shit all over it. We didn't share our lists with each other and by no means are we experts in this or any other category. We are just a few dudes who like to discuss nonsense. The Top 5 Podcast is hosted by Zach Rancourt, Eric Schoen, and Thomas Lockhart. It is available on Apple, Google, Pandora, Spotify, Amazon, TuneIn, and Podbean. We appreciate your fandom! Faith cannot last without wonder. While our spiritual lives must be intellectually and emotionally satisfying, the Gospels remind us that Christ's love and glory are more than we can exhaustively describe or understand. Wonder leads to love, love leads to life.
Grab your AirPods and cross The River Styx with The Girls! This week Barbara is presenting a listener's recommendation of “Neon Gods” by Katee Roberts. When Zeus announces he is engaged to Persephone (news to her!) she runs away to Hades in the Underworld. This book is set in a modern day Olympus, which is basically Gotham City… so does that make Hades The Penguin? This episode is carrying on the girls' 2024 trend of being all over the place. The First Coming is so good it causes actual fireworks! We also get an insight into Emily's imagination and it is…stimulating. Is our 13th episode lucky or are we cursed? Do any of our husband's know how to quietly make biscuits? Have you seen Bedazzled? Try to make it through the whole episode without using the safe word “pomegranate!” New Episodes out every Tuesday!
