This is the third book following Firekeeper's Daughter, but it actually takes place temporally between the events of Firekeeper and Warrior Girl. I actually liked Warrior Girl, Unearthed more than Firekeeper's Daughter overall, but I was really left frustrated by the many holes in the ending. In today's episode we descend beneath the tides to explore the world of mermaids — their folklore, symbolism and the magic that surrounds them. This episode also ties into my current Sea Witch work and upcoming Litha zine The Book of Tides, where we explore mermaids, selkies, water magic, sea folklore and the many sacred forms of magical water used within witchcraft and folk practice. On this episode we are stepping into the strange, earthy and folkloric energy of May Witchcraft. We begin with Lily of the Valley after my mum recently gifted one to me for my garden and naturally, I ended up completely falling down the rabbit hole of its folklore and magical associations. Together we explore the flowers connections to faery folklore, protection, divination, springtime traditions, connected deities, old Christian symbolism, weddings, luck, death omens and the return of happiness. Despite its delicate appearance Lily of the Valley carries an incredibly liminal energy and has long been associated with the veil between worlds. From there we descend underground into the world of coal and charcoal magic. Lately I have been feeling much more earthy and grounded within my practice, perhaps because of Taurus season but also because I have been spending so much time gardening, growing herbs and reconnecting with the soil again. This led me towards wanting to explore the simple but powerful ingredients that would once have been accessible within everyday folk magic — things like salt, charcoal and coal. We look at the magical uses of coal and charcoal throughout history including protection, grounding, purification, banishing, prosperity work and spiritual cleansing alongside old folk beliefs surrounding miners, omens and underground spirits. Finally we finish with haunted mining folklore and ghost stories inspired by the folk horror novel Scratch Moss by David Barnett. Expect tales of Knockers, phantom miners, eerie omens, ghostly hands carrying candles through the tunnels, spectral black dogs, Bluecap spirits and the strange supernatural folklore that grew from the deep mines beneath the earth. For centuries, the people of the British Isles marked the beginning of summer not on the solstice, in June, but on May 1st. It’s a cross-quarter day, which comes about half way between a solstice and an equinox. In Scotland and Ireland, the date was known as Beltane. People built bonfires to celebrate the longer days, and held rituals to protect their crops and livestock. And in England, the date became known as May Day. People celebrated with village fetes, and they danced around the maypole. Dancers grabbed ribbons attached to the top of the pole, then circled around it, getting closer with each circuit. Especially tall maypoles were erected in an area of London known as the Strand. The last of these poles was removed 300 years ago. But it found a new life – supporting one of the world’s largest telescopes. The maypole was acquired by Isaac Newton, who had formulated laws of gravity and motion. In April of 1718, he had the pole moved to a park outside London for use by James Pound, an astronomer and clergyman. Pound had the use of a large lens created by another astronomer. The telescope was created by mounting the lens on the maypole. The eyepiece was on the ground, linked to the lens by a long wire. With that telescope, Pound measured the positions of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn. Newton used those observations to calculate the moons’ orbits – measuring a celestial dance around the maypole. Let's look at May Day and Beltane traditions across Britain and Ireland, from ancient fires to seasonal folk customs.

It's gonna be May! Okay, okay, we shall cease and desist with the boy band GIFs and on to the show! All over Europe and other areas we celebrate May Day, Beltane, Walpurgis night, whatever you call it it's all about fire, coming together, and making babies! Or new life, shall we say, new beginnings. First spring has sprung. So we dive into some celebrations and traditions from Bavaria, Germany, Scandinavia, which mostly call it Walpurgis night or some variation, and celebrate a Saint, a She-saint in fact! Hello Witches In this episode we look at Witch's Salt, one of the most ancient, powerful and accessible tools in magickal practice. We explore the many forms salt can take, from sea salt and Himalayan pink salt to black salt, kosher salt and beyond. A viral AI video posted by Donald Trump depicts the president being baptized in blood while uttering what appears to be a magical incantation - "Ashaka shan la.” Perhaps the video was shared on TruthSocial and then removed like the controversy over a white robed Trump as the Tarot Magician. If he did not post the video, then it still serves the purpose of undermining the truth of what it implies. In some African languages and Sanskrit the phrase translates to “drinking the bitterness” or “drinking hope.” If you reverse the text, it reads "Al nahs akasha,” meaning "misfortune," "bad luck," or a "sinister influence." In traditional Arabic astrology, Saturn is known as al-nahs al-akbar (the greater misfortune). The phrase literally translates as "Akasha brings bad luck." The video was reportedly posted, or faked, on April 18-19 weekend, the unofficial start of Beltane, and coincides with both UFO Disclosure narratives being pushed with the Book of Enoch to undermine the New Testament, and the supposed Federal approval of of psychedelic ibogaine compounds. In the case of Enoch, which is largely metaphoric, it is being used alongside of the America Reads the Bible event put on by Israel — the goal is to justify holy war with the Old Testament while desecrating the New Testament. In the case of ibogaine, it is manufactured by PsyRx, an Israeli company that with others companies from that country have produced the LGBTQ and Opioid crisis.
